- Perfect One Handed Backhand in 3 Steps - Perfect Tennis (Episode 5)
The one-handed backhand in tennis is arguably the most beautiful shot.
However, it causes many issues for countless tennis players around the world. Even Roger Federer had his one-handed backhand exposed by Rafa Nadal for much of his career.
Some players possess outstanding one-handers though, Stan Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet, Gustavo Kuerten, Tommy Robredo, Tommy Haas, and many others have shined using a one-handed backhand.
In this lesson, Coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will show you exactly how to hit a perfect one-handed backhand in three steps.

Happy new year 🥳
Excellent for the backhand
Thanks, Simon. Could you please clarify which bevel the heel pad of your palm sits on as well? I think it makes a difference and it’s been a struggle for me for a long time.
great video, thanks guys
Thanks for watching 🙏
Thank you!!! Very good.
Thank you 🙏
Grazie Simon buon anno e buon tennis
Happy new year 🙏
Great video, thanks a lot! Also, did anyone notice the hummingbird flying across the screen during Wawrinka's backhand at 3:48?
Many thanks
Thanks for watching 🙏
Thanks a lot!
My pleasure 🙏
Very good explained from coach
Thank you for the support 🙏
Wawrinka already looks at the opposite side even before he makes contact with the ball. His technical ability is flawless.
Excellent! I miss my one hander! I’m wishing my arm is strong and I can return to my one handed killer backhand! Thanks for the inspiration too 🎾🏆🤗
Vamos 💪
Hey coach, what racquet do you use, I have been using the duel g 330, its great for my ohbh but for my forehand it feels clubby as i have a bent elbow western grip, im trying to learn a straight arm forehand but i think i need a lighter racquet, thanks.
Excellent ! Could you please do the same video with very low balls so we can see the legs ?
Einfach und verständlich erklärt.🔝 👍
Many thanks 🙏
I improved at least 0.5 for my rating right after watching this video
Vamos 💪
Zdraveite Simon, nqkolko suveti za visoki topki za bekhend s edna ruka? Blagodarq!
Very nice
Many thanks 🙏
Any tips for a slice backhand? Does the ball height help determine whether a slice or normal one-handed backhand is best? Thanks for creating such clear and concise instructions!
Perfect slice backhand lesson is coming soon
My question has always been on when to release my left hand (I’m a righty). Seems like some players almost follow through with it…. I played with a guy with a good one hander the other day and he felt I was releasing too early. When is too early? 😊Nice video bro! Thanks 🎾
I would say any time between the racket drop phase and the lag phase is a good release point. Before then it’s too early to
Thanks Bro! @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
I like a shock absorber pro kennex oversized racket
You nailed how to teach a one handed backhand. This is the best video i have seen on this topic. Do you know who I believe founded the modern one handed bbackhand technique? I believe it to be Eliot Teltscher. Thank you for the awesome content!
I'm struggling with aim and faster ball coming towards my backhand
Simon, which camera do you use to record video ?
GH5 👍
Nice Reminder !
I learned Backhand by copying Ivan Lendl in late 80's... 🙂 now my inspiration is Stanimal !
Stan has the best one hander I’ve ever seen, incredible power
1000% right !!! @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
could you do a doubles return of serve class
Tactical, technical or both?
both would be great especially the sooner the better usta season (summer) begins soon@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
Simon are you using 1 or 2 handed your matches?
I don't see many coaches talking about one handed BH being BETTER than 2 handed. I particularly think one handed is better unless you learned 2 handed since childhood
I use a two hander but this year I’ve been using the one hander due to a bad left shoulder injury. It’s allowed me to develop the single hander
What ball machine do you use?
I’ve got a few machines, a slinger, tennis tutor and a Staneg pro
What is this court? 😮
A wall court 👍
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficialThank you for answering this question! I was so confused about the court. Everything about the one-handed backhand fundamentals is well explained. I especially liked how you explained the limitations of certain grips for low and high balls.
I think wavrinka is using semi -western bh.how you think?
Stan uses an eastern, same grip I advocate in this lesson 👍
It looks different than a standard eastern bachand grip. I think his palm is on bevel 8 and index knuckle between bevel 1 and 2. It's either like this or he holds eastern backhand with a hammer grip.
Simon, all excellent points in terms of what a national, international player achieves when they hit theor one hamded backhand. Are there any tips that would help a beginner, intermediate, advanced or slightly higher to achieve these aspects. Especially, how ro hit in front? I dont believe a player intemds to hit a little late but it is that none of these yiutune videos explain how to hit futher in front, in terms of what acrually helps a player like yourself, hit further in front. Ive actually hit with you and played points against against you but this video fails to explain the core teaching aspects that helps a beginner, intermediate or advanced player actually develop
I meant to add. All of these things can be explained within their understanding of a practice swing and the important aspects to develop, understand but as a coach, it is important to explain how they can achieve these things, as, players by themselves, may understand the technical explanation but struggle when a ball is travelling towards them. I'm conscious that I never see this explained in these videos. For me, that would be the most important thing, because they will then feel in control and start to develop, or enhance, in the case of an advanced or national player, by doing these other things that you don't mention
Making contact in front comes down to many factors, being in the right position (footwork) having an ideal backswing, tracking the ball properly from the time it comes off the opponents racket, early preparation, and using the correct stance for that particular shot all play a part.
For mastering the technique of this shot, we have a step by step system that we use which is what our backhand course on our website is based on.

The rise of the two-handed backhand is mainly due to the fact that the age at which kids start playing tennis is getting younger and younger. Children have more power and of course more stability with the two-handed backhand than with the one-handed backhand.
No such thing.
