  • How to repair a leaking immersion heater or renew one. Can be a tricky job and it really is a case of having the right tools. I have shown this job on an old copper tank in my garage, but do not forget to isolate the power to your immersion and disconnect the cable before trying to remove it from the tank.

    Good stuff Al as always I have changed two elements tonight on a normal and economy 7 cylinder I have the flat spanner I had to cut a little of the foam insulation away to get the spanner to fit 162 litres of water had to be drained I have fitted Incoloy elements the cheap copper elements both failed within two years.Keep up the great teaching videos Al.

      @@dereton33 so sand it down and flux then soft solder around it. So I use the solder flank not the more expensive mechanical flank, probably spelt flank wrong.

    Always a lot better with a full tank as the water gives the tank rigidity.. BUT.. once it is loose than reduce water level.

    Had a pin hole in my tank so had it replaced but the heating oil boiler won't start up now. It seemed to work for an hour or so but no more. Pressure looks fine at about 1 and typical the plumber isn't available for a week. Any ideas or videos ??? To get me out of a hole 🙏

      You have air in the heating system, I have lots of videos on the subject.

    When the boss white gets hot over time it goes rock hard which wont help if ever replacing. Thats advice from a pro on YT.

      Without it, you would have to rely on the washer, any impurities on the tank top ring will not be sealed by boss white, so without it you might end up with a leak. That`s advice from a 55 year old plumbing experience pro.

    you can use a bit of ptfe and a smear of clear silicone as well as the washer ,, that way they will undo ...

    I used the 'shock method' hitting it with a hammer, then tried a blowtorch, then tried some freeze spray - nothing worked, the blumin thing is stuck solid in the tank....and now weeping small amounts of water from the seal. It has been in place in a hard water area for 12 years. I put the old one in. didn't use any sealing compounds, PTFE etc, just the standard seal. Anyone have any other ideas for getting it out ? I'm tempted to drill out the center of the heater element , then use a chisel to hammer the remaining bit out ?

      Did you have the small heavy spanner as shown in the video? Large stillsons ect, just tend to rip them straight out of the tank.

      Yes I have that spanner. It eventually came out, I sprayed it with loads of plusgas left it overnight and it came out easy the following day !!! I then discovered a pin-hole leak in the tank copper - so have just ordered a new tank. I'm actually quite pleased I discovered the slow leak, by way of replacing the heating element - because I can fix it now, rather than coming home to water pouring out of the ceiling when the tank fractured.

    Do not hit the spanner with a hammer you will pinhole the immersion boss use a box spanner with a long bar to remove immersion

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  6 лет назад +1

      No that will crease the top of the boss do not undo with one of those.
