This movie is so perfect and yet so incomplete because of how detailed Joss Whedon's universe was. DAMN YOU FOX. DAMN YOU!

Wash's death increases the tension but it's main purpose in my view is in the next scene when everybody is getting wounded you think as the audience that anybody can die because they just killed Wash.

That was Josh's purpose for killing Wash off. Said so in the commentary. He had to make it feel as if this was a last stand and everyone could end up dead.

"Mal's a very Han Solo-y kind of guy."
Actually Nathan Fillion mentions in an interview how much he liked Harrison Ford's acting, particularly in his willingness to take a punch for fight scenes. So he was very deliberate - in Serenity especially - for the full weight of fights to hit him. That's why you see him fully slamming his face onto the floor in his fight with the operative.
Gotta respect the willingness to take on some pain for a good show.

"I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar" Maybe the most impactful death scene of any character I know, both in how meaningful it was, and how unexpected. I legit had to pause the movie and rewind when I realized what had happened, because I felt almost in shock, I couldn't process the following scenes. God this series was so good.

I attended a Firefly panel at MegaCon a few years ago. Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin, and Alan Tudyk were on the panel. Alan made a comment about the "leaf on the wind" line. He said "You know what's significant about a leaf drifting on the wind? It's already dead."

bigfatcarp93 people don’t like seeing their favorite characters die, so I’m not surprised people call it unnecessary. But him dying makes it so that when Simon gets shot later it really makes you worry if he’ll make it.

Joss loves the sudden unexpected death of a major character. He tries it in virtually every production he's a part of but I don't think any have been as impactful or well done as this one. Maybe because once you fall for one you're expecting it every single time, that's the trouble with a signature trope but in this instance it works perfectly. Everything changes, a sense of shock overcomes the audience mirroring the shock felt by the characters and suddenly the stakes are as real as they can get. You stop hoping for that standard Hollywood happy ending and just start hoping for survivors.

Actor Ron Glass (Shepard Book) was on his deathbed (well the doctors didn't give him long even though he did defy expectations and live for a few more years past when they thought he would) when the film was in development. Which is why in his scenes he didn't really move around much. It was mostly just him standing and doing two-shots and not interacting with many other characters at the time. They wrote it to give the actor an exit, knowing if the movie did get them a second season they would be moving on without the Book character. Glass just couldn't do 14hr work days. The Wash death was more about just doing something to snap the audience into knowing that there were stakes in the film.. That it wasn't just side characters that were being written out. In my theater when Wash died the theater was dead silent aside from an audible gasp from the back. Whedon did such a great job in such a short time building a world that people connected with.

    > Adam Baldwin is related to the Baldwin brothers. The connection goes back to the 1600s. So they're distant cousins. See Adam Baldwin IMDB bio.
    > I love all the references of Firefly and Buffy in the TV series Castle. My favorite is a Halloween episode in which Nathan comes out dressed in his Firefly outfit. His daughter asks him what's supposed to be and he tells her, "I'm a Space Cowboy" and she replies, "That's so five years ago."

  • @bethanycampione3558

I loved the way Wash's death played out because the rapidness with which Zoe and the audience had to move on from such a beloved character's death made me feel like I was actually there. Like I had to internalize my grief (in the same way that Zoe had to) until there was time to experience it safely. I was shocked in the moment, but had to quickly move on from that shock to properly watch the rest of the movie, and when the funeral rolled around and I had the time to think about what had happened, all that suppressed emotion came back and I full on sobbed for Wash

"I am a leaf on the wind"
A leaf on the wind has fallen from its tree, and is already dead. It may not be what Joss intended, but when I head this interpretation it made that line so much more poignant for me.

31:53 "My favorite episode has probably always been Out of Gas." I caught myself cheering YES! Bushwhacked was my favorite for many years for different reasons, and still holds a special place in my heart, but as time wears on I find myself putting Out of Gas in the DVD player more than the other episodes. It feels like the entire series encapsulated in one episode. It's the most feel good episode for me. It's the one with "The Button" in it. That episode is so filled with hope and good vibes even tho it's also pretty dark and suspenseful. Good choice, Aaron!

If you are looking for something short, you should do Dollhouse. It's another Whedon show. Unfortunately, it only ran for two seasons, getting cancelled prematurely, too. But it has some REALLY cool concepts in it - as well as a lot of familiar Whedon contributors: Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, Eliza Dushku, Felicia Day, etc.

    • @CRTRRTinGA
      @CRTRRTinGA Год назад +2

Yeah, well worth the time. It was inconsistent at times (with a few cringe moments tossed in) but that's easy to overlook given the brilliant concept with a spectacular cast. Enver Gjokaj's casting was a stroke of genius. Kranz, too. There really wasn't a weak link on that front. I often think it failed because the concept is a little uncomfortable. What are the moral ramifications of giving up your autonomy willingly if you don't have any way of knowing what kind of abuse you'll be subjected to? How can that be legal? What societal constructs could possibly protect someone who is essentially stripped of the desire/ability to protect him/herself? It may have required more effort than most viewers care to invest.

Just an FYI for everyone, there is a new Firefly comic series starting in November and it is under the creative direction of Joss Whedon. The first arch will be back stories going deeper into each characters past previous to the tv series. Until we can convince Disney to give the show a second chance, this will probably be the closest we all get to new Firefly.

You need to watch the extras on the DVD(s) including the commentary with Whedon and the cast. The extras answer a lot of questions. Yes, they saved and faithfully resurrected the original sets. The ship/set was actually built in two parts - two 190 feet long interconnected sets - one the lower half and one the upper half. They did that at the very beginning of the series so they could capture the continuity of moving through the ship - and yes they did long handheld shots in the series too. The ship was actually conceived as 'the tenth character.' If you don't have the DVDs, the extras are pretty much all on you tube and are worth hunting up.

In the episode where they ask how her Drs visit went and she says same as last year, it was implying that she was still dying. Also, the needle she gets out when the reavers were close was later explained to be a kind of rape punishment drug that would kill anyone who had sex with her.

aside from River Tam pwning in combat, and the falling on your sword scene (and any other good/cool scenes I'm forgeting, lol), my favorite scene was:
(sorry for not knowing their names that well)
the mercenary guy has his knee shattered from the harpoon shot through it
and the group of them just escaped with their lives from the reavers
Doctor guy to River Tam: "Are you alright?"
River Tam: "I think I swallowed a bug"
the mercenary guy: "hey, what about me, doc?"
This was one of the few times in my life where I laughed so hard that I nearly died... from River Tam's bug swallowing line, lol

You guys should watch a series called Farscape. It came out around the same time as Firefly and has a very similar feel to it. It would be a good time.

The comic is called "A Shepherd's Tale" and is written by Whedon's brother. It's phenomenal and doesn't exactly jump around in time. It moves backwards from his death, each scene being a key decision that shaped his life that would lead to the next.

I remember seeing the movie "first", and the whole while thinking, "Why does this look so familiar?" I didn't realize I had seen the pilot and then nothing else. The show was horribly marketed. Now I'm one of the inconsolable fans. Still at least they didn't have a chance to ruin the series. You never know what might have happened. Some of the things Joss says he was tossing around in the commentary could have been pretty bad/upsetting.

They might have hired D&D, and God only knows what would've happened. Somehow Mal would've taken up tapdancing, Inara would be Amish, and Jayne would enroll in finishing school.

The Serenity set was two pices, an upper section and a lower section, there's a hidden cut when they go down the stairs to the guest quarters/living space/medbay. The set WAS mostly disassembled after the show and they had to rebuild it but they did have the two-part complete set for the show as well. I believe they do the same two-shot-with-hidden-cut in the very first episode (the original pilot)

This movie is something truly special, it is pretty much the best example of what can be done when you have a truly passionate fanbase. Just think about what this movie truly is. You have a show that really did not even get a full first season, it was aired in the wrong order and cancelled early. Then they somehow managed to convince a movie studio to pick up a full fledged movie on the big screen. While the movie does not tie up all the lose ends of the show, no way it could with how short the show was. But I think they did a truly amazing job and I really love the movie. And those comics they made are really good.

but he never was discovered. he simply retired after a massacre. he was a high ranking alliance official (general or something similar) and the independance could get all information he saw due to his recording eye mentioned in the vid. so they made a big ambush and many alliance people died. he retired after this and the alliance never knew what happened. they simply assumed he retired because he felt guilty about sending his men into their deaths, not that he was a big part of the trap himself.

Both Wash and Book had other obligations so they wouldn't have been able to do future Firefly movies. That's why they killed them off. They were hoping to do a couple more movies after this one, but it didn't do well enough at the box office. Alan Tudyk has a series on Peacock called Resident Alien. I just finished watching the second season. You might like to check that out.

I'm with you Shane! More than Firefly, TSCC hurts. I think it's because we at least got Serenity. That Sarah Connor Chronicles cliffhanger....ugh. One of my most memorable scenes from TV shows ever is the scene in TSCC is where the kid is reading The Wizard of Oz and they play his dialog over the scenes of John and Derek kill that one Terminator.

The fact that Mal calls Simon and River "guests" on his boat rather than crew (in order to kickstart the plot) proves this takes place in an alternate universe (so Wash is still alive). You can't change my mind.

  • @McHaven07

Actually, the Steady Cam One Take was actually two takes, there's a cut when the camera follows Mal while Simon is following him, then pans back to Simon and the cut is right there. They just didn't have a big enough set.

Idk man, they changed the status quo of the characters' relationships in this. It's like they picked up from where the show left storywise, but with the development the characters had in the half of the season, not the ending. It's just weird to see Mal not caring so much about Simon and River in the beginning of the movie after we know what happened in Arial. I kinda get why this decision was made, but it just don't feel right to me honestly

  • @irishinnish1

I saw a website that had synopses of potential story lines for future seasons of Firefly. One plot was SO dark, I couldn't see it ever airing on TV at the time. The story had (I believe) Inara taking a drug that, among other side affects, could kill anyone she'd have sex with . Later on in that episode (or more likely as a continuing plot line later on in the season), she would be kidnapped by a small group of Reavers. When Mal and the crew come up with a plan to save her, they break onto the Reaver ship....only to find all the Reavers dead :(
Idk if they used that for the comics, or if I'm misstating some of the finer points, but it was a long time ago when I saw it.
Great reactions, guys! I enjoyed the ride :)

Hi, I just recently found your channel, and have been binge-watching. I've seen several RUclips channels now react to Firefly, and that's great, I love Firefly, everyone loves Firefly. But I have a suggestion for a show that I have never seen anyone react to on RUclips.
It shares some similarities with Firefly: they were both canceled stupidly by Fox after one season, and they are both scifi-westerns. The show is called The Adventures of Brisco County Jr, starring Bruce Campbell. It's not available on streaming, but the DVD is readily available on Amazon.
I'm suggesting it to you because you do a lot of tv shows, and maybe you can bring knowledge of this hidden gem to a wider audience.
