  • This is a wind chime that I made for my parents' gazebo. It is made from maple with mahogany inlay and wind sail. The pipes are copper tubing, held with nylon string.
The inspiration comes from Steve Ramsey's wind chime project, which can be found here:
    • How to make wind chimes
Lee Hite's detailed information about wind chime construction, including some of the science behind what makes a wind chime, can be found at his website:

    Music:
    archive.org/de...
DEBUSSY: Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10
    Budapest String Quartet:
    J. Roismann, A Schneider - violins
    B. Kroydt - viola
    M. Schneider - cello
    I. Animé et très decidé
    III. Andantino doucement expressif
    Columbia 78rpm Set M-467 (XCO 29394 - 29401)
Recorded December 10-12, 1940, Liederkranz Hall, New York

I hope you still see comments on this video. I realize that it is eight years old, but it is very timely for me.
The algorithm suggested this video to me just this morning. Coincidentally, I finished my first set of chimes yesterday, and started designing my second. I have spent time on Lee Hite's web site, and find it invaluable. Without it I would have had to determine everything by trial and error.
Your chimes are beautiful, both visually and sonically.

What a wonderful gift of yourself to give your parents!
Simply beautiful craftsmanship and fine attention to detail, as was obvious in the hummingbird feathers.

Beautiful piece. I’m intrigued! But also understand I’m no where near this level of expertise. It would have been nice to have a bit more explanation on like what tools you were using but that’s just coming from a beginner. Im sure if I go to the local improvement store they can guide me on tools as well. Gold Star 🌟

The method used here to hang the chimes is a bit mixed up.
The thread is attached to a wire inside the tube.
This is meant for a one point hanger.
If you are using two hanging points for each chime, just pass the thread through both holes and tie the ends to the hanging points.

This is a fine approach. The rod will be much less likely to wear the string. But it's mostly an esthetic choice, and I think this looks great.

The reason I suggested restringing the chimes is so that they sound better.
The method used here will mute the sound of the chimes somewhat.
They may sound good, but they will sound better without the string touching the end of the chimes.

Nice work but no information. How long tubes, where holes drilled, so in other words your just showing off how good you are. And you do a very nice present for your parents.

Thanks for asking. The chimes are still hanging to this day, and they sound as good as ever. I've since replaced the wind catcher (the hummingbird) with one made from copper.

Very informative, but the music was a bit louder than your voice, and a little annoying. The genre reminded me of those old black and white horror movies with Boris Karloff. I expected to hear some lady scream and a werewolf howl. lol
Seriously, I think you did an excellent job on this.

The proof is in the sound, and these sound great! He pointed out that he is using Lee Hite's guidelines. Lee provides ideal suspension points and striking points.
