Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison Review: Is Bigger Really Better?

- It’s time to test drive and review the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison pickup truck!
The Colorado is Chevy’s midsize truck, available in both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel drive versions. The ZR2 Bison is the hardcore off-road version of the Colorado, designed to compete with trucks like the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road and Ford Ranger Raptor.
The Colorado is currently in its 3rd generation, which began in 2023. The truck debuted in 2004 and replaced the beloved Chevy S10, and that original generation lasted until 2012 before the 2nd gen arrived. As of this video, all modern Colorados are 4-door crew cabs with 5-foot beds. They also all have 2.7-liter, four-cylinder engines, but with varying outputs, and eight-speed automatic transmissions.
The bottom two trims on the Colorado offer either 2WD or 4WD, with the base WT trim starting at $31,000 for rear-wheel-drive, and the next trim, the LT, starting at $33,500. Four-wheel-drive adds about $3,000. The base turbocharged engine option offers 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while the step up, the “TurboMax,” makes 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet.
The top three trims - the Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2 - are more off-road-focused, so they only come with 4-wheel-drive. The Trail Boss starts at $39,000, the Z71 starts at $41,000, and the ZR2 starts at $48,000. They all come with the 310-horsepower engine.
The Bison package is a $12,000 add-on for the Colorado ZR2, which beefs the truck up even further for off-roading with features like Multimatic jounce-control dampers, all-weather floor liners, and lots of upgrades from off-road company American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). The ZR2 Bison also changes out the regular ZR2’s 33-inch tires for 35-inch ones.
The ZR2 Bison looks like it has an aftermarket lift kit and all kinds of mods, but it’s straight from the factory with a warranty - and that’s part of the charm. The rest of the charm comes from the fact that it’s a toy, not really a work truck, and that it’s compromised. There’s limited visibility out of the front, side, and back; there are no power running boards, making the truck a literal stretch to get in; and the fuel economy is dismal, especially for a vehicle with only four cylinders.
But there’s so much to love about the ZR2 Bison. Its interior is funky yet classy. Its suspension controls bumps and dips like magic. Its driver-instrument cluster and infotainment system are crisp and easy to read, and they show all kinds of off-road gauges. It cruises surprisingly well on the highway, and you don’t get a lot of intrusive sound from the road or wind. It can get you into and out of almost any location with no problems. Its metallic blue paint is stunning, and the black exterior accents make it look so tough.
I didn’t expect to love the ZR2 Bison as much as I do. If buying an off-road-ready mini monster truck is on your wishlist, it’s a pretty good choice.
Thanks for watching my RUclips channel. Enjoy the drive!

What's always worth pointing out is that today's mid-size trucks are effectively yesterday's full size trucks. This Colorado is the size of a '90's - 00's Silverado.
Yep! You’re right. I talked about that in my Ford Maverick review
The thing I've always liked about Alanis is that you can tell she's really an enthusiast. Even when theres a criticism, its from a perspective that "cars arent perfect, but what a time to be alive".
Awwwww omg thank you. That’s exactly how I feel!
I purchased the bison about a month ago. I’ve taken it off road as well as my daily driver. I love it. Only thing i hate is it has no digital rear view mirror and the wireless charger doesn’t work. Gas milage varies city i get around 16.4 miles and highway around 18.5. It says 16/16 but it does get better on highway. I have gotten used to the no functional rear view mirror by adjusting my side view mirrors and if i need to see behind me quickly i just use the camera. Great review though. My wife that is 5’5 loves to drive it and just shimmies right on up in it. I purchased a foldable step stool, that i keep in the back seat, and my 87 year old mother uses to get into the truck without any assistance. So far I’m loving this truck and i came from a 2010 taco!
We almost titled the review “Step-Stool Sold Separately”! Thanks so much for watching 🤠
You somehow made a review of this uninteresting-to-me vehicle worth watching for 30+ minutes with great editing and humor--well done! Digging the new channel thumbnail too.
Awwww omg thank you! For real! It means a ton
My Dad had, and my brother still has, full sized trucks and occasionally mid or compact.
So I have been around them my whole 55 years … and this is one of the best truck reviews I’ve ever seen.
You actually do what they did/do with thier trucks.
Some woods
Some roads
Some city
Very excellent!
Keep these great reviews coming Alanis 🤠
Omg! Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed
Love the grassy filming spot!! Puts the truck in its rightful place.
Also love the suspension shots!!
Thank you! It was such a cool spot. It looks like a mystical forest on camera!
The Pittsburgh tools bit really got me
Husband gets credit for that joke. It was so funny
@@AlanisKingI’m sorry, did you say husband??
One caveat in this video: I talk about how cool the startup graphic is in the Colorado, but after I talked about it, WE COULDN'T GET THE TRUCK TO DO IT AGAIN. That's why you don't see it as b-roll!
That's sad but it's okay
Jeep might have stolen it to use in their Gladiators? Just changing the image to a Gladiator of course. ;-)

The video was great! Looked great, sounded great and Alanis made it even better. Great job 👏
Ahhhhh thank you : )
Another great video! The litter jump cuts point out the truck were great. Having to use the infotainment to gets your lights on. That's a complete head scratcher for me.
Thank you 🤠 I wanted to try that pacing and see what people thought!
I really enjoyed this video. Been thinking of buying a Colorado for a while now, this new body style is so cool. Just discovered your channel too, you got a new subscriber.
Ahhh thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed! Have a fun car search, no matter what you choose
Hi Alanis! My favorite line from the video: "An inline 4 cylinder, BUDDY!" 😄
You have a new photo! Nice! Thanks so much Francisco 🤠
@@AlanisKing, yes I do, I wanted to personalize my profile a bit more. Thanks for noticing! 😎
Wonderful job Alanis!!! This hypes me up because I can only imagine what you'll do with a truck like this Colorado and go fully off-road for the entire review!!! Also, I love the fact that even though this is a big, huge, brawny truck....you still have that classical music! Lol! I love it!! I was waiting for the "Welcome to the Jungle" guitar riff! 😆
Hahahaha we may have some guitar soon! To be seen! Thank you for watching!
Phenomenal video 💥
That means a lot coming from y’all ❤️
well done, as always!
Thank you 🤠
That Raptor looked like it was screaming “get back into your place, little one. Let the big boys do the taking” 😂. Good review! I love how this truck look.
Hahahaha thank you for watching 🤠
Damn Raptor, being toxic metaphorically without even speaking!
(BTW, Ford guy here -when buying "American")-
Look at that suspension unit. Fun Fact, its developed and built in Canada :) The suspension, not the truck
Awesome suspension
These are my favorite Alanis reviews: The guilty pleasure cool cars 😎
Thank you always 🤠🤠🤠
Nice new logo
Great review, this truck is far from anything I'd personally be interested in but well done! Congrats on hitting the 20K subscriber mark by the way!
On another note, it would be unreal if you would be able to review another performance car like a Mini Cooper S or Porsche 911 at some point.
Ahhhh thank you! Trying to get a 911, but Porsche doesn’t have any in Texas right now 😞 I called to ask
If someone could hype me up like Alanis is with this Colorado I bet I could accomplish anything and everything
Happy to hype you up. You can do it!
Everything is bigger except the back seats. It's too bad. Used to have a first gen s10. I would love a midsize if my three kids (one is very tall) could fit comfortably in the back. Bought a new Sierra to replace my 2002 Sierra largely due to the back seat space.
And it’s so hard to get in the backseats of the Bison!
Love the film style and keep it coming! You should eventually do a build collab or something with big time, or a cameo on cars and bids podcast! Much love from Atlanta ❤️💛💚
Much love back! We’d love to do some collabs - just hard to work them in while working full time 🤠 We’ll make it happen sometime!
@@AlanisKing yeah i know its going to take time building a channel but you guys are doing great. you guys seem to already know what works and what people want (good honest car reviews with personality and humor) keep it up 👍
New cars and the lack of headroom is disappointing. Love your new logo btw! That red really pops!
Thank you 🤠 We figured we’d see what people think, that way we don’t have to change the pic regularly like on other profiles!
Very thorough review, nice job! Your presentation and editing is getting better with each video.
Chevy is really milking the 2.7 for all it's worth. I'm surprised they aren't offering a variant of their 3.0TT in these upper trims, especially considering the Ranger Raptor offers exactly that.
I'm surprised how tall the ZR2 Bison actually is. You were practically the same height as an F-150 Raptor at 24:40!! I totally agree with the need for a rearview camera mirror, at least in the configuration you drove. Like you said, GM has that option in many models and it works really well. Having that huge spare tire really cuts out your rear visibility.
Yes! Thank you so much for watching. It’s sooooo tall
My mom bought one kisluxbag and she loves it. It had been there for over 10 years when she went out with it.
Nice video. This version is so much better looking than previous versions (Malibu front end cracked me up!) Can’t they rotate the spare 90deg so it’s the same orientation as the other wheels? The missing headlights button is another dumb quirk - when it breaks good luck fixing it
Thanks for watching 🤠 yeah the spare tire really needs to change orientation - it’s super in the way!
It’s crazy to think full size square bodies from back in the day would be considered compact trucks today!
Yes! It is
Good video. The hat plus the lighting situation makes it so we can't see your face or eyes at least. I don't know for certain but I feel like being able to feel like a presenter is looking at you probably is a positive thing.
I usually don’t wear a hat, but it’s 100 degrees in Texas right now! I had to on this video. I won’t always. Thank you for watching!
As ridiculous as the bison is from a practicality standpoint, I can’t deny that thing is beautiful in that blue.
It REALLY is
Crap! How did I miss this one!? Damn you, RUclips!!! I have notifications on 😢
Ahhhh thank you! I appreciate that so much
(Also, RUclips has been wacky for me this week, so maybe it also was wacky for notifications)
You should make stickers that say "Inline-four BUDDY!". I'd buy some :p
HAHAHA honestly not a bad idea
My 04 Tundra was the size of today’s midsize.
Make small trucks cool again! I loved the original Colorado’s size and look, would be perfect if it came out today. Maybe Chevy should make a Maverick competitor! 😂
I looooove a small truck
you’re literally my comfort person i love you kislux !
Was that turning radius done in four wheel or two wheel? Did you check the turning radius in two wheel?
I was in two-wheel in the city. Still very wide
@@AlanisKing That gets worse in four wheel
Damn those yoga pants scream yoga in the front and donuts in the rear.
This is an extremely weird comment to make on a video about a car
Anyone else find it hard to be interested in a truck when Alanis is on screen 😅😅 deffo seeing more and more of these, which btw in the UK aren’t considered mid size, but more ‘extremely flipping massive mate’… and “I can’t park it in the spaces at Waitrose”…. 😂
They’re massive here too! But also normal? America is odd
@@AlanisKing I don’t understand America, but then I live in mud island where we can basically do a day trip to the other end of the country
It’s like driving a bloated submarine with how poor your visibility is, bison is really a great moniker for it. I really can’t imagine why anyone would buy this, especially at an absolutely insane 12000$ on top of the already bloated ZR2 package price.
To be fair, if you have the money for it, it's a very cool truck
Clearly you would be a candidate for the trail boss.
Shout out to hobo freight 😂😂😂. Idk if I still trust a GM long term, but it looks amazing.
Hahahahaha
This has the be the record holder in “Alanis units”thus far.
Hahahaha Silverado coming up!
@@AlanisKing I predict 6 Alanis units for the Silverado!
TFL did a fuel test on this same model and got a shade over 19mpg on the highway
Better than 16 for sure
Normally you convince me I'm into cars I would not be interested in otherwise. This one did the opposite. I wanted one of these but now I really don't for sooooo many reasons like there being so many cameras but no rear-view camera in a truck you can't see behind you
Hahahaha I really did enjoy this truck. I left the week being really into it, whereas I wasn’t tripping over myself to drive it before I got it. But it does have some huge compromises.
Thanks for watching 🤠
kislux You are so well-informed about luxury accessories and bags. You've obviously done your due diligence and the comparison to the US is very informative...because of course, I live in New York. thank you very much.
They should have mounted that tire sideways. That would drive me nuts having the rear view mostly blocked
It’s soooooo wild to just look at a wall of black in the rear view mirror
I’ve had my bison for a month now and that doesn’t bother me now. I adjust my side view mirrors and use the camera. I don’t get why they don’t use a digital rear mirror since the one in the car is useless.
I'll be honest, some of the older Colorados were pretty ugly in Chevrolet spec. I see a little bit of Tundra in some of the design cues and that's not a bad thing. Great video as always Alanis :)
Thank you so much for watching 🤠
@@AlanisKing always :)
You wore a hat! Shit just got real.
Hahahaha it's 100 degrees in Texas, so we are struggling in the heat
It feels like what this thing needs, ironically, is even wider fender flares. Hear me out. The biggest problem with this truck is steering angle. A wider front track would, of course, need to be complemented by a wider rear track as well. To get the tires to stay legal from the factory, it would need EVEN more fender clearance - and that clearance can't come from the inner fenders.
It would look even wilder with wider fender flares
$65,000 for a mid-size pickup?
Unfortunately, even a Ford Bronco can cost that much if you aren’t careful about trim and add-ons.
Bronco is SUCH a good vehicle
That's wild that the gas mileage is that bad. My 8000lb van gets around 15mpg with a 5.3l v8. But if you can afford the payment for the truck you can probably can get gas.
So fair
@@AlanisKing glad to see you’re active on your channel missed seeing you on Cars and Bids!
Builds a badass offroad baby truck... Installs non-LED interior lights, lol.
I hope they make an Isuzu version I can afford. It's a cool looking truck, though. I'll have to wait 5yrs till it's $20k.
Good plan 🤠
“That’s why my tools say Pittsburgh” 😂 Looking forward to the Alanis/Harbor Freight collab!
Hahahahahaha Harbor Freight, call me
Why did Chevy not include a rear view camera in the rear view mirror? Is that something you mentioned that I missed? Thumbs up granddaughter (-; I commented to early granddaughter. You covered it (-;
I’m not sure! I wish they had! Thanks for watching 🤠
Is this a ford ranger alternative
This is different than a ford ranger raptor. Raptors are more of a Baja racer. This is more of a rock crawler. It has multiple under carriage protection that the raptor doesn’t have. This can go faster off road just adds a lot more protection.
Dang this thing must be creeping up on $70k for a mini truck.
Holy crap I was almost right! Only short old rich guys will spend that much on a truck this small
Hahahaha it is a big investment!
$70k for a four cylinder is a lot
Great video. I would watch you read a dictionary. 🎉🍺🤘
This is so sweet! Thank you 🤠
I think the tires have a lot to do with it tbh. I have a 2017 Sierra got 21-23 hwy & city 17-19 mpg; after a level kit & 12.5” x 33” tires & removed the air damn lip from bumper my hwy mpg is now 15-19 mpg hwy; 13-16 mpg city
Yeah! That’s why I say there’s a big cost to riding up high 🤠
I have a Colorado ZR2 bison 2024 and I have saved for 20 years for a new truck. I am glad I waited for this model. I absolutely love this truck. Love everything about it. Not a single things about it not to like.
CONGRATULATIONS! That’s so cool! I’m glad you got what you wanted!
I would help you climb into the truck bed
WHY DO TRUCKS KEEP GETTING BIGGER?? It kinda looks sick tho 😅
Literally I feel the same way
16mpg is absolutely insane😭😭
Hahahahaha I know
You don’t buy this truck for mpg. But I’ve found my real world better than the stated numbers. And it’s similar to my old 2010 taco v6 i traded it in for.
4 days without power after the hurricane, and all I can think is - “how’s the AC?”
Are you without power? I’m so sorry! We never lost it here. Bad storms, but things mostly stayed in order
@@AlanisKing Just got power back today. 7 days without. Joys of the Gulf Coast.
Hi guys. Don’t just thirst on Alanis anonymously. Like and subscribe.
Like and subscribe 🤝🤝
5:39 16mpg? My 2017 Frontier Pro-4x with the 4.0 V6 gets better.
16!
16 mpg for a midsize truck is a deal breaker, definitely need hybrid engine.
It’s a big con for sure
Wind noise is from seat. Trust me
Nice hips
Alanis in thumbnail: Is that a Bison in your driveway or are you just happy to see me?
Me: It…It’s the new Bison, Alani-Are you okay?
Hahahaha
That looks huge! Iykyk 😬
It is very tall
Alanis Troop: assemble!
ASSEMBLE
Damn that’s a thick thirst trap, thank you Chevy for this beefy 🦬
It’s def a beefy truck
Hell yeah
Hell yeah!
Ford Ranger Raptor anyday over this... Done
That’s fair!
Man that engine size joke just wanted to burst. 😂😂😂
Love a good joke
Ugh. So sick of these screens on the dash. They age like the chocolate milk my kids hide under the driver's seat
Hahahahaha very funny description. Screen bleeding is real!
Nice leggings
4 cyl no thanks
Hahaha I did talk about that as a negative!
Oh well. The Nissan Pro4x is the only one that has a 6 now.
No one buys an off road biased truck for fuel economy at least not me anyway. And you lost me at steer by wire. No thanks.
You don’t have to agree with everything I say! Difference of opinion is good. Steer-by-wire does make maneuverability really good in big vehicles
I love kislux that on the butterfly bag it says auguri / tanti auguri which means happy birthday
