  • Protesters block Victoria Embankment, outside New Scotland Yard, as an emergency ambulance using emergency lights tries to get to St Thomas' Hospital. A police Chief Inspector tells protesters "it's down to you whether you makes space for it to come through or not" as other officers urge protesters to move out of the road. Some protesters had already locked arms and glued themselves to the road. The ambulance eventually passed. Several arrests were made.

Is that the one that was appealed and then quashed? It's a bit like the "red light argument". If you go through a red light for emergency services and trigger a red light camera, legally you have no defence. The law does not state you must contravene a red light to make way for an emergency vehicle, in fact it states the opposite and advises to remain where you are, and to move out of the way if you can without crossing the red light. Why? Because if you run the red light to make way for said emergency vehicle, you could then either cause or be involved in a collision, and of course you'd then try to blame the emergency service for wanting you to go through a red light.
The only exception is a UNIFORMED police officer who directs you through the light, this is quite uncommon and they will check that there is room for you to go through the light and stop safely somewhere before they do so, otherwise they won't. Why is it only police that can direct you through a light? Because only police have absolute authority and control over the roads. Police close roads when necessary, Ambulance and Fire service don't.

There is NO right to block traffic, pedestrians, emergency vehicles etc implied in the right to protest.
The fact that policeman left the decision to the protesters whether they allowed the emergency vehicle through shows police etc are now in cahoots with these protesters.
Under the LAW he had a duty to remove those protesters for being an obstacle for the emergency vehicle. He has an obligation/duty to ensure that vehicle has safe passage.
He failed to exercise that obligation/duty, instead he facilitated an unlawful protest thereby showing cause for his removal as a police officer.
