    That whole house is literally a time capsule of every Canadian suburban household of people born in the 1930's to 70's and the stuff they inherited. So kids from that house are in their 50's now. So weird, I recognized every single thing you pulled out, every brand name, every trinket I have seen or something similar that my family or the families I grew up with owned. They shopped at Hudson Bay, Sears etc., went to the same movies, played the same games and all frantically bought crappy Christmas presents for each other that went into a drawer and into the box you are now opening. They never threw a single thing out. Incredibly strange to watch the material surroundings of my entire early life unboxed. Even the boxes! We used the same BC apple boxes to keep our Coleman stove and canning jars in. Oh and the house, the basement sauna no one really used....really really bizarre.

      I was born in 1991, so this stuff is like 100% what I would find in my Nana’s attic! This is all super nostalgic to see, especially because it is Canadian and so dang relatable.

    • @jsweevil
      @jsweevil 2 года назад +16

      I don't think this was their stuff. I really feel like these people bought abandoned storage units because there are too many different eras and things that commonly are found in storage units. There is no reason one family would have that many boxes of dresser contents or toys from different times. They clearly bought storage units or acquired house contents by cleaning out houses or managing rental units. Unfortunately unlike Alex, these folks didn't sort through and get rid of anything at all. There is a fine line between buying units and becoming a hoarder yourself.

    • @PK-bh1ww
      @PK-bh1ww 2 года назад +8

      @@jsweevil my sentient too. This stuff looks like it was bought from units or at estate auction and then they'd try to resell it. People can get the mind set to keep too much from a box lot if they think they might be able to make a buck off it. (they figure that buck helps pay for the initial investment) I attended auctions for yrs and have seen estates look like this inventory. And watched people buy multiple box lots of stuff to resell at flea markets.. There was a guy that also attended and sold at flea markets and had a house just to store his stuff in but never lived in the house.

      Im from England, born in the 70s. I find it fascinating because i don't recognise or relate to much in this video because, as you say its very much a Canadian suburban household. I find it bizarre that your houses are so large and with a sauna! that is crazy to me as a Brit, its a stark difference from our small terraced houses, and having to use the toilet in a tin shed outside, a sauna was stuff of fantasy for us. However i can relate to the hoarding of Christmas decorations and some of the toys shown in this video are symbols of my own childhood.

    • @PK-bh1ww
      @PK-bh1ww 2 года назад +11

      I don't think they were actual hoarders I think they went to auctions or bought estates and then re sold at flea markets or had garage sales. The stuff has the look of flea market stuff packed. They might have had only the house to store things in till they sold them. That could be why stuff is sort of organized.

    • @therealJamieJoy
      @therealJamieJoy 2 года назад

      @@PK-bh1ww Hoarding is when the hoard interferes with your life. This is hoarding. They cannot use their home. Almost every room is stacked to the ceiling. Much of what is in the boxes is worthless. The heirs had to hire someone for 20,000 dollars to remove it all. This is a hoard, for sure.

    • @PK-bh1ww
      @PK-bh1ww 2 года назад +2

      @@therealJamieJoy I know what hoarding is. I also know what over buying at auctions looks like. I've been to many and seen what people buy. And I've been to flea markets and conducted them. You'd be surprised what people will buy. This stuff has the look of a reseller over keeping inventory. They probably did keep things they should have parted with long ago.. We don't know if this was their only property.. I knew a guy that stored stuff he got at auctions in a house but never lived in it full time They didn't "have" to hire someone. They "chose" to. (for whatever reason) I've watched from the beginning. This is just my opinion. You're still free to think what you want. .

    • @therealJamieJoy
      @therealJamieJoy 2 года назад

      @@PK-bh1ww You normally can't sell real estate that is filled to the eaves (and whole entire floors unusable, rooms impassable) without removing everything. If it wasn't Alex and his family buying the contents -- the people were throwing it all out without even going through it. Just chucking boxes right out into the dump. Most of the stuff is not really able to be sold. That's why Alex is giving it by the car load to charities. Many types of mental illnesses are defined by how one's life is affected by thoughts or behaviors. If you are filling houses with things you cannot use and can never sell before you grow old and pass away that is affecting your family who must then take care of all of it.

      That can happen so easily. That is why recently I started giving away most of everything I own. All heirlooms already went to my kids, memorabilia and family photos have already been passed down. I had to go through all of my husband's belongings 2 years ago when he died and he was a hoarder. I don't want my kids to have to go through what I went through.

    Empty Boxes: yes, your lucky most of the supplies you need, especially empty boxes, were in that house. For many jobs like this, empty boxes and totes have to be brought to the site every morning. For setting up on-site auctions we’d routinely hit up all the grocery stores in our area for boxes. I especially favored berry flats for loading with hand tools and hardware, since they are 4 to 8” tall. To get big boxes, to make lots of New/old stock packaged bedding/linens, stuffed animals, Tupperware and pots and pans, we’d favor previously used house moving boxes. Art, mirrors and large mid-century wall decor pieces and those Sputnik clicks went into used mirror packs, for transport. All the useD blankets Already on site would be used to wrap/pad furniture, then donated/discarded after.

    Hi Alex, Yes selling heels is difficult, harder to find a fit, while sneakers are easier...but saying going to charity keeps out of landfill...it does help of course but does not guarantee it I'm sure you know. I have a reference from an Australian TV news program: "While donations redirect over 588,000 tonnes of clothing and textiles from landfill per year through reuse and recycling, charities are forced to throw away more than 60,000 tonnes of donations which ultimately end up in landfill". And I have heard if our local Seattle Goodwills get too much inventory at once they send it straight to our BINS where its sold by the pound without even going through it first for their stores. And a lot of that is then sold off in bulk to 3rd world countries or used for rags but sadly most of that does go to the landfill. I think the moral of the story is that there is a LOT of stuff out there and many of us buy too much, more than we can use. And whatever you can do to "recycle" or "reuse" pre-owned items the better. Kudos for helping to save the planet Alex.

    Alex, I love the Easy Bake Oven. I wish I could buy it. My daughter stated the other day that she never got one and I would love to give her a vintage one for Christmas. Thanks for this series.

    Hey Alex! Love your channel! I just wanted to jump in and make you aware that PB 🐰 actually originally published Marilyn’s photos without her consent. I’m in no way telling you what to do or sell, just wanted to let you know since you seemed on the fence about it anyway. Looking forward to the rest of the series! 💜

    15:50 You'd be surprised. It's mostly the color sets that gamers are after. The older black and white portables get attention from collectors as long as they are in good cosmetic condition and the CRT is not dead. It's not hard to find a TV from the mid-late 1980s up, but the older stuff has become pretty difficult to find. Most thrift stores quit taking CRT sets after the transition to DTV and still refuse to take them today.

      Our local landfill takes them and has a building for them. They recycle them and computers. Costs $13 to drop it off. I took a really nice RCA there a few yrs ago. Was kinda sad too see it go. But I had zero use for it.

      Or rarer stuff. It's important to recognize that you cannot get picture-perfect reproduction of a lot of video on an LCD. So if something is built for a CRT, you gotta use a CRT if you care about how it looks.
      And oh goodness, not even checking what calculators it is. There are some expensive calculators from 70's/80's worth keeping an eye out for.

    I'm the one who suggested to keep the TVs for vintage videogames, guilty as charged 🤭 But I assumed you still had a shop, didn't know you had to ship them... yes, shipping CRTs is a pain in the butt and most of the times not worth the effort. P.S. glad you still read the comments, even after the success of your channel!

    • @vanmankennedy

      None of the thrift shops around me will accept TVs of any kind. I would think if you wanted a vintage CRT, you would have no choice but to get it shipped.

    That little tricycle you found belongs to the Mattel doll Tippee Toes, from about 1968 or so! She has blonde curly hair, striped top, and pink tights. Maybe she was in one of the boxes marked "Dolls"? Please go through doll boxes on air!
