    This is always fascinating.
This is what I think the US was like before OSHA, and the regulation boards, seeing how they take an absolutely non-straight tube of metal, put it into the biggest lathe I have ever seen, and then proceed to get things done without anyone using any safety methods, using a V-Belt to lift a few hundred pounds, having someone stand on a few large pieces of metal as they stare into the bright light emanating from their welder, and then create something like is just insane. I suggest safety equipment, but you still got it done.

There has to be an international Machine Abuse Hotline.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars of machinery, 7-Up bottles to dispense cutting fluid, no micrometer, no paper towels , baggy, long sleeve clothing. Now I understand why there’s no old machinist in this video.

Did you notice there were at least three lathe operators on that job? One turned the shaft, the second one did the disc layout the third the screw cutting then he filed a 60 or maybe 55 degree thread using a rectangular file with 90 degree edges, that made for an interesting thread profile! As for the welder, well he ain't one! I could teach a monkey to weld better than that lol

Back to the middle ages. Why? Drill press base completely destroyed by "why not drill through the part and take the table with it" I don't get it. A piece of wood or a sacrificial piece of steel underneath would keep this machine nice and accurate for decades. Why has everything has to be tightened down with extra levers? The levers only should be enough. This is probably the reason they wore out... Why always working in the dirt on the ground? The factory has enough scrap materials laying around to build a proper workbench for working on. Why the use of smartphones and don't bother to buy one nice calliper or a range of three for the whole shop? I watched a lot of these videos with "expert machinists" and I'm getting annoyed with the attitude towards working a metal shop. Everything has to be made cheap because there's not a lot of money around and I totally understand. But the attitude and the lack of a will to improve the job you're working on is astounding to me. Buy an old machine, treat it well and keep it going. Get your shop organized e.g. clean the floor and shop periodically as a first. Buy some lamps, build a workshelf, don't buy the next model smartphone but a nice analog or digital caliper in the range you work in. Kick out all the people who don't add to your production process. Take a pee ok, but leave and I call you this evening or something like that. It seems to me that there's no real ambition to get things better and I believe this is a cultural thing. My granddad did it this way, my dad too and now I'm living in his shop and make a little money too. What is happening here? Maybe someone with better cultural knowledge could explain this to me? I bet if I bought a new lathe for this shop today it would be ruined a year later. There's no love for equipment and no drive to do better it seems. Curious for your answers. Best, Job

@@chaspullen3544 In some respects I doubt that. I find these videos interesting because they are a strange mix of sometimes very clever simple solutions and horrible incompetence.
The welding done here is just terrible and that is due to poor craftsmanship, not equipment.
In this case of drilling, they could obtain a few riser blocks (could even be wood) and clamps they can make themselves. They can fabricate anything.
Somehow they have the basic metalworking machines but very little peripherals, like measuring tools or logistics aids like pallets and pallet trucks. Although you need a good floor which is often not there also. And we don't even have to go into safety gear and culture!
Also basic shop floor organization (order and cleanliness) are very much a mentality thing. They never have a shortage of people so it should be simple to achieve. But I guess it all boils down to culture and I am not into imposing anything on anyone.
