Yeah with the project relying on Flash in the past it was a double edged sword in a way, on one hand it allowed for pretty good quality animations and super small files but on the other it was a real pain to keep running properly, and now with Adobe ending its life, the screensaver is no more. Thank you so so much for your kind support of the project in the past, it really means so much to me. Now I do want to mention that the new version won't require a download or installation as it'll be released here on RUclips, so it should work on any RUclips compatible device. This should mean it is way more accessible than before. I need to investigate as to how that can translate to things like animated wallpaper and screensavers etc. but first I want to get it up and released. Thank you again!
Like most people that have commented, I have been enjoying your screensaver for years. Thank you for keeping it going! Went to Envisioning 2001: Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey at the Museum of the Moving in NYC. Even got to screen the film in 70mm followed by a talk with Stanley Kubricks daughter, Keir Dullea and Dan Richter. Sadly the exhibit was supposed to go on until July but the pandemic locked everything down for the rest of the year.
Thank you so much for supporting the project over the years, its wonderful to hear from you and that you enjoy it so much, makes all the work totally worthwhile. I must say I am so jealous that you got to see 2001 in 70mm, and see those involved with its making, that's such a rare and amazing opportunity. That's such a shame that the pandemic robbed NYC of the exhibit :( Hopefully it will come back soon! I am desperate to tour some 2001/Kubrick exhibits!
@@TheHALProject Good News! The Museum of Moving Image in NYC is now back open and the 2001 Exhibition had been extended until September 26 with weekly screenings.
I still use your screensaver, though now I get popups about Adobe Flash no longer supported after Dec 31 of this last year, so I think it's pretty appropriate this update came up. I really can't wait for this to come out! Wonder if there'll be a beta sometime soon? ;)
It definitely is good timing! Thank you so much for supporting the project. It's a shame Adobe is no longer able to support Adobe Flash but we won't let that stop HAL! No plans for a beta.
Hi, been using the old advanced version for years and still love it. Sad to see that as of today it no longer works due to the death of Flash. Just wondering if there is a non-flash version available yet, or if it is a case of waiting for this 4k Remaster to be released?
Hi! I am so glad you enjoyed the screensaver. As it was built using Adobe Flash technology to display the animations a non-flash version is not available at this time. Keep an eye out for updates on this channel - the 4K remaster will not use Flash.
looking forwards to the new version, it was pretty jarring to have the old one stop, and try to figure out why, didn't realise it was the death of Flash, googling brought me here, thanks so much for your hard work on this project.
Oh that's vey sad, but it's great news that you're now here - welcome! I can't wait for you to see how it's all shaping up! I think it's WAY better than the Flash version which had quite a few limitations.
Very happy you are working on a new version since I was crushed when the flash error appeared on my screens. Can't wait! Oh and shut up and take my money.
Hahaha put that money away! It'll be FREEEEEEE! Thank you so much for your kind comment, I am sorry that it stopped working, but we can keep it going here on RUclips!
I recently (re)discovered this terrific screensaver, and enjoyed it for several days until the death of Flash Player. I'm sure I join a lot of fans in saying we can't wait for the updated 4K version.
Very good. I am not sure who I am impressed with more. You with this stunning level of work and rendering. Or Kubrick’s teams that did all this originally without the use of any computer graphics.
Oh 100% it has to be the original designers and team behind the film - it's astounding what they managed to accomplish given the tools at the time - the fact that a science fiction film - made in 1968 (!!) can still hold up to scrutiny today is a testament to their hard work, creativity and dedication to their craft.
Looks fantastic. I wait on bated breath for future updates. Superb work hope it comes to fruition. Definitely need a replacement for the Flash version that is defunk.
I'm about 90% done, just got some brand new animations to include (I've just released a video detailing the process). I am sorry that Flash is no more :(
HAL just went dead on my Windows and (older OS) Macs (Flash inactive) :-( I've been using and enjoying The HAL Project for many years (all editions). Fortunately, it is still running (thank you JM many years ago) on my 15" and 12" PowerBook G4s. I tried in complete frustration to get it running on modern macOS . I'm eagerly awaiting the return of HAL in 4K glory and happy to provide a donation for the incredible work you've produced over the years. I was so sad when your website went dark. Please keep up this amazing endeavor. So excited to see HAL's screens again. Is there a timeline as to when the savoring public can expect the first release?
Sorry about that, Adobe has now blocked all Flash content from playing so sadly the screensaver will no longer function. However thanks to RUclips it can live on! And, it'll be free and you can watch it on any device that works with RUclips (or video). I also want to say a huge thank you for your kind support of the project over the years it means so much. So as for timeline, I can say I'm about 90% done and I want to get some new animations completed too so there something new for people like yourself (who have supported the project over the years) to see! I;ve just released a new video showing 3 of them and detailing the process involved. Hope you enjoy!!
Put that money away haha it'll be here on RUclips for free! But that is wonderful that you both enjoyed the project thank you so much! P.s. there are some hidden little Easter eggs in the new animations if you look closely ;)
@@TheHALProject I see - but you could at least have a paypal link or something for people who wanna support in some way? :) Anyway, I'm just happy to see this screensaver coming back!
At the time, I think 2001's 4K remaster was the biggest improvement over the previous Blu-ray yet achieved. The new Lawrence of Arabia 4K might be the current best.
I'm so happy to know this is coming! This is the only screensaver I have used for at least 10 years on my Mac and PC. Nothing else compares. As with Ironbridge's comment below, this displays on my Dell 34-inch 21:9 ultrawide monitor wonderfully. With the death of Flash and the pathetic white screens I have now, any wait for a new version will be worth it. Paying for it before was no problem and that goes double for a 4K rendition. Is this project anything to do with MRG's demise, I wonder? (Lost a lot of cash there.) The completion of this HAL Project is highly anticipated.
That is amazing! 10 years! I am so so happy you enjoyed the screensaver. Thank you so much for your kind support of the project for all these years. I must admit I do not know what MRG is? No need to pay!
@@TheHALProject Actually it may even be 15 year! You obviously know that yours is the only place to go for a 2001 screensaver! As for MRG... A couple of years ago Master Replicas Group, formerly a (reputable) prop replica maker, got back in the game with a recreation of the HAL speaker module. An extra for the crowdfunding campaign was an attached screen that could play back animations and audio. A little later, another item available for purchase was a HAL 9000 screensaver, that, from images, was very similar to yours. At the time as the HAL project seemed to be dormant, I assumed it was due to licensing issues related to MR. It was about US$20 and I felt it was a rip off, because I was sure it was your work and never bought it. However, I may be mistaken in this regard as the firm said it was developed in-house. What I am not mistaken about is that MR eventually failed to deliver any speakers or consoles, declared bankruptcy after using more than US$500,000 in funding cash with nothing to show. Scammed. Sorry for the sad tale!
@@sliuman Wow I had no idea! I've never had any contact with Master Replicas Group, though I think I've heard of them. I am fascinated now however and will try to find out more. What a shame that they were unable to release their product, but to be honest it does sound very suspect also $20 seems quite steep - how much was the speaker module? Does that mean people will have lost money by crowdfunding? If so, that's really terrible. To rake in half a million dollars and have nothing to show for it? That's crazy.
@@TheHALProject Bad news all round really. I lost some US$800. Stupidly I went from ordering just the speaker which was about US$300 and upgraded for the whole package. They even charged for delivery upfront. I should have know that was suspect immediately! I must have sucker printed on my forehead lol! As you can imagine, it makes me feel real sore.
@@sliuman I am so sorry to hear that, and I'm sorry if it brought up bad memories. Thank you so much for sharing. I had a look and I can absolutely see why you'd go for such a product it looked great! Anyway, hopefully the HAL project goes some way to help!
By coincidence, on the weekend I was looking through (once again) the 2001 section on the Typeset in the Future website, and ended up ordering the book by Dave Addey from Amazon 🙂
It’s pretty comparable to the website, though of course it’s stuck in 2018. Some expanded sections in the book, though some fewer images of course due to space. Overall, I like it, and nice to have as websites don’t always last forever, though I hope that one does.
Hi. just came across this project and i am soo exited for the realese. I love the film and HAL 9000 . Very cool to see the history of the project from the first realese to this one. Cant wat to download it. And by the way, for a product like this whith so much time and effort put into it you could definitely realese it as a paid download. Would love to support the project :) From Norway :)
Thank you so much for your kind comment. The film is AMAZING. So the new release won't require a download as such, as it'll be all released here on RUclips. Also its going to be 100% free but thank you also so much for your kindness to support the project. Right now I just want everyone to see it!
How is the re-incarnated HAL Project going to be packaged? Not all of us are on Windows or Mac; today's world include Linux desktop machines, Chromebooks, Smartphones, etc....
Good question, so this will be released here on RUclips (meaning any RUclips compatible device can display it (TV's, Tablets, Mobiles etc.) so it should be way more accessible and it won't require installation or Flash. I'll have to investigate if there are applications that can display RUclips videos as a screensaver, but right now I'm concentrating on getting it ready.
I'm soooo happy to see this project isn't dead. Any idea what happened to the thehal9000.com website that this used to be on? The whole thing is down. Or was that a different but similar screensaver?
I'm not sure about thehal9000.com, it was indeed a different but similar project. It's likely down because Flash has recently come to the end of its life and Adobe has blocked Flash content from running.
I am asking for 3 monitors. And the real animation of the AE-35 module, in the old version only the monolith was rotating. I wait and bite my nails. GOOD LUCK.
I WAS working on the 2001 screens up until I saw yours, so I'm putting my focus back on the USCSS Nostromo telemetry screens from Alien. I've been using JS to make them fully interactive, but I think the higher res, crisper, and more detailed animations such as yours are the way to go. Are you using Adobe After Effects or something similar for your animations? Edit: Apparently I'm just going to comment on every...single...video you have haha.
Oh wow I would love to see what you create for the Nostromo!! So all animations were exported from Animate - with some After Effects and Premiere tweaks (for editing and special post processing effects) but really Illustrator & Animate has been my software go-to(s) for the project. Keep the comments coming, I love it!
@@TheHALProject Definitely good to know. I ask because I'm a back-end dev by trade, so my design tooling and workflow isn't very robust at the moment. I want to change that. I've been meaning to finish off the Nostromo screens for quite awhile, and this looks like the perfect catalyst. I REALLY like your deliverables and how you've laid this project out. With your permission, I'd like to "franchise" your approach...like, something akin to "The Nostromo Project" or what have you...make it a spiritual sibling of The HAL Project.
So the new version won't require a download as it won't be a traditional screensaver application, instead I think releasing it here on RUclips will allow for greater flexibility with any device that is compatible with RUclips (think TVs, Tablets, Mobiles even) also I know there are applications out there such as "Wallpaper Engine" that allow videos to be used as background wallpaper. I'm about 90% finished so really not too long to wait.

So I'm about 90% done so really not long at all, I do want to work on some new animations and have just released a video detailing the process. No specific @Mac@ version will be needed as it'll be released here on RUclips, but I;m sure there are Mac applications that can display videos as screensavers or maybe even desktop wallpaper.
So I looked into this... If you post the video, I can "download" it with my app. I then can strip the audio with my software. 1) On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Desktop & Screen Saver & then click Screen Saver. 2) Open the Screen Saver pane l. 3)Click a screen saver on the left, then set options for how it will look on the right. ... Set options for when to show the screen saver.
@@moondog0468 Yes for the release it'll live on RUclips, I'm hoping it offers much greater flexibility for people with RUclips compatible devices. I'll definitely check out your instructions as to how we can get it running as a screensaver, and I can post an update to everybody! Thank you!!

Will there be any way to download the Manifold typeface? I've been working on animating an old presentation of mine on the mathematical modeling of oscillations in star formation regions. Basically, after staring at my screensaver for so long I started to wonder whether or not you could actually use this style to present and communicate actual science and math concepts. Long story short, my final project for my mathematical modeling course stole the show. It's not perfect, and I'm limited by the capabilities of PowerPoint (surprisingly capable), but I feel it absolutely captures the spirit. It would probably be even better if I had the Manifold typeface to use. I'd love to send you a copy of the presentation, but I couldn't find any way to do that. If you'd like to see it, just let me know how.

Now to find the Pipes or Flying Toasters screensaver in the mean time...
The Museum of Moving Image in NYC is now back open and the 2001 Exhibition had been extended until September 26 with weekly screenings.
thanks again...top shelf quality
Cant wait. Have some ideas for you too . . .
I would LOVE to hear any ideas or suggestions!
@@TheHALProject I am so looking forward to this again!
looking forwards to the new version, it was pretty jarring to have the old one stop, and try to figure out why, didn't realise it was the death of Flash, googling brought me here, thanks so much for your hard work on this project.
Oh that's vey sad, but it's great news that you're now here - welcome! I can't wait for you to see how it's all shaping up! I think it's WAY better than the Flash version which had quite a few limitations.
Fantastic work! Looking forward for the new version!
Thank you! Can't wait for you to see it.
Wow! I've had the full version for a long time and love it but flash has gone away on my PC and iMac. I can't wait for this new version!
Thank you so much for your kind support! I am so glad to be brining HAL back to life again.
Looking forward to the new version. I was sad to see my dying screensaver today
Sorry about that :( But HAL can live on!
So much yes. This is awesome.
Thank you!!
I recently (re)discovered this terrific screensaver, and enjoyed it for several days until the death of Flash Player. I'm sure I join a lot of fans in saying we can't wait for the updated 4K version.
Yeah it was awful that it stopped working, end of an era, but thanks to your support it's the beginning of a NEW ERA! A 4k resolution one!
Very good. I am not sure who I am impressed with more. You with this stunning level of work and rendering. Or Kubrick’s teams that did all this originally without the use of any computer graphics.
Oh 100% it has to be the original designers and team behind the film - it's astounding what they managed to accomplish given the tools at the time - the fact that a science fiction film
- made in 1968 (!!) can still hold up to scrutiny today is a testament to their hard work, creativity and dedication to their craft.
Looks fantastic. I wait on bated breath for future updates. Superb work hope it comes to fruition. Definitely need a replacement for the Flash version that is defunk.
I'm about 90% done, just got some brand new animations to include (I've just released a video detailing the process). I am sorry that Flash is no more :(
@@TheHALProject Fantastic to hear. I'll be sure to check that out. I'm subbed and ready for any future update drops. Can't wait for release.
HAL just went dead on my Windows and (older OS) Macs (Flash inactive) :-(
I've been using and enjoying The HAL Project for many years (all editions).
Take my money!
(I just really miss the screensaver - me and my dad used to look at it and try to figure out what the numbers meant haha)
Anyway, I'm just happy to see this screensaver coming back!
Its awesome. God job and tks for share!!
Thank you so much!
Cool! Has it arrived yet? Is it worth a buy?
It’s pretty comparable to the website, though of course it’s stuck in 2018. Some expanded sections in the book, though some fewer images of course due to space. Overall, I like it, and nice to have as websites don’t always last forever, though I hope that one does.
@@KiloOneThree websites don’t always last forever - 'aint that the truth! But I agree its a wonderful site and an amazing resource for this project!
Looking forward to the 4K version. Please let us know where I can purchase from when ready..
No need to purchase! It'll be free! But thank you!
Very interesting! Thank you
Hi. just came across this project and i am soo exited for the realese.
I really miss the Mac OS screen saver, especially on a 5K iMac.
Circling back: Any chance of a release of a usable font version of Manifold? It looks gorgeous in the first full release!
Yep! I plan on producing a video soon to coincide with the release of the typeface!
@@TheHALProject Wonderful news! Can't wait to see!
Oh hell yeah!!
Woo hoo!
GOOD LUCK.
I am SO glad you asked. Check out the latest video :) this one is for you!
Outstanding. Is there any chance you might release the new Manifold font for use outside of HAL?
Good question! I don't see why not!? Once I've finished the remaster I can get that out.
@@TheHALProject VERY cool.
With your permission, I'd like to "franchise" your approach...like, something akin to "The Nostromo Project" or what have you...make it a spiritual sibling of The HAL Project.
can't wait - either - but how can you download the files when it's finished ?
So the new version won't require a download as it won't be a traditional screensaver application, instead I think releasing it here on RUclips will allow for greater flexibility with any device that is compatible with RUclips (think TVs, Tablets, Mobiles even) also I know there are applications out there such as "Wallpaper Engine" that allow videos to be used as background wallpaper. I'm about 90% finished so really not too long to wait.
How will this work? Does windows support custom screensavers or do I have to open a website every time? Never used a screensaver on windows before tbh
So this won't be a traditional "screensaver" as before, so it won't require installation or Flash. Instead it'll all be released here on RUclips as videos (meaning any RUclips compatible device can display it (TV's, Tablets, Mobiles etc.) should be way more accessible. There may be some applications that can run it as a screensaver, I'll have to investigate, first step is to release!
When do you expect to have the screensaver finished? Will there be a Mac version too? Thanks!
@@TheHALProject I don't understand, is it just going to be a RUclips background "screensaver"?
So I looked into this... If you post the video, I can "download" it with my app. I then can strip the audio with my software. 1) On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Desktop & Screen Saver & then click Screen Saver. 2)
Open the Screen Saver pane
Thank you!!

Heyo, will your masterpiece of a screen-saver work with macOS?
This won't be a traditional "screensaver" program, so it won't require installation or Flash. I would imagine Trumbull would be amused...
I wonder what he would think of the project. Hopefully he'd enjoy it!
Wait! But will it be in flash ?
Nope! It'll be released here on RUclips as videos so no requirement for Flash.
Sure thing! I'll add it to my list - its not been finalised for distribution as yet but let me get back to you on this!
