50 years ago, I was unable to assimilate its message, but I was enthralled in the same way that I am now. Something embedded itself within me back then, and it continues to this day. Yes, I've lived with its narrative of mankind's eventful evolution to the infinite. After all, that's where we are all heading!

As said elsewhere, the graphics seems to be right out of Rosenblatt's "The Perceptron: A Probabilistic Model for Information Storage and Organization in the Brain" (1958). I'm shure Kubrick studied the report (basically the first baby step in neural networks, upon which HAL is built according to the novelization, although the method of backpropagation "learning" would only come later, more in Schmidthuber's "Annotated History of Modern AI and Deep Learning") punted the paper to the arts department and said "I want something like this!!". (And diagrams of orbitals can be found in "Gradient Theory of Optimal Flight Paths" by Henry Kelley, October 1960. It is unlikely that Kubrick consulted that one though, it is related to Rosenblatt's paper by a reference in the future, but he may have found the ARS Journal in which it appears)

Getting conflicting information about what font it is that HAL uses on his screens. Some say it's Manifold while others say it's Eurostile Extended Bold. It could be different in the sequel 2010, which I am also trying to find out about, but the info I did find says it's the same font as the first movie. Can you do a little ELI5?

I have always found it horrifying that the computer could kill 4 of the 5 astronauts in the story and almost killed the 5th. I read the novel and HAL killed them by opening the doors and letting the air out, if I recall correctly. I guess the programmers didn't instill the 3 laws of robotics into HAL. Asimov penned those in the 1940's. First Law A robot may not injure a human being or allow them to come to harm through inaction. Second Law A robot must obey orders from humans, unless those orders conflict with the First Law. Third Law A robot must protect its own existence, unless that conflicts with the First or Second Law.

Where can this screensaver be bought? RUclips quality is degraded ...

The Discovery filming model was 50 feet long. When it was finished the builders showed it to Stanley Kramer and he didn't like it and wanted changes, the builders put a dust blanket over it and it sat until filming. It was filmed with no changes and Kramer loved it.

Like you, I also make computer graphics animations and I have a project that I hope will be as memorable as yours in terms of paying homage to Stanley Kubrick and Arthur Clarke's film. As I am an Astronomy and Astronautics teacher, I love watching this film to inspire me and this is how my project called "New Worlds Of 2001: A Space Odyssey" came about. My intention is to recreate all the space scenes from the film using the 3DS Max software and Chaos Corona Renderer and, for this to reach a high level of excellence, I need to use the well-designed Discovery One scrensaver. With this in mind, I would like to ask for permission to use it in my project.
