    It's not excessive at all! The wise gardener learns from previous issues.
    Before last summer I never needed a bigger storage capacity than 3 rain barrels. Now I got 2 IBC tanks in addition and I make sure that all beds are mulched to reduce loss of moisture. Excessive? I don't think so. Just learned my lesson.

      Hello my friend, it depends on weather you want to water as some say just let the plants get on with it, but I must say having rain water for the plants is what they need. Really good comment.

    Terry, what a wonderful system you have devised. You will certainly have a good amount of water for the coming growing season. Do you also pick those blue barrels up for free? You have a good number there. I think they charge for them here. I don't think it's excessive at all. More of us should think of ways to gather water and keep it out of the storm drains. I always enjoy your videos because I see your wonderful ideas and wonder how can I implement some of them here in my hillside garden. Thank you for sharing. Catherine

    Remarkable. I am really impressed. Although I live in Northern Europe where (to be honest) most garden lawns are smothered in moss, summer drought is entirely an issue. No one around here thinks of saving water, in fact the local water company gives a rebate if rain water is NOT sent to the sewers - but very few do anything about it as the local ground is too wet. Taking an effort to store a decent amount from rain 'run off' would be a benefit both financially and benefit crops in the summer.

      Bringing water to the plot at a distance of 400 yards 40ltrs at a time just to keep my fruit alive was a task I don't wish to do again even though they now should be established and fend for themselves its nice just to wheel the Barrow empty and return with a bountiful harvest.

    I have 3 cheap black plastic dustbins in my back yard. I simply have the lids upside down with 4 holes drilled at the lowest point and weigh them down, when they’re full just put the lid on the right way up. They hold around 270 litres which will help as I have a water metre. Obviously as you use the water put the lid in collecting mode again. They can be in strategic places as well so less carrying watering cans around.
    I might get another couple as we move into spring.

    we are at the end of the street and we seem to get garden waste bins abandoned quite frequently outside. i have one already as a water butt and two more to follow suite lol. the full one saved me alot last year. i add a bit of duck weed to them as they help reduce evaporation and stop mossies from breeding.

    You COULD water the leaf mold where/as it is, but it'd take some additional engineering. A (or several) spray-bar(s) installed under the I.B.C. would enable you to water. The next question would be, will it make it more difficult to load, turn and empty the bin?
    If you have a mind to do, some open-cell foam (similar to your pond filters) in the holes missing bungs and the top drain holes will help keep down the mosquito population while still allowing water inside. It will need occasional cleaning though.

    • @terrykingsallotmentgardening
      @terrykingsallotmentgardening  5 лет назад +1

      I only really put it there out of the way so I am emptying it regularly now and its been used on my home made liquid plant foods and Compost mixes and activators video up on Thursday at 8pm. Good idea though and if I get another full IBC then I now have something to think about, emptying the leaf mould isn't the issue only filling it with one year old leaves.

      I missed that you are actively looking for ways to reduce what you grow, but going deep into how to grow better and cheaper. Almost the opposite of what I'm doing: growing more food, as simply/easily as possible and not bothering about the costs, because it's trivial compared to the value of the produce I'm harvesting. As you say "we all are different and we grow to suit our needs", that makes your's my favourite allotment channel on youtube, always challenging me to think different! : All the best - Steve
