    Nice project Mark. Really enjoyed it.

    I've always liked the idea of not having to use a tripod, I'm hoping to build a gantry such as John Heisz. But I didn't know how to make the arm. This solves my problem

      That metal pole has really made laying out my shop difficult. It's about time I made it work for me!

      That was some thick steel! Those holes took a long time to drill! I should make an extended directors cut of this video and make everyone watch me drill holes for 20 minutes!

    Some may say a post in the middle of a shop is unlucky, but after watching i kind of want a post in my shop hahaha

      It has been a bit of a hassle trying to organize my shop around that post, I figured it was time to make it work for me!

    Wow that's a cool project! I also make RUclips videos, and would love to have something like that in my electronics lab and/or garage. I spend so much time moving the camera and tripod around.

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 лет назад +1

      I've filmed one project with it so far and it is a huge help. It's just more convenient than the tripod, but it is also capable of angles that you just couldn't get to with the tripod.

    I like the idea a lot. I was thinking that hanging a pole from the ceiling with the boom on it might be less intrusive to the shop. Anyway, you got me thinking.

  • @RCW-Designs

    This is a great idea. I believe Jay Bates made a similar design that rolls. It's weighted by a concrete filled bucket.

    Doing some digging looking at others solutions. Nicely done. I'm leaning toward a very similar solution, but by attaching a steel post to the ceiling.

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 лет назад +1

      Good idea. I'm currently considering cutting the post out of my shop to make more floor space. But I would leave the top 18 inches of it handing from the ceiling so I wouldn't loose my camera boom.

    Awesome l was just thinking of doing this in my shop. Dragging the tripod around and setting up shots takes up a lot of time

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 лет назад +1

      It sure does! My camera doesn't have a fully articulating screen on it... When going for high-angle shots I need to get a ladder to see what I'm pointed at. That's really my only complaint with my exact setup right now.

  • @ronyerke9250
    @ronyerke9250 5 лет назад

    Now all you need is a "clear floor" version. Maybe try mounting an automobile's wheel bearing assembly to the ceiling, and lose the pole/mast. Oh wait, that pole is part of the shop? Well, maybe one of your other viewers can use the idea.

    You could also use this to hold a really bright light for working on fine details.

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 лет назад

      You are correct! I've already mounted a LED light panel under the camera position.

    Really cool project! I was kinda hoping the project would have included installing the boom arm onto the metal hole, but I'm probably not going to be doing anything like it anyway. (And there's no sense in taking off the arm just to put it back on for the video.)

  • @sam-and-angela

    Looks great! I've got to come up with a similar solution for my shop. Tripod but also machine vibrations are killing my production value. :) What size is your shop roughly? Just wondering on spaces. Thanks!

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 лет назад

      My shop is 19x20 feet. Sort of an island in the middle where the pole comes up and benches/tools around the outside. There is 2-3 feet of space between the middle and the outside stuff.

    Great idea.
    How did you happen to have a metal pole and boom in your shop.

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 лет назад +2

      I believe WAY back, this little shop was used as a snowmobile repair shop and they used the pole/boom to pull motors.

    How do you lock the angle of the four parallele pieces ?

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 лет назад

      That's controlled by the tightness of the bolts running through them. Tighten them down enough that they hold whatever position you more them to, but not so much that you can't move them.

    What was the original purpose of the boom arm?

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 лет назад

      I believe WAY back, this little shop was used as a snowmobile repair shop. I THINK they used the arm to pull motors out and set them on a pedestal that was sunk into the concrete floor.
