  • How to make stools from shock absorbers and coil springs. This video shows how to make a pair of stools from shock absorbers and coils springs.
    ⚠️ Warning, these coil springs were not under compression!!! If you are attempting these and are not sure what you are doing make sure the springs are clamped as they maybe under compression and could cause serious injury when opening them. Also before welding it to the base drill a small hole in the shock to release the gas inside. Although it should be inert gas it is wise to do so to stop the gas pressure building up from the heat of the welding.⚠️
    The shocks and spring came from the back of an old VW Polo which you may have seen before in this video : • Seat belt buckle KEY H...
    The 50 mm x 25 mm box, flat steel and plastic inserts were all purchased from a hardware store and cost 25 Euro. The mdf for the seat was made from scraps I had and was glued together with gorilla wood glue.

    I am a mechanic, so allow me to predict the future for you here; The only thing that is holding the seat pads perpendicular to the ground, is the shaft of the shock absorbers. And it's a skinny shaft, as far as the options out there. When somebody sits down, they will be moving around on the chair, and their 60+ KG weight will shift *SIDEWAYS*. The springs won't stop that from happening. You have nothing in the design that can deal with the sideways forces, other than the shafts from the shock absorbers. And those shafts were never designed to take sideways forces, only up and down. In a car suspension, a shock would never experience sideways forces.
    So what will happen here is that the chairs will be wobbly, and the shock seals will start leaking pretty quickly, and you'll get oil all over your shocks. Worst case, the shock shafts will actually bend.
    Don't get me wrong. They *LOOK* nice, but you forgot to consider physics.

      Thank you for all the info, Its much appreciated. I have learned a lot about shocks in the last few weeks.

    • @Heretico1
      @Heretico1 6 лет назад +2

      I'm not a mechanic, but I use logic too!
      It is impossible for these stools to be useful for the same reason you mention. It has no support to keep it. The springs are going to contract but the shock absorber will not work in the way it is expected, they can not maintain perpendicularity, making whoever feels, ends up on the floor :(
      It's a very attractive design, but it stays there, in a nice design ...
      I'm sorry Eamon Walsh, but that's how I think it is

      Also a mechanic here. These will stand up just fine for a 200 lb person. These things are built to take a hell of a lot of weight. Also don't see them compressing a whole lot, unless they're very lightweight springs. I made a set of stools out of minivan struts, It hardly moves when I sit on them. Mind you I'm not a big guy.

    Nice job! Creative design and use of materials. I would have liked to see somebody sitting on them to see the spring in action. If I can offer a suggestion - no need to film every step. Film one part of a repetitive step and then in the next shot show them all done (or something like that). It keeps the interest of the viewer better. I like the music, too. Good choice. Great film quality, and the "beauty shots" at the end were nice, too. Well done.
