I remember specifically what I was doing 22 years ago when I heard this song. Verge of going to bed... decided to let concert play. Couldn't believe what I heard. Reloaded save. LIstened again to be sure I wasn't dreaming. This is one of my fav FF songs ever! Found japanese version. Realized in JP version the singer isn't singing over herself, thus why Lenne/Yuna combo in Eng (as it sounds like two singers). Japanese version... just solo. Both versions are amazing but that double singing at the end makes Eng version the best for me!

Yeah. The English version feels like the complete version. Adding both of them singing together makes more sense to the overall story and the lyrics of the song

I was literally just listening to both for the first time in 10 years to see if i still remember the words. I was wondering why in Japanese there's only one singer vs in English it's both Yuna and Lenne singing. Such an interesting creative choice. It makes English feel like the more complete version for once.
Anyone know the story behind the choice??

I think the simplest reason, is in the Japanese version of the song, there's no duet section. It's always just the single singer (Kuda Kodi). Unsure if this addition was a choice made by the developers or in the studio when Jade Villalon was tracking the English version. The passionate ad-libs do seem like an American thing I hear in a lot of pop songs, but fits very well thematically here.
But I agree, that the English version feels more "complete"; perhaps they took advantage of the 6 month gap between releases to give it some more polish.

I grew up with the English version of this song, but I admire how the Japanese version was presented. More emotion was brought out in the Japanese version, while the English version focused on the scenery, and relevance to the story. They're still pretty good though and the quality is great! I wish I could replay this game and FFX for the first time again.

I have mixed feelings. I liked that lenne manifested through yuna in the japanese. But sharply switching between lenne and yuna doesn't make sense. It would make more sense if lenne is glitching right during camera pans.
But, the english version looked more finished, there an effect when lenne appeared. The lighting looked better.

I like the US version better because I love the idea of seeing Lenne and Yuna singing side by side.

The jank with the animation (starting around 3:10) during the duet sequence always bothered me, and the way Lenne just doesn't seem to belong. Now I'm pretty sure it's because it was made specifically for the English version and probably by a completely different team, so I guess the animation wasn't as polished. That said, I do think the English version is overall better, especially the transition from Yuna to Lenne. The way the light explodes off of her to reveal Lenne works really well, whereas the JP version is just a pretty boring fade out-in transition. The music too, I prefer the English version a bit more, mostly because I can actually understand it.

Im sorry but English version is the best how they display the scenes. Was Genuineness. I remember my older brother playing the game i was eight or nine at the time. Im 30 now this song stuck with me and the scenes of concerts. I would later play the both games my self.

Eng has larger eyes, whiter skin, and more dynamic shots.
Jp has squinty eyes, sun tanned skin or some yellow/orange filter on the whole cutscene.

if you look closely Yuna's models are different too, the Japanese have more pronounced Asian face features while the Western version has less, I never noticed until side by side, nice

I prefer the japanese. The song was more emotional because it feels like Yuna wasn't just singing this song for lenne but for herself as well. I also like the idea of Yuna slowly turning into Lenne cuz in the game Lenne's soul was literally using Yuna's body as a vessel until she reunites with Shuyin. So it makes more sense for her to slowly transition into Lenne throughout the song because it's like she's the one telling the story of what happened 1000 years ago. In the US version it feels like Yuna and Lenne were having a duet showdown.

Weird that they chose to color grade the English version to be more drab. That duet makes it a way better song in my mind though.

Japanese version had more vibrant colors defining the atmosphere, however, the English version has a better story telling and a more fluid motion making it more emotional.

But why though? Why go through the hassle of changing the FMV? I know it happens often for censorship but that isn't the case here. Weird.
