- Ok, I'm back. Sort of. It's a long story.
For 2018, I have a new series I'm starting to help answer some of the many many questions I get. The goal is to help YOU learn from my mistakes, experience, etc. etc.
For this first episode of Five Minute Friday, we not only miss our deadline of FRIDAY, we go WAY over our 5 minutes. BUT, we talk about why my first three mods to my 5th gen Toyota 4Runner were all-terrain tires, an OME lift and a flat aluminum roof rack from Eezi Awn.
Hope you enjoy!

Skip to 5:32 if to want to see the TIRES. Skip to 12:01 is you want to see the SHOCKS he chose. Skip to 16:00 to see the TOP RACK he uses. You can save 17 minutes of your life!
Spot on.. guy jus talks and talks.. exhausting.
Thanks
Lol
Mujahid Rasheed yeah he’s a smart guy, but I think most people want to just get to the gist
Thank you!
Five minute Friday, 21 min video, perfect.
Yea, great way to kick off something new - totally DON'T do what I say I'm doing. . haha
There are professional overland channels, and then there is this channel. I love the fact that you basically started out having no idea what you are doing. Watching the learning process you have been going through has been great. Keep making more videos!
Chris Lyons Nail on the head! Exactly my thoughts too. The learning process and the "I'm not afraid to admit I'm wrong, AND I'm gonna find out why" quality is priceless. The main reason I'm a subscriber here.
Kinda loses its flair in those aspects when u watch the factory backed pro overland channels. Don't get me wrong, I love watching them and their dedication to organization, but THIS is where everyone starts sometime. 99.9% of us don't have Toyota flowing us stuff
Wow, thank you!! I plan to step up the level of my cinematography quality this year, but will absolutely still be keeping it loose and real.
Thank you as well! Hey, I love the Exp Overland guys, their quality is top notch, what they're doing drives me to dream big and enhances my desire for adventure. BUT, what they're doing is NOT what I want to be doing, in terms of production. It's too polished for my style, too corporate - not that there's anything wrong with that, just not what I want to do.
These comments and your responses are the heart of what makes your VLOG special. I think experienced and inexperienced alike find it entertaining. Either way, we have all been there at some time. You have fantastic editing and a unique "voice". Keep up the good work. (I must admit, I really do hope you get out to Utah. I look forward to seeing YOU in Utah. I'm planning on Fins N Things & Hell's Revenge thanks to your videos).
Some notes from this video.
1- BFG KO2 AT 285/70/17 in a 3" lift. They rubbed and fixed with the fender liner mod front and rear.
2- OME nitro charged 3" lift ??. Medium rear coils and heavy-duty front coils. Issues with alignment. Upper control arms not replaced.
3- Roof rack: Aluminum K9 Eezi Awn 2.2 meters. No drilling is needed. Not many accessories for this roof rack.
Watching your kids break ice, reminded me of that scene in the movie Office Space where they are beating down the Copy Machine haha.
Hahaha. yes!!
We just bought our first 4 runner today. Thank you for all the help
1. 285/70/17 KO2’s
2. ARB OME 3” lift
3. Eezi Awn rack
I just bought a 2017 TRD Off Road and am in the same boat you talk about being in with no idea. I've had cars my whole life and knew I wanted something to play off road in, finally decided on the 4Runner, and now don't know what to do. Thanks for giving me many ideas to think about and think through, your vids have been super helpful (I've watched a bunch of them now). Keep the vids up, because if nothing else you're showing me places that I HAVE to see now (like Canyonlands).
Jason your channel is one of my favorite channels out there. I think your channel and iamjake are of the best real tv style overland channels that will just keep growing in followers. Keep going with this great content, love it!!!
I absolutely love the fact that you were showing your learning process. You have a nice style and are giving confidence with the mods I am about to start doing on my truck. I'm just seeing this video in 2021 so I'm looking forward to seeing how your channel and vehicles have grown.
I plan to get a tacoma and do slight mods to it as I get money. Watching videos like these really help me make my decisions.
Stay away from 3rd gen Tacoma. I had one for a year. Stay away from them. Buy a 5th gen 4Runner. Just my opinion. Take my advice and then do what you want. Do it right. cry once
watching your vids has made me go from saving for a jeep to saving for a 4Runner trail. same mpg but more comfy it seems.
Good choice , you’re going to love your 4Runner
Went on forums, came out with KO2's...seems about right lol
I highly recommend the Frontrunner roof racks and products. Super high quality and lots of accessories. Glad to see you’re back.
This is like, "Bill Nye the Science Guy" does overlanding! Awesome! :D
Those trees were absolutely beautiful all iced over like they were. A rare thing of beauty. And then, enter Kidzillas.
If I only had six months to live I’d subscribe. That way it would seem like ten years.
I️ have an ‘05 4Runner and have multiple friends that run SPC upper control arms like I️ do. I️ liked them because I️ had found that the icon Uniballs would collect dust and have gone out and had to replace the bushings. Though any upper control arm could go out, I️ have, along with my off-road friends, that SPC’s Uppers are super durable and strong as can be. Hope this helps!
appreciate your candor in these videos!
20 minute Friday sounds better to me!
I will tell you I have been super happy with my Front Runner full length. Finish is holding up well and you are spot on for the accessories. Also the strength of the aluminum is night and day different from the K9. So much stronger. I actually saw a K9 rack where the awning accessory ripped the aluminum channel open when the wind caught the awning. Talk to Broken Spoke about that.
It took him 3 minutes to tell us that he can't tell us anything... lol
First of all, YOU HAVE A BLOG??? I've been a subscriber since vlog 4 or 5. This is news to me.
I've got the same exact tires. Will be doing a similar lift soon. Probably will do the fender mod before that. And I have a 4Runner for the same reason. Its a daily driver and 99.9% of its miles are on pavement.
Great video. Looking forward to more "21 minute Friday" content...
Haha. It's very lightly promoted on my instagram. Not much to see there, I wish I put more time in it. I have a detailed write up on how I did it on t4r.org - just search for my username, jasonkoko, look for the 285's on a 4runner fender liner mod post...
Why get a lift or off-road tires if it is on pavement 99.9% of the time? What are you trying to prove and to whom?
JussaIrish not trying to prove anything to anyone, especially to a troll like yourself. Did it ever dawn on your troll brain that maybe I’d like to spend more time on the dirt roads than I currently do now? So why don’t you STFU now and do something productive with your life?
Fantastic video. I will definitely be referring back to this when I purchase a 4runner sometime in the relatively near future
Thanks for this video. Definitely cleared up alot of questions I've been have running through my brain. Keep'em coming
Wow. That ice formation in the trees is so cool. And the sound! It’s like plates breaking
“Five Minute Friday”
Not on Friday
21 minutes
I’m loving it already, subbed!
Love your videos! I recently purchased a 17 Rubicon Unlimited and started exploring local trails in SoCal. I have wheeled it stock for 6 months now not knowing if I wanted a Rock Crawler or a Overland Rig. After watching your videos and others, I have decided to go the overland route with my jeep. I am going to start my build tomorrow with installing a sPOD system for lighting and accessories.
Robert Earles we have same color rigs! Welcome to the Jeep family!
You know you don’t really need to choose or label yourself an ‘overlander’ or a ‘rock crawler’
Look at some of the jkx, ultimate adventure, or wayalife videos. Those guys do the hardest trails in the country, camping out of their rigs for weeks at a time. Just mod based on what’s relevant to what you want to do. You can run big axles, and 40s with a rooftop tent and an ARB fridge.
I have a 2 door jkr on 37x14.5 tires that I daily drive, take on long drives, and camp out of.
nice buy on the rig. question, have you been worried about messing up the body of such a new vehicle out on the trails? I'm always worried about it in my 90s trucks haha
I have had a few scratches but they always buff out with wax. Im looking at purchasing some magnetic armor that will prevent a lot of the scratches.
Robert Earles that's a good idea there!
Your videos are great don't leave us hanging to long
You might want to consider adjustable coil-overs from Toytech, that way you can adjust the front ride height just where you want it, and be able to compensate for sag any time in minutes with the included wrench with the setup. Upper control arms mostly will allow you to gain more caster when you lift the front. If your vehicle feels like it wanders a lot going down the highway then UCA's would be a good idea, but if it feels fine to you, you can live fine without it. UCA's can also help with clearance issues because it can move the position of the wheel in the wheel well a bit...
Super helpful - thank you!!
Thanks Adrian Wevers-good info!
Some thing else I should add about UCA, is they also can improve the articulation of the front suspension. UCAs come with uniballs or repositioned ball joints that can allow a greater range of motion which can allow the suspension to droop further.
Been pondering getting a 4Runner for a while. With your great videos and advice, I might just take the leap!! So glad I found your channel👊🏽. I am into mountain biking 🚵🏽 and camping a bit ⛺️. A little concerned to go from a Tahoe to 4Runner since I am used to lots of space. I do need better clearance out on the roads when going off pavement. I will be hitting you up for advice👍🏽
Do it! Love mine!

Love mine.had a 2018 Tacoma brand new. For one year. Got rid of it. Did not care for it. Would not recommend 3rd gen Tacoma. 4runner all the way 5th gen for life
thanks for all the info, it's very useful specially for someone like me that new to the scene
Great video! Thanks for the walk around and the information you give !
UCAs gives u more travel and more caster for lifts. You'll also get some lift from it as well. 0"-2" lifts they are not needed but 2+" lift it's recommended.
Bill Nye the science guy is into Four Wheel'n ? ! :o
I actually just read your t4r post this am. Great post and great video. Very helpful for the new guy
:-) those are the first 3 things I did to my 4Runner. BTW, sorry your not in my neck of the woods/deserts/plains yet. great vlog.
I have 2 questions..
1- how far does the factory lug bolts go thru the spacers? I see other brands that only gets 3 or 4 turns on the nut.
2- your roof rack has a solar panel. Will you make a 5 minute Friday about this and how you ran the wiring?
Keep the vids coming. I enjoy them.
Great video. Thank you for sharing this. Really enjoyed the clip. As a brand new happy as can be owner myself, your intel is sound. Keep up the great work.
I just found your channel I'm looking at alot of your videos really Easy to watch and informative
Very cool video. Your editing is good and I like your demeanor and way of bringing your ideas forth. Subscribed🖒
Quick question about your spacers, did you notice any minor vibrations or any change at all when going 60-80 mph on the highway after installing those spacers? I have read many places that people have felt a change, and many have not. I am not sure what to think but all of your content has steered me in the right direction so far. I’d love your opinion!
47 degrees here in Canada, so you could be in Salt Lake with 22 F lol, wait till Spring!
Would enjoy absorbing information with you the next time you are in Central FL.
It would be great to have a buyer's guide to used 4Runners... as in which models to seek and which to avoid.
As always nice video. The BFGoodrich tires are the right choice. I went with the KM2s and love them!
Yay you're not gone! Lol 🐸
Just an FYI, the K9 rails now come pre-bent, or at least mine did a few months ago.
Jason... We miss you!
I have a Tacoma set up very similar to your 4Runner. I don’t know if you have looked into prinsu roof racks “ now cbi “ but I have been very happy with mine. None of the finish issues you seem to have have and I’m a Floridian as well.
bro in Australia we live by the Land Cruiser
Hey Jason, I’m rewatching this on Nov 2, 2021 since I bought a 2022 TRD Off Road Premium with the KDSS and MTM. I will be reviewing all your 4Runner videos.
How do you like being back in Florida?
My first three mods were Tint, Sliders & Amber Baja SAE fogs before my T4R had 90 miles. It wasn’t even a week old..
to trim the bumper cover i happened to have a sharp new set of hedge trimmers, the one that look like huge scissors. i made one straight and clean cut and was done with it. took longer to get it out of the package and it was so clean of a cut you cant even tell i did cut it. funny huh.
Congrats on 1 million views!!!
Ben Northcutt Bohmert oh wow! I wasn’t even paying attention to that!! Think RUclips will send me an aluminum or wooden play button??
Jason Koertge hopefully you get something for all the hard work. Keep up the great videos!
KO2 are good. I wanted something with some better lugs on them for the mud and sand here in FL. I went with Goodyear Wranglers. They self clean much better than the KO2 but both are great :)
Ryan Martinage The wet traction is my only complaint.
With 285 and a lift, I dont go fast anyways xD
Great Video! I am slowly building my 14 Nissan Xterra pro4x for the same purpose! I was lucky with the Xterra when I added 33's I had no rubbing with stock suspension just had to melt a small liner piece :)
Never heard of what your'e talking about with a the heater core failing causing the engine and trans to fail that doesn't even make sense. Nissan had an issue from 05 to 09 where the radiator on the automatics would cause coolant to get into the trans causing the trans to fail but that has been fixed with a recall. 2010 ^ Xterras are rock solid. I owned a 06 toyota trd tacoma before my X and the frame and cab rusted out at 70k and it was only 5 years old so I wont be buying another toyota anytime soon.
Sounds like you had the radiator failed due recall from 05-09 but your story also sounds a little off to me. I prefer the quality of a Nissan over a Toyota but that's just a personal opinions and not a facts. I've owned 5 toyotas and use to be toyota journeyman tech for 5 years and after working on them and seeing them day in day out I now prefer to drive Nissan trucks. I feel like the quality of Toyota in recent years just keep declining from my experience with the brand.
I’ve had Tacomas and Frontiers and I must say my Frontier felt rock solid where as my Tacomas felt more light duty. Those Pro4x’s are sweet. Plus I sold my Nismo Frontier with well over 100k. miles and never had a problem.
Well thats because the Frontier/Xterra have a fully boxed frame that is shared with the full size Titan. The Tacoma/4Runner have a flexible C channel frame.
Scott W. That’s right Scott W. Toyota 4R unibody, Nissan Xterra = ladder truck frame. (I think same as the Nissan Frontier )
I run Toyo Open Country AT2 they do great. I'm in New England
Kindly explain why you did not simply use a LEVEL when installing the roof rack?
Because if the vehicle isn’t on level ground, if the vehicle isn’t level on the ground... you don’t necessarily want the rack level with gravity, you want it level with the truck
Very helpful video! Thanks!
Hey Jason, do you think you’ll do an update video on the components that you’ve install on your truck? Wheel spacers, suspension, winch.. etc?
Yep. Once I get through this trip, I've got that planned.
What are you thoughts about the Rhino Rack ?
There is something that I want to know about. I know it has been asked before. It's about how you turn your neck. What happened to your neck?
I don’t yet know if you reply to your subscribers but I’m very much liking your cinematography and am about to start my own RUclips channel. Just wondering what kind of action cam do you use and what editing software? I have Apple Mac and I’m also thinking of getting a GoPro hero (2018). It’s the current budget model. Is that ok so you think or do you think there is better? Again, loving your videos and the style. Real down to earth. Looking forward to watching more of your vids.
KO2’s are great tires but a tad expensive for my size. The Toyo A/T 2 is $50 a tire cheaper and the Falken Wild Country is $80 a tire cheaper. Not sure you can quantify the benefit of the BFG beating that spread.
Jason, did you do a speedometer calibration when you installed the BFG KO2s? I assume these are larger diameter than the previous (stock?) tires you had? I can't recall you discussing this on previous videos but would be interested in your experience with this. I enjoy your videos...keep them coming!
Love the 5 gen looks. But I still like my 4 gen better with the v8.
New intro is rad. You're up to 602+ on twitter now (@thedaddybadger). Loved the winter wonderland. :)
I love this idea... thanks a lot...
Good stuff!
Hi Jason, love your rig and vlogs! Question: What’s the torque spec for the spacer to the truck and what’s the torque from wheel to the spacer? I’m planning to get a spacer this month
Nice video-making style and content, man. I've subscribed.
Thank you Spencer!!
I went OME. Again its just proven. Bilstein 5100’s are cheaper also and more common.
Somebody tell me what’s the mods? I ain’t get much time left in me.
I'm starting to look at that SSO roof rack it just came out....
When you installed you suspension, did you install the driver side trim packer? Did you change your front spring to medium? How did that go? With bumper and winch, should not be better the heavy for the front? Did you relocate the sway bar? Thanks!
Holy Adderall!! Slow down the avalanche.
Almost spinning.
what happen to the 5 mins...
Cool video! What trail you recommend for beginners and 2wd at ocala naitonal park. Just got my bfg ko2
Dude has a hand gesture for every word in the dictionary lol
Which accessories do you think is lacking from the K9 line? looking though what both have to offer it looks like K9 doesn't have a propane tank and a dutch oven mount.
Nice video ? Is the Sprint booster is its worth it or not saw your video on it and they have a other one call pedal commander as you know and does it mess up the engine or transmission let me know thanks
Awesome 4Runner! My father just purchased one. It looks like you got the TRD Off Road 5 Passenger? I notice in another one of your videos you have a Toyota Heritage Grille, which in Canada you can only get if you purchase a TRD Pro model. Where did you get your grille?
Geordie Hock eBay, Amazon
Please talk about the LED scroll bar on your desk lol! What is it?
Hey Jason, have you change your transmission oil yet? If so what is the best way to get this done? Thanks!
How much lift and tire size thanks?
Hey Jason,
Are your wheels the stock 17 x 7.5? Did you end up having to run spacers?
Thank you for your time.
I'm in Baltimore Maryland it's 7゚ 36 would be hot lol love your vlogs. It would be awsome,if you could do a trip with, expedition overland, I would donate 200$ if u did.
I stumbled on to your videos. First one was the I think I ruined my tent! I’ve watched them all and glad your going to keep posting. Can’t wait for you to get to Utah and make videos out there. Thanks for all the info. It helps.
I also would like to know what the storage box on top is, please.
Like your jacket. What brand or can you provide a link?
Good looking runner. I know my wife loves her's. Off the wall question, what is the green jacket you are wearing?
Your making great informative videos
6:43?!??! Anyone else see that guy in the far right almost fall in the background?!?
I DO remember that CLICK BAIT Jason
I have a 16 trail and wanted to put larger tires on it back in 2016 when I first got it.I searched around the web for information on how this would effect things like Speedo reading and everything related to all the traction controls that read off of wheel speed.I found very little information at the time.I ended up buying the black trd rims and stayed with the same sized tires but a little more aggressive like the trd fourrunner.
Long way around a quick question... How did you deal with this after going to the 285 tire?
Thanks
Did you do any undercoating for your undercarriage? I'm really scared of rust because Florida is basically a big sand pit with salt everywhere.
Did you have any issues with the spider Trax other than over-torqued bolts? I heard it wasn't advisable to use them if the vehicle is a daily driver.
when you mentioned you have to put wheel spacer on, is it to prevent a Body Mount Cut?
The truck is a sr5 or trd OR ??
Hey, just a thought. I love BFG AT due to mileage and they are wicked in sand and on trails/snow. But they absolutely SUCK in straight mud and are expensive. Check out TireRecappers.com New process for the old "recaps", wayyyy more reliable, great cost, free shipping, and a BFG Mud Terrain pattern. You can get a set of 235-75-15's 300.00 for a set shipped. and their mileage seems to be better than normal new manufactured tired. I hope it helps in some way. Ive subscribed, and really liking the vids man. Good Job.
*Also, its aligns, but you need aftermarket caster/camber plates when you start lifting IFS. Couple other things, but that the most important.
