I'm kinda sad to have learned Tchaikobsky held such a low opinion of his own piece, even going as far it being an artistic failure, and hated the fact that the 1912 Overture became his most popular piece. Notwithstanding his personal appreciation for it, I think it is an incredible piece of art, full stop.
It tells a story, actually. The french anthem is played to portray the French army marching in loudly. Everytime the Russian Folk song “u rovot” or the Orthodox hymn is played, the French Anthem is played a lot louder right afterwards. This is a signal that at the time the French is winning, but when the Theme comes, the Russians are actually gaining back the higher ground. Then, the bass line declines in pitch and amplitude, signaling that the French is retreating.
