  • Monday 30 September 2024 saw the last liquid iron tapped from Blast Furnace 4 and the last steel from the traditional ironmaking route cast into slab as Tata Steel UK starts its transition to scrap-based, low CO2, electric arc furnace steelmaking.
The Port Talbot site’s Sinter Plant, Blast Furnace 4 and steelmaking operations were brought to an end calmly and safely, along with the associated energy systems and internal logistics infrastructure.
Tata Steel UK's Tim Rutter and Huw Waghorn spoke to team members throughout the day to document a historical moment for the UK steel industry.

Very emotional video. Lived this myself as Ironmaking Controller of Blast Furnace No 1 in Ravenscraig when furnaces 1 & 3 were blown down and taken out of commission. Good luck to all in Port Talbot ❤️

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to visit and document the entire plant earlier this year. The memories truly are priceless

Sad day for all involved and their families. I thought I had a job for the duration until Corus did the same to our Heavy End back in 2001. Good luck to you all👍. Ex Burden Handling and Sinter Plant Operative, Llanwern.

Isn't it ironic that Tata shut the iron making down in PT, yet open a new blast in India......... Hypocritical as there are are no boundaries in the atmosphere.

@@3967742 blame the UK government and its carbon tax, as well as shifting our economy from an industrial based to a service and financial based economic system

Why couldn't the government buy the plant and carry on making steel from uk coal and iron ore, we have millions of tons of it left. It's mental. It's not about climate change when the processes have been moved to another country look at India and china. We are the only country who seem to be doing anything

We could, but our governments of all colours are obsessed by net zero. They would rather the UK have no steel making capability than let a bit of smoke out of a chimney.

This will come back to bite us,we need the capability to produce iron from ore to produce high grade steel, India will not give a toss as they will still be doing it,what a state this country is now.

How management keep a straight face I don't know? They all say bitter sweet for some reason? Apprentices 18 months in now having to look for something else because the steel industry is now dead! TATA and the government killed it all.

    Got a query:
is it true that the new electric furnaces cant produce certain alloys because of the EAF process?
