Like another reviewer stated, this is the best instruction I’ve ever seen on the one handed backhand. Simply explained, yet Kevin understands the subtle biomechanics that will take this shot from a liability to an outright major weapon. His explanation of timing, waiting, and fluidity at the end is so crucial and it’s something so few people understand. Just a brilliant video.
Hey man. Ur honestly the GOAT for online tennis instruction. 8 Years of coaches ripping me off and searching the internet on technique (Maybe other instructors mean well but could not effectively explain concepts). I finally feel a chance at playing in college after doubting myself for years since, my work put in did not equate to my progress.
With out a doubt, the best tutorial on the one handed backhand I have viewed. Concise and relatable to the majority of us out there, which is the recreational club player. Excellent instruction!
This is the first video clip where someone explained the backhand grip in a way that fully makes sense, ie the hammer analogy, can't wait to get out and try it! Thanks so much
So happy I stumbled upon this. Went to the court yesterday with these specific things in mind and my backhand looked hella better at the end of the session than the start. Plus, that cut to you with the hammer was a perfect comedy shot. 11/10 would recommend
This guy is amazing, I tried today two videos about a good forehead and the one explaining Djokovic's, I felt really different, a friend later saw that I was too stiff on my knees, after also adding that I felt a completely different forehead. Kudos!
Thank you for the great content! It makes so much sense when you devide it in to five steps. Here in Denmark it’s 8.45 AM now, the sun is shining and I’m off to the tennis court with my brother to practice my one handed backhand. Let’s go 🤘🏼🎾
Happy to see you're back, found this channel when i started playing was abit disappointing you stopped posting, one of the best on youtube! Hope the algorithm will be with you this time :)
Hi Kevin, Thanks so much for this video. I do have a question though. How relaxed is your wrist with the OHBH? Is the same with how relaxed you forehand is the just let the racquet take it's course? or should your OHBH wrist be fixed until you release it after contact? I havent really felt relaxed on my backhand. I guess a better picture would like, is it relaxed the same as your forehand when doing mini tennis where you really feel the brushing of the ball? or is it normal for the OHBH to have wrist then release? How do I even play mini tennis with OHBH without slicing the ball LOL Thanks much! More power to you!
Hey Kevin, thanks a lot for your videos...they have helped me to figure out where my weak points are...also, a favor, can you add some videos of your swings, backhands, etc...in slow motion? I know you do put some videos, but if you can add some from differente angles in slow motion we human beings (you are our god, dude) could follow and pay closer attention to those moves you make so effortlessly and copy them on the court. Thanks in advance, keep up the good work! Regards from Mexico!
Excellent instructional video. I have a 2-handed backhand, but I would love to be able to hit a 1-handed backhand like this. It is such an elegant and beautiful shot.
Great instructions. For years I have been making the exact errors you are pointing out. I already started to change into double handed backhand because I had lost any faith in my formerly good single handed one. Watched your video, went on court today and started hitting winners! Thank you!
Really great information! I prefer the one hander. I haven’t been playing long and when I started I had some power and it just disappeared. I’ve been trying to figure out why. I def need to change my grip and fire my hips first. I appreciate your clear precise, instruction. Thanks!
With all due respect, I feel that listing racket drop as a separate step is a bad idea, although I agree that racket drop is crucial. The reason is that people try to drop it deliberately which ruins the fluidity, continuity of the swing. IMO the step should be forward swing instead, but with the recommendation that it should be ‘high to low to high’, similar to a pendulum actually.
I totally understand what you're saying. In the beginning I did the same thing but notice that players would skip the butt pull position and never achieve the leverage and power that can come from that set up position. Just to be clear all the step should be trained to be fluid but fluidity rarely comes naturally. It's trained. I know because I had a two handed backhand all through college tennis and switch after playing juniors, college and futures tournaments. I really appreciate your perspective and comment. Thanks
Best one hand backhand instruction. Matter of fact one of the best instructors on RUclips. My $80 an hour lesson I recently got not anywhere near this man’s level. He has clear understandings of tennis mechanics in its entirety.I wud pay $$$ to get real coaching from this guy. Great job coach! 👏
You have a veeeery nice backhand sir! Very loose and explosive, kinda reminds me of Shapovalov's. I also like that you keep your arm a bit loose during the unit turn (rather than straightening it like Thiem), which is my favorite way of doing it too. I think it feels way smoother and looser that way. Explanations were great too! All in all, a very nice video, thanks a lot for that and cheers!
Your instructions seem to lineup with what I see when I watch college and professional tennis. No one compares to you. How can I arrange private lessons? Is this even possible? I work with NOAH tennis in Tulsa and need to improve my tennis knowledge and ability for the kids.
You and your Wife are truly a dynamic duo 🔥 in your teaching tennis presentations. For near 40 yrs I’ve been learning and teaching tennis and always riding the waves of tennis strokes evolution (sometimes seeing what others don’t) You my friend are an exceptional wave riding tennis instructor 🌊🎾😲🙂
Besides the horrendous overgrip , the instructions are just perfect: precise and to the point. The terminology is well defined and every idea is passed simply and clearly. One of the best BH instructions on web. Well done !!!! Subscribed and your fan from now on.
Thanks so much on some of your recent videos .you cover the fundamentals real well instead of others tennis coaches who teach that this is “how it should look” which I never get instead of how to execute the stroke mechanically
This video is pure gold. All the concepts are relevant, clear and well explained. He is showing the movement and the gesture after each explanation, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 times and even more. If you don't get it, call your doctor.
I agree with the early unit turn, waiting, initiate and swing. I struggle sometimes with the early unit turn when playing with good players. Nice video!
I been coaching and teaching tennis for 30 years. Solid fundamentals are the foundation on which your tennis game is built. With out them your consistency drops and your tactics are limited. More points are lost and you give points to your opponents. On the one hand backhand I love how Kelvin’s racquet preparation. With his hitting shoulder turned and racquet held high it is more difficult to read his shot. Is going cross court, down the line,? Will it be a top spin, flat drive, slice or drop. When you play at a high level you are trained to read your opponents so things like racquet preparation on ground strokes and ball toss on serve can provide an early warning to a skilled opponent. Lots of players have a forehand weapon to attack. It’s important to have a reasonable backhand that is not valuable and a liability. You don’t have to hit winners off it but you have to have consistency and placement. If you also have disguise and variety of spin this will help turn you into a mean ground stroke machine.
Hi Kevin! Thanks for the tips. Here is what I've been doing recently: 1. Moving my right foot across 2. Bending my knees 3. Keeping my eyes on the ball through contact - head down 4. Dropping my racquet - from about shoulder height I am getting good [easy] power, so I am experimenting with my grip to get some heavy top spin. Yesterday I hit my best backhand in a while, without feeling any strain on my body. Anyway, let me know your thoughts.
Happy to see that there are still people making videos on the single handed backhand which should be dedicated to all those who believe that the double handed one is much better in the modern tennis.
I was a 2 hander once but the one hander improves my slice and volleys on the backhand side. Best of all it looks cool to rip a BH winner with you pose with racket above your head at the end of the stroke. Must be an awesome sight to the receiver.
I really like your tip saying to get the racquet back sooner! Can you follow up with a video about what your wrist is doing (or not doing) through contact and afterwards? Also, what does a one handed do about high balls?!
my cousin who originally taught me tennis and my one-handed backhand sent this to me, and since then, I’ve been playing on-and-off for 10+ years, this has increased my confidence on my backhand from 60% to a 85-95% reliability. thanks!
One thing nobody says about the unit turn is that at least for me, I understood the right movement when I was told to point the front shoulder down towards the ground, if you don't say or do that the rotational force pushes your body backwards and you end up out of balance
Also play with OHBH, and my experience is that the racquet type and specs have a some impact on an effective OHBH, thinner (22mm or less)-headlight(6-7pts)-heavier (335gr+) racquets seem to perform more effective
Thanks for your very good description of the extreme grip, extreme topspin backhand. This backhand"s evolution has its beginning with players who grew up on slow red clay where heavy, heavy topspin rules.. The extreme grip makes this style less versatile than than some historically great backhands such as Laver and McEnroe. Your impact position at 06:22 is the perfect example of a generation who started with two hands and then made the switch to one. The real problem is that your impact position is not instinctively safe for the front shoulder. You have lost all powerful leverage from the big back muscles and all you have left is the rotator cuff area. Thanks for this very good description of what I consider to be a "generation lost" backhand.
Honestly you’re clearly among the best tennis instructors !! Focusing on the fundamentals is the key to almost everything ^^ what a great video to learn 1HBH the right way
Which fundamental do you need to work on?
How to line up and get behind ball? Pls help!
Definitely my grip and serve toss.
1 Drinking beer, I feel like I need a LOT of drills to work on this funadmental! 2 Also footwork which is kind of improved by fundamental 1
Perfect lesson. Thanks a lot. Technic and training method. I need the same for the forehand. I will search it probably it is already. Thanks again.
The approach volley coming to the net. I can often just run kamikaze style with no first volley leaving myself exposed to the passing shot

The only tennis coach who gets a like before even watching the video!
It's true! I liked before watching!!
I did too! His first few examples showed that he can demonstrate what he teaches. I respect that.
Dear coach
We love you from Turkey.Your lessons are helpful.
You are a natural instructor and a teacher. Very nice energy and style... Awesome
The best explanation I've seen. Can't wait to implement these techniques in my game.

Unbelievable how well this is explained both technically and practically.
Excellent example.
You are very good at teaching!
With out a doubt, the best tutorial on the one handed backhand I have viewed. Concise and relatable to the majority of us out there, which is the recreational club player. Excellent instruction!
You're phenomenal coach! Awesome video
Absolutely brilliant stuff

Nice video, I’ll try it next time I play
Well explained! Thanks
Man, you fixed my backhand.. I really missed the initiation. That gives the extra effortless boost! Thanks a lot..
Really clear explanation. Great instructional video.
Excellent!!! Excellent !!! Excellent!!!
This guy is amazing, I tried today two videos about a good forehead and the one explaining Djokovic's, I felt really different, a friend later saw that I was too stiff on my knees, after also adding that I felt a completely different forehead. Kudos!
Thanks, I love hearing about the results of watching a video.
You're a genius as usual :)
Amazing!!!!!! Great video

Happy to see you're back, found this channel when i started playing was abit disappointing you stopped posting, one of the best on youtube! Hope the algorithm will be with you this time :)

Thanks a million.
Good video.thank you for share.

You chose the right racquet to demonstrate that Orange really stands out ... able to watch the stroke clearly
Super.
We are a beginner tennis RUclips club working out in Korea. We learn a lot from your channel. Thank you always. I love your tennis video.
Awesome! Thank you, super excited that my videos are touching players in every part of the world!

Best presentation on the topic I have seen! Thanks Kevin.
Excellent instructional video. I have a 2-handed backhand, but I would love to be able to hit a 1-handed backhand like this. It is such an elegant and beautiful shot.
Yes, I agree. I use to have a two-hander all through college and switched after college. I love hitting a clean one-hander. Thanks for watching.
Great instructions. For years I have been making the exact errors you are pointing out. I already started to change into double handed backhand because I had lost any faith in my formerly good single handed one. Watched your video, went on court today and started hitting winners! Thank you!
Great video. You're an excellent teacher.
You are the best! Probably never able to get the correct backhand form if I didn't watch this video. THANKS!

Superb coach you should be very proud of your achievement

Thanks, Edward! Yes, pass it around!
Besides the horrendous overgrip , the instructions are just perfect: precise and to the point. The terminology is well defined and every idea is passed simply and clearly. One of the best BH instructions on web. Well done !!!!
Subscribed and your fan from now on.
Awesome video. That tip on timing changed my shot. Very much appreciated my friend!
1:42 “You can get everything else wrong, but if you get the racquet face right the ball goes over the net.“ 👍
This is great. How does the unit turn differ between one handed drive and one handed slice? Can one use an identical unit turn for both shots?
Brilliantly explained this coach is spot on!

Man I've seen a loooot of videos on youtube explaining this, but you took it to a whole different level! Congrats!!
Thanks, this is fantastic. Will also check out the 2 handed
Hey Kevin!
How are you guys? Remember you from Ian's.
5:30 It’s like when you all of a sudden slam the break and everything is rushed forward.
Thanks always, you're the best!
Awesome video Kevin! I often revisit your 1-handed BH videos to recalibrate my form ✊🏽

Love this lessen. Super helpful. Thanks!
Best one-hand backhand instructional video that I've seen. Everyone else skips over the hips.
I really appreciate the step-by-step breakdown. I know I've really got to work on that racquet drop portion. Great advice Kevin. Thanks!
This guy is the best! My game improves every time I watch one of his videos.
Best one handed backhand lesson !!!! Thanks
I love your videos ! perfect !

Nice explanation. Thanks.
Explained well master.
Great vid with great explanation and drills. 10/10

Kevin, you're the man. Tennis can be a simple game with your coaching.
Thanks
Teorix gampang..tp praktiknya susah banget.. saya biasa pakai tangan dua...
What's wrong with using the continental grip for backhands?
Not being able to generate much topspin n if u try doing so u will hit the ball everywhere.
6 should be move your feet so you can hit the ball at your optimal contact point
Great point on initiating the hips as the hip activation must stop prior to contact. If they’re still moving at contact, you will hit long.
Honestly you’re clearly among the best tennis instructors !! Focusing on the fundamentals is the key to almost everything ^^ what a great video to learn 1HBH the right way
