    "Pastime Paradise" was sampled by Coolio in 1995 to make "Gangsta's Paradise", which was then parodied in 1996 by Weird Al Yankovic with "Amish Paradise". But it all started with Stevie.

      like with any music i gotta respect the original creator, but in my opinion coolio's sample surpasses this original. the beat is just so well utilized and the song has such good,smart and not to mention meaningful lyrics, along with a good message.

      I’ll be damned. Coolio was my jam in 1995. I must’ve listened to that song with my friends a thousand times. Lord knows it was being played on MTV constantly during that time. I had no idea Coolio sampled the melody from this Stevie Wonder song. I imagine that happens a lot. In fact when I was a boy I loved Ice Ice Baby, from Vanilla Ice and it wasn’t until many years later I heard the song Under Pressure from David Bowie and Freddie Mercury.
      Coolio passed away very recently so I have a renewed interest in Gangsta’s Paradise and I’m fascinated that a rap artist would sample the melody of a song performed by Stevie Wonder. It seems like a random choice.
      So are musicians ok with this? You compose and sing a song, and 20 years later someone else steals your melody or tune or whatever, but changes the lyrics and makes subtle changes to the underlying melody, and sells a million records and launches a career in music. Did Stevie get paid royalties at least?

    • @SampleGamez
      @SampleGamez 2 года назад +29

      Coolio asked permission before releasing his reworked version of Pastime Paradise, it got turned down the first time because of profanity, but after coolio removed the profanity, Stevie Wonder approved it.
      also, Stevie liked the reworked version lmao, he even sang it with Coolio once in 1995, making a sort of mix between the two songs, its pretty cool, you should check it out.

      it wasnt Coolio who came up with Gangsta's paradise...it was actually L.V (guy who sings the chorus) together with a producer who was playing around with this tune. L.V then took another rapper first who decided L.V should create the song by himself, after which he then took it to coolio (who took some convincing apparently) and then after hearing the beat L.V brought of gangstas paradise, Coolio started writing his lyrics....Shame L.V doesnt get the love he deservs for being the one who actually brought gangstas paradise together.

      Awesomw talent, Stevie Wonder is! I love the orchestration and the string instruments are simply - beautiful, I also enjoy the rap
      version, adapted by Coolio; may he rest in peace. this song, is
      prophetic, in many ways and Coolio's version, is a befitting, the
      Gangsters, in the 21st Centuring, in the USA & Globally.

    This song is more prolific and pedictive than most know. Actually his whole discography is..but THIS song speaks like a parable. The before and after of our world. When younger and listening to his music, i knew he was saying something deeper than what the lyrics meant. Now, as knowledge increases and the veil being lifted w/an almost sultry subtlety. I know that what i struggled to grasp in Wonder's lyrics then, now I seem to understand on many diff levels. Is that age? Or time?

      WithDreday I'm sorry; I've heard so many people ranting like that with seemingly no support. I was probably not in the best mood either, so thanks for being the better person and not getting all sarcastic XD
      I totally agree with that, though, to be honest. It seems like everybody wants money and nothing more, so they appeal to statistics, pretty much. It's no longer an art at that point; art is "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination" according to the Oxford dictionary. Where is the creativity in taking the paved road and directly copying the predecessors?
      So, yeah, you're right. Sorry.

    • @WithDreday
      @WithDreday 10 лет назад +6

      KupferudelWolf No need to apologize. People do that with genres they don't like all the time, so I get how it can become cliché after awhile.

    I've been calling him the GOAT and well deserved, for a long time now. No one touches his run from 1967-1985...18 years of just EXCELLENCE with a middle run inside of it of the greatest trio of albums ever made back to back to back (Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Songs in the Key of Life). And that's AFTER the otherwise classic Talking Book in 1972. All that and he hadn't even turned 30 yet. THE GOAT.
