John great video.....I'm an older guy 62 yr old guitar nut still.i cringe when I see this 69 as I had a 3 tone back in day and was my old favorite. But everyone here has a story about if I had only held on to that guitar.Sometimes the instruments we had were the best just were young and didn't understand how great they were.Like in the early eighties with those Kramer guitars pointy sharp ended guitars now we come full circle back to black guard teles.....60's strats.....and of course a good les Paul......amazing how right these instruments are and stood test of time....
I´m watching the whole playlist. So great every song!
The Supro had something special.
i knew, that when i scrolled down, i would see this comment. I was just looking at this beautiful amp right next to him, begging for him to plug her in.
Thats the number 1 for me!
Absolutely
Johan !! Steve in North Dakota, you're the best I've seen at this kind of thing...I'm hooked on your vids now. I'm 65 and still teaching and recording and collecting so, it all helps !! Keep it up sir, well done !!
+Steve Kuykendall Thanks Steve, great to hear that! Cheers Johan

Fender Bassbreaker... Impressive. Johan, please never stop these videos. All tone chasers should be watching your stuff regularly.
I was trying not to look, just to go off sound alone. Every time the Supro got played I just had to look to see what it was! Sounds amazing! Great vid.
+Ben Hillier Thanks man :-)
I really love your videos. Great side by sides with all of them. It gives you s great idea on how amps differ from one another or sometimes how cheaper amps can almost sound as good or sometimes better than the expensive ones. Great job!!
+anthony turco Thanks, I'm really glad to hear that. Cheers
awesome video and wonderful playing. fender, supro, vox. super editing. VERY well done.
my internet is not fadt enough but i am going to make it thru all ur vids to give a thumbs up some every day cuz man ur the best out there for experiments and tone knowledge
+Tone Fingerz Thanks, I appreciate it man! :-)
Great video! Like how wall of amps kept switching around 😎
Liked the Supro and Orange the best
+Astropearl Thanks, glad to hear it!
Was able to choose and buy a Supro Black Magick reverb because of this vid. Have had it for moths now, and it continues to sounds amazing! Thanks Johan & Simon :-) I'd wish there were more comparisons like this.
Lots of niceness here. I like the Vox, Marshall, Supro and the rythm sound of 3Monkeys but most of the other ones are quite good sounding too. Nice playing by the way!
+NPGANDERSSON Thanks!
12 combo bananzas rock ! I want a Supro really bad now ! The underdog Bugera held its own. Thanks Johan ! : )
+Mitchell Ferre Thanks man, yeah the Bugera felt great
Your videos always bring a smile to my face.....
+Douglas Attebury :-) Glad to heat it!
You guys, that drums track is INCREDIBLE!!!! Keep up the good work!
I favor the Supro, Koch, and Orange in that order. Honorable mention to Fender and Marshall.
The Fender is a very good surprise. I love it. Cheap also which is always good. They did very well to my ears.
+byebyebeano Thanks! The Fender is a real hit!
Some amps sound like outliers like the Z. Others cluster closer together in terms of sound characteristics. The Vox has a peak in the upper mids that sounds really sharp especially with the strat. Interesting results.
+slovokia Thanks
bugera sounds very Vox like and for the price Wow! I think Rory Gallagher would be impressed .. lol
Same tubes in the v22 and a similar tone stack, the fender bassbreaker is basically a VOX AC15 with an extra gain stage and no tremolo.
Bugera and Supro for rhytm. Peavey and Dr.Z for solos! Great video!
+André Carvalho Thanks man!
You make the best comparison videos ever!
+kdrake777 Thanks, so good to hear that. Cheers Johan
Fender Bassbreaker...
It's really really cool for a new Fender product's, especially at that price!
I've been playing those Bassbreakers every time I go into guitar center. Gotta say, I love them to bits. I just don't have room for another amp in my life at the moment.
great playing mate, if it's you the one who plays all of them are awesome!
+Daniel martinez moreno Thanks!
What an excellent Stratocaster. It sounds extra stratocastery.
+jess d ;-) Cheers
A major part of the sound difference was the speakers. If you had played every amp through the same cab, there would not have been as much difference. I hate to admit it but the Peavy sounded the best for rhythm and lead. I loved the Orange for lead and Koch for rhythm.
+kdrake777 yeah, the speakers are the most important part in the sound chain. The Peavey didn't have the stock speaker but a G12H-75 Creamback like the Marshall.
Love your fantastic videos, Johan!
Most of your videos demonstrate high gain amps... I'd love to see a comparison of 'clean' amps turned up loud if this is possible - and if you could include a Brunetti SIngleman, it would be perfect!
I'd like to hear power tube saturation rather than preamp gain.
+Alex McGregor Thanks, we can do that. Usually the amps are played flat out so it's preamp-, PI- and Power amp distortion
Johan Segeborn thank you! In a 'clean amp' turned up to 10, is there any way to tell how much the preamp and power tubes are contributing to the tone?
Very surprised by the Fender. To my ears the Marshall sounded the most competent and natural at its maxed volume. It didn't seem to struggle at all.
+asc95 Thanks! The Marshall had the most spatially rich tone
Fantastic reviews. Favourites; Marshall and bass breaker. I am suprisef how good the Bugera sounds against more expensive amps
+Vinnie Monte-Irvine Thanks Vinnie! Yeah I actually liked the Bugera too
my favorite was the Marshall Astoria.
+Bums Harvest Thanks
Again I prefer the Bassbreaker, I hear a fatness none of the others seem to have. It'll be interesting to hear how a tele sounds through it. Thanks Johan for making these comparison videos 👍
+Ernesto Del Baño Thanks Ernesto!
Amazing how the low powered Strat pickups completely changed my opinion on the amps. With the Les Paul I thought the AD30 was fizzy in the bad way, with the stratocaster it was very good! Bugera was way better with the Strat and it sounded good with the Les Paul, but Strat sounded better. Supro still is a killer tone but it wasn't my favorite this time. Koch to my ears sounded the best with the Strat. I liked the Bassbreaker but was hoping for a little more oomph, a clean boost would really help that amp into rock mode. Blues Cube continues to make me think I should get one. For the money it's hard to beat.
+Arnold Deal Thanks, great feedback. Single coil vs Humbucker really throws it all up in the air!
yeah i think the bugeras (even v55 i think) sounds miles better than with humbuckers.
i had V55 with epiphone classic 57 humbucker. it sucked , lifeless tone.
The Bugera V22 held it's own. Nice surprise.
Thanks!
Favorite Lead Tones:
1) Fender -- Very thick but maintained headroom.
2) Marshall -- Nice and smooth.
3) BluesCube -- Came in very clear! Impressed.
Favorite Rhythm Tones:
1) ENGL -- Very balanced, not overly distorted, compressed, or harsh.
2) BluesCube -- Had a very nice low-end ideal for lead guitar to blend.
3) 3Monkeys -- Nice grit and tube distortion.
Least Favorites:
1) Koch -- Way too distorted.
2) Supro -- Lots of 3k going on that was unpleasant! With tone knob rolled back I can imagine it sounding killer!
3) VOX -- Very thin! What was going on with that one? Sounded like the Top Boost was dimed.
+Gordon Tubbs Thanks! Great feedback. They were all dimed. We used the top boost channel on the Vox, with all EQ on 5. Cheers
Just goes to show the difference between dimed and the sweet spot!
+Gordon Tubbs Yeah far from all amps sound their best at full volume
A little weird but I was on lunch and I saw a guy that looked just like you. hahaha. Killer tones by the way!
+brntgrbl hahaha! Poor guy :-) Cheers
I wish we could get one of these amp shootouts for a guitar with P-90s at some point.
You make me miss my Bugera :( Such a great amp for price.
+JusAequum I thought the Bugera was as good as the others on the clean channel. On the high gain channel it was Aeons behind the others though. But cranked the clean channel has the gain needed for classic rock. Cheers

Ha, think i'll take the blues cube :-O
+Gatpig it will fit in ANY mix. Great amp :-)
nice intro with the lightning!! The astoria sounds better with the strat than with the Les Paul. My favorite are the frequencies from planet Supro... looking forward for the Tele test!
+Glen Herman Thanks Glen!
you have really cool ideas for showing off amps thanks.
+Mark B Glad you like it!
That has to be painful. A while ago I bumped my volume to around max with my knee but I didn't notice it until after switching from standy and strumming a chord. Had a ringing left ear for two days and killed my reverb tank.
+Nightingale1887 Yeah with the 50 and 100 w amps it's good to sit behind the amp :-)
ENGL E320 so yeah not doing that again :)
(surprised at the tone of the ENGL btw)
+Nightingale1887 me too, didn't expect that rich mid
Some interesting Harmonics on the blues cubes lead sound but very impressed with its tone otherwise. I'd be interested to know what kind of tone stack or eq the drZ has as it has a curious hollowness to it. Not a criticism, but I thought the same on the last video. The idea of a supro keeps growing on me every time you feature them. Great playing from the man again... He finds the in-between notes in a very stylish way. Hope you're well mate
+PoJoWo Hi! Yeah I expected more from the DrZ, so I'll give ot another video later on. Hope you're well to my friend. Cheers
I love the Supro Black Magik! It's perfect for my '76 strat!
Well yes. It will be my next purchase!
Now with Simon and the strat I think I like the Supro the most, it stands out and have a very articulate midrange. One can also hear that the Koch and Vox have an extended low end that produces some not-so-musical artifacts.
Simons playing reminds me of Laurie Wisefield (Wishbone Ash, Tina Turner, Snakecharmer), me like!
+Mats Frånlund cool! Great feedback as always
The Fender and Marshall really show why they are the sound everyone wants. Out of the two if I had to choose I like the Marshall breakup better but the Fender has such a huge sound so...coin flip. Honorable mentions: Orange, Supro, ENGL. The Monkey sounded almost as if it had a built in fuzz circuit which sounded cool but I'm sure that would get old and would suck with pedals. *All opinions are my own and are worth as such.
great post - Strats dont lie !
+Eddie George Thanks Eddie! They sure don't. The most articulate but unforgiving guitar
The Supro was best by far, followed by Koch and Engl. The Bugera and Peavey were suprisingly decent. The Orange sounded good for a particular tone. Vox was not bad either. Awesome vid.
Excellent job! Thank you!
+Beppe Di Salvo Thanks Beppe!
I just love this strat sound! Are these the original pickups ?
Once again my top 3 are Supro, Peavey and Fender albeit in a little different order this time. I think the Peavey edges out the Fender for second. Now once price is considered the Fender still gets the nod :). When this is all over I hope you both as guitar players tell which amp you felt was most inspiring to play through. It's all great to talk about tone, but it's really the players interaction with the gear that makes the magic right?
+ArielsSmartyPants Yeah, the different amps makes you play differently. Cheers
I like the Marshall Astoria then the bassbreaker then the supro. galaxies z was good too
I'm really surprised by my #1 choice

It's not a Bassman. It's a Bassbreaker, they are new.
This video shows that modern amps CAN sound as good if not better than many vintage amps. Would be cool if this test was done with a LP or Tele as well.
Carlos Gratski there is another video with the LP
the orange and supro have awesome tone but the peavey and marshall handle the volume insanely well.
+Ryndan Riley Thanks
I'm honestly surprised by how good the bugera sounded. Lots of twang
Considering how cheap bugera is, it did a great job :D A little less high end and you've got my type of tone :D
+MagneticWhistler I liked it too.
watching all of these -- like the Fender Bassbreaker, Peavey, and Koch combo. The Fender is reasonably priced, but the Peavey remains the best bargain!! The Koch sounds great, but at boutique pricing. can't stand the fizzy bugera or orange... the roland is okay, but too country sounding for me - footnote, the ENGL sounds lame to me as the solo setting, but the rhythm sounds great... not sure what that means, just an observation.
Hearing all these other amps makes me really appreciate my Mesa Road King.
Feel free to elaborate
I enjoyed several ... very cool this test.
Supro, Orange and Three Monkeys were the best (in no particular order). But then what about the Fender or the Vox? Relative cheapos Peavey and Roland also sounded pretty awesome.
Some great amps there. I like the Supro best and was pleasantly surprised by the Roland. I would've liked to have a Boogie in the bunch for comparison.
Bassbreaker, 3 Monkey's, Marshall, Supro. To my ears none of the other amps could match the full sound spectrum of the Bassbreaker. I remembered why i don't care so much for Orange. The Vox sounded great with the humbucker's in the other video but not so good with the single coils.
1. 3Monkeys
2. Marshall
3. Dr. Z
4. Supro
First place Supro, second place Supro, and for show VOX !!!!
I know the video is about the amps but its remarkable how thin the stratocaster sound compared to the Les Paul.
Ok, they really all sounded pretty much alike. Some britter, some smoother. The Fender and the cube had the best sound to me. But it goes to show you, any quality cranked tube amp, can get it done.
+rick frost Thanks Rick
rick frost The Roland Blues Cube is solid state...shows what a great job Roland has done, to produce an SS amp that can more than hold it's own alongside all these tube amps!
Koch and Supro tied at the 1st place. Fender 3rd. Vox is the contender for its overdriven-but-not-distorted sound.
Peavey Classic, it's the most authentic... Thanks for the demo
Thanks!
The amps all sounded pretty good cranked all the way up, and all quite different from each other. Compared to the Les Paul in the previous video, some of the amps did better with the single coil pickups, such as the Bugera and the Dr Z where there wasn't too much sag. The Supro was again one of the best sounding amps in my opinion, especially on Rhythm - so much twang. The Marshall still sounded fairly clean at full volume, but was nice.
+Lawrence Gillespie Thanks Lawrence, yeah the DrZ benefitted so much from single coil
Thanks so much for all, great playing too! What you think about blackstar Johan? I'm fortunate enough to own a blackstar ht 40 vintage pro, I used to play an ac30c2 but the blackstar is amazing, very versatile and all around sounding great! Tack
+Frodo Street Thanks, I like the HT1 and HT5 amps, great value
The sound of the orange really shocked me. I think I liked the supro the best.
I don't think I ever heard any amp do better rhythm tones than a Supro regardless of guitar.
Man the BassBreaker sounds killer.
+anthony turco That one is bound to become a Fender Classic
FOR THAT STYLE OF MUSIC, I pick the Fender for lead and (to my surprise) the Roland Blues Cube for rhythm. To my ears, the Supro is very Fender-like, but brighter -- not overly bright like the Bugera. Also surprised that the Dr. Z sounds terrible, like the speaker's closed up inside a cardboard box. (Never heard or played through a Dr. Z.) My takeaway is that the Blues Cube lives up to its name. I'd never know it was a solid-state amp by the sound alone; playing it might tell another story. Thanks for the great video and fair comparison.
+Tim Borek Thanks Tim, Probably the Dr Z, like Orange doesn't have its sweet spot on full volume like many of the others, so the test setup didn't favor them. Those are both great amps too. Cheers Johan
Dr Z amps are hit 'n miss.
The Dr Z was not as loud as the other amps .
can't wait to hear the tele johan
+Classix1969 Thanks :-)
Before the video started I had a feeling the Peavey would dominate high $$$ or not. USA Peavey are awesome period!
Bassbreaker sounds sweet too.
(sorry for my poor english !) You missed the Fender Blues Junior 15 watt valve amp ;-)
As soon as you said full volume lightning struck, I think nature was aware of what was about to happen
+xyzd95 haha! I know :-) Nature feared the onslaught \m/
Ty for demo. Marshall far away, Koch, supro, Vox. Other sound bad in my opinion for the usage made.
Note : Mic set up isn't equal between each amp which is not good for a versus.
+dafxtone yeah, the room mics differ slightly due to amp placement
Not the room mic (it is not really a matter), but the closed mic isn't set alway at the same position on the speaker. Cheers.
no question, the Fender amp
Supro...But Dr.Z has a lot of smoothness
What. The dr z. Sounds like utter horse shit. Which is weird cause he makes incredible amps. I think it needs to be turned down to find the sweet spot and tone settings messed with
very impressive with The Peavey
+Emilio Martín Chica Thanks, yeah it holds up very well
The supro sounded killer, bugera surprised the shit out of me
that Supro has Teeth !
+chuck jones It has indeed :-)
the Bugera has BALLS!
Thank you!!!
Supro!
The dr z sounded killer here
+Zaid Ali yeah it worked so much better with the Strat than the Les Paul
This is the reason I have 12 amps and 24 guitars. They're like liquorice all sorts ;-))
I was really hoping they'd all be on at the same time.
1) Supro = lead + rhythm
2) Bassbreaker = rhythm
3) Peavey = $
Light the engl on fire
Roland Blues Cube
+Igor Maguiña thanks
Supro, Orange,Vox
Bluescube for the win!
+Marlon Borreo thanks
nope but it is close to last
supro supro supro suprooooo! !!!!!
+rayvandragon :-)
Supro FTW
Bassbreaker is the best tone value for money.
Interesting. In my humble opinion the Bugera sounded horrible with the LP, but with the Strat it sounds much nicer.
+CARBr6 I liked it for both, but indeed it worked better with the Strat
Which is strange because the consensus with Bugera amps is that they're thin sounding to begin with. You'd think humbuckers would thicken the tone, but maybe thin pickups work well with thin amps? I had a high end epiohone SG and then bought a godin session (strat model) and the Godin sounds better with my V5
Supro, Roland and Bugera.
