Piston-engined race cars can howl, growl, moan or whine. A tuned Mazda with its insane redline does one thing, and does it loudly - SHRIEK. I understand the Irish will not attend a race with a Mazda competing because they hear banshees. I had a 1972 RX2 with an 8K redline, and the dealer told me it really would go to 11K safely - the redline was set there simply because no American driver would believe it was capable of such a thing...and it was a four-speed. That car would do 70mph in first gear. I used to freak out my college friends with it. :)
+That Guy I know the RX-2 was early days, and 11,000 rpm isn't realistic for that model , but the car that won LaMans was limited to 10,500 rpm so that it would complete 24 hours of continuous high speed racing . There have been other races with different rotary engines , where they average 13,500 rpm , but obviously over much shorter distances and time duration . Also Apex Seals have been improved dramatically. As I say , billions upon billions of dollars have gone into piston driven motors , imagine if the same was applied to rotaries. Back in the day , Piston driven F1 cars of old , when they were allowed to do 18,000 rpm and more , usually only lasted 400 kilometres .
WAY to much power out of the small engine and terrible fuel consumption. a 3-rotor basically has 3 times the power of a same sized piston engine... they could make the 787b peak at 900 bhp impossible with other types of engine and that small size
Is it just me or was this 787B the best looking car to run at Le Mans? As well as the best sounding of course, this and the F2004 V10 are the best 2 sounding cars in history of motorsport.
+TheChamp 101 It's really what you like. The sound of the 787B is unique and stands out. If one is into Wankels, it certainly is the single best engine noise in the world. In terms of Group C piston engines, the C9 has an extremely pleasant engine noise. But for looks it'll always be the Porsche 962 for me, either in Rothmans or Jägermeister livery.
+TheCloudhopper One of those 787s make more noise than the whole start grid in F1 these days. They should record the sound (look that the clip called "The sound of Senna") and blast that on the track when they race the GP.
+TheChamp 101 In terms of looks, I prefer the Mercedes CLK-GTR from 1998. Rotaries are still the best sounding engines though (although that Merc's V12 is pretty damn close too).

I think it should be remembered that Johnny was rear gunner for the favoured Schumacher and, in fact won the British Grand Prix in a car which was set up for Schumacher. I wonder how many other drivers could do that.
+l34052 Fernando should retire and take his talents elsewhere. He's pretty much wasted at McLaren but is still able to drive well. I think johnny meant it , that way, not that Fernando couldn't drive anymore. I also think Fernando could do well in other motorsports or join mark Webber in the endurance series, type of racing.
Love my RX8, the handling is outrageous, even after 2 years of owning the car I laugh like a little kid when taking corners, downshifting and powering out of the corner. The RX8 may lack power, but in New Hampshire, with our winding roads, my RX8 will beat most cars, because there isn't much on the road today that can handle the corners at the speeds the RX8 can. The car with a 4 rotor engine would probably put me in the trees before long! :D
those gear changes are the best i have ever heard !! i cannot understand how is it possible to sound so brutal!! i know thiw is not an ordinary race car but the sound is out of this world! there are not cars anymore that sound like this when it comes to gear changes! i love this thing

Non pas que la musicalité des V8 américains étaient atroce, bien au contraire. Par contre c'était trop fort, trop de bruit, de vibration. Je n'avais jamais vu ça.

This car... sounds beautiful...I wish it could've stuck around in the LMP class. I find myself wondering how it would've held up against other LMP class cars if it wasn't banned after winning Le Mans. What makes me love this car even more than I already have is it being featured in the Forza Motorsport series. Mainly Forza Motorsport 6. And oh my God, it sounds amazing! By far my favorite sounding engine in the entire game. Period. It sounds very similar to what it sounds like here. Now I know that the Forza franchise doesn't always get the engine noises right, but the 787B is one of a few examples that's it done very well.
Amazing car and sound... I've always loved it. This is racing. Great video and with that amazing GPS map on the side, I could follow along with the driver. Well done
An amazing car making an amazing sound whilst being given a proper thrashing around its winning course. I do love Mazda, and always will. The 787B is one of the all time greats. Just goes to show what a plucky little Japanese car company can do...
Manoo42 Fair point. It's not the best LM race car ever by any stretch, but that wasn't my point. I know Audi, Porsche, Ferrari, even Ford have more Le Mans victories. That doesn't mean the 787 isn't one of the LM greats. To date, it's still the only Japanese victory (mostly luck, I know), and also the only rotary victory. The best Le Mans car ever? No. An important Le Mans car? Yes. That was my point. Now, can we all just sit back and enjoy that noise?
Manoo42 I not disagreeing about it being not the most competitive car, however Mazda retiring it because of that is total BS. The 1992 rules prohibited rotaries as they changed them to only allow piston engines based off the F1 engines of the era to reduce costs. Plus especially now it can't be the most over rated victory. Toyota's 2018 victory I believe surpasses that. Plus the 787B still managed to hold the Jaguar at bay which was still a good effort. As they say in racing, to finish first you must first finish. Any win in Le Mans, even Toyota's with absolutely no competition, is a big effort and shouldn't be down played.
What a beautiful sound, this is an amazing job done by Mazda with their Rotary engine, the only Japanese car maker to win the crown jewel of LeMans 24hour...until today 16.06.18. It is great to commemorate once in a while that glorious day of 1991.
I had a 84 GSL-SE RX7 back in the day. I know it’s only a 2 rotor, fuel injected. But I miss that car to this day. Handling, light, enough power, sexy design, perfect gearing, and a rippping red line. Proud to have owned an ancestor to the 787.
I knew once I wrote it that I did not explain it well enough. Apologies. I was referring to the change in policy regarding global warming (Trump winning) that would take the emphazise off of efficiency that would allow a return to those halcyon days. Like I said, I did not explain it very well. Actually, I should not have made the comment to begin with. Oh well. Again, apologies.
I always thought these kinds of racecars would have sequential gearboxes. Really interesting to see they use regular old manual transmissions. Love this video

いい音だとは聞いていたけど
ここまでいい音だとは♪
everytime ive watched this , my tears fall
Such a beatiful musin into my ear
And even, Herbert asked if he could stay in the car during the last pit. He was even sent to get medical care from dehydration! What a man!
787Bが再びサルトの地で喜びに唄っている・・・!!
BEST SOUND EVER!!!!!!!!!
It's like seeing a mystical and legendary creature comes to life, that's how iconic this car is.
Amazing car and sound... I've always loved it. This is racing. Great video and with that amazing GPS map on the side, I could follow along with the driver. Well done
Johnny looked like Gary Busey with that helmet on.
But then again... You need to be mad to be able to drive such a powerful car.
An amazing car making an amazing sound whilst being given a proper thrashing around its winning course. I do love Mazda, and always will. The 787B is one of the all time greats. Just goes to show what a plucky little Japanese car company can do...
So great it only ever won one race and was then retired by Mazda due to being uncompetitive....
CharlieFoxtrot06
I would class it as the most overated win ever.
Beautiful song from a R26B rotary engine. I love it. :)
Nothing will ever sound like this car, ever. I love the rotary engine, this is awesome
build a 4 rotor and you get pretty much the same sound
What a beautiful sound, this is an amazing job done by Mazda with their Rotary engine, the only Japanese car maker to win the crown jewel of LeMans 24hour...until today 16.06.18. It is great to commemorate once in a while that glorious day of 1991.
I can't begin to imagine how fun that thing is to drive.
Madre mia que placer. El mejor sonido jams creado 😍
やっぱり787B最高!
あぁ〜このソプラノサウンドがしびれる〜!!
ほんと、何度見ても鳥肌が立つし涙が出てくる。
I had a 84 GSL-SE RX7 back in the day. I know it’s only a 2 rotor, fuel injected. But I miss that car to this day. Handling, light, enough power, sexy design, perfect gearing, and a rippping red line. Proud to have owned an ancestor to the 787.
Amazing sound ! Like music .
the downshifts sound amazing
When LMP's used to be beautiful...
Guess what brother? We are going back to those glorious days, hear me now believe me later.
Rafael Lastra com oh really how so did they change the rules?
I knew once I wrote it that I did not explain it well enough. Apologies. I was referring to the change in policy regarding global warming (Trump winning) that would take the emphazise off of efficiency that would allow a return to those halcyon days. Like I said, I did not explain it very well. Actually, I should not have made the comment to begin with. Oh well. Again, apologies.
I always thought these kinds of racecars would have sequential gearboxes. Really interesting to see they use regular old manual transmissions. Love this video
This is the most beautiful sound I've ever heard come out of anything mechanical. Every time he hits the gas I just gasp.
Downshifting sounds like Curly from the Three Stooges...wooboop...wooboop...wooboop....!
1:55 - Sounds like Zoidberg running away.
I've never been a wankel fan but just listening to this car is like having a wet dream.
Honestly doesn't that just sound absolutely amazing 😩
この動画を見ると毎回感動する感動が薄れないのが不思議なくらい。素晴らしい動画!!
Esse som é música para meus ouvidos, lindo demais
