I've just got a cocker ,we are not the most energetic family's,he's fun most of the day then cuddles up on sofa all night , he's 5 months now ,wouldn't change him for anything .
I doubt he could pay much whatever you charge him 😂
@@MrMrtommie missed that one 🤣🤣🤣
I wonder how this went at 6 months old... My boy was a dream until 6 months 🤣 not quite so much now
Sorry, we have had Cockers for 30yrs and they can be lazy turds. They love the outdoors, but are just as happy laying on the couch all day sleeping. They will be happy in any environment with any person that will have them. We have had males, females, English, American, white, black, and mixed Cockers.
I'd agree. I have a 18 month WCS and some days he only gets 30 minutes off lead time and he'll happily lazy around the house,
I agree they live in the moment ..they can also get introuble running around there 9ne here got killed 8n a conifer trap that was illegally set a few feet in public trail ..and like he said the6 see something they want it and mine will swallow objects if you try get it offer
This is actually funny. My lady spins like a top most of the day, but she is NOT a morning lady. She would rather stay in bed. Come the afternoon though and she's mad.
@@Liondoggirl Shit, sorry to hear.
The one thing you need to know, is they are the best dogs ever!
I ve got my cocker spaniel Murphy 2 years ago and almost 10 miles walks everyday didnt really bother him unless we run with him or play a game including him running he never gets tired. Thankfully we moved to the countryside and here we have chickens and other dogs and he is the happiest Ive seen him.
I have an English Golden Cocker (show) he’s the calmest ,placid loving dog he gets a lot of attention because he’s so handsome he’s beautiful inside and out.Nothing like this guy is describing they are all different.
I have the very same experience with my black (show) English cocker. He is 5 now but has never been too active though we regulary go on hiking trips with him.
I love this. I’m an ultramarathon runner with a cocker and people are always so surprised he does all my training with me. We built up safely (he’s almost 5 now) but he can very happily run 50km with me on the flat, or 10-12 hours in the mountains. Sniffing and doing “side missions” the whole time! ❤
Can I Ask you how you trained your cocker to run with you and how long it took? When did you start training? I’m getting a cocker puppy in 6 weeks. I do alot of cross-country running and would like him eventually to join me! ☺️
@@lindaj6655 Hello friend! I started when he was about 6 months old, with guidance from his vet - to start with I only ever took him off leash and on soft trails so he could go at his own pace, stop and sniff, and it was easy on his feet. Up until a year old I only ever took him every second day, but now he's five he comes with me on every single run. He's a working cocker and so definitely sees running as his "job". If I stop when I'm out on a run to take a photo or walk a steep part he barks at me!!!
Their eyes, the way they look at you.. makes my heart melt:)
Same here. Ours passed away 2 months ago after 16 years of wonderful life. I miss him still.
We had five English Mastiffs.
After the last Mastiff died,we had a two year gap, then got a Cocker.
A little dog, with a huge character.
He was more like a child, than a dog.
Toddler tantrums, and teenage troubles.
Finally, old man syndrome.
He had to be pts aged 13: six years ago.
We have his ashes on the mantle.
We miss him so much.
He was a lovely blue roan.
They are the best dogs ever. They steal your heart❤
@@bonnie532 They really do
Sound advice , they are the most amazing breed of dog , look after them , they deserve it
They are amazing swimmers too.
Always dry ears and put ear ointment after swimming or bathing. Ear infections plaque these dogs.
Loved all 3 of our cockers, two buff one mostly white, so much fun. Happy to meet everyone
I have my cockers shaved with keeping the cocker ear look. Also keep the hair in their ears shaved down. I clean them everyday. If you don't take good care of those ears they can get ear infections.
I have owned 3 cockers and they are a wonderful breed and this video is spot on. They love and need exercise, very smart, loyal, friendly and love discipline so plan to train them a lot and absolutely need to keep up with the grooming/brushing that is the only negative I would say. So many people often say look at the puppies even when they are like 8 years old.
I've had a Cocker, as it was trained to be a support companion. This animal's ability to sense when something isn't right, is absolutely phenomenal -- they are almost perfectly in tune with their owners emotional status and can often pick up on anxiety attacks before you even register that you're having one. I just buried my best friend (Roxy, My Cocker) and let me tell you, I've never had a better breed of animal. The prices on buying one these days in Canada is absolutely staggering now, $800+ for one ... That's a bit steep for someone on Disability and Veteran's Affairs. But if I ever had the opportunity to, I'd have another one in a heartbeat. This dog perfectly emulated everything about me. It was energetic when I was, it was lazy when I was. It knew when to comfort me, and it knew when to give me space.
100% would own again. But it's a shame that breeders ask so much for an animal.
Try in the 5k’s. 800. For an AKC reg. Is cheap.
@@DavoBlairo I've looked at breeders all over Canada. CKC registered dogs don't usually exceed $1,200 for the breed. Even when you google the averages prices, it comes up with this.
On average, you can expect to pay between $500 to $2,500 for a Cocker Spaniel puppy. However, some breeders may charge higher prices for puppies with exceptional pedigrees or for show-quality dogs.
Our Scooter was known for doing "Scooter laps" which was simply running in big circles in our back yard. Indeed, once in Seaside, Oregon, Scooter was released from his lease simply took off across the sand like a rocket. I was afraid that he was running away . . . Nope; he was just blowing out the carbon from his engine. Yes, they love the feel of the wind in their hair. Prey dogs? Scooter loved every living thing. He saw me kill a gopher one day and wouldn't go near me the rest of the day. He loved our cats, our grand kids, everybody. He lived for only 17 years and we miss him greatly. He was a blond/brown English Cocker.
I've had 7 cockers, and fostered a couple dozen more through a group here in Texas (USA). Most of them were American Cockers, though a few were the English variety - one of whom bit my husband 5 times in 2 days. They can be unpredictable! One of ours had a VERY high prey drive and birds just drove him nutty in the yard. We have 3 now: my eldest is 9, has lost an eye to glaucoma and had surgery to replace her lens in her remaining eye; she went to the doc today and has increased pressure though she's on 4 eye meds; she also has severe allergies and we hand-make all her food. But she's a wonderful girl and we'd do anything to keep her happy and healthy. ... Our middle boy is a mix of a cocker to a chihuahua/shih tzu; he has all the cocker looks though he's quite short and has a very growly disposition. He loves us. End of line. ... Our youngest is a breeder surrender because they really screwed up and created a Double Merle boy. He's gorgeous and lucky - has most of his sight and hearing intact! He's almost pure white, with one grey ear and a smudge of grey on his behind like he sat in some paint; he's super smart, and still a young boy so he's SUPER energetic and playful. We love them all and wouldn't have them any other way.
I just adopted a Cocker Chihuahua mix! Not sure how that happened but he’s a trip. Love all his energyc
I rescued a cocker and he is mostly clean, his grooming doesn't take hours daily, if your routine is daily walks and visits to the park without getting into mud or hunting. Mine never hunted. He needs to play and run, but he also loves his chill time. The challenge at times is his high territorial behavior, but it gets better when I keep making him feel safe and secure. He can secretly taunt other dogs and he does not like to share me or anything. Took a year working on this. I love him so much!
Just found this channel. I have two English working cockers, age 4 and 5 years, lovely dogs and full
of energy. We walk them twice a day for one to two hours each walk. Great dogs and cuddly monsters when inside. We are both retired so I wanted a breed that would give me a reason to keep
walking after retirement as I use to do a job with lots of walking involved
Get a life😲
Have always had cockers and just got my newest he is 10 weeks, blue roans only in this household. Love the breed with all their quirks. My little treasure has just discovered toes and feet and I have the scratches, teeth marks and bruises to show for it. I love their coats and a previous cocker I showed and absolutely loved him in full show coat which he had all his 14 beautiful years. Can't wait for all his vaccinations to be done so he can get back socialising and start puppy school which I believe is a must for all cocker owners, if you can't recall a cocker you have big problems. I would love to ultimately to get him into agility training but that's after all his basic and intermediate training is complete. Love your channel and I'm glad I found it a few months back.
2 spaniels and very philosophical about the condition of my furniture.
Thank you. Too many people get dogs as "Emotional Support Therapy" and have no idea what dogs are about. Then they wonder why the dog bites their annoying children.
We are about to get one - hopefully- and my mum has warned me alot about the biting. My last dog was a star and wouldn’t hurt a fly. Aha i baby them to much, carrying them around the whole house 😂
Perfect breed for me. My cocker (3/4 show 1/4 wroking) is the most softest dog ive ever known. He is a dream and i wouldnt have any other dog but a cocker. he is ultta loving, gentle and loves everyone he meets, He was a dream as a puppy and i took it for granted what a good boy he is ( after looking after a friends dog and realised how easy my boy was).. My boy just wants cuddles and is the most loving placid dog ive ever known. Ive seen loads of vids about what cockers are like ie 'guarding, prey drive etc. My boy doesnt express any of these hes beautiful. Have i got lucky?
Mine was a sweetie pie too.
You are lucky, 6 month old isn't I to snuggles yet
We have a 5 month old Working Cocker called Snoopy. He is a service dog in training for my 2 children who are disabled. He’s an amazing, sweet, clever dog. He needs a 45min-1 hour walk or train and play session a day and I also take him on a quick walk on an evening. He’s fairly chilled 99% of the time, is super friendly and affectionate. He so far has a low prey drive when off lead but when he’s picked up in a scent when on lead, he will hunt that smell down until he’s pulled away (so great for scent training!). As for grooming, be careful when grooming paws as they have webbing between their toes so careful where you cut! Snoopy has a good old scrub in the bath once a week, daily light clean downs, teeth brushed every day and he’s good to go.
Best choice of dog I’ve ever made!
A great solution for a working cocker is to do at least three sessions of ball retrieve games each day and a good walk in the woods. Then he’ll settle in the evening. If this doesn’t happen he gets up to mischief!!
My cockapoo came from two KC registered pedigrees, his mum is a show Cocker Spaniel, and it's true, he loves to run and he loves to outrun other dogs, he's fast. Everyone says, "he's fast". He's the most adorable dog that I have ever lived with. So intuitive, compassionate, loving and tuned in with me.
I love everything spaniel and am so glad I found this channel. I had a cockapoo that I loved so much. Right now I’m looking for a Cavalier King Charles spaniel. I need a low energy dog. You’re right. Cockers love to run.
This video helped a lot! It confirmed that a spaniel just isn’t the right dog for our family. Thanks a lot
Love my springer, thinking about a cocker
I just adopted a Cocker mixed breed! Not sure what he will look like it he sure is great
My cocker spaniel does agility she loves it very well trained cockers can walk miles but the problem is they have no off switch you must make them stop to rest
On a shoot day a working cocker can cover over 100 miles. They are incredible dogs. Hardy and brave, loyal and dependable.
A Labrador is born half trained, a working cocker dies half trained!
Have 2
Everything in our house has a Cocker Spaniel in it, on it, or about to be..
Naturally intelligent and always curious
I have a male and a female -the female runs jumps and catches frisbees the male just sits eats and watches her.
I had a husky. She was a runner. So a cocker spaniel has nothing on my Tala. I live in the Ouachita mountains. I have had many dogs through the years. Many of them have been hounds, collies, poodles,German shepherds, Irish wolfhound, huskies, and chow chows. I currently have a wolf/husky mix, a collie mix and a Chihuahua. I was looking into a cocker spaniel for a companion for my chihuahua.
"Try a more velcro breed" ... tell that to me at 2am when my lil' dude decides he wants to be closer and climbs on top of my pillow to hug my head
I have just given a home to a black Cocker that its owner was going to have put to sleep as she had bitten her on the hand. Jess is a great dog, friendly and very lively. She is great on the lead and her recall is excellent. The one big issue is that I have a cat and Jess has gone for her three times this past week and it took all my strenght to hold her back. I am now in a desperate situation as I have had my cat a few years and she is not going anywhere, but can these two live together. At the moment, I am keeping them in separate rooms but this does not work very well in a one bedroom ground floor masonette. I just dont know what to do, I am that stressed out as I feel Jess may attack my cat.
I’m getting a wcs as my next breed , I’m used to Rottweilers and border collies so high energy dogs is not new to me
I’ve just bought a cocker spaniel nine weeks old, female
Know that we are awesome!!! ❤
My American cocker is a couch potato
Your making it too complicated. They are beautiful dogs and great pet. As long as you know all the things your taking about there great no need to go to extremes.
5 years ago we got a 5 year old cocker mix from the humane society. That dog had health issues and had a leg amputated once he settled in with us and is rather sedate, except at meal times. No prey drive and had charmed our grumpy old cat into sleeping with him. Last year we got a 2 year old cocker mix, he loves to run just to be running and has a highly developed prey drive. He has killed rabbits, squirrels and a possum in our yard. I dont dare let him off lead away from the house unless we are in a fenced dog park.
We rehomed a friends spaniel who abused him and within 2 months we walked over 150miles
Our working cocker has never gone off on side missions.. it’s trained well and extremely loyal. I agree with everything else but I think that’s down to the training
No other breed of dog even comes close , ........cocker spaniel, every time
I approve of this message!
Had 15 of them, great breed for families. but ear issues and cancer's got the best of them.
grown up around working cockers and labs.
How would you recommend dealing with a working cocker spaniel that runs off through the woods and only comes back when they are done with whatever they were chasing/flushing? Especially if these woods aren’t too far away from roads or fields with livestock?
Our cocker loves walks and fetch, but as soon as we get to any woods or a hedgerow where she can smell whatever wildlife is in there, she ignores recall and puts herself in danger!
We’ve resided to limiting walks to fetch on the open fields or on leash on longer walks through woods or where she may be able to get under fences etc.
From listening to the video, it sounds like this is normal behaviour because of the strong prey drive. See if you can email these guys or join a cocker spaniel club so that you can do spaniel adventures together.
We have had three - all show cockers. All of them have been pretty lazy, none of them have been particularly energetic, and all of them have had good recall 🤷🏼♂️
I love to go for runs with mine but she keeps stopping to sniff the grass or light poles.
My cocker "Crypto" is hella energetic, dude never stops 😭
Would be very useful before I got my lemonroan cocker spaniel...❤but, we survived somehow😂
LOL my Cocoa is a pedigree something... and I promise she is a 20 minute at the dog park and a cuddle thing the rest of the time!
Can cockers be easy to train for shed hunting ?
Google says just over an hour a day with them, youtube video says 20 mins in morning and 20 mins in afternoon ,I knew they could go for miles on end 😅,it's a shame when my brothers cocker who is a year and a half is always at work, this female dog is so energetic and I take it in the garden alot and an hour or more walk here and there. Trying to get it to walk beside me on a lead. However they do prefer being off the lead.
I’m thinking about getting a cocker spaniel, I’m use to active dogs as I’ve had a border collie and a Labrador but I’m told spaniels are very vocal, is this true?
Depends on the dog I think. The three spaniels I’ve had before were only vocal when they saw cats outside 😂
Pls Can you recommend a dog pedometer, would love to know how far our Spanador is running.
I'm stressed out and hes 2 weeks with me
Anyone that owns one of these dogs knows all that, We have had five of these dogs and they are great pets, we had one in particular that went for walks for 2 days or more and I can assure you she covered a lot more the 40 miles so I really do not know why you would be surprised at the distance that these dogs can cover, Just to add to that we where living on a large 90,000-acre farm at the time or I guess large by your standards but average by ours here in Australia at the time.👍👍👍
Wouldnt b with out my boys
Thx for the heads up. Doesn't seem like the breed is for our family.
Would they be happy as trucking dogs? I’m a long haul trucker in the US, considering getting a cavalier King Charles or cocker for a companion. I stop every 2-3hrs for a 15-30min walk/stretch during the day and walk about an hour in the evening. Is that enough for a spaniel?
ruclips.net/user/chaskat35
Check this out you may find it helps with your decision. Charlie breeds and shows cavaliers and is also a judge. He has lots of interesting things about cavvies on this channel. I have a cavalier and a cocker spaniel. Love them both.
I am well familiar with both the Cocker and the Cavalier. First off being that you are based in the US I am going to guess you are likely considering an American Cocker Spaniel. While the American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel have the same origins they are recognized as two different breeds and as such do have different needs and traits. For instance the English Cocker, which this video seems to be mostly speaking of, is still largely a working breed, where as the American Cocker was bred for both companionship as well as a working dog. As a result the American Cocker tends to have lower energy needs and prey drive then the English Cocker. However they do still have moderate-high energy needs, especially when young, and benefit from having at least a couple walks a day. My Cocker doesn't take enjoy running all that much but would rather slow down down and take the time to smell and explore everything possible during her walks. She also tires more from mental stimulation than she does from physical exercise.
As I mentioned I am also familiar with Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as my parents have had several. The Cavalier has been soley bred for companionship and therefore is noticeably less energetic than the Cocker. They are willing to get out and walk, run, etc alongside their owner but are also happy to lay back, relax, and do nothing. We thought for quite awhile about getting a Cavalier when we got our most recent puppy but what largely held us back was the many health problems the breed is plagued with, particularly mitral valve heart disease and syringomyelia. So if you do decide to go with a Cavalier be sure you go with a reputable breeder that health tests the parents. While that is no guarentee a puppy won't develop these problems, especially with syringomyelia, it does lessen the chance. Sorry for the long answer but I hope that helps out some.
NO
This is too much of a generalisation, individual dogs vary so drastically. Some working dogs can be calmer than show types
Should you get one if you have a cat?
if they are socialised from a young age and introduced properly, then yes!!
I've just got one , loves the cat
Cat bosses mine.
💪❤️

They need to use their brains as well as exercise!
My dog part c lucy l
UK border patrol at Dover has cocker that smell money. Not train Narco dog 😂. And I was arrested because I have a small folding knife tucked in my Jean pocket while trying to go to Paris.
You have all these vidoes, but YET I NEVER SEE YOU WITH A DOG! A REAL DOG THAT YOU ACTUALY HAVE EXPERIENCED ONE YOURSELF. ITS QUITE DISSAPOINTING TO BE GONEST, THIS ONE SOMBODY ELSE IS DOING YOUR JOB AND EVEN HE DOSENT HAVE A REAK DOG WITH HIS PERSON .. ITS ALL RUBBISH..IN MY OPINION!!!!
Tell me, good sir, have you ever considered speaking English? This guy has had a ton of cockers; these are talking head videos, in a studio, so expecting a cocker to bounce into frame at any moment is quite an ask 🙄
Black mouth cut
Before thinking to buy a cocker spaniel, you need to know how much money you have in the bank!
Horrible breed of dog.. Ive been bitten loads of times by cocker spaniels
Sounds like your the problem
Disagree the best breed of dog!
That surprises me. I've found them very good natured.
My grandpa had one that followed him everywhere, even to the grave. She was the best dog my family's ever had. It's always the owner never the breed.
Never seen or heard of any biting. I have two that never have.
Maybe ask why you get bitten when nobody else does.
