Торжественная увертюра «1812 годъ», соч. 49, in English, The Year 1812 Solemn Overture, Op. 49, popularly known as the 1812 Overture, is a concert overture in E♭ major written in 1880 by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to commemorate the successful Russian defense against Napoleon's invading Grande Armée in 1812.
The piece begins with the simple, plaintive Russian melody of the Eastern Orthodox Troparion of the Holy Cross (also known as "O Lord, Save Thy People"). This represents the Russian people praying for a swift conclusion to the invasion. Then, the French National anthem, "La Marseillaise", is heard, representing the invading French army. Then, the melody of "La Marseillaise" is heard competing against Russian folk music, (such as U Vorot, Vorot, a folk song brought up in the piece) representing the Russian people representing the two armies fighting each other as the French got closer and closer to Moscow. At this point, five cannon shots are heard, representing the Battle of Borodino. This is where "La Marseillaise" is most prominent, and seems to be winning. After this, a long descending run represents the French army retreating out of Moscow as the freezing winter rages on. At the end of this run the hymn that the piece begins with is repeated. This can be interpreted as prayers being answered. The grand finale culminates with eleven more cannon shots and the melody of God Save the Tsar!

One of my ancestors was forced to fight in Russia in 1812, and came back alive. Most men did not. Napoleon might have been a military genius to a certain point, but Europe was very thankful to Russia to liberate it from "the monster" as he was called in the first half of the nineteenth century.
Well then thanks to him for his service!

We play this annually at our July 4th (Independence Day) concert with our Civic Band in my small town in midwest USA. It's become a tradition in many places here. As an American Orthodox Christian, I was surprised to see the translation of the lyrics!
How fitting as Bozhe Tsarya Khrani starts, it has a picture of Nicholas. Truly God save the Tsar!

1812 overture is meant to commemorate what’s called the first Patriotic War, not a conflict that American was really even party to. It’s ignorant to use another country’s music, history, and culture as if it’s your own. Most Americans don’t even know the overture has lyrics, if they did, they’d realize it’s not meant for us.

Its an old russian lyric
It's a Russian folk song called u vorot vorot. it's supposed to sound like the czar in a village getting common folk to join together to fight the French.
Wrong lyrics, it actually is "pabedui blagovernomu imperatoru nashemu nikolaiu"
I love even tho it supposed to be napoleon fleeing but now a days it use as one final push against un winnable odds against anything the most recent guts and blackpowder uses this perfectly as you escape the catacombs of pairs against a horror of hell overflowing

@@natalyaanikina4873 потому что Иван Грозный Рюрикович, а не Романов. Гимн Боже, Царя Храни появился в период Романовых. Так же причина, по которой автор показал именно Николая II может быть в том, что он пока что последний Царь. К тому же он великомученик. А ваша претензия очень странно выглядит.
