Rhythm Roulette: Sporting Life

  • After a short break, we’re back with another episode of Rhythm Roulette, this time Mass Appeal presenting Sporting Life. Sport switched up the flow of things, sampling from three cassette tapes instead of going for vinyl records. Needless to say, the results are ill. After finding a tiny part of a sample on an unidentifiable tape, Sport created a drum loop that channels the vibes of the late Koopsta Knicca’s music. From there, he layered drums into the beat and his own vocals drops, shouting out Wiki of Ratking, who makes an appearance in the episode as well.
    Watch Sporting Life create gold out of old-ass cassette tapes in the player above.

    For those who dont know, the main melodic singing sample Sport used is from a song called "The Wound of History" (although the cassette may be covered as English version), which is a song originally recorded in May 1989, and by over over 100 artists in Taiwan to support Tiananmen Square Protest, and it has become a banned song by China government.

    This guy's creativity and workflow is the effortlessly unique. Who else uses cassettes (intentionally in a different language and scales nonetheless!), stage drum pads, a random Roland controller that took me 10 minutes to find on their site, and a leap motion controller to mute tracks. 💯

      EntropicSpore Roland spd-sx drum pad to play samples. Focusrite Scarlet interface to record audio into computer. Cassette player, audio sent into interface to record samples. Roland mx1 mix performer, for mixing/playback and control over daw.

    • @ettchicago
      @ettchicago 7 лет назад +5

      Johnny Farr yea man it's definitely a different way to do things. Pretty unessicary these days too. I use an old tascam 4 track to create beat loops by cutting and splicing the tape, as well as using weird tapes for sample source too. With a sample trigger, live instrument over dubs, and records and tapes for sample source, all run threw ol free audacity is enough to make music. All that shit minus the computer is like 150-220 bucks lol. I got a couple videos showing what I mean on my channel. I totally think it's good to experiment and do what ever you can to make music you love. Even on a tight budget

    The whole point of this series is that its REAL. The REAL beat making process, using their REAL equipment, in their REAL working environment, at their REAL PACE. Everything about the Sprite sponsorship CONTRADICTED THAT. I understand you gotta pay the bills, so if you do have to it again, just put up some Fatheads of the Sponsor's Logo in the producer's room or hang up some logo'd tarps or some shit.

    • @KidCooties
      @KidCooties 8 лет назад +7

      +1blackone I agree bro. I would even tolerate ADS in the middle of these webisodes.. 30 seconds of a Sprite ad for example. I think the participants (producers) HAVE to be in their own work environment to keep RR authentic...just how it was since its inception.

    • @Mucksauce
      @Mucksauce 8 лет назад +3

      +1blackone I disagree for multiple reasons. First off, Sprite is the sh*t. If you don't like Sprite something is wrong with you. Second, you gotta look at the heads they got on with those Sprite Spots. Mannie Fresh, Just Blaze and Georgia Anne Muldrow. It would be different if they got some new jacks but those three been in the game since been in the game nawmean. I had no idea Georgia existed until that spot. She is fire and deserves much more recognition than she gets and MP plus Sprite gave her that. Also it does not matter what you use it matter what it sounds like. So many people get caught up on that. Tryin to talk about inception like you was in the room when it happened or some sh*t. Mass Appeal is dope. Sprite is dope. Stop being a hipster.

    • @1blackone
      @1blackone 8 лет назад +4

      Ian Quarles
      LOL holy shit, do you honestly think we can't tell you're a shill? Using slang all half-right and shit "look at the heads" "they got some new jacks" "nawmean"(?) Soo fucking forced its sad, no actual person fucking talks like that. Im not your supervisor, but I DEFINATELY wouldn't give you your check this week, you 40 year old man pretending to be "down with the coolio trends, bro-bro!" or however you think it would be said...

      Ian Quarles
      All of what we are talking about-both you and I-are opinions, not facts or "knowledge". I think yours are paid-for opinions. So to me, you are a shill tryna put a spin on the narrative, probably because Mass Appeal had already recorded Sprite bullshit and they don't wanna lose thier audience when they have to post it to receive thier funding. I simply can't see you as anything else, so we're done.

      +kodiak wild do you know how I would sample tapes and record them into my DAW? I know I'd need a tape player, but I'm not sure what cables I would need. I have a Audio Interface.

    • @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power
      @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power 8 лет назад

      i used to do it with a double cassette player, but to do it digitally, if the player has a headphone jack, just use a 3.5 ( or 1/8" ) cable to 1/4 & plug it straight in. or, if you get a mini stereo with a tape player, probably something like rca, to rca/1/4" adaptor cable & run it into your interface. you'll most likely get your cassette signal from a headphone jack, but if the tape player doesn't have that for some reason, you can mic the speaker. also, if the audio interface has an xlr input, same thing, just xlr end instead of 1/4". you can get all these cables on amazon, or radio shack, if they're still in your area.
