My Dad had wind chimes just like this kind. He loved them. He told me one morning he went outside and found all the chimes bent in half. He said, he quickly got the message that perhaps some neighbour may not have loved his wind chimes as much as he did. That was the last of my Dad’s wind chimes. So funny. We laughed so hard at the story. So now whenever I here chimes, I think of my Dad. He passed about 5yrs ago.
No need for expensive materials and tools...I made mine with off-cuts of 50mm curtain rods and a Ryobi hand drill a jig-saw and a file. 5 tubes, top disc and clapper, tear-drop shaped piece of leather from an old school brief-case...lovely tones!
These are pretty much the same as the wind chimes I made except instead of the conduit, I used beer cans. And instead of stringing them up, I just toss them into the yard after drinking the beer. The wind still blows them around the same though.
Great video. Thanks. Just a note for someone who may not be a fisherman. Easiest way to cut squirmy fishing line is with finger nail clippers. However I used aluminum wire for durability.
I made a wind chime a few years ago with the tubes from another chime. I guess you could say that I repaired the chime, but I had to make all the wood parts from scratch. Instead of drilling one hole for an eyelet, I drilled 2 holes in the location of the chime and then used one long piece of line for the whole thing. Instead of fishing line though, I used the stuff they use for making jewelry. It's as thick as strong fishing line but it has a steel core coated in plastic. And it's extremely flexible. That was a few years ago and the wind chime is still going. Honestly, the line is the only thing I would change from your build. The line can also simply be crimped instead of tying. Although you can tie it also. Thank you for the great video. You have a new subscriber.
@@homebuiltshop I just re-watched the video. Still enjoyed it. I'm finally in a position where I can do more projects and this is what I'm choosing as one of the first projects. Also, recording that extra footage is where you get the "Bloopers". LoL!
Found a broken one of these and I am repairing it. Instead of fishing line I am using a leather cord. Thank you for the eyelet idea this one was just hung with more fishing line. The chain and eyelets will make this more durable. I need that in West Texas.
@@homebuiltshop I have been trying to download the patterns but the page not loading at all, I would like to make one like in this video, can you give me the length of all pipes and the string holes length also, the rest I can manage (I think lol). thanks in advance
Thank you. I am repairing some older wind chimes for my wife, and I found some easy ways to improve the look from your video.... Thanks also, for the link to Lee Hite's website...
Jeff, What a great video. You not only describe step-by-step on this project clearly but your sense of humor is appreciated. My workshop is similar to yours and I really enjoy building things like the windchimes to give as gifts. At times (as any workshop enthusiast would agree) things can get frustrating and your humor is spot on for stuff like breaking critical parts and having to repeat visits to the store for small stuff. I have found you just have to walk away sometimes and laugh at the stupid stuff that is bound to happen. Plus it gets your creative juices going trying to figure out solutions 'on the fly'. I discovered after watching your video that a flashlight shining from one end of the tubes will illuminate any burs on the inside. Just a hack I figured out. Keep up the good work and thanks for the informative video!
I did this too and found that painting them really cut the lasting tone . The second resonating tones. I redid it with out paint and sounded way better . Awesome vid !
I just found your channel ( I was searching how to do a chime and I found you and thank God I did your chime it's really beautiful and I loved following the process) Much greetings from Brazil!
The reason you want to drill the thread hole in different places for different length chines is what is called the node or nodal and anti node or anti nodal points. This has to do with the vibration of the chime. The middle and ends vibrate the most and the anti nodal points vibrate the least and if done perfectly(not around this shop) doesn't vibrate at all.
Well done... I used a guitar tuner to adjust the length of pipes to get perfect pitch on each tube... my next set I'm going to make out of exhaust pipe.
nice video! to prevent broken screws scraping them over beeswax or over a bar of soap works as well, and pre drilling deep enough so they don't bottom out is a must in hard woods!
Beeswax or parowax but avoid soap, especially if exposed to high humidity (like outside). Long term the moisture can cause cheapo hardware to rust into wood fibers & maybe rust through. Those eye screws have a thin plating at best.
You were very smart wearing a dust mask when sanding purple heart. But you should've worn it when bandsawing and routing it as well. And completely enclosed eye goggles.
You asked... Aesthetics - Need to lose the 'chain' and replace it with the line you used to hang the pipes. The chain sticks out like a sore thumb, gaudy. I love these kinds of chimes. I have a pair that are tuned to C mas 9. Thanks for the video... I think I might try and make one!
Also if you work with conduit much, there is a specific "conduit reamer" tool (Klein & Greenlee both have it) with a screwdriver handle, makes quick work of that. Standard tool belt pouch item for most any electrician.
I like the way you present the whole thing. I appreciate your unassuming way and give credit and acknowledgement where it's due. BTW, your finished wind chime has a nice tone to it. Make some more things and post them... you're very presentable with your skills. All the best. Cheers!
OMG, What a tale....perseverance furthers! Good on ya mate. Gotta love those trips back to the hardware store. ....simply need to develop the capacity to say yes to what is. Blessings on your journey🙏 and thank you for sharing yourSelf
I was surprised that aluminum tubing worked. It was thicker and a harder aluminum (7075?) than some. I used that guy's site for some advice and they mightn't be at perfect pitch but they sustain and are well-liked. The slight dissonance makes for a mysterious sound, so I'm happy.
Nice build I've used purple hart in the past it looses it's color if it's out side ,you can oil it easier to refinish if you choose to .on the acrylic sail sand the edges like you did then use a blow torch the edges will turn clear no sanding marks great job on the chimes
Wow I went to that guys web site to check out the templates...after reading through his Ebooks and watching your video I figured I’m better off buying one! So much work goes into them. But your video was awesome!
I really enjoyed your video on how to make wind chimes I wanted to make some wind chimes out of some electrical pipes that I had leftover from when I had my electric done in my house and a 10 and I didn't want to throw them away so when I saw your video I saw one video once before I don't know what the guy's name was but he had a similar video on how to make wind chimes out of pipes to but I really enjoyed yours because you are very detailed you are very descriptive you show everything you tell us everything that you're doing and what you're using for tools so it gives me an idea of what I need to have before I get started because I was clueless before the guy that showed before he didn't really give you you a whole lot he showed you how but I needed some very specific Direction so you really nailed it and I want to thank you and I enjoyed you thank you so much
I've found that the 50lb line will degrade in the sun after a full season with weight on it. I replaced the line with picture frame wire. A tad clunky but far more durable. Chimes still sound good too. Thanks for the build advice.
I wonder if different brands of line have different properties. So far, I haven't had one of these break. They've been outside in the elements since I made them. Thanks for sharing your experience. Its something to take note of.
Large deep or tough wood screw insertion trick -- save and utilize all those small slivers of shower/bath bar soap. It makes a great no-mess lubricant.
You should pick up a deburring tool. Just a screwdriver sized piece that easily lets you chamfer the inside edges of holes. Instead of filing / sanding / rotary tools. Super consistent and easy to use.
Want to hear something strange? I'm gonna tell ya anyway.. lol. I've been rebuilding wind chimes for 2 days... Never looked "wind chimes" up. Haven't watched anything about wind chimes. But my hubby called me on the way home from work last night, and I told him I was still rebuilding wind chimes. Magically today, I get this video sent to me. 😳🤯
Wow! That was awesome!! I loved this video. You explain things good too. I'm thinking about making a few of these as a wedding party gift. I know my girls will love it. Thanks for sharing! #subscribed
looks great pinman, try using fingernail clippers to cut the fishing line. I figured you would have tried sharpening your bandsaw blade,i was suprised how easy it was.
+Chad Lowrance good call on the fingernail clippers. I will try that. Yeah, I'm slacking on the blade sharpening. I did look through my files and I think I need to buy one to do that. I don't have a good file that small.
I liked and subscribed! I’m checking out Lee Hite’s website! Great job! Beautiful wood, beautiful chimes, beautiful teardrop, beautiful sound! (You are funny!)

Beautiful n fun story...thanks for sharing
I wish I was the neighbor. I love the sound of wind chimes...
You can never have enough of your Dad....its a sweet thing bro !!💕🌸
Fun story, and sorry for your loss.
I was casually walking today and came across a 44” windchime with the most peaceful sound I have ever heard
I appreciate people so much that mention other people on their own video

You got it! Use what you have.
The look on that little girls face communicates your success with these chimes, they sound beautiful! Thanks!
She loves them.
These are pretty much the same as the wind chimes I made except instead of the conduit, I used beer cans. And instead of stringing them up, I just toss them into the yard after drinking the beer. The wind still blows them around the same though.
Yours sound like the best chime ever. I'll help you make a new one. Lol.
Jeff Baker sounds good buddy.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
hahahaha thanks for the laugh
The sound of them blowing down the driveway is magical.
As much as I love the video, It just proved to me that i'm never going to do this and I will just buy them instead 😅
Great video. Thanks. Just a note for someone who may not be a fisherman. Easiest way to cut squirmy fishing line is with finger nail clippers. However I used aluminum wire for durability.
Thanks for the tip. I need to get a set of clippers to keep in the toolbox.

Oh yeah, one line, then loop it through. I've seen some like that.

Great work and tutorial! I especially appreciated your mistake with the eyehook and how you overcame it.
Thanks, unfortunately these sorts of things happen and we need to be able to fix it and move on.
I was smiling when I heard that first note, great job, I think that/s going to be my next project
They are fun to make and sound great too.
@@homebuiltshop I have been trying to download the patterns but the page not loading at all, I would like to make one like in this video, can you give me the length of all pipes and the string holes length also, the rest I can manage (I think lol). thanks in advance

Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful.
I'm impressed.
The sound is beautiful.
Perfect.
Thank you very much!

Thank you. I do like the challenge of fixing an error, and like you said, I also have to walk away many times. 😁
The tip on where to locate striker patterns, priceless
Thank you 😬
I did this too and found that painting them really cut the lasting tone . The second resonating tones. I redid it with out paint and sounded way better . Awesome vid !
I should experiment with that.
I just found your channel ( I was searching how to do a chime and I found you and thank God I did your chime it's really beautiful and I loved following the process) Much greetings from Brazil!
Awesome. Good luck with your chimes.
The reason you want to drill the thread hole in different places for different length chines is what is called the node or nodal and anti node or anti nodal points. You sir are an idiot
Thank you for sharing such thorough instructions.
Beautifully equipped workshop.
very professional looking chimes love the chains and eyelets
You convinced me to buy a wind chime.
Well done... I used a guitar tuner to adjust the length of pipes to get perfect pitch on each tube... my next set I'm going to make out of exhaust pipe.
I thought about trying to use a tuner to get it exact. Exaust Pipe should sound cool. I bet it starts getting pretty low toned with the bigger pipe.
nice video! to prevent broken screws scraping them over beeswax or over a bar of soap works as well, and pre drilling deep enough so they don't bottom out is a must in hard woods!
Thanks. I have gotten used to waxing the screws now. It works much better.
Beeswax or parowax but avoid soap, especially if exposed to high humidity (like outside). Long term the moisture can cause cheapo hardware to rust into wood fibers & maybe rust through. Those eye screws have a thin plating at best.
I ❤️that industrial windchime.!!! Thanks for making it look so easy-even w/the small mishaps. And!!! Most important: U still have all your fingers. 😉
You were very smart wearing a dust mask when sanding purple heart. But you should've worn it when bandsawing and routing it as well. And completely enclosed eye goggles.
Brilliant video. Love the content.
But if I’m honest, it’s the last 5 minutes of ‘real’ footage that I thought was great!
Keep it up!
Omg this windchime is really awesome...nd its sound take off all stress
It's so peaceful. 👍
Very informative video. You make it look so easy and do a great job!

Thanks for the feedback. I may make another one sometime myself.
Awesome. This will make my wife happy!
Perfect!
Cool project. Just an FYI, the pipe cutter should have a burr tool. It's a flip out triangle. 😎👍
It does but I feel the file gets it smoother. Either way works though.
Also if you work with conduit much, there is a specific "conduit reamer" tool (Klein & Greenlee both have it) with a screwdriver handle, makes quick work of that. Standard tool belt pouch item for most any electrician.

Wow! Church chime awesome!

I really think you could use most anything. I too like a little bit of dissonance.
Thank you! You've done a nice job constructing this, and definitely inspired me to attempt a new project.

Loge the idea of eye hooks instead of just tieing to the top's holes. Nicely done!
Simply beautiful...So peaceful !!! Muchas gracias and God bless you !!
That was such a good video and funny too. Thanks for showing the outtakes so I know things can happen, even to pros!
Thanks, the outtakes are one of my favorite parts. Lol.
I love wind chimes and those sound beautiful
Thank You.
This was a very well done project I enjoyed watching it amd learned some good tips I'm going to try it with my daughter thanks
Thanks. It's a great family project. 👍
Beautifully done my man. Great attitude. Really nice. Love it.
Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I like the natural color of your wood its beautiful.
Thank you so much
Thank you so much
Thank you, nice workmanship. This has been very helpful for me.
Very cool wind chimes! Good idea to make multiples!
I really enjoyed this video. My very first choice in creating wind chimes. Thanks for making it look easy. 🤗
Thanks!
ive been thinking about doing this for myself. nice job man.
Lee Hite is an amazing resource! Your chimes are almost like the chimes I've built!
I really like the video. I have to edit my comment and add- i love the bloopers prt at the end.
That came out beautiful!!😮
Thank You!
Excellent job on the Wind Chimes.
Thanks! I love the sound of them.
This was a great video to use to repair a set of chimes that have split and broke. thx
That is what I have to do, too.
Next time you want to get the burrs from the tube holes, use either a round, half round, or oval jewellers file from the outside.
Great Idea. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you for showing the outtakes! That made it realistic for me! If at first you don't succeed... Lol
It happens to us all. Lol.
Nice thanks for the video. I did some in bamboo,
I've found that the 50lb line will degrade in the sun after a full season with weight on it.

Excellent Jeff, but quite tedious. But who says good things are easy to get. Wow, i loved it.
It can get tedious for sure. Final result it worth it.
It sounds awesome! Beautiful!
Your the first person I've seen that used the pipe cutter correctly. The cutting blade follows the rollers around the pipe.
You should pick up a deburring tool. Just a screwdriver sized piece that easily lets you chamfer the inside edges of holes. Instead of filing / sanding / rotary tools. Super consistent and easy to use.
They are gorgeous chimes, and that wood is so beautiful. I'm gonna save this to Favorites!
Enjoyable video, love your shop!

Go for it. Its a fun project.
Awesome build. Very easy to follow

LOL! Great video, especially the end! You sound like me, but I tend to add a few flourishing words to my conversations. Thanks for the video!
You are so welcome!
Loved the wind chime 🤗
Loved the outtakes 🤣
Thank You! I love the sound.
Great job on the explanation. Very interesting. Appreciate the resource you mentioned as well.
Thanks. Lee's site has sooooo much information. lol.
Really lovely work!!!
Awesome ! I'm going to try to make some ! Sounds wonderful !

Awesome. These would be awesome as gifts. I'm sure the wedding party will enjoy them.
Love the outakes!
Outtakes are so fun. Lol.
looks great pinman, try using fingernail clippers to cut the fishing line.
Great video and excellent outtakes!
I love outtakes. Lol
You did a great job
Lovely job. Your daughter has put in her claim.
Ceramic fishing line cutters go right through that braid. They are really cheap and make a clean cut.
I liked and subscribed! I’m checking out Lee Hite’s website! Great job! Beautiful wood, beautiful chimes, beautiful teardrop, beautiful sound! (You are funny!)
They really sound gooooood
Thanks!
I really love chimes really like it❤❤❤❤
Love the sound of it.
Thanks.
Nice build, love the sound. think I will try to make one. Carl
Very nice indeed, job well done.
Thank You.
Great video, word of it vice lacquer is the absolute worst exterior finish you can put on something. Boat varnish and boat wax is best
Yes, It has already worn off. I'll be refinishing it this spring I think.
"advice"
Great vid! Gonna make for Xmas present.
A better tone comes from hang glider frame. It’s thin wall and rings really well.
I didn't know wind chimes were so technical to make. I thought you just cut the pipe different lengths and hang. I didn't even think about tuning them.
I always thought that too. Turns out theres quite a lot that goes into it. Who knew!
That's beautiful, I want one!
Make one, it is fun.
You can do it!
