  • I've been looking forward to installing flappy paddles in my 86' Trans Am since I started the l83/6l80e conversion a few years ago. It's been a slow build but the day has finally come! However after the install I may be having second thoughts..

    I really like the look of the paddle shifters! it would be neat to have the factory bird horn cover to really make it look more stock. Thanks for the video!

    The module in the steering wheel is surrounded with aluminum and is grounded to the chassis. If the antenna to that module was divorced from the pc board and could be extended into the column, it would probably work more reliably.

    Love the paddle shifters on the 3rd gen autos. Makes me want to do something like this to a '80 Turbo Trans Am and making it all look factory.

    Dude I'm jealous! I have the same system (with the screen) and have had it mounted in my track car for about a year. I just haven't wired it in yet (aftermarket column, no horn ring/wire). Soon though, especially after seeing you get one installed.

    The delay is usually the power management settings. GM has it turned way down so you don’t break the transmission under warranty

    regarding the intermittent-ness working of the shifter, if you can find what contacts on the board send/receive the upshift downshift signals you could in theory rewire it to be hardlined and not deal with it working only sometimes
    dunno if they have a diagram of the board or not but its an idea
    and the 150 dollar wired one, you could 100% diy a paddle setup, take apart the switch and wire some buttons to the shifter contacts and you got yourself a way cheaper paddle shifter. throw in some 3d printed paddles connected to the buttons and you are cooling

    Hey Matt, it would be nice to see some updates on the firebird... Especially updates on whether the paddle shifters are more responsive... I'd certainly like to see more interior work get done... Great content as always. Huge fan of the series.

      I’ll have another video on the firebird soon. I want to get the interior together before the fall. The paddle shifters have grown on me. They actually work really well after I moved the transmitter to the steering column.

    My Escalade with manual shift sometimes won't upshift at certain gear and rpm. I use manual shift on it alot. Maybe the shift buttons are getting sticky 🤷. Right now I'm looking at either paddle shifting my Avalanche or just installing a NV3500 manual trans in it.

    The issue is it is a radio transmitter that has been encased in thick aluminum. Basically a faraday cage. What they need to do is have a small rubber duck antenna come out, or a simple wire antenna. But the antenna has to be outside of all the aluminum.
    One thing you could do is power the unit using a small 12v lithium ion battery and see if it cuts out if you still think it is the power delivery.
    Btw dorman does make a replacement for the horn contact for thirdgens but it is a pain to replace.

    • @lsxmatt
      @lsxmatt  11 месяцев назад

      Some kind of antenna would probably make a huge difference. A wire would be easy to hide too.

    You mentioned the box was hot when you pulled out from the dash board. Maybe its gets too hot causing it to fail and it needs to be left in the open to stay cool. Or it needs a fan.

  • @jeffreylarsh1724
    @jeffreylarsh1724 11 месяцев назад

    My guess is that the metal of the dash was somewhat blocking the wireless signal

    My wifes v6 camaro had them. I didn't like it at all. Was slow and wouldn't let you use them hard. Either of us really ever used them. It was annoying in a parking lot sometimes when I would put in manual not thinking and it would drag a bit until I realized and paddled it up until I could slip it into D. If it was a bit more responsive it would be great. That said its a pretty cool adaption.

    Ever think about doing a carbon fiber wrap to the hood and headlight covers and maybe even the spoiler? Hell of a lot cheaper than the real thing and would look just as sweet.

    • @lsxmatt
      @lsxmatt  11 месяцев назад +1

      I was thinking about wrapping but the car needs a stupid amount of prep for the wrap to stick. Theres some weird bondo cracks on the door and the paint is peeling in so many places

    • @retrobear9367

      @@lsxmatt oooooh definitely. I'm wrapping my 2003 Vette. I was dumb enough t get a Maaco paint job. It's got runs, cracks and now chips. Gonna be about 1k for the prep. I am horrible with sanding and whatnot. So worth it when it's all done though.

    4:10 Guys don't EVER do this. The column is collapsible and once the plastic retainers break it's non-repairable, and you have to get a new column.
