As a cocker spaniel owner, the only good reason I can think of not to have one is they are prone to ear infections. Other than that, my dog is the absolute sweetest dog ever. We love him to death.

I just lost my cocker spaniel yesterday. My heart is absolutely broken. Life feels so empty without him and the pain is unbearable. I'm a grown man and cried when I saw his lambchops toy today.
I've had cockers my entire life. One had bad ear infections. One needed a invisible fence because he would see a rabbit or squirrel and take off. He was also extremely nervous around other dogs and had seizures. He would snap at people if stressed too much. I also shaved him to avoid the shedding. I think the "cocker cut" is hideous.
Out of the six cockers I've had, only one barked at people at the door. We've had many breeds in our family, and cockers too me have always been the most lovable. Every single one loved laying on me. There's a reason why they're called "wiggle butts".
I'll always miss you Chieftain Harold... You were my little man. You were my loyal best friend. I hope someday you will understand why I had to put you to sleep and how devestated I was. I'd give anything to pet you one last time. I'm looking at your empty bed right now and it hurts so bad.

My golden cocker spaniel had a very beautiful nature. He passed away on 2020/07/01 at the age of 17 and a half years old. He loved water and walking in muddy patches on our walks... loved to swim in the sea. I'd recommend these dogs to anyone. He always came when you called him and he loved playing. He did go deaf (not completely) and blind from about 14 years onwards....but as his hearing and sight deteriorated, he was accustomed to his surroundings and adapted nicely. Due to lock down I got to spend that extra time with him.

After walkies and playtime, she rests till lunchtime and so on throughout the day. If I am late with any aspect of daily routine, she comes and gives me a gentle woof to remind me. So charming and intelligent.

I have had dogs all of my life until about a year ago when my last beloved terrier passed away aged 21. I didn’t look for a new dog because of the lock down and the horrific puppy boom situation. Besides, I have never bought a dog before, they tend to find me. I received a call today to ask if I would be interested in rehoming a 2 year old cocker. It’s not a breed that I had ever considered so I was stoked to see that you have videos on this breed, thank you! I’m going to take the pup on a trial walk this week. Wish me luck!

@@TargetrecoverytransportUk I adopted him 😊. I was told he was a pure cocker but he is about the size of a lab so I’m not so sure. He is the perfect addition to our family, it’s as if he’s always been here. He came with some minor behavioural issues but they have mostly self-corrected with a decent exercise routine. All of my previous dogs have been very independent (terriers and lurchers) so I’m having a lot of fun training a dog who is actually a willing participant! Are you considering one?

I am a quiet, introverted, somewhat disabled person with a 1 year old cocker. I find most of these things aren't true at least in my case. He only goes to the groomer maybe 6 times a year otherwise a brush now and then or a paw rinse in the tub if he got muddy he does fine. If you want to keep that classic cocker hairstyle all the time then yes you'll go to the groomer more often. He is very active but for me I like that about him but if he gets to be to much i give him a interactive food toy like a kong to keep him busy. Now he DOES bark at everything and sometimes he begs for my food but he is easily motivated by treats to learn. Overall I love my active dog and his zest for life he helps me stay active too!

We have our beautiful ‘Beau’ boy dog since he was 8 weeks old..we always wanted a working cocker as we used to walk an older spaniel for a friend..my goodness we didn’t know what we were letting ourselves in for..our puppy consumes much of our day…we have to get up at 5 or 6am EVERY morning for his wee wee’s (he is now 4 months old)…we have trained him to sit and wait for his food successfully…tried retrieval training which went brilliantly to begin with..but now as he has become more intelligent he will run with the retrieve and hide behind the sofa with it and chew! We’ve had to take away most of his toys as he chews them. Have only taken him in the garden for 1st 4 months as we know smells will distract him..he is on the GO all day and sometimes we can’t do things like we used to…putting washing in the machine..he will steal a sock…making food he is under our feet all the time..walking to heel on the slip lead is still abit of a nightmare..he pulls a lot..but we are progressing. We aim to get him trained enough for beating or field trials..it’s a work in progress. Beau is a lovely puppy..so excited to see us each morning you can’t help but love him..BUT…spaniels are VERY hard work..we understand they are working dogs. So yes if you want a quiet life DONT pick a spaniel. BUT We wouldn’t change him for the world .

I put the * asterisk because to me they aren’t a problem to me, I love the fact that they are high energy dogs as they have got me to spend so much time outdoors and I am proud of how healthy and happy they both are. People often comment on their coats, particularly my 4 year old as she is jet black and it really shines. I have a cocker spaniel and I love him. I take him to a groomer 50 dollars every time but she does a wonderful job I have him shaved all over with cocker ears cut. My Cooper loves to wear hoodies when its cold. He chases rabbits and he enjoys it. He hasnt caught one he chases birds as well. He loves to look out the window. Make sure you shave the hair out of those ears and keep those ears clean with ear cleaner they are prone to ear infections. We have a k-9 cannon and i shoot the ball in the air he runs and jumps for them he sleeps in bed with me every night if he cant see me he will run to find me in the house. My cocker is between 20 to 25 pounds. They are thieves my sister had a subway 6 in sandwhich she walked away she was only gone 30 seconds he devoured it she turned around she saw him jump off the chair. I am cocker spaniel owner, he barely barks, and i love him too much, he is basically the perfect pet and friend, when I adopted him I never imagined how wonderful "CHANO" was going to be; I have a couple of years with my girlfriend and she infinitely loves him, but the only thing I noticed is that she doesn´t like is his odor, so, the only reason you should not get a cocker is if you can´t support hard odors, otherwise is the best firend you may find, I had chihuahuas, french poodles, beagles, and mixed breeds, and those are great dogs, but I believe my cocker is the best dog ever, if you have any chance to get an english cocker, do not hesistate, you will fall in love.

We rescued a cocker spaniel. Perfect at first . Then 8months in suddenly started biting people . So far the bite count is four and various near misses . We have had a trainer in and they said she is guarding me . On Saturday a man insisted on trying to let her and she was sat with me outside a supermarket. She suddenly lunged at him and nearly got him . She now has to wear a muzzle in public. Mainly for her protection to avoid any mishaps. She has more lives than a Cheshire Cat . We love her more than life it’s self but I would say guarding is a big problem

We bought our ( working-Cocker Spaniel )as a Cockerpoo he didn't even look very much like a poodle a DNA test confirmed he was a pure breed working Cocker 3 generations both parents , my Background bipolar ex Hairdresser aged 60 haven't owned a dog since 1990 had cats , now own 2 cats aged 9 & 6 female . so I began training our Cocker Spaniel Barry the next day after picking him up , socialised him as soon as we possibly could after injections , he's never barked out of the house in the house the postman gets the bark of course but one word which is whisper , that takes care of the barking well its a whisper bark , he's walked 5 am for half an hour then again 9.30am to midday , he's left in the house 2 hrs in a morning and 3 hrs in the afternoon , short walk or garden end of the day . he loves other dogs & people & our cats also neighbours cats , we can walk past ducks he doesn't bother with them , squirrels doesn't bother them . food we eat , he never watches or begs , recall and tricks amazing , pulling on a lead magical word calm down does the trick , off the lead as soon as possible joggers or walker's running past he'll let me know first so he can respond to Come & wait over to one side while the person or persons have gone past us , training is ongoing if he starts to slip then back to basics , grooming he hates , nail cutting hates but has to be done , loves swimming in the local canal which he isn't allowed to at the moment as it's too cold , We both play fight with him , no bities command if he gets too rough , I have to watch other dogs don't get too rough with him as he's a bit of a softy , he's 17 months old , energy levels are more random bursts then again you have to stay calm because the energy level can go through the roof if you try to calm them down in a shout it's mixed messages , in case you wondered about the cats , kept them apart for about 8 months gradually started to mix things up , now leave child gates & doors open so they can be together if they want , sometimes they all sit or lay together the cats rub up against him no problems thank goodness can be obsessive with ball or toys so sometimes take ball on walk sometimes not , they do follow you around everywhere then again so do the cats , training is the key , never stop training them .

My list of "should do" with a cocker :
    - learn to clean and inspect ears
    - measure weigth of food and dog to find exact amount of food to keep dog shape. Ajust for seasons and activity profile. My dog eats 38gr morning and supper. 10% is 4gr, not a lot but a dog gaining 10% of weigth is a lot. Our balance is precise at 1gr.
    - use positive feedback and learn to change the thought (focus) of your dog to avoid bad behavior without frustrating your dog. Do it while the dog is young is better.
    - never to scream loudly at your dog because it has done something wrong. Most dogs forgot what they have done after few seconds and even if they recall, they might not associate your angryness with their action.

@@KC-zg7th Sorry, I just see your answer. Dogs with long ears are used to have problems with their ears. My wife which is a medical doctor and nurse is doing the cleaning. A shower per week seams a lot. We are doing it once a month but we are using a veterinary shampoo and conditionner.
However, we check ears twice a week and clean them each week. We are using fragrance free, alcool free, humid wipes and Aveeno Sativa. My wife is using her small finger. I recommend to ask to a veterinary for a how-to. We also trim the inside of the "flap" for air circulation.
By the way, never never let your dog having his head out of the window when driving a car. Dirts can scratch their eyes and go in their ears.
If bad odors is coming from ears, it may be yeast. If from mouth, it may be related to food or a dental problem.
If from body, have the dog trim.
Too frequent shampoo or bad quality one may irritate the skin.
Sorry for my english, I do not write that often.

So, I'm a perspective pet parent looking to do my research on the American Cocker as I was drawn to them by their temperament. I want to be a good, knowledgeable pet parent as i was raised in a home with dogs that had no training at all- loved them but true terrors. When mentioning about their strong need to hunt which makes sense because they were bred to hunt the woodcock, a low flying bird, would training classes help sustain that need along with play time? I'm also course how I can properly discipline barking, I don't mind it but I'd like knowledge so my future baby knows there is a limit. GREAT video, you've gained a subscriber!

My golden cocker spaniel was always inquisitive and had a really beautiful nature. He loved playing and smelling everything. He loved smelling the flowers and his favourite is a lemon smelling little tree that I have and he would rub himself on the leaves. He never dug holes or broke anything or chased anything except while playing with the other dog as they would take it in turns to chase each other. My retired neighbour would tell me that he would look over the wall to watch them play when I was at work. He loved people, but would only accept a stranger on our property if we said it was ok. He loved walking on the beach or in the forest and meeting other dogs. Everyone loved him and he was so cute. He loved hugs and belly rubs. He lived until 17 and a half years old. I miss him so much.

As a working english cocker spaniel puppy owner I disagree! I work and have a small child. Perfect choice for a family dog, companion dog as well as busy family life etc. So easy to train! House train, walk nice on lead, and heels. It just takes a little simple training which everyone who's a responsible dog owner would do anyway. They want to please, and listen so well. Amazing with redirection etc. The energy levels are what makes them so fun! Daily long walk,, play time with toys, zoomies in the garden. Relaxed in the house! Loves to sleep and incredibly cuddly. Lapdog! Won't bother us when eating, listens the first time. Wants to please! I'm so proud to own a cocker spaniel, they have become my favourite breed. My girl is a dream and she's my little boys best friend! They are also so loving, friendly and sweet. I can't explain their is something about them, they are special 🥰 also only barks when playing, like to get someone's attention when they have stopped for a second, she does however make the SWEETEST humming like noises when playing, I think it's her way of talking so I guess they are very talkative 😂

She does bark but luckily not anymore than our two Chihuahua mix dogs but she is way louder voice wise. Mazy is also a whiner. Whines to go potty, when she's bored, when she wants something etc.

Hi Will, apart from size do your comments apply to both English and American Cockers? I've loved and trained Border Collies and Golden Retrievers and am looking for a smaller breed for probably my last dog. I want to adopt an older dog to share my rural home and small acreage.

I have a cocker spaniel, and she had really crispy nose on the top, the rest of the nose is normal, is that ok for the bred? She is a rescue we have her for almost a year now, she is 7 years old

Thanks for watching! If you have any health concerns about your dog, it's also best to chat these through with your vet 😊

i saw in some other video comment , only reason you should not get a cocker spaniel is that your heart is going to be broken when they pass away.
