Hello Tony, you can't have enough water and I have 10,000ltrs between 2 plots and I have never run out yet, but we have had several wet years. Nice video. 🌱Happy Gardening my friend, Terry.
I'm so glad you've put this video out.......such an important subject. I'm so careful with every drop of water at home but rubbish with it in the garden. Thank you for inspiring me to get on with my water collection set up.
Interesting video and NOT ONLY for Gardeners. I have no mains water and rely on my own borehole and electric pump for all of my water so rain catchment is also an important factor as we don't get anywhere near as much rain here in my part of Bulgaria as you do in Wales! LOL. Currently, on a power outage, I have no borehole water (until I fit a solar/wind turbine setup) so would rely on collected/harvested water to flush my toilet, wash dishes etc. I bought 6 x 300 litre water containers from a DIY shed some years back, but only have two left working on the south side as those on the North Side in the prevailing wind, froze and split so now, I am in the process of converting over to oil drums (the ones I bought had contained apple juice), but I haven't as yet got around to fitting the taps etc. My borehole water has a very high Limescale content so I have a special rock salt filter on it. Never ever occurred to me about algae and seedlings - in this case, I would have one water container especially for them and add a few drops of bleach/chlorine, that might work? How many metres high can that Bilge Pump lift and do you run it of a battery or generator?
Hi, Wow living from a borehole in a whole different game. The pump I run from an old car battery and use a small 10w solar panel to charge it when not in use.The pump has a head of 8 meters, Bleach would work in the tank but not recommended, You can get a small chlorine tablet instead
Such a FANTASTIC video Tony and so informative, thanks so much for sharing all your tips and info and sending you tons of love and heaps of happiness and GROWING POWER from N.Ireland to Wales for a WONDERFUL Sunday XXXX
I think its crazy that rain lands on the roof and heads down drain and out to sea. Yet we pump perfectly good drinking water to our houses and we use it to flush our toilets. Seems a little backward to me.
Any chance you could show us a close up of the connection and join of where the pipe joining pipes fit to the IBC's. I found out that there is a fine and course threads on the outlets (guess who got the wrong one! 😂). Could you fit an inline gate valve to slow down the bilge pump? Good episode 😀👍🏻
The ibs have both the wide and narrow, but I use a piece of rubber pipe from the taps so it makes no dif which it is the rubber pipe is jublie clipped on tight sealing the joint, then that goes to plastic pipe. i will take some pics and send them to you on Monday as im in work until then
Lol, that’s a good point, I think I worked it out for 500 kg and was going to have a drain off half way up the tank to drain to another tank to ensure it stayed at the 500?
Hi Jony, I’m Chairman of Fishguard Allotments and we’ve just bought 10 ibc tanks as an insurance when we have drought conditions. We have a stream for water but it dried up in June, hence the tanks. We’ve no roofs to collect water so I wonder if you have any suggestion how we can collect the rain water? I’ve made a few samples for collection but would appreciate your views and perhaps a collector, home made of course. We can fill these tanks in the later winter and early spring but would need a pump. By the way, tanks are spread over the site which is quite big. Any help would be welcome. Like the videos, still learn a lot at 78. Basil
It's staggering the amount of rain water you can collect, even from a small structure. if I had the room I'd love to have one of those. Take care. Alex
Hi, I'm in South Wales, no water on our site in Pontyclun, mad really when the river Ely runs at the bottom of the site. Are the containers easy to get hold of?
Hi, does any algae/greenness of the rainwater have any detrimental effect on watering plants. Also the IBC has some black film/growth inside the IBC tank, again is there any concern of using this water to irrigate, ie contamination.
No because the tank is not sealed. if your worried you could drop the level a few cm to allow for expansion, Ive used the same tanks for last 10 years without one splitting
fit a t piece to the pump outlet put a 1 meter piece of hose on one end put this back in the ibc now put a hose on the other end of t piece you will not get pressure build up when using hose it will be diverted back to the ibc so you can turn your watering hose off anywhere in your allotment because the pump will just put the water back in the ibc it is pumping it from
Good video... id just be careful with IBC’s as some really nasty crap gets shipped and stored in the. my main problem is the only roof i have is a house... ive got several 260l barrels at my house and will maybe buy even more soon to cope with next years summer weather. It will be enough as i only have a small plot.
I'm a complete newbie so please forgive me. What power source for you use for the pump? I know you day in the video it's a 12v pump. If it's a car battery how do you connect the pump to it please?
Simplify Gardening: Hi, thanks for getting back to me, I think I have found them, IBCs. What do you think they should be going for, just to avoid being ripped off?
I have chickens and I have had to change my chicken feed bins to metal...coz the rats were gnawing the plastic bins....so my question is if I were to buy tote tanks how would I protect it against the rats from gnawing the plastic totes?
i hardly ever water my outdoor plants and they seem to do pretty well, must be with having clay about a 1ft - 1ft half down in the soil, and it rains enough to not run out of water for the tunnel and greenhouse so i must do well lol
I have my ibc tank covered with black plastic due to algae. In summer of 2016 I got pneumonia and I suspect it was because I touch green water, wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy

A great watering system Tony. Thanks for sharing that information Video
Nice to see worzel gummidge still scaring the crows 😀
Yes he is still around, didnt take him in this winter as i lost the key, but i found it yesterday
I think its crazy that rain lands on the roof and heads down drain and out to sea. Yet we pump perfectly good drinking water to our houses and we use it to flush our toilets. Seems a little backward to me.
Totally agree, and pay a company for the privilege
Great really informative, round here people charge around £40 for a tank .
Yes that is about the going rate, just make sure you use only food ones
awesome setup for catching rainwater Tony, i come do with a few more water butts for my garden
I say that all the time lol. never enough if its wasting into the ground lol
Very helpful video, thanks Tony.
glad you found it of value Michael
Thank you for sharing . Really valuable
Great little video. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it

That's extremely interesting.
I've always struggled with water on my plot. Something I hoping to sort out this year
Me too, I’m thinking of building a water tower for my greenhouses, watch this space. Your channel is gr8 by the way. I’ve subbed
Get going water is a must if you want great crops
Gr8 vid I’m thinking about using one of those containers on a water tower type frame so I can gravity drip feed my greenhouses
Yeah thats another great use, just make sure the frame is strong and cant sink as each weighs a tonne when full
Lol, that’s a good point, I think I worked it out for 500 kg and was going to have a drain off half way up the tank to drain to another tank to ensure it stayed at the 500?
1 cubic meter of water is 1000 litres, a litre of water weighs 1kg hence 1000kg or 1 tonne
Brilliant video on my new allotment I have done the same very informative
Glad it was of interest David :)

build a small 2x4 frame over the tanks and put a roof over tem and use that to catch the water
It's staggering the amount of rain water you can collect, even from a small structure. if I had the room I'd love to have one of those. Take care. Alex
Cheers Alex
The one thing we're blessed with in Britain: rain
Oh yeah we have plenty of that stuff lol
Good, Good
Thanks Jalil

Im not too far from you, used to live in pencoed. they are easy enough to get expect to pay around 40 pounds each second hand
UK Here We Grow . Great, thanks, I'll start looking around.
Anytime

No Tony you will be fine. water the plants with it the alge will die on the ground dries out
New sub here
God Bless💕
your lowest winter temperatures don't cause damage?
No because the tank is not sealed. if your worried you could drop the level a few cm to allow for expansion, Ive used the same tanks for last 10 years without one splitting

The ibc's i use have only carried chillie oil in them so food products
Great video ... Don't suppose you have a parts list so i can copy this idea. 😊
No, sorry but I will be making a video later this year that will contain one
I'm a complete newbie so please forgive me. What power source for you use for the pump? I know you day in the video it's a 12v pump. If it's a car battery how do you connect the pump to it please?
Yeah you can run it off a car battery but I have solar on my shed and have run 12v outlets around the garden
Do you have problem of mosquitos for your system? How do you prevent them?
No problems at all, you could net the top to stop them if they are an issue
Thanks!
👍👍👍
thanks
where do you get a second hand ibc?
free ads or craigs list
that scarecrow looks like worzel gummidge
That was the plan, I made him 10 years ago
he lools cool, got the girl in my local book shop to order a copy of your book too :)
Hi, where on earth do you get those big white containers?
craigslist or freeads bulk food processors and so on
Simplify Gardening: Hi, thanks for getting back to me, I think I have found them, IBCs. What do you think they should be going for, just to avoid being ripped off?
@@H2Dwoat Where do you live?
Simplify Gardening: Equidistant-ish between Leicester, Coventry and Birmingham.
@@H2Dwoat so look at paying 40 to 45 pounds max for them. ensure they were used for food based products not petroleum or glues
I have chickens and I have had to change my chicken feed bins to metal...coz the rats were gnawing the plastic bins....so my question is if I were to buy tote tanks how would I protect it against the rats from gnawing the plastic totes?

Yes Josh Clay does retain moisture but also cracks during summer when its baked dry
I have my ibc tank covered with black plastic due to algae. In summer of 2016 I got pneumonia and I suspect it was because I touch green water, wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy
Ive not had an issue with alge in any of them in 10 years, seems a little strange to me
Bet this all pairs of this year ool
Do you really leave the containers open? Where I come from (Syracuse, NY) that would be mosquito heaven.
How do you protect it from rats gnawing the plastic 🤔
Rats have no reason to gnaw at it. it's just water
