2024 Chevy Silverado Review: Workhorse or Status Symbol?

  • It’s time to test drive and review the 2024 Chevy Silverado High Country!
This High Country is a short-bed, 4-wheel-drive crew cab truck with Chevy’s 6.2-liter V8. It makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All of that goes through a 10-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels.
Chevrolet trucks have been around since 1918, but the Silverado didn’t arrive until the 1999 model year. This year belongs to the fourth generation, and we’ll go through the Silverado 1500’s full history and generations in this video (including the new electric one!).
When you spec a Silverado, you first choose whether it’s a regular cab, double cab, or crew cab. Then you choose whether you want a regular bed, extended bed, or short bed. After that, you pick 2WD or 4WD.
Even in our selections for this loaner truck (4WD, short bed, crew cab), there are NINE different trim levels. Some models focus on off-road capabilities, some on luxury, and some on work.
The High Country edition is one of the more luxurious Silverados for sale, and you can buy it new with a 5.3-liter V8, a 6.2-liter V8, or a 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel. The base model starts at $48,000, while the High Country starts at $68,000.
My High Country had a few optional features: the $2,300 engine upgrade to the 6.2-liter; a $900 suspension package with adaptive ride control; a $400 active exhaust; and a $7,100 High Country Premium II package that includes General Motors’ Super Cruise hands-free driving technology, a power sunroof, all-weather floor liners, 22-inch wheels with chrome inserts, all-season tires, a rear camera mirror, and a bunch of other things.
Living in Texas my entire life, the Silverado, for me, has been a staple of my daily existence. I see them everywhere, and they communicate about who’s driving them: the blue-collar employee vs. the status-symbol driver vs. the big boss out in the country. It’s fascinating.
Driving one for the first time was so cool. I felt like I belonged in Texas in a whole new way, and it was so cool. That in itself is one of the big reasons to own one down here.
The Silverado is a good truck, and Super Cruise makes it an amazing vehicle to road trip. Hopefully this video shows you why (and what compromises you’ll make to get it).
Thanks for watching my RUclips channel. Enjoy the drive (and the video)!

The worst trend in the car industry is making features a subscription. 25 dollars a month is very pricey for a car you own and features you're used to. Alanis hot.

Yeah, you aren't alone. BMW attempted to roll a bunch of their features into a subscription and that crashed and burned. Thankfully, they realized the error of their ways and stopped their insanity.

If a car company expects me to ever pay them a subscription they are quite mistaken.

Ordinarily I would say you're right, however I could see the justification for GM to charge the subscription in this case. For a system like this to remain functional I could imagine there's a lot of ongoing maintenance required for the data fed to the cars, it's not just a feature of the car that is set and forget.

The sign of a great automotive RUclipsr is when you can get people to watch 27-minute videos about vehicles they have zero interest in. Which is exactly what you've done. I know when I watch one of your videos, I'll (a) learn something, and (b) get some laughs along the way. In this case, I learned so much more about GM's Super Cruise than I'd ever known before. Bravo!

    Two notes for y'all:
    1. I'm sorry we couldn't put b-roll of the startup screen in the video! It doesn't always happen, and we couldn't catch it on camera by itself. Just know that it looks pretty!
    2. One thing we didn't include in the driving section is a fun fact: The Silverado's eye tracker WILL work on just one eye. If you have one eye covered or are missing one, you are still free to use Super Cruise! I think that's such a cool (and necessary) accessibility feature

My boss got a lower spec work truck.
Its is GIANT. Its very comfortable but its so large its impractical. Its way too high and the dash and hood take up so much visual space.
It was at least 50k for a four cylinder with a turbo. We will see how long that lasts. He uses it to tow too.
The previous boss who was old passed away and he had this mindset of just buying a new truck as he thought the cost of maintenance through the life span beat the difference. He was a boomer. I dont think he realized how expensive trucks have gotten before he passed away.
My brother was in the new Colorado and sent me a pic of the back seat. Despite being a full cab the back seat had less space than a subcompact coupe by the looks of it.
Its disappointing how your only options are giant full size trucks that are far too expensive and large.
Or midsize trucks that are large themselves. Far too expensive and also really poorly packaged. I remember sitting in the last Tacoma and suprised how suge a large truck had a miserable back seat. My 4runner is much better packaged.

@@compuserveuser2779 We have the "euro market" pickups as well...VW Amarok, Mercedes X-class, Ford Ranger, but these are all smaller and more like "mid-size" pickups. Hence the reason the imported American pickups are more popular (especially for towing).

Man...I gotta say, at these price points unless I was going to be hauling things or needing a giant truck bed all the time, I just can't rationalize that cost and the amount of wasted gas mileage. Unfortunately the used market isn't always better though...Really would love to see the return of smaller single cab pickups with larger engines. It's a shame regulations won't allow for it. Hopefully they'll find a way to do it in the near future without requiring you to drive a small motorhome around.

I love the Silverado so much! My grandfather used Chevy trucks from the 50s up to the 90s for his farm, then it was my father and his brothers for their business. I have memories of my dad filling the bed up to the roof with wood logs, then attached a huge trailer also filled to the grim with wood. Suspension bottomed out, chain on all four wheels, travelling into very deep mud. When he got out the truck to turn the lockers on the front wheels, I knew it was getting serious. Nowadays, we have a 2004 Silverado for hard work and a 2019 for light work and daily driving. I have Chevy tatted on my heart.

Having owned 3 of the 4 generations of Silverado, I do think GM is improving their trucks over time. Having to wait until the 4th gen to get rear upper air vents is annoying but a very welcome improvement for rear passengers in the summer! Currently having a '21 LTZ just before the refresh, I had to add felt tape behind the plastic interior pieces so they don't squeak which is ridiculous for an upper trim vehicle. I intentionally bought a folding box cover that sits just under the 3rd brake light cameras so I can still use my rearview mirror and bed cameras with the cover folded up against the cab. The ZR2 Colorado should 100% have a rearview camera mirror! I totally agree that buying Super Cruise for an intentional road trip is about the best way to utilize it if you're not driving 100's of miles a month on the highway. Having used Super Cruise and Tesla FSD, Super Cruise is definitely a more convenient product when it works since you don't have to nanny it. There are patches of highway that it just doesn't want to work even on the nicest days outside while Tesla can figure out 99% of paved roads. I could go on and on about Silverados (the only vehicle I've ever purchased) but this comment is a book in itself 🤣 Thanks for another awesome car review! I've personally had both the short 5'10" and now the longer 6.5' bed, the longer one is much more useful for hauling! A queen size bed can fit with the tailgate shut. If you carry sheetrock, plywood, or 8' tables the MultiPro/MultiFlex tailgate is super handy to flip up so you don't have to worry about them sliding out the back! The only downsides is that it does have a slightly larger turning radius, like an HD truck, as well as it being tighter to fit into a garage.

As a car enthusiast (especially sports cars) from the northeast, I have absolutely no idea why the huge luxury pickup is a thing. The price seems completely obscene to me, and in no way would I ever consider driving one of these things flexing. But, I do appreciate the utility of a good pickup. Just give me the heavy duty chassis, powertrain and suspension, and a rudimentary workaday interior that I can get splashed with mud. That is my idea of a tough, cool truck. But what do I know...I drive a Porsche 911?

I can’t speak on trucks or any of the other features since it’s the complete opposite of everything I want in a vehicle. I’m also curious about what areas prefer the Chevy over a Ram or an F150. We were a GM family growing up, because they truly were the best for the value and held the highest resale values, but after my purchase of a 2014 silverado it was a disaster, extremely cheap build quality, and my AC condenser started leaking 200 miles out of warranty and wasn’t covered, it was a very common problem for 2014-15 model years. Add to that the recent scandal of GM selling their customers driving data to lexis nexis who then in turn sold said driving data to customer’s insurance companies, who then either raised rates or flat out cancelled customer policies has made it to where I will never purchase a GM product ever again

Now that Tesla (FSD Supervised) has hands-free driving, SuperCruise has really lost whatever edge it had since it works on all roads and not just the pre-mapped roads. I've got it in my 2018 Model 3 and have been trying it out every day on the way to and from work as much as I can. It really has come a LONG way since it first came out. I've yet to try out SuperCruise myself but just on concept it wouldn't work on 90% of my daily commute which would make it a very hard sell.

I'm looking forward to FSD 12.4.2 which can track your eyes using the camera above the rearview mirror so you don't have to scroll the volume wheel or turn the steering wheel to tell the car you're paying attention! I feel like that will put Tesla above GM for highway autonomous driving since the roads don't need to be mapped for FSD to work and you can just sit there like using SuperCruise.

It is time to switch over the new LT or Trail Boss trims for 2025 look great or go with the RST or WT 2024 trims. Either way you get a better vehicle than this version in the chevy line up.

I'll rant one more time! Listening Mary Barra?
Break out Corvette as a brand. Relocate Cadillac, Corvette, and Hummer (or some other premium truck brand) down the street to a new, premium, quiet, lounge style (Read: AUDI!!!!) dealership. Sell amazing, super engineered cars and trucks there. Make them with better materials! No fuzzy headliners! Move the prices up another 10-25% to pay for it!! Amazing! But seriously Barra, your current dealership model is killing you. "Come on down and see Big Jim and don't forget to finance for 108 months and buy these overpriced extras and don't skip the undercoat! People buying Audis or Lexuseseses don't want to be pestered about undercoat and they don't want to talk to Big Jim.
Then have Chevy selling cars and more typical trucks. Move Buick up market to Acura/Infiniti level near-luxury. Have Chevy and Buick at a more traditional dealership like they are today. Maybe keep Big Jim, but come on. He's just gotta go.
Move GMC back to its roots. General Motors COMMERCIAL!!
Clean all this up in the minds of the market. Clean up your line ups, too. Build fewer models, but use the savings to build better cars.
