  • Improve your vocal stamina with Dr Dan's singing tips. Singing a three-minute song is one thing. But what about singing for a full hour set? Come to think of it, what about singing multiple sets over multiple nights? Your ability to sing for longer periods of time all comes down to your vocal stamina…
Learn more about Vocal Rest - drdan.co/29Poeef
    1:01 Singers are 'Vocal Athletes'
Diet, good sleep, healthy hydration and regular disciplined warm-ups all contribute to the stamina of the athlete and that includes vocal athletes.
1:31 Build Vocal Stamina over time
I always require my students to do a 20-minute practice every second day for the first couple of weeks. Once the voice starts to feel comfortable with that length of time, we increase their practice to 25 minutes. And we keep adding 5 minutes every couple of weeks until the singer is practising for about an hour.
    3:01 Vocal Rest
My last tip for developing vocal stamina, is “know when not to sing.” Your vocal stamina is not infinite. You have a limited vocal budget each day. Building vocal stamina is like growing your budget over time.

I've been performing for almost 8 years now and here's my tip:
    1. vocal warm up helps.
    • if you just wanted to warm up, do a 20-30mins vocal warm up.
    • if you are about to perform 1-2 songs, do a 15min vocal warm up, at least an hour before your performance.
    • if you're about to perform 10-30+ songs, a regular gig (like me) don't talk too much, avoid whispering, and only do a 5min vocal warm up in the shower. take note: water must be hot.
question: why do i think vocal warm up actually helps?
answer: because i used to skeptical. you could say i was born a naturally gifted musician, and singing is my forte. i never believed doing vocal warm ups could help change my singing, but it did.
    2. Don't eat a lot before performing. Don't eat in between sets. You could eat, but don't make yourself feel that you're about to be full. Drink warm water everytime you feel something different in your throat.
    3. Don't be too over confident about your vocal stamina. I used to believe i could perform for straight 6hrs with no break, until i experienced it on an event. My voice started cracking within 3hrs.
In conclusion: Don't accept overly long gig invitations. Your maximum would be 3 sets, at least an hour per set, and 30min breaks in between.
    4. Learn new styles when you have time. Learn vocal runs, perfect falsettos, vocal riffs, etc. Heck, i've even tried to learn mongolian throat singing.
    5. Preserve your voice. Your voice is precious, it could be ruined if you do not take good care of it. There's a reason why 9/10 of popular singers have undergo at least one throat surgeries in their career.
    Take good care of it.
Everything he said on this video is correct and accurate. So, please indulge yourself in watching more of this, and train hard but not too hard.
question: how good stamina is good stamina?
answer: i cannot say how good stamina is, but if you can sing at least 20 songs in one night, then that is enough stamina.
right now, i perform 4 times a week, my only break is wednesday, sundays and mondays, and i perform 40+ songs per night, that's 8pm to 12:30pm. and yes, that is possible. In one point i even performed every night for a whole month.

I sing in a youth chorus called East Coast Sound and we sing barbershop. We don’t get together very often and we only have one rehearsal a month. That rehearsal is 4 HOURS LONG. I always end up completely gone after that, my voice has been completely shot every rehearsal no matter how easy I sing. I can last about 45 minutes to an hour as of right now without feeling in bad voice. This video will definitely help me build that stamina up I think. I NEED it!

Totally Dan. For me, it's a real mental challenge to maintain the discipline to pace yourself vocally when you have to sing night after night and your natural inclination is to belt and wail. I still have to remind myself constantly to economize on gigs, don't skip breaks, and after the show, just avoid talking.

But then I'm 54, so I have to be careful not to mess my voice up. I try to keep well hydrated at all times. I also have asthma so that changes the game a little bit.

Oh boy this is going to be a long journey haha I'm very introvert but I've been assigned to sing main vocals for our band and play guitar, and my vocal stamina is pretty pretty low, I guess one factor is that I'm not talkative or I barely talk enough even at home, like I'll only talk for 12 hours every week. Sometimes I don't talk the entire day because there's nobody to talk to, unless I'm with my partner or at store. I'm saving this vid for my vocal journey, thank you!

    • @DrDanRobinson

I'm glad you found the information helpful! It's completely understandable that adjusting to a new role as a lead vocalist might be a challenge, especially if you're introverted and have yet to use your voice extensively. Remember that building vocal stamina and confidence is a journey that will take time and consistent practice. Here are a few tips to help you along the way:
      1. Regular practice: Set aside dedicated time for vocal practice, including warm-ups, exercises, and singing. Consistent practice will help you build stamina and improve your vocal abilities.
      2. Vocal exercises: Work on targeted exercises to build your vocal strength and endurance. Consider working with a vocal coach who can guide you through exercises tailored to your specific needs and goals.
      3. Engage in conversation: Find opportunities to talk more during the day, even if it's just casual conversation with friends, family, or your partner. This can help you become more comfortable using your voice and improve your vocal stamina.
      4. Gradual exposure: Ease into your new role by participating in low-pressure singing situations, like informal jam sessions with your band or open mic nights. This can help you build your confidence and become more comfortable on stage.
      5. Warm-up and cool-down: Just like any physical activity, it's essential to warm up your voice before singing and cool down afterwards. This can help prevent strain and injury while promoting vocal health.
      6. Mindset: Remember that your role as a lead vocalist is a learning process, and it's okay to make mistakes. Be patient with yourself, and focus on your progress rather than aiming for perfection.
      7. Support: Surround yourself with supportive people who can encourage you and provide constructive feedback. Your bandmates, vocal coach, and friends can be invaluable sources of support and motivation.
Remember to enjoy the process, and don't be too hard on yourself. Embrace the opportunity to grow as a vocalist and musician, and most importantly, have fun with it!

Hi Dan! I am trying to strengthen my upper register and when I am finished I feel slightly fatigued vocally. I have been singing for a long time, but I do end up spending 2 hours singing some times and that's when I get tired. Am I pushing myself too much during practice? I get worried because I have been told in the past that your voice should never be tired but that doesn't seem to make much sense to me as I don't believe that anyone can just sing indefinitely. Do all singers get tired if they push themselves for 2+ hours or can singers with proper technique sing without ever getting tired?

This advice was extremely helpful to me! I just finished band rehearsal and noticed that I just flat out “run out of steam” after a few songs - and this seems to happen at every rehearsal and every show. It’s been super frustrating to say the least.
The marathon runner analogy really hit hard! I typically do a warm up earlier in the day and then vocalize on my way to rehearsals and or shows.
When would you suggest warming up beforehand so that I can save my voice?
Thank you SO much for all your content!

There is no reason to ask me why, or have roundabout useless discussions. I am very straight up, direct, I just want to know how to improve and be the best I can, and get gigs and make money and totally totally maximize my music abilities. Just the necessary facts. Unfortunately I can not afford to pay anyone for any lessons. That is just how it is.

Damn i end up watching tips for singers because my vocal chords are fatigued after a little more intensive and a bit more noisy conversation than i am used to every time after like 7-15 minutes.
If i ever decide to start singing i guess it will be a lot of pain in my throat from the beginning if i wont know when to shut up.

There should never be any pain.

      No pain
      Just voice getting weaker.
Maybe i dont exactly understand what fatigue of vocal chords actually mean
