    Like another reviewer stated, this is the best instruction I’ve ever seen on the one handed backhand. Simply explained, yet Kevin understands the subtle biomechanics that will take this shot from a liability to an outright major weapon. His explanation of timing, waiting, and fluidity at the end is so crucial and it’s something so few people understand. Just a brilliant video.

    Hi Kevin,
    Thanks so much for this video. I do have a question though. How relaxed is your wrist with the OHBH? Is the same with how relaxed you forehand is the just let the racquet take it's course? or should your OHBH wrist be fixed until you release it after contact? I havent really felt relaxed on my backhand. I guess a better picture would like, is it relaxed the same as your forehand when doing mini tennis where you really feel the brushing of the ball? or is it normal for the OHBH to have wrist then release?
    How do I even play mini tennis with OHBH without slicing the ball LOL
    Thanks much! More power to you!

    With all due respect, I feel that listing racket drop as a separate step is a bad idea, although I agree that racket drop is crucial. The reason is that people try to drop it deliberately which ruins the fluidity, continuity of the swing. IMO the step should be forward swing instead, but with the recommendation that it should be ‘high to low to high’, similar to a pendulum actually.

    • @TotalTennisDomination
      @TotalTennisDomination  3 года назад +3

      I totally understand what you're saying. In the beginning I did the same thing but notice that players would skip the butt pull position and never achieve the leverage and power that can come from that set up position. Just to be clear all the step should be trained to be fluid but fluidity rarely comes naturally. It's trained. I know because I had a two handed backhand all through college tennis and switch after playing juniors, college and futures tournaments. I really appreciate your perspective and comment. Thanks

    You have a veeeery nice backhand sir! Very loose and explosive, kinda reminds me of Shapovalov's. I also like that you keep your arm a bit loose during the unit turn (rather than straightening it like Thiem), which is my favorite way of doing it too. I think it feels way smoother and looser that way. Explanations were great too! All in all, a very nice video, thanks a lot for that and cheers!

    I been coaching and teaching tennis for 30 years. Solid fundamentals are the foundation on which your tennis game is built. With out them your consistency drops and your tactics are limited. More points are lost and you give points to your opponents. On the one hand backhand I love how Kelvin’s racquet preparation. With his hitting shoulder turned and racquet held high it is more difficult to read his shot. Is going cross court, down the line,? Will it be a top spin, flat drive, slice or drop. When you play at a high level you are trained to read your opponents so things like racquet preparation on ground strokes and ball toss on serve can provide an early warning to a skilled opponent. Lots of players have a forehand weapon to attack. It’s important to have a reasonable backhand that is not valuable and a liability. You don’t have to hit winners off it but you have to have consistency and placement. If you also have disguise and variety of spin this will help turn you into a mean ground stroke machine.

    Hi Kevin! Thanks for the tips. Here is what I've been doing recently:
    1. Moving my right foot across
    2. Bending my knees
    3. Keeping my eyes on the ball through contact - head down
    4. Dropping my racquet - from about shoulder height
    I am getting good [easy] power, so I am experimenting with my grip to get some heavy top spin. Yesterday I hit my best backhand in a while, without feeling any strain on my body. Anyway, let me know your thoughts.

      I was a 2 hander once but the one hander improves my slice and volleys on the backhand side. Best of all it looks cool to rip a BH winner with you pose with racket above your head at the end of the stroke. Must be an awesome sight to the receiver.

    Thanks for your very good description of the extreme grip, extreme topspin backhand. This backhand"s evolution has its beginning with players who grew up on slow red clay where heavy, heavy topspin rules.. The extreme grip makes this style less versatile than than some historically great backhands such as Laver and McEnroe. Your impact position at 06:22 is the perfect example of a generation who started with two hands and then made the switch to one. The real problem is that your impact position is not instinctively safe for the front shoulder. You have lost all powerful leverage from the big back muscles and all you have left is the rotator cuff area. Thanks for this very good description of what I consider to be a "generation lost" backhand.
