Yes I agreed with others that this probably is the best explanation of the single handed backhand in action. One thing I'd like to add is through out the swing, the arm should remain straight and relaxed, start breathing out as soon as the racket drop started. Oh I love those one handed down the line... ^^

Finally! Ever since your “backhand on the run” video from a few years ago, I knew you were the real deal. I myself started using the one hander pretty early, my teacher did show me the two-handed when I started, but I couldn`t actually touch the ball with it, so it was a one-hander by default. Today I think I have a pretty solid backhand, but, you know, there`s always more to be learned, so I watch youtube videos from time to time, and I have to say, you`re showing a very different (and in some ways superior) backhand than they do. I was really happy to see someone teaching it the way you did, it might not have taught me a secret I didn`t knew, but it will definitely be a game changer for some people.
By the way, when I was starting tennis and learning the timing of the ball, I started my backhand swing low, just as you said in your video. I call it the Samurai position, and it does indeed produce some surprisingly high amount of pace. When I developed a good notion of the contact position and timing, my preparation naturally shifted up. So, if you`re learning, don`t be ashamed or afraid to do the Samurai, just remember to focus on this video`s technique.

Very nice breakdown of the backhand stroke. I used to have a two-handed backhand and it was one of my best shots. I later switched to a one-handed backhand. It took time (losing matches) to be confident with it, but it paid off in the end. What was key for me is when Ivan Lendl mentioned in his book that in boxing..hitting a fighter with a backhanded punch is illegal because it is so powerful. I don't know how true that statement is, but it made sense to me like how you mentioned coiling your body before making contact.

This is awesome! I did some shadow swings in my living room starting with the takeback high, dropping the racquet lower while starting to shift my weight toward the front foot, then turning the hips and starting the forward swing, and swinging through with a free/loose follow through.
You make the sequence, the unwinding of the coiling, and all the aspects of the swing all come together in a simple, understandable, and racquet head-accelerating whole. Thanks!

I understand the coiling where shoulders are rotated away more than the hips. But don't understand the uncoiling. Do the shoulders and hips uncool together? Or do the hips uncoil first with shoulders slightly lagging?

Great video, but just want to add one more essential element of the swing: The reversal of the shoulder and hip tilt.
It is right there when you take your full swings, but is left out in your progressions.
Lifting the racquet high in the backswing creates a shoulder tilt, such that your hitting shoulder is higher than your front shoulder. Your hips are tilted as well, as your body assumes a "C shape" with the side of your upper body tilted into the court.
This shoulder/hip tilt, C shape does 5 things:
    1. Loads the body with more potential power, as reversing the shoulder/hip tilt involves large body muscles that can power the stroke.
    2. Will let you take your racquet through a longer path, building speed along the way.
    3. Helps drive your hitting hand straight down into the slot position.
    4. As the shoulder/hip tilt is reversed 1 /2 way tthrough the stroke, it helps you direct the butt of the racquet up and at the ball.
    5. Allows you to look over your non-hitting shoulder for a really good look at the ball.
    So again, great video.
But I would add in a fourth element to your progression of the shot: starting with a high racquet takeback and pronounced shoulder/hip tilt to provide that initial burst of speed as the racquet drops, and a continued increase in speed as the reversal of the C shape of the big body muscles helps power the shot.
This is adding a body movement in a whole different plane/dimentson than the coiling/uncoiling motion that you correctly emphasize as the biggest source of power in the 1HBH (and indeed all shots).
[This reversal of the shoulder/hip tilt (or C shape of the body) is emphasized in the serve but is there in the backhand (1 and 2 hand), and the forehand as well.]

I am still a hybrid backhander right now, normally I am a double hander but due to a nasty wrist injury I had to switch for a while and I want to keep it and train it. I have more control and placement with my double but more penetration and spin with the single hander.
