- Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes looked like an interesting spiritual successor to PS1 era JRPGs, sadly, western translators have ruined the game with a pathetic translation that not only lectures the player with identity politics but is also just woefully incompetent.
I don't often talk about JRPGs, but there are plenty I'm nostalgic about and in a quiet year for Western RPGs this could have been worth a shot. I feel sorry for many of the Japanese developers who likely didn't want this but now we're all stuck with it.
The only thing that can likely save this now is a fan translation... hell even AI is looking good at this point.

Western "localizers" has been exposed months ago when Japan started to use AI to translate when its been made known that they insert these politics into various anime and video game dubs and localizations. This is just another case of hiring the wrong localizers sadly. I dont think its the dev's fault for this, they just didnt know better.
If it comes to ai i am pretty cautious but the Japanees useing it for translation is a good thing. Just like you said they now can see if translaters inject political messages.
It's about hiring the cheapest option, since they're an indie startup and most of their value in the game will come from domestic profits. The cheap Localizers know this and use it as leverage to be able to just do whatever the hell they want with it, since they're being paid low dollar so they give low dollar work.
Unicorn Overlord is a good example of how to get your localisation on point. They even used Baldurs Gate 2 voice actors!

This is why people are turning to AI for translations.
I feel like I should start marketing myself as a translator or editor with my prime selling point being I don't give a toss about politics or social issues of any kind. Maybe I've been in the wrong business the whole time.
In my experience, publishers hire localizers and the devs are mostly hands off.
This also seems to be an uniquely American/English problem because this - usually - doesn't happen on Spanish/French/German translations.
Nah the thing with the pronounce was also in the german translation. I was hoping it wasn't though, as usually german localizers are more faithful to the japanese script. Oh well, maybe we get a fan translation in the forseeable future.
Sorry, but the other languages you mention are translations directly from the wokEnglish. Because I'm playing the game in Spanish, and is just as ruined. Its verified on X.
The problem our localization is 99% of the time based on the english version
@@kagon01 Yeah, I just realized that in Eiyuden's case the english script was used as base for most western languagues (chinese seems to use japanese as base). Really sad to see.

I am 54 and can't remember that i ever hated someone(don't know what that feels like). But screwing over my beloved hobby gaming, is starting to come close to it i think. This really has to stop!.

I speak Japanese, unfortunately not well enough to play the whole game and easily understand it, but well enough to have picken up A LOT of changes and this just in the first hour of the game.
I still haven't picked up politics (I'm not from the US) but I could clearly see a change of character as I played with the original Japanese audio.
EDIT: I just played a bit more, in Portuguese, and apparently it's been translated from English (and not the original) so it is horrible as well and the more I play I can see this inserted crap on the translation.

There's a difference in being able to communicate in a language and reading/speaking about many different sorts of topics.
I have friends who have done PhD in Japan, have better proficiency than me, are teaching Japanese and still find difficult to understand certain shows.

If you think Casey Loe is bad, Brian Gray has dipped his hands in the pie too. He worked on Gotta Protectors for the 3DS also threw in a misgender joke AND a white asian joke when it was supposed to be a serious question about finding a champion. Because "it's the 80s hun". He said in an interview something about trying to tone down japanese sexualization of women so they look more appealing to the west.
I expect bad/mixed reviews bombs including mine lol because of it.

Hopefully there's a proper translation being worked on as a mod. Love the Suikoden games, shame they hired the wrong people. Authenticity is what we want not this people who write their own fanfic bs.

The developers really should demand the Western translators they hired to fix their shit or otherwise cancel the contract and demand their money back. This must be illegal. Heck, they could even have a case to sue the localizers like this for lost profit damages. But if they're a smaller indie studio they may not have the time or money or even energy to do that, sadly.
There’s this sad idea that popped into my head, that the Japanese publisher/developers of these games that get localised will look at poorer sales and go “I guess they don’t want this over in the west” but that’s not true and they deserve to know the real reason why people don’t want to buy their games. It’s like a chef who puts in all their effort to make a great meal but the waiter ruins the whole experience for the customer by being confrontational and rude to them.

It is common knowledge by now that when you hire a Western company to localize, it should be in their contract to stay as faithful to the original as possible or they will face a hefty lawsuit.
The developers are probably forced to use this translators, either by threats or blackmail by the administration.

I am spanish, and the "are you sure its a he?" is still there, so no luck... Don't know if here we are translating the game from English to Spanish though.
I wish fans of anime, manga, and JRPGs who actually speak Japanese would complain to these companies about this stupid western CA gender politics crap inserted into the English localizations.
japanese honestly dont care as long as the game makes money in the west. Sometimes games that do really well in the east dont perform well in the west and future projects get cancelled so... as long as they are getting their stuff they could care less.

It’s my first game of the franchise so I have no comparison at all but the French translation (based on English one I think ) is pretty cool and the story very entertaining.
Is it that bad for the original fanbase? Does it really change something storywise ?
This isn't even just a woke case, there are several characters like Perielle whose character in the JP version is more of a brat, but the way of conveying it is more noble, in EN when I read it it's more of a bitchie, and in my opinion it really changes the personalities, the localization doesn't understand how the personalities of some characters were created by the original
In some other cases, such as Lian, Francesca, Momo and others, they change many meanings which makes their personality change too.
Is it possible to sue those translators ?
If it was done in my country, yes because of consumer protection laws. But it wasn't done here.
Saw a post going over 9 different convos. The translators make all the characters sound like edgy 12 iq children. The entire feel of the game and story will be ruined. Leading to you not being able to take any of the characters seriously or get immersed in the story.

@@caxshen that line didn’t even have anything to do with gender politics though. It was a jab at the other character humanising a golem. There is absolutely nothing about that line, or the context around it, that suggests she is shaming the other for “misgendering” a golem.
It’s so dumb that these grifters have your balls nailed down SO hard they can get you seething at their own misinterpretation of 1 line of dialogue among tens of thousands. It’s sad honestly. There are genuine cases where what would otherwise be good entertainment is ruined by forced messaging, but this one is just dumb.
Actually stop and think about it for a minute. Use your own, human brain to actually think for yourself and you’ll realise how much you’ve been duped for that ragebait ad revenue. Then you can join us enjoying this fantastic game 👍

@@caxshen well I am about 8 hours in, talked to every npc and haven’t found a single instance of “wokery”. The tone is a bit silly and camp and reminds me a lot of the Final Fantasy 7, 9 and 10 writing. The development of some of the characters has been genuinely really intriguing.
Do whatever you want man, but I promise you the writing has no agenda and it’s imo an unmissable game for a jrpg fan. Brought back that old feeling.

I'm 100% with you here Esteldan, great mindset. I will still play the game though and try to ignore this woke madness. Thankfully I'm also fluent in french and german, so we'll see if those translations are any better (I guess not to be honest). If the voices are loud enough, there might be a chance that these woke translations will be corrected in some future patch. Let's just hope so.

This is simply terrible, i had this in cart and was going to buy on release. Suikoden 2 is one of my favorite RPG's of all times.

Thank you for bringing this up. The way they told the story and showed characters is far worst then what they promised. The game is lacking in having emotional story and characters I can relate on. Whyy so maaany children, little young inmature cute things, it just killed the Suikoden lore... I was skipped majority od boring cutscenes. The next thing is music. The music is bad. The tragical story has to be driven by appropriate intense emotional music. Big love to Miki Higashino. I want my noney back but I will leave it as its is and Play old Suikoden.

@@Re-PhantomZero I speak dozens of languages, including a bit of Spanish and a bit of Japanese. None fluently however. specifically this a UK and USA/Canada problem. There is less of it in other languages, though I've heard there has been a big push in German these days.

Most localizations sucks unfortunately, this isn't some rare occurrence. The worst part is that Nexusmod will ban any mods trying to fix this, like they did for Fire Emblem Engage recently.
I just learned japanese because of this. Running jp voices + localized subs is very funny, they often say completely different things lol

I'd say a fan translation is the best case scenario. It seems like it was an incompetent translation at every level so it can only be improved from here.
Just let chatgpt do the translation and correct the mistakes/stuff that gets lost in translation with someone who speaks japanese.
It's super fast and chatgpts capabilities to translate are amazing. I write stuff in english and my mom can't understand english. Chatgpt translates it in her native language and besides some minor parts the translations are quite on point.

Hating on a good game with bad translations is understandable but in the end its these good games that will get dropped for more of the trash games which is what the woke want and most people are playing into their hands without even seeing it or caring just so they can stick it to them for bad translations

Spanish version uses the same script as English, so you're out of luck there

So I watched this whole Video, and I think you need to do a ted talk about debate and supporting your point. You did nothing but straw man and provide weak *WEAK* examples that any sensible person is not going to see any kind of 'woke agenda' behind unless you are looking for that kind of thing.
Now if you want to just speak into an echo chamber so you receive validation of people shouting back your believes. If you want to make your point spend more time maybe learning to read the Japanese for yourself, or spend more time looking at the entire context of quotes instead of isolating them as much as possible. If you feel like you want to expose this game as 'ruined' you need to put in more work than this.

One of the reasons these localizers get away with murder practically is because some people refuse to Care on the issue and just throw these people money. If they like the game play it's no skin off their back cuz they'll just ignore it. That is how these people continued to flourish after we find out what they've done. And some of them are people that even side with us against companies like SBI. They honestly have no right to complain about games being altered if they go ahead and compromised so easily like this.
I wanted to try and get into the game, but I can't now. I absolutely refuse. I don't care if a game is good or not anymore, if I see something like this then the developers are not getting my money. I'll either sell the high seas or walk away because I'm tired of this.

Never owned or played their previous JRPG, so I was interested to check this game out. But, interest gone. Money saved for Stellar Blade, thanks you hack gaming industry.

I am strongly against DEI but this game barely has any messed up lines. Sorry but this isn't a great example of woke/DEI destroying something. The game, however, has valid criticism about the overall quality for not meeting the high expectations of Suikoden fans.

Thankfully you can find mods that remove all this shit on both the forums from multiple people or for the moment if you've already paid for the game. nexus mods(till it gets banned by similar woke mods) under the name "Eiyuden Chronicles Translation Fixes" by Flarex16. Because the mechanics are sound and the art is decent. Still i wouldn't buy the game till an official word has been released by the dev team.
Though i doubt they yet know about it. because similar mentally ill people run their discord and instantly ban anyone who even remotely comes close to mentioning the english translation isn't perfect.

Honestly I'm about 10 hrs into the game and saw all of these in real time, your blowing it out of proportion lol it's really not bad and seems like your just looking to complain. Yes some lines are cheesy but that's just old school jrpg feel for us in the US. I'm loving the English dub so far and have not found anything grating.

Localization ruined the title. Localizers changed the demeanor of characters, the subjects being discussed, and needlessly injected millennial reddit tier cringe post style writing where it did not exist before. Its sabotage. I will own this game when there is a faithful translation to the original and not before.
