  • I've had a few people ask me what my rig is when I troll for salmon in the Puget Sound. Figured I would make this video real quick showing what I use. Hope someone gets something useful out of it!

    If you don't have a down rigger, do you have recommendation what else you can use that you have tried that works? Thanks

    I usually run a red little plastic bobber stop with 2 beads size depending on what plug I'm using but usually 1 smaller and 1 larger so I doesn't go in the plug when I use the super cut plug. I use the bobber stop so I can adjust it on the fly lif they're short striking

    I’ve been enjoying your channel. My fishing pal and I have been having good luck with the pink and silver brads plug.

    Try that plug above I-5. Good plug water so I bet that'll work. Waiting for that bideo.

    Careful on those amazon flashing lights, inspect them often before fishing. I had the metal rings wear through the metal of the body and lost a fish. I am trolling by motor fast for coho so that probably exacerbates the speed at which they wear through.

    I just wanted to say a belated thank you! I was able to get out and chase some coho at the end of the season. I followed your advice and caught my first keeper coho in the salt from a kayak before being blown off of the water. I also caught quite a few shakers. I am looking forward to starting earlier in the season next year and hopefully catching more. Thanks again.

    Any chance you could show this in the water? I’m set up very similar but not really sure if my brads is spinning to fast

    Big fan of the brads this year as well. I ran mostly the minis but one full size as well. Blackjack and hot pink. SLAY SLAY SLAY.

    Thank you so much for explaining your rig. I was watching Addicted fishing episode about 360 flasher and how they used VIP lock to prevent main line twist but they used it with drop shot not a downrigger. I bought same black jack, following your recomendation, and it seems attracted fish even without tuna, forgot to take it haha, but my 50 lb main braid line had horrable twist and I could not figure out how to prevent it while fishing off downrigger. I have only smaller 360 8 inch pro troll flasher and didnt use little flasher yet. When I watch you fishing it looks so easy to catch a fish...LOL... Thank you again. Me back to learning and trying.

      I always get some twist in my braid. I have three bead chains and still get the twist. It hasn't caused any tangles yet, but I definitely don't love it. Not sure what else could be added to reduce the twist.

    I have a feeling that my rig had a couple of issues, checking this again to re do them. Thanks !!!

      I have noticed that the bite is generally slowing. At least based on my last couple outings. I don't think this is a reflection on the rig used, but just the normal progression of the salmon run. I still have got my limits, but it is taking notably longer.

    Does it matter what color super bait you use? What color do you normally use that is effective? Thanks

    • @nw_angler
      @nw_angler  4 месяца назад +1

      I’m not certain how much it matters. I just try to get as close as possible to their natural food source. In this case, herring. The blackjack color is my favorite.

    Do you ever use a bumper line or a snubber line when trolling for the salmon? Also, do you use a down rigger in your setup? If so, how far down do you usually go? Thanks

    • @nw_angler
      @nw_angler  4 месяца назад +1

      I normally use a bumper from my braid to the flasher of only about 2 feet. Though, very recently I added a 30 foot bumper of 40 lb mono above the flasher (spliced with an FG knot) so that the line will hold better in the downrigger clip.
      I use a 6lb downrigger ball on my kayak with a cannon 2x ratio manual downrigger. The depth varries widely. For coho I'll usually fish the top 60 feet. For chinook it can be anywhere from bouncing the bottom to 50 feet depending on where I am fishing.

      inspect those lights often. I've had the rings wear through the metal of the body on those and lost a fish. replace when you see the metal hole wearing too big.

    That's pretty exactly what I've been using right down to the Amazon flasher. I've had good luck using the mini cut plug when targeting Coho as well.

    Black jack is my go to this season as well, I run 3/0 open eye hooks to a 6 bead chain, and tie what size leaders I want again to another 6 bead chain for quick swaps.

    Thanks for going through your setup! Do you think the mini plugs would be as effective? Please let us know how they work on the river!
    Could you also add a link for those lights?

      My buddy has used the mini plugs with some success. I swear by the superbait though.

    • @nw_angler

      I’m almost always between 2-3 mph. Most frequently about 2.5. What I am really paying attention to though is my downrigger angle. 40-45 degrees.

      Brads superbait in the blackjack color. The larger bead is 10mm. Smaller beads are 5mm.
