In my experience, the most effective and direct way to get in tune with your emotions is meditation. By slowing down thoughts and creating the necessary space in your mind, the repressed emotions can come to the surface and you can fully experience them. Negative emotions only go away when we allow ourselves to feel them wholly and completely. Otherwise, they just become repressed deeper within us, which is usually when we try to find outside sources (food, alcohol, drugs, etc) to either numb or distract.
Before Intuitive Eating, I would engulf every sweet treat in the building AND go to the shops in search for more, after restricting myself for weeks. With your help, I've been able to balance everything out - no restrict/binge cycle! It's strange to think that there is a tub of Ben + Jerry's sat barely touched in my freezer, for as and when I want it, when not so long ago I would have devoured the whole thing after so much deprivation. Thank you, and yay for food freedom! ❤️
Three years ago, having lived with a restrictive eating disorder for well over two decades, I wasn't ready for this. I'd see Abbey pop up on my recommended and quickly scroll past, fearing it my mess with my "willpower." Now, heading towards menopause and thinking about how I want the second half of my life to look, I am definitely ready, and I'm so, so grateful, Abbey. Thankyou x
I’m definitely the “numbing” type. Sometimes I binge so bad, I blink and see wrappers everywhere, I don’t even remember eating. And then it’s like I don’t feel anything. Thanks for the video.
When I feel lonely and unworthy, I like to wrap my hands around me and give myself a long hug. Then I tell myself that I love myself and that I am worthy because I am great person. I also like to thank myself for giving my body a great meal and how good it tasted. And while I eat, I often close my eyes to just feel all the flavours and enjoy them.
Interesting, my husband also closes his eyes when he is enjoying a meal! BTW, I remember a doctor saying that when you feel stress or overwhelmed, we can practice the 4-7-8 breathing (breath in count from 1-4, hold your breath for 7 seconds and exhale in 8 seconds). Anyway, greetings!
that must be a sign from the universe 😂 just googled "emotional eating" today, because i'm gaining weight and I think it's due to emotional eating because I want to "reward" myself or because I feel lonely and food comforts me.
My mom has type 2 diabetes, with a history disordered eating. She is constantly struggling between intuitive eating and keeping her blood sugar under control. I'm sure she isnt the only one who struggles with this dilemma so a video focusing on how to eat intuitively with diabetes would be useful for people like my mom.
Christy Harrison's Food Psych podcast had an episode about this pretty recently, might be worth checking out: christyharrison.com/foodpsych/7/diabetes-diet-culture-and-intuitive-eating-for-blood-sugar-stability-with-lauren-newman
I’ve been waiting for this video! Just wanted to let you know, that you have helped me so much with my relationship with food! I started to be able to enjoy the foods I love again without feeling guilty afterwards. My weight is more stable and even though (or probably because) I’ve stopped “forbidding” foods I stopped binging (so much). I just feel so much better overall. Thank you so much Abbey!!
Literally when she said to ask yourself "why am I eating this right now?" I'm polishing off a slice of triple chocolate cheesecake 🤣 So I told myself it's from my birthday this week, Aunt Flo is in town, and work sucks today so I DESERVE this!
Hi Abbey, I want to thank you for this series. I’m someone who was skeptical of the idea of intuitive eating, but I’ve realized that’s because it was always presented to me as “just listen to your body!” Listening to my body was really hard since I was an overeater as a child, then plummeted into restricting, binging, purging, and over exercising as a teen and young adult. I felt that at my default I was naturally an overeater and that my hunger cues were permanently messed up. You’ve shown me there is a lot more to learning intuitive eating than I thought, and I’ve been able to pull lots of useful info from this series. Thank you!
I cannot believe how moved I am by a video about eating habits. Your funny and compassionate way of educating about intuitive eating has changed my life and makes me want to be a dietician. Thank you so much!
« Cry as much as you want » I love you even more abbey!!! I realized years ago that it is completely ok to cry and it can really help! I’m an easy cryer and I’m proud of it!
I've been struggling so much with trying to get healthier and not gorge my feelings away. This is so helpful and much needed (almost cried to be honest...) No binge cycling. No guilty feelings. Just fueling my body and enjoying the journey.
Abbey I can't thank you enough. I've had an unhealthy relationship with food my entire life and I never even considered making peace with it until I started watching your videos. I really thought the only two approaches someone could have towards food were either starving or overeating. I'm trying really hard to get out of those toxic mindset that brought me so much guilt and unhappiness. You made me want to be kinder to myself and I never thought that could have been possible until I started watching your videos. My goal now is to reach a point when food doesn't control my life anymore and doesn't occupy so much of my thoughts, and I can't wait to get there.
Love this!!! As I've been healing my relationship with food ( partly thanks to you for setting me on this path), I've been noticing how I've turned to other coping mechanism (like hugs and music) instead of food. It's amazing how learning to listen to your body results in so many other healthy habits.
I’ve been needing this video! I noticed last week that I was comfort eating in the evenings after work because I was having stressful days that left me feeling drained and sad. Thank you Abbey for all these videos. They’ve been so helpful! I feel like I’ve learnt so much about myself because of you ❤️
I used food to help with ADD for a long time. I'd eat until I was nauseous. Then wait until the nausea subsided and then keep eating. It was the only way to focus. I am so grateful to medicine for doing that for me now and I am slowly dealing with my old habits of constantly needing something to chew.
I‘ve never known so much about food as I do now with your help! I am constantly learning, yet I feel more and more at peace with what I put in my mouth! You are truly needed as a spokesperson for treating our bodies with love and acceptance!
My problem is that when I’m out with friends and we have food in front of us, I can’t think of anything else but the food (even though I’m not hungry and I don’t really want to eat it). I can’t stop thinking about it until I either eat it all or the waiter comes to take it away. I can’t focus on what my friends are talking about because I keep waiting for someone to finish the plates so that I don’t have to. What can I do about this? :(
Me too, 100%! I'm currently working on changing my bad eating habits (binging, food addiction) and i'm actually doing really good. However last week i was invited to a BBQ and there was a whole table full of food in front of me for the whole evening. I couldn't think about ANYWHING else but the damn food. It was the first time i really noticed it and now i'm anxious about these types of occasions.
Sounds like food anxiety from childhood. My mom would always take my food so it made me eat quickly so she couldn’t take it and i’m very protective and have intrusive thoughts around food. Likewise someone can be told off for not eating up all their food and then feel that urge to eat everything even though they are full. Also, just being hungry can make you feel that way too. You’re allowed to fulfill your apetite! However, if it’s more than that, like a mental thing i mentioned therapy can and will help 💕😚 good luck!
The social life around me now is that people go mad with losing weight and some of them even refuse to eat just because they want to be skinny. I suffered from emotional eating too and after that I felt Guilty, but now I know how important it is to make friends with food and every food is valuable, and what determines your health is how you going to choose the food you ACTUALLY need. This intuitive eating helped alot and I just want to express my appreciation here. It's a long journey but I will stick to it 💙
I was shocked when Abby mentioned all the basic needs because for me most of them were a luxury, not something essential. Thank you for opening my eyes and realizing that I need to improve my relationship with myself and my environment.
For me, a restrictive diet *is* intuitive eating - if one believes that intuitive eating is eating what makes you feel good, satieted and happy. I don't have a gallbladder, and my body never adjusted to digesting fat, so I find myself with insane heart burn and indigestion to the point where I'm in tears on my bathroom floor when I eat it. So, intuitively, I just restrict fat as much as I can. Why would I choose ice cream and then throw away the rest of my day because I can't do anything due to pain, when I can just track my macros and choose an apple instead? It's not that I don't want the ice cream, I still have cravings, it's that I know self control is the best way to love my body by not subjecting it to having to digest a food group it literally can't. I'm sure there are others with allergies, intolerances or health conditions who understand what I mean.
I absolutely understand what you mean! My pancreas cannot deal with 80% of carbs so I eat a low carb high fat diet. I do crave fries or ice cream sometimes or just a piece of watermelon but I know it will irregulate my blood sugar immensely for the rest of the day and make me feel like shit so I avoid all carbs that give me trouble completely.
I swear to God Abbey, you're actually amazing. Completing my postgraduate degree in nutrition right now and your content is such an antithesis to the lectures, which can be dull AF and almost drown my passion for the subject. You have such an engaging manner about you and your knowledge shines! Wish I had lecturers like you. It's so refreshing to hear a dietitian speak about food as nourishment for the mind, body, and soul and the importance of not dichotomising foods, leading to all sorts of guilt and disordered eating when people think they've 'failed'.
This series is so informative! I used to think intuitive eating was "eating whatever I want in that moment" so I didn't think it would work, and I feel like a lot of people have this oversimplification stuck in their heads. I think that even though it's called "intuitive" eating, it's important to understand that it's a mindset, a lifestyle even, that you learn and practice every day ❤️
I am so much an emotional ester and this video is fabulous!! I am going to save it and watch it over and over again to stop eating through my emotions. Thanks 🥰
Low carb diets can definitely be intuitive eating as long as your listening to your body. I eat kinda keto mostly low carb and I eat whatever I want and most importantly feel good with what I’m eating. Carbs like rice, potatoes, pasta, and bread always made me feel sick after and I would always be hungry an hour after I ate. Now that I eat lower carb higher fat I don’t have those problems, not to mention I enjoy my food much more now. Speaking of keto I would love to see you react to more animal based RUclipsrs like Nicole burgess and health coach kait (that’s her RUclips name)
The question about low carb eating could totally have been me asking. I often find myself eating dinners of only a lean protein and a veg, like chicken breasts and broccolini or salmon and Brussels sprouts. Just cause I often find rice and stuff boring and taking too long to cook. However I think I get enough carbs from fruits and veg and complex carbs in the morning (usually from whole wheat bread or oatmeal ). Plus I eat so many healthy fats ... I eat nuts several times a day and several TBS of olive oil as well. So I feel fuller longer. My problem tho is added sugars.... I have such a sweet tooth
Low carber here. Yes you can eat intuitively definitely, after a while you only crave low carb foods that nourish the body, more than say carbs. Like bread for example isnt nutritious at all, but a square of cheese has protein and fat which keeps you full. Side benefit is that lower carb eating keeps blood sugar level which helps stop mood swings.
Bread actually isn’t “not nutritious at all.” It contains many nutrients that we need - just 1 slice of whole wheat bread has 7% of your daily fiber along with 3.6g protein, and calcium, iron, etc. Is bread necessary for good health? No, but bread, particularly whole grain, is far from bad for you (in moderation, like all things)
Love your episode-by-episode review of the principles of intuitive eating. Curious about developing awareness of the claims that intuitive eating and HAES is not inclusive of BIPOC. Still educating myself on this, as I've learned a lot from intuitive eating as an eating disorders therapist, but want to provide socially responsible care for my clients.
I gained 6 kg over two years eating intuitively, I didn't binge or eat tons of high calorie foods, took another year with a calorie counting app to get rid of it again. If you're a regular person, IE might work, my body however only burns 1.800 cals a day with moderate daily exercise but it feels hungry unless it gets 2000. Essentially my body wants to be overweight (I'd be fine as a hunter gatherer moving all day but I have a desk job). My advice would be to check for this before you eat intuitively or you're in for a boring ass year of counting calories.
Dinner menu: baked Mac and cheese, asparagus, and okra and tomatoes. That’s what my body wants. Not gonna feel guilty about the wonderful cheesy carbs.
When I was already on the thinner side and about to start Vyvanse for ADHD, my doctor told me to drop the carbs because you need to keep the weight on. So many protein shakes. And sad burgers without a bun. If it wasn't calorically and nutrient dense, I wasn't allowed it, because the meds annihilated my appetite and they didn't want me to drop too much weight. I can confirm the intense cravings for fruit. Then I got a bad concussion, had to go off those meds so I could be more relaxed during recovery, gained 80 pounds, and was allowed carbs/low calorie foods again. Sweet, sweet watermelon! It was *almost* worth it, just to be allowed a more relaxed diet.
Erin B Fellow ADHDer here, hi! I never lost weight because of my meds, because I just get an intense appetite once they stop working and just eat everything I didn't eat in the day because of the hunger suppressing side effect all at once late at night 😅
Drop vyvanse QUICKLY. It’s been being used as a diet pill in the bulimia camp. The doctor recommended it to me WHEN I finally hit a proper weight-when I USED to be not able to fit a size 0 (I was that small)
@@willowarceneaux434 I ended up being switched to Adderall, but only take it on days when I need to focus. However, it was a useful medication when I was on it, and I don't regret starting it, despite the diet I was put on. Medication allows me to function normally
I've totally been emotionally eating during the virus. I've gained back more than all the weight I lost with keto. 😡 Yes, I am angry with myself. But I totally recognize how I've been bingeing to numb out.
This helped me identify the reason behind my relapse. Gonna put on some good ol' Michael Sealey tonight and hopefully wake up motivated to face my struggles head on in the morning
I have a demanding job where I’ll be so hungry but can’t eat until much later. By that time I take my lunch I have lost my appetite and have to force myself to eat because I know that’s what I need. I think that intuitive eating is only for people who have access to food for most of the day :(
@@AbbeysKitchen do you have any advice for people like us who do shift work for a job? I often can't take a break for 10+ hours and am starving and exhausted by the end of my shift.
I have 2 questions regarding intuitive eating: 1. I have quite bad reflux and some other digestive issues, this causes a hollow/rumbly feeling that often feels like hunger, I find it very difficult to have to ignore these feelings and it doesn't feel very intuitive, but sometimes I feel very "hungry" right after eating and i feel even more stomach pain after eating something. So I'm not sure what to do. 2. I sometimes goes through periods where I'm very ill the the past I've lost a lot of weight in a short period of time (without wanting to) so often i had to force myself to eat just to maintain weight even though I didn't feel any hunger, this also doesn't feel very intuitive but I sort of have to do it. Overall I love the intuitive eating method and I've been trying it for a while but struggle with these 2 things ;) thank you for making these videos!
Love this! Perfect timing during quarantine 😂 would you consider doing a video on the sirtfood diet? I’ve been hearing about Adele using the diet to lose weight, but when I looked it up it was advertised as “turning on your skinny gene” which is just....so problematic?? Thanks for the great content!
I think it’s insane how many people hve such little knowledge about food my co worker was talking about trying to cut some food out or make smaller portions and I was like “omg I was at the cheesecake place and it’s like 1.3 calories” she had no idea that was in there, she didn’t know what low calorie dense food even was. I was so jealous she never went on a diet, I hope and pray she dosent fall down the rabbit hole of fad diets and disordered eating I showed her you. I hope she dosent start counting and stuff and she adds more fruit and veg😩😩😩😩😩
Thank you Abbey for this video. I needed it so badly. This crazy times are making me cope with food and I am not feeling my best. I was able to manage my ED in the past thanks to therapy and I haven't felt the need to purge in a long time, but I am binging a lot through quarantine and it scares me to trigger my ED again. So I needed this a lot. Thank you so much
I lost about 86 pounds using low carb diet. One thing I notice I was low on energy for a week. I always felt something was missing but I didn't know what it was. It turns out it was sugar. Lets just say it took about a week to get used it. Love the fact I would eat cheese and the only thing I didn't like its quitting milk. I love milk! You see immediately results but the thing is that you cannot be in this diet forever. I gained weight now and now its harder to lose weight. Ughh losing my mind sometimes and sometimes I go crying.
To be honest, I've been doing 'lazy keto' for few weeks and I allow myself carbs if i crave something so bad (e.g. having ice cream twice a week ). So far, It worked wonders on me as my intuitive eating really showes itself. I feel my insulin levels balanced, because I don't get that hungry feeling every two minutes.
Hey Abbey, do you have any experience with intuitive eating when it comes to autism? Being autistic comes with a lot of self-imposed restrictions and rituals surrounding eating, but it doesn't come from the place of dieting, it sort of puts the mind at ease. Would you consider filming a video about it?
As a mom, how do you protect your boy from diet culture?? Specially around family, when they make comments such as: “agh I’m so fat!” Or “I think I deserve this because I worked out!” Etc.
If I can identify that I'm not really hungry, just bored or needing comfort, do you think its good to allow myself to self soothe with some black coffee or a lightly sweetened tea, or would that just further the habit of emotional eating?
Do you have advice for how to eat intuitively if you don’t feel hunger?? I’m currently having to remind myself to eat and guess amounts because I have no appetite. “Forcing” myself doesn’t seem particularly intuitive, but otherwise I wouldn’t be eating.
I have bad mental health (3 different anxiety disorders) and I just started working out 5 days a week and I'm finding my mental health is better. So I agree exercise helps. For me my problems isn't so much over eating from my anxious emotions. It's that I don't eat.
Can you do a video or many more on alcohol? On a Friday or Saturday night, I often cannot stop at a cocktail and it is the biggest barrier to my fitness goals. Alcohol obviously has nothing to do with hunger cues. Yeah, I use it to relax after a long week. Oh and in socializing with other moms, wine is big...
I found this channel kind of recently and I looove your approach :) eating intuitively is something I would really like to adopt and also loosing the food shaming. A question I've had while watching the videos or just during the day is... How 'hungry' must you be for it to be 'good to eat'?. I found the 'levels of satiety' very helpful as little questions to ask yourself when you're eating. So is there hunger levels? And, when should you eat? The question comes from here; I can not feel hungry for 8 hours (I'm inventing a number but I mean 'a long time') like I'm fine if I don't eat but 'I can eat' and maybe I have this thing I already prepared so I eat, but I reaally wasn't 'needing' the food. I also think I probably shouldn't let 8 hours pass without eating, it must not be 'a good thing'.... so maybe I should have waited longer to eat until that 'feed me anything' feeling? 🤷♀️🙇♀️🥰
Hi Abbey, I've found that your video volume tends to be low (this has something I've noticed for awhile, not just this video). I was wondering if there was a way your editor could fix this?
question… on special occasions like birthdays, thanksgiving, christmas, or whatever, i always eat really small meals or not at all to “save my stomach” for the big special meal i’m looking forward to which is usually at dinnertime. its also not always intentional, either. i actually have less of an appetite to eat meals/snacks before my special meal because i’m looking forward to eating something else. can i use this mindset intuitively? i can see how this would be problematic to do all the time, but i only do this on special occasions
Thank you so much for this video! 😊 Could you talk about why some people lose their appetite when stressed, and how to deal with it? How to facilitate exercise recovery in this situation?
I'd love a video on how to deal with the social or family preassure to eat (or not) certain foods? Throw out my life its been a common problem for me to be able to deny to eat foods my parents made or bought for me even tho I don't really want to eat it in my family they're specialist in making you feel bad about your food choices.
A lot of the differences in how people feel on different macro-nutrient ratios has to do with where their ancestors lived during the time when hunter-gatherers lived. Some of these populations were high fat, some high protein and most higher carb. For example, people in the far north did not/ do not have access naturally to a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables due to short growing seasons.
I'm definitely in the "I hate food" group and sometimes eat till in pain. I've been trying to eat without a diet for many years but still struggle with intuitive eating
When you are in the beginning of the recovery from an eating disorder, before eating it is also advisable to ask ourselves if we are eating emotionally?
Today I decided to get serious about my strength training. My hip has degenerated a bit since I stopped dancing but my therapist tells me it is all muscle based. Sooo I can improve and get past this pain with some focused exercises. So silly me, I go to Pinterest to find beginner work outs and holy cow the diet culture workouts covered with skinny girls all over them are just a lot. Like a lot a lot. I don’t want to be thin. I just want to make my aging body stronger so I can avoid pain. Ugh. It’s gonna be a bit harder to wade through the crap.
What about the type of emotional eating that involves almost complete cessation of eating because some emotions or circumstances make some people lose their appetite? For example, the "heartbreak diet", or losing a job and only thinking about paying your bills/regaining employment rather than noticing hunger? Or when depression, mania, or anxiety in general causes a lack of appetite?
I get that "mouth hunger" thing. I am a bit fidgety and just feel the need to eat something for the stimulation sometimes. I also do the procrastination thing, but that's a secondary issue to a whole other thing (stress related). Anyway, lots of good stuff in this video. I like low carb. It's compatible with my health issues and I feel good. An intense exercise routine does not fit with my lifestyle. I think the secret to making it sustainable is not being afraid to go ahead and eat the carbs sometimes. Sometimes the body wants something because it needs it. BUT I don't know if that will work for everyone. I've had problems to overcome with my diet, or whatever you want to call it, but I've never felt guilty about eating something, ever. That's totally unrelatable to me.
Hi Abbey!! I'm wondering if you'd be interested in doing a vid on Jason Fung's work with intermittent fasting, as well as the clinical work he's done to help T2D patients. Thanks!
This video came in right when i really needed it I've been emotionally eating to the point where I feel numb everyday bcz I didn't want to face the reality of my problems so thank you
When I ended my 6 year relationship I used to not eat whole day and then eat enormous amount of fast food at night and right after I finish my food I started crying (because i was feeling so guilty about eating that much food and because I tough im going to completely ruin my health because of that way of eating). And I couldn't do anything about it for a year. Basically until i got over that break up. So my advice would be go to therapy deal with your emotions don't wait for emotions to just go away. Now I cannot imagine eating that much food it makes me sick even thinking about it especially fast greasy food.
Hi Abby I have a question: My stomach tends not to growl even if I am ravenously hungry. What other hunger cues can I use to determine how hungry I am on the hunger scale? Loving these videos, and you're looking so beautiful!
abbey can you talk about Phytoestrogen foods? how does this work? does this actually work? and what to have and what to avoid? and when? if you want to raise your estrogen levels, for examle. would love to hear more about foods that can potentially influence your hormones in a positive or negative way. i think this would make a great topic for a video and very informative.
I love your intuitive eating series!! This is definitely something I am trying to transition to as I am recovering from my ED. It really helps to watch your videos as well as other content that supports eating that aligns with intuitive eating. This is a concept that takes a lot of practice and I know it won't happen overnight but I'm glad that I can use your videos in my journey :)
Also great way to avoid emotional eating is avoid the docs that "prescribe" you to loose at least 50 kilos or whatever they pulled randomly out of their bottom just because you appeared in their office ;-) (it is always hard to soothe myself with food only a little after meeting anyone like that and rather channel the flustration into finding some way to file a complaint...)
You released this video the same day I came to the realization I prefer low carb/ high fat. I'm making breast milk which is mostly composed of fat. This is why I crave so much of it. If I eat too many carbs I crash so hard at the end of the day.
Thanks for sharing your experience
But I just cann't slow down my thoughts and breathe mindfully when I'm angry or upset about sth
Before Intuitive Eating, I would engulf every sweet treat in the building AND go to the shops in search for more, after restricting myself for weeks.

that must be a sign from the universe 😂 just googled "emotional eating" today, because i'm gaining weight and I think it's due to emotional eating because I want to "reward" myself or because I feel lonely and food comforts me.

Thank you for sharing. I'm so glad it is helpful ❤️
Love this!!! As I've been healing my relationship with food ( partly thanks to you for setting me on this path), I've been noticing how I've turned to other coping mechanism (like hugs and music) instead of food. It's amazing how learning to listen to your body results in so many other healthy habits.
I'm so glad it is helpful!
I’ve been needing this video! I noticed last week that I was comfort eating in the evenings after work because I was having stressful days that left me feeling drained and sad. Thank you Abbey for all these videos. They’ve been so helpful! I feel like I’ve learnt so much about myself because of you ❤️
So glad it is helpful
I used food to help with ADD for a long time. I'd eat until I was nauseous. Then wait until the nausea subsided and then keep eating. It was the only way to focus.
I am so grateful to medicine for doing that for me now and I am slowly dealing with my old habits of constantly needing something to chew.
I‘ve never known so much about food as I do now with your help! I am constantly learning, yet I feel more and more at peace with what I put in my mouth! You are truly needed as a spokesperson for treating our bodies with love and acceptance!
I'm so glad!
Abbey is a minde reader, I literally was thinking about this topic !!!❤️
Same!

I think you might be hungry. Take care of yourself.
Wow this is so me. It’s so annoying😩
Sarah Doe Feels good that someone understands 💕
I just bought a coloring book hoping that 30 minutes everyday after work, it will help to relieve some stress! Thanks Abbey!❤️
Hope that is helpful!
Ooooo I love this idea!
Ooooo I love this idea!
It's a long journey but I will stick to it 💙
Thank you for sharing your experience
@@AbbeysKitchen Thank you! Your videos are helping me alot x
I was shocked when Abby mentioned all the basic needs because for me most of them were a luxury, not something essential. Thank you for opening my eyes and realizing that I need to improve my relationship with myself and my environment.
"ask yourself how you feel " this made me cry
So glad it was helpful
Omg! This whole series is making me cry. It has been so helpful.
I'm glad that works for you
I absolutely understand what you mean!
How professional are these videos? I love the stylish graphics and gorgeous kitchen design. You speak so well, it's like you're on TV.
Thank you, I'm so glad it is helpful!
This series is so informative! I used to think intuitive eating was "eating whatever I want in that moment" so I didn't think it would work, and I feel like a lot of people have this oversimplification stuck in their heads. I think that even though it's called "intuitive" eating, it's important to understand that it's a mindset, a lifestyle even, that you learn and practice every day ❤️
I'm so glad it is helpful!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing, I'm glad that's working for you
Abbey Sharp me too!
Glad that works for you
@@AbbeysKitchen its the only way of eating for me that doesnt require effort to lose weight. I dont feel deprived at all yet still lose the pounds.

So glad it is helpful. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have a look at this
@@AbbeysKitchen And just addressing the privilege around intuitive eating!
Thanks for sharing your experience
Dinner menu: baked Mac and cheese, asparagus, and okra and tomatoes. That’s what my body wants. Not gonna feel guilty about the wonderful cheesy carbs.
That sounds so yummy!
Yum!
Thanks for sharing your experience
Drop vyvanse QUICKLY. It’s been being used as a diet pill in the bulimia camp. The doctor recommended it to me WHEN I finally hit a proper weight-when I USED to be not able to fit a size 0 (I was that small)
@@willowarceneaux434 I ended up being switched to Adderall, but only take it on days when I need to focus. However, it was a useful medication when I was on it, and I don't regret starting it, despite the diet I was put on. Medication allows me to function normally
Why do I keep eating after I'm full? Usually this is in the form of a second helping. I keep eating because it's good 🤷
I've totally been emotionally eating during the virus. I've gained back more than all the weight I lost with keto. 😡 Yes, I am angry with myself. But I totally recognize how I've been bingeing to numb out.
Thanks for sharing your experience
This helped me identify the reason behind my relapse. Gonna put on some good ol' Michael Sealey tonight and hopefully wake up motivated to face my struggles head on in the morning
I have a demanding job where I’ll be so hungry but can’t eat until much later. By that time I take my lunch I have lost my appetite and have to force myself to eat because I know that’s what I need. I think that intuitive eating is only for people who have access to food for most of the day :(
Thanks for sharing your perspective
@@AbbeysKitchen do you have any advice for people like us who do shift work for a job? I often can't take a break for 10+ hours and am starving and exhausted by the end of my shift.
10+ hours? You have an IR issue. Hope you have a union you can talk to to sort that out.
Enjoyed this video, was very helpful. Also, I always think it but never say it, I LOVE your kitchen!
Thank you! I'm so glad
Amazing video. The amount effort put into this is commendable.
Love this! Perfect timing during quarantine 😂 would you consider doing a video on the sirtfood diet? I’ve been hearing about Adele using the diet to lose weight, but when I looked it up it was advertised as “turning on your skinny gene” which is just....so problematic?? Thanks for the great content!
Thanks for the suggestion
I think it’s insane how many people hve such little knowledge about food my co worker was talking about trying to cut some food out or make smaller portions and I was like “omg I was at the cheesecake place and it’s like 1.3 calories” she had no idea that was in there, she didn’t know what low calorie dense food even was. I was so jealous she never went on a diet, I hope and pray she dosent fall down the rabbit hole of fad diets and disordered eating I showed her you. I hope she dosent start counting and stuff and she adds more fruit and veg😩😩😩😩😩
This is my new favorite of you videos. Excellent information!! Thanks, Abbey!
Thank you!
Thank you so much
I'm so glad it is helpful
I lost about 86 pounds using low carb diet. One thing I notice I was low on energy for a week. I always felt something was missing but I didn't know what it was. It turns out it was sugar. Lets just say it took about a week to get used it. Love the fact I would eat cheese and the only thing I didn't like its quitting milk. I love milk! You see immediately results but the thing is that you cannot be in this diet forever. I gained weight now and now its harder to lose weight. Ughh losing my mind sometimes and sometimes I go crying.
Thank you for sharing your experience
Abbey, your answer to the viewer question was really really helpful. Thank you!!
I'm so glad!
You present the material so clearly and thoroughly! This was a very helpful.
Glad that has helped
Hey Abbey, do you have any experience with intuitive eating when it comes to autism? Being autistic comes with a lot of self-imposed restrictions and rituals surrounding eating, but it doesn't come from the place of dieting, it sort of puts the mind at ease. Would you consider filming a video about it?
Yes that’s a complicated one and tbh IE isn’t necessarily always compatible with these issues
As a mom, how do you protect your boy from diet culture?? Specially around family, when they make comments such as: “agh I’m so fat!” Or “I think I deserve this because I worked out!” Etc.
This topic is on the list to discuss
If I can identify that I'm not really hungry, just bored or needing comfort, do you think its good to allow myself to self soothe with some black coffee or a lightly sweetened tea, or would that just further the habit of emotional eating?
Thanks for this!!! We are overstressed as a society and overweight as a result.
It's so sad.
Sidenote: I also love ottolenghi
Thanks for sharing!
Do you have advice for how to eat intuitively if you don’t feel hunger?? I’m currently having to remind myself to eat and guess amounts because I have no
appetite. “Forcing” myself doesn’t seem particularly intuitive, but otherwise I wouldn’t be eating.
I have a video where I discuss this topic that you might find helpful: ruclips.net/video/PerKp6lYOWE/видео.html
Abbey Sharp amazing, thank you so much!
I have bad mental health (3 different anxiety disorders) and I just started working out 5 days a week and I'm finding my mental health is better. So I agree exercise helps.
For me my problems isn't so much over eating from my anxious emotions. It's that I don't eat.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope the video was helpful
This was really great info. Seriously, so helpful and great!
I really think this is my favorite video on this channel. It's really provided a value to me. Thanks for making it!!! 💕💋

Thanks for the suggestion
These are so enlightening, I never knew I did some of these, Im truly in awe. I love these videos Abby!
I'm so glad!
Exactly what I needed!!! Been trying to get into intuitive eating for about half a year and it can be so overwhelming!!
So glad it is helpful
Thank you for the feedback
question… on special occasions like birthdays, thanksgiving, christmas, or whatever, i always eat really small meals or not at all to “save my stomach” for the big special meal i’m looking forward to which is usually at dinnertime. its also not always intentional, either. i actually have less of an appetite to eat meals/snacks before my special meal because i’m looking forward to eating something else. can i use this mindset intuitively? i can see how this would be problematic to do all the time, but i only do this on special occasions
This was so helpful and really eye opening, I need to listen to this a second time! Thank you so much for making this series!!! 🙏
Starches are a major IBS trigger for me, and I find sugar to be super habit-forming, so... low carb for me XD
Thank you for sharing
Good luck with your fitness journey
What about the type of emotional eating that involves almost complete cessation of eating because some emotions or circumstances make some people lose their appetite? For example, the "heartbreak diet", or losing a job and only thinking about paying your bills/regaining employment rather than noticing hunger? Or when depression, mania, or anxiety in general causes a lack of appetite?
This topi is on the list to discuss
Yes yes yes loved this video! So true you should only feel guilty about food if you stole it 😂😅
👍👍
Thanks for sharing
Hi Abbey!! I'm wondering if you'd be interested in doing a vid on Jason Fung's work with intermittent fasting, as well as the clinical work he's done to help T2D patients. Thanks!
I'll have a look!
Great Intuitive Eating No. 7 Blog, Abbey!❤️
❤️❤️
I must have missed "low carb diet" part in this video. Was it mentioned somewhere?
At the beginning the question was, ‘what if you don’t want to eat the recommended amount of carbs?’ And she was basically like eat what feels good
This was SO helpful. Thank you!
This video came in right when i really needed it I've been emotionally eating to the point where I feel numb everyday bcz I didn't want to face the reality of my problems so thank you
So glad it is helpful
Trying to learn intuitive eating now.. doing all the research I can to help the process. Thanks Abbey
Glad it is helpful!
Thank you for sharing your experience
Hi Abby I have a question: My stomach tends not to growl even if I am ravenously hungry. What other hunger cues can I use to determine how hungry I am on the hunger scale?

Also great way to avoid emotional eating is avoid the docs that "prescribe" you to loose at least 50 kilos or whatever they pulled randomly out of their bottom just because you appeared in their office ;-) (it is always hard to soothe myself with food only a little after meeting anyone like that and rather channel the flustration into finding some way to file a complaint...)
You released this video the same day I came to the realization I prefer low carb/ high fat. I'm making breast milk which is mostly composed of fat. This is why I crave so much of it. If I eat too many carbs I crash so hard at the end of the day.
