The Fantasy (Fantasia) for piano, vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra, Op. 80, was composed in 1808 by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is known as the Choral Fantasy (Chorphantasie). Beethoven wrote the piece to conclude the Akademie, a benefit concert for him on 22 December 1808, performed by soloists, chorus and orchestra. The long program presented also the first performances of his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies and the Fourth Piano Concerto. Beethoven was the composer of all pieces, the pianist and the conductor.
The unusual composition unites piano, voices and orchestra. The work begins in C minor, but modulates during the second final movement to C major. The choral section at the end shows similarities in themes to the finale of his later Ninth Symphony.
The premiere performance seems to have been a rather troubled one; according to the composer's secretary, Anton Schindler, it "simply fell apart," a result most likely attributable to insufficient rehearsal time. Because of a mistake in the execution of the piece, it was stopped half way through and restarted. In Ignaz von Seyfried's words:
"When the master brought out his orchestral Fantasia with choruses, he arranged with me at the somewhat hurried rehearsal, with wet voice-parts as usual, that the second variation should be played without repeat. In the evening, however, absorbed in his creation, he forgot all about the instructions which he had given, repeated the first part while the orchestra accompanied the second, which sounded not altogether edifying. A trifle too late, the Concertmaster, Unrath, noticed the mistake, looked in surprise at his lost companions, stopped playing and called out dryly: ‘Again!’ A little displeased, the violinist Anton Wranitzky asked ‘With repeats?’ ‘Yes,’ came the answer, and now the thing went straight as a string."
You forgot to add notes to the midi file for the coughs...

Ewwwww, who would have a profile picture of Beethoven?

Eh, with Beethoven you mostly don’t hear them.
8:18 is my favorite! So intense but also weirdly dance-like
That right hand octave section beginning in 3:01 is so intense, so beautiful. Anyone else?
I agree...
100%
Absolutely
Indeed
100% true
7:09 Beethoven in 1808: This sounds good, let's use it in the choral fantasy.
Beethoven in 1824: This sounds good, let's transpose it and use it in the finale of my 9th symphony. :D (I love him
I feel a little awkward now (I read the description).
Lol, I should try this sometime in the future.
i dont hear it
He made a variant of the meoldy bro. If you listen carefully, certain parts of the "Ode" have some relation to the "Gegenliebe" melody. Even Beethoven noted this himself. (even if he didn't hear, he could technically imagine what the music would sound like in his head.)
@@arsantiqua8741 I still can't hear it
The repeated astonishing use of g sharp at 17:03 brings me to tears.

Beautiful🥲
17:35 This is the most epic and colossal C major that i've ever heard.
3:00, 8:19 C Minor + Beethoven = 🤩
SO TRUE
He loved C minor
Every time I thought your videos couldn't get better, they did. This has got to be the best Synthesia I've ever seen, and you made it in three days? That's amazing. Apart from a few piano parts that weren't synced perfectly (which I know you have to do manually, that's A LOT of work) this video was perfect.
Hi thanks for the kind words! :)
This is only my 5th try with a live recording, and I still have a lot to learn and get the rubato right
I was going to write "good job, this is awesome" but i think i'm gonna write :
THAT WAS A FUCKING MAGNIFICIENT VIDEO!! I adored watching it!! Thanks. Perfect video! Perfect music : Wow!!
Really good job
Oh man, thanks a lot!
2:44 this part is so epic
1. 0:05 Adante-0:39 Allegretto
2. 3:40 Allegretto
3. 14:56 Pesto-Allegro vivace
in some way I think this one is better than the 9th because of the piano. love it all my life.
18:21 this moment
To the one guy who claps early at the end, we salute you! Your superior knowledge of this masterpiece is forever immortalized on this recording. I bet you still tell anyone who will listen that its you at the end, clapping early, because dag nab it, you knew it was gonna end, and you were gonna be first to clap!
9:31 its like a rock and roll.
8:10 Somehow I didn't mind that cough........
sounds like fugue in some parts XD just my opinion..
FDYOLGOOSE Eljan it is a fugue in parts
@@emperorjimmu9941 you are correct. In order for something to be classified as a fugue, it must satisfy very specific criteria

Fantastic video...one of my favorite Beethoven pieces.
I actually performed this once with a community choir - I had never heard it before then. We got this music and started practicing, and our director told us that there was 15 minutes of piano and orchestra before we came in. As fun as this is to sing, being behind an orchestra for that 15 minutes and to revel in each of the sections getting their moment to shine is one of my favorite memories singing in any choir.

This is seriously one of the best things ever composed. Not just in music; truly one of the best things ever.
Nope
@@stravinskyfan What do you mean nope? Don't come here unless you're going to add something useful.
@@PubicGore That guy is just being silly. If you liked this one, Beethoven’s 9th is basically this, but on steroids. He also considered his missa solemnis as a crowning achievement.
@@andyxyz01 I've listened to both of those pieces so many times already. I definitely don't consider the ninth to be this on steroids, though. Beethoven's most crowning achievement though is definitely the Grosse Fuge.
@@PubicGore “Beethoven himself acknowledged the kinship of the two works. In a letter of 1824, when he was writing the Ninth Symphony, he described his project as "a setting of the words of Schiller's immortal 'Lied an die Freude' in the same way as my pianoforte fantasia with chorus, but on a far grander scale." “ -from the wiki article about the choral fantasy.
The visualization is very cool.
14:40 That was dramatic!
Blue - Piano
Red - Strings
Green - Woodwinds

Hi, if you take requests can you please do Edvard Grieg peer gynt suit no. 2?
Hi, yes I do take requests but as much as I want to, I can't do all of them :(
I'm not saying I won't do it one day though :)
+PianoCzarX can you do only Arabian Dance?
If I ever do it, I'll do the entire thing

thanks bro
Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Leader, Matthew Truscott. With the BBC Singers. Pianist & Director, Leif Ove Andsnes @ the BBC Proms 2015.
There was a recording of this performance up. It's gone now unfortunately... The chemistry between the orchestra and the pianist was very fun to watch.
Beethoven really liked this hey signature didn’t he?
13:05
The story was that Beethoven was so carried away with his improvisation at the piano that the conductor at the concert (closing piece at his famous 4 hour benefit concert) was so utterly confused and has to restart again. Don't know whether its true or not but that's the story told.
8:10 cough?
Wow this is a REAL FANTASIA!
It's much easier then the fugue of Symphony 9 to "understand".
Seeing the video reminds me of my childhood, when my grandmother had a 'player piano', 'pianola', with a large roll of punched card that you loaded into it and the piano played... the holes in the punched card as it fed through the piano looked just like the strips on this video.
7:04 sounds so much like the 4th movement of the 9th symphony!
no, I listened to the entire symphony, and no
@@Quidoute yes it does

the chords in 8:32 😘👌
It's like Ode to Joy and 1st Movement of Piano Concerto 1 combined together.
To me, this represents western classical music a lot. A very grandiose piece of music, and lie I said, this is a representation of western classical music in 1 piece. Really loved it!
Really is a shame that they took down the only video of this performance on youtube...
How can you take something that is on the public domain
The trills are just slightly off...
Actually a lot of things are
Can you imagine, how difficult it can be to align it with the recording?
@@dannydrumplayer2802 that isn't really an excuse. If ur making is and uploading it then make sure its synced
@@Numberonesorabjifan Ok, but you have to be tolerant. Out of 20 minutes of content missing a few trills is nothing tragic.
Just wonderful.
You're da best
nice channel, good content. You deserve way more subs! Have you ever thought about chopin's nocture op.15 no. 2? I've never seen a good synthesia version of it.
This is my favorite Beethoven piece by far
TheRetardedTeenager I complied a list of the best Beethoven on my channel, if you like his music you should check it out, I recommend the string quartets and piano sonatas
It’s a damned hard argument to make, but I’d advocate for this being the greatest standalone piece of music ever written.
@@uscjd2004 Agreed
this is amazing. How I'd love to hear this live.
