Sorry to be so direct, BUT if you guys loved the way the mystery unfolded in this movie, plz throw Case Closed (aka Detective Conana) on a poll one day. It's literally Sherlock Holmes the anime, and every mystery plays out differently. Love you, Guys!
in terms of murder mystery, i’ve heard the phrase “it’s never the person you least suspect or the person you most suspect” but in this case it was literally the person i least suspected AND the person i most suspected.
You know when I first watched this film the one thing that I didn’t like was that Ransom was the obvious suspect but now I’ve realised that the fact he was the most obvious suspect was actually the clever twist and I feel like an idiot 😂
@@NJH01 What the film did well was it made the audience think we knew the whole story of the murder before the half way point in the film. This meant that by the time Chris Evans started to get more screen time in the 2nd half, we'd already let our guard down and were focused on how Marta could cover her tracks rather than looking for clues.
Did anyone else pick up that the mystery of the baseball solving the side plot about the affair? Richard leaves the letter on the table after thinking it’s blank, throws the ball out the window. Blanc finds the ball and eventually trades it to the dog for the broken wood piece. The dog then takes the ball and returns it to Robert’s wife, who returns the ball to her fathers desk and finds the letter left there. Brilliant writing Edit: sorry I wrote this as I was watching the reaction lol
Now that's a good way to do a sequel! Retain the theme and the important character of the story without tampering with the storyline that's already complete! Nice!
I absolutely loves the character of Benoit, charismatic, smart and charming yet mysterious af I would definitely watch a Blanc series, just hopes it will not turn into another the last jedi type sht
I love the foreshadowing in this movie. Like how earlier in the movie harlan said ransom didn't know the difference between a real knife and a fake one and then what happened at the end with the fake knife
It has thematic parallels too about how Marta *could* tell the difference between the 2 medicines when they were swapped, and chose the right one in instinctive circumstances. She also chose immediately after Harlan told her Ransom couldn’t tell the difference between knives. It is also a parallel of Ransom’s aggression not being able to outmatch Marta’s peacefulness, which comes up with the Reversi^1 game. 1; The game they played before Harlan’s demise, although not 100% sure it’s Reversi
Did you notice that everyone in the family had different ideas where Martha was from? Like they really didn't care for her at all and had no clue where she was really from.
Everyone saying Marta’s family is from a different country and saying they were “outvoted” when it came to her attending the funeral. Richard handing Marta his finished plate of cake in the flashback as if she were help. Small little details that show none really considered her “family”
I think Meg at least showed some sympathy for Marta. She scolded the police officer when he asked if Marta was with the "help", and she nudged Walter to offer Marta assistance (before they knew the content of the will). Granted she betrayed her by revealing the undocumented status of Marta's mom, but that was under pressure.
I like that the members of the family sit off to the side of the knife display when they're being questioned, but when they interview Marta she's sitting right in the center of it with all the knives pointing at her head.
Developing more of what types of people they are. LMAO I noticed that off the bat, and thought it was going to be big in the end with like Marta being a liar in the end or something like that
Quickie By Pepe I wouldn’t say overlooked. 2020 Oscars was competitive asf in every single category except Original song (which was weak asf). She would have had a better awards season had knives out competed at the 2019 or 2018 oscars.
@@MrStGeorgeIllawarra have you seen Scarlett's movies? those two performances were widely praised by critics, she's received universal acclaim for her performances
There's a bit of that in Scott Pilgrim vs The World. His role there is more or less a cameo, but its super fun. Especially after seeing him play Cap all these years. The film is worth watching as well. Fun, energetic and unique. Its made by Edgar Wright. Most people know him for making Baby Driver.
I knew Evans had a snarky smartass side to him because he had a similar role with Johnny Storm in the first two Fantastic Four movies. I think he just wanted a role that let him step far away from Captain America and do something different for a moment.
The main reason I loved this movie is it's neat screenplay. Like how Calvin said, "Everything comes around" The ball reaching back at its place leading to Richard's reveal, Nana saying Ransom u r back again already, Hugh did this, Dogs being the excellent judge of character, Harlan playing with his family even after his death, Harlan's portrait changing its expression according to the scenario, The coffee mug My House. My Rules from the beginning is also shown in the end and it goes.... Loved this movie Edit: loved the performances too
Honestly, this should've won Best Original Screenplay. I know that Parasite deserved to win (it's the better film), but the latter had already won bigger awards.
Hospital Nurse calling: "Hello there I am so sorry but Fran has passed away" Marta: "That's great news, thank you we'll be there soon" Nurse: "Wait wha..?"
One huge hint I missed until my second viewing was that Ransom has a stack of New Yorkers on his coffee table, which shows us that he has read the article on Benoit and is a big hint that he’s the one who hired him. I love how every twist in this movie is perfectly set up earlier.
Its also important to note how each of Harlan's kids remembered each of them handing the cake to Harlan. Each of them placed themselves at the center of the story.
One of the sharpest, wittiest and most enjoyable screenplays I've watched in a long, long while! Almost nothing is wasted, each callback is a delight, and crucially it all wraps up neatly.
9:06 the most important line of the movie and I completely glossed over it when I first saw it. She said “you’re back again already?” He was back AGAIN. He had been there earlier.
To Rick's question at 25:45, it would be hard for a prosecution to prove liability since there's evidence that Marta was deceived by Ransom into giving the wrong medication. Aaron begins to make this point. Irregardless of her giving the right medication or doing all the right things, it doesn't matter that Marta facilitated the panic as she was led to believe she gave the wrong medication. It was the deception that caused her and Harlan to panic making Harlan take his own life. Doesn't matter how you slice it, the series of events were caused by Ransom.
My completely non-legal-professional thoughts. I would have to rewatch the full scene, but it seems like there’s a case for negligence/malpractice. As Harlan’s nurse, she has a duty to make sure she’s giving him the correct medication. Of course she can’t actually tell what clear liquid is inside the bottle, but from what I remember, she gave him the medication from barely looking at the bottle and not checking the label. There may be a professional standard that a responsible nurse should always (at a minimum) check the label of medication they’re giving. Because she just automatically gave the medication without checking that it was the correct bottle (ie reading the label) that caused the mix up, which is that caused Harlan to think he was going to die. If she had read the label beforehand, which may be expected/required of a nurse, then the whole thing wouldn’t have happened. If she had read the label, but the medication had been previously tampered with, then it wasn’t her negligence that was the cause of him getting the wrong medication. However, there may be an issue with having the medication easily accessible where anyone like Ransom could tamper with it. Not sure if a nurse’s standard of care would be similar to like a film prop master’s storing of guns, but an issue with the Rust shooting with Alec Baldwin is that the (prop) guns were not securely stored (among other things) and out in the open. I think you could make a case that she, as a nurse, should make sure that no one has access to Harlan’s medication beside herself. She was negligent in that, which allowed Ransom to mess with the medication, and because she wasn’t responsible in checking what she was giving him, she caused Harlan to believe he had received the wrong medication. Even if she’s not found liable in a civil case, she may lose her license…not that she would have money problems. Although, now there’s the issue if whether or not her negligence would prevent her from inheriting the money. Moral of the story, keep medication in a secure place and make sure you know what you’re giving yourself/others.
@@LCDigital92 I'm no legal expert, but it seems like any decent defense attorney would be able to argue against negligence because she in fact DIDN't poison Harlan because she was so good at knowing which medication was which that she didn't need to look at the label. The only reason why Harlan killed himself was due to the confusion brought on by Ransom switching the labels and stealing the antidote I don't think that there are any specific decisions that Marta made that a prosecutor can argue was "unreasonable/irresponsible" under the circumstances. If she read the label, she would have given the wrong dose and killed Harlan, but she didn't and is only guilty of having read the label afterwards. By this logic, Marta is only guilty of having read the label. Had she not been responsible, and never read the label at all, Harlan would be just fine.
@@andywilson5234 Again, I think it largely comes down to professional standards. If it is an acceptable practice for nurses to leave medication out in the open, and if it’s an acceptable practice for nurses to administer medication without checking the label if they’re “so good at knowing which medication” they’re administering, then fine. I don’t know the specifics of nursing standards of practice, but I’m fairly certain that they would be higher than that of a “regular” person. If, for a licensed nurse, her (lack of) actions are not to the (presumably) high level of care required of nurses, then that could constitute negligence and she may be found liable for his death.
@@LCDigital92 As a nurse I couldn't resist answering few questions. It would be be very difficult to bring her to court for this. Even though she picked up "wrong vials", technically right medication ended in the patient. True, it is recommended to check the labels and follow the seven step guidelines but the tampering is taking the base from her guilt. As the movie stated she was the bestest nurse that ever bested at her job and she recognized two clear liquids appart from looks alone. (Yes. I had a laugh). At most she would get a reminder of the protocols but since the patient didn't die directly due to medication, she would not lose her licence. The medication storage claim is very weak to begin with since we can only recommend people how to storage their medication. This is residental care afterall so the property is controlled by the person/family compared to a hospital. It is completelly at the will of the patient/next of kin how they store their high toxic medication and I'm very doubfull if barelly any bother to keep the stuff locked away. It's not responsibility of Martha to bring a safe for the medication, it's 100% on Harlem and judging the visual evidence nothing was done about it. Only thing Martha could be reminded of is in the case cool storage medication is found in her baggie but that would be at most a reminder. After noticing her 'mistake' she did follow the protocol correctly but Harlem cut her off from completing it. If prosecutor is making a stand that she misbehaved and caused panic that made Harlem kill himself... just no. 40% of healthcare workers could instantly be sued if they panicked at critical situation if these were the claims. We are all humans and Harlem did what he did at full state of mind. His attorney even confirmed this part. Over all the case against her would be very weak and nursing related governing body would at most give her a reminder and a warning to be more careful in her job.
she technically gave him the correct medication keep in mind that ransom switched the medication but Marta was such a “good nurse” that she could tell the difference between the two medication without even looking buttttt since random switches the two she thinks she gave him the wrong medication and freaks out also that’s why ransom needs to come back to the house to then switch them back so that it would look like Marta gave him the wrong medication
@@Aardydarling He does. First he tried at 3am but the dogs barked so he left. Then he came during the funeral thinking the house would be empty and actually switched the labels back, and put the Naxelone back.

Fun observation... in 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' Christopher Plummer tells Daniel Craig that even the man who hires the detective should also be a suspect.
Wasn't expecting to love this movie as much as I did, but god damn it's amazing. Ana and Chris both shine, and this is the only film of Daniel Craig's I've watched properly and he did a fantastic job too.
When my cousin and i saw this we didn’t think it would be Chris Evens character because we thought it was to obvious, but it kept throwing stones at us making us rethink it then it was revealed it was him
In most mystery stories there's always gonna be that antagonistic evil-looking guy that is TOO OBVIOUS that you clear him out suspect list completely. "You went from suspect number one to an impossibility". That's what Harlen told Marta. And that's what Rian did with Ransom.
Personally i thought the mystery was rather easy. I loved the whole setting, and the visuals and the acting but the mystery still needs work. But to be fair, i've been watching movies like that since i could remember.
I liked the fact that they had the dogs bark at Chris Evens which tells you who caused all this to happen but if you aren’t paying attention you’ll forget that clue and then causes you to question who did it all over again
Love a good old fashioned “who done it” movie and Rian Johnson executed it perfectly. He’s great when he doesn’t have to do a formulaic big movie studio movie
It's a different setup from the usual whodunnit mystery as well. Because, during act 1, we actually see what happens. We "know" about what led to Harlan's death. Which immediately puts us in Marta's shoes and makes us fully empathize with her, both because she has been shown to be kind and genuine (especially compared to the family) and, thus, want her to end up okay and because we are the only ones privy to the "truth" along with her, so we're right along with her on the ride to try to figure shit out. Classic dramatic irony and tension, the old Hitchcockian bomb under the table with the twist being one of the people at the table knows the bomb is there. And instead of the big twists coming when the hows and whats of the murder come to light (like if Harlan had actually staged his death and it was fake all along, for example) instead it really does come down to the who of the whodunnit and the twists turning back to what we thought we knew and it turning out that, unintentionally, it was a suicide as initially pronounced. Such a fun and charming ride from Rian Johnson here. I love the shit out of this movie.
@@MrStGeorgeIllawarra But that's the thing. We thought we knew. But as the movie went along, and more plot points were introduced... more mysteries were put in place because nothing fully added up until the end of the movie
That’s a good point but I can’t lie, I wouldn’t mind seeing him direct a Spider-Man Hobgoblin detective mystery featuring characters like Roderick Kingsley, Ned Leeds, Richard Fisk, Black Cat, Silver Sable, Yuri Watanabe, Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones, and/or Mayor Kingpin. It’d be fun seeing Robert Pattinson doing a role reversal as the cunning sociopath playing either Richard or Kingsley in charge of Roxxon or Alchemax and having a deep hatred for Wilson Fisk. Just have The Tinkerer redesign the Green Goblin’s tech & build up the new goblin over a couple movies. Maybe first tease him when Spidey is wearing the symbiote suit so he absolutely snaps & nearly kills someone like Scorpion.
I’m still pissed that Daniel Craig wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for this. Let me rephrase that “I Say I Say it just damn preposterous that he wasn’t nominated for this amazing performance, when he cuts loose boy he CUTS loose!”
@@seezar100 Adam Sandler and Craig weren't competing against each other. Daniel Craig was submitted as Supporting Actor. The studio has to submit each actor for specific categories. Only Ana de Armas was submitted as a lead. So Craig was competing against Joe Pesci and Al Pacino from Irishman, Brad Pitt from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tom Hanks in Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and Anthony Hopkins in The Two Popes. Personally, I would have put Craig in over Hopkins or Pacino. (I did see the two Popes. I thought Pryce was excellent, but didn't feel Hopkins was particularly Oscar-worthy.)
@@seezar100 The difference with Best Actor though is, who do you take out? Personally, I would have taken out Leo (in my opinion he's not even the lead; Pitt is); but I also feel Roman Griffin Davis should have been nominated for Jojo Rabbit.
I hope people stop saying Rian Johnson is a bad writer (it's mainly those who didn't like episode 8), he just proved again with this film that he isn't. What a great film, 8/10!!! I can't wait for his next Benoit Blanc story (and whatever else he has in store for us).
Every writer has genres they are good and bad at. Just look at Rowling's attempt with Casual Vacancy. It's clear Rian's strengths lay with Mystery/Thriller rather than Space Opera.
@@misterthedarkknight A space-opéra can't be a comedy ? Never heard of Space Balls ? There was no more comedy in SW8 than in any Prequel film. It was an excellent space-opéra with sad and funny moments.
I think Johnson was just ill suited for an action move he clearly does well with mystery thrillers like this or breaking bad. I know breaking bad has action but that isn’t the purpose of the plot of that series it’s intrigue which Johnson does well. Unlike Star Wars which is more about broad and fantastical conflicts with less subtlety. So I think Rians twists isn’t fit well at least for me in a series that we want to see big hero’s and standard stories in with few changes. That and I think the changes didn’t work even for what he was going for causing the whole trilogy to be thrown into chaos.
@@rubyjulivre1136 According to an article Ransom made the servants call him Hugh to emphasize his distance from them, but I don't know whether that's the case or not. I just thought the way Ana delivered that line was hilarious.
Also btw I’m pretty sure at the very end where she holds the mug saying “my house my rules my coffee!” It was a Easter egg to say that she didn’t give them anything since that mug used to belong to the family.
I find it mildly amusing how most people who haven't seen this only didn't watch it because Rian Johnson "ruined Star Wars." I'm not going into that argument, but never judge a movie based on one of a director's past movies, especially when Rian Johnson did three good movies before Star Wars.
To be fair, most fans who complain about that stuff likely doesn’t watch things beyond Star Wars and that genre fandom and probably didn’t even know Rian Johnson’s film pedigree before Star Wars much like they forgot Kathleen Kennedy had a career before she took over Lucasfilm. Most people’s bubble is only their fandom and they don’t look much beyond that, people’s careers apparently start and end with Star Wars and everything else they did is ignored.

This movie was pretty damn good!! The performances were strong ( especially Craig , Evans and Ana De Armas) and the story was engaging . Rian Johnson’s trademark subversive sensibilities played upon the tropes of the murder mystery aswell as swerving in and out of genres . It starts out as a murder mystery that has a bit of satire , becomes a suspense thriller in which you seem to know what happened but don’t want the killer to be caught but then becomes a murder mystery again by the end . Just so well done ( however , it did drag a bit for me but that’s really it).
I find so wow how they showed how the family doesn't see her as a person, like the way they are concistently inconcistent with where she's from and how they remember things like "I looked at the time" instead of "martha said the time", in a genuine way they just don't see her
I love the subtle genius of this film- the slight differences in details in the memories of different people, the fact that each of them name a different country that Martha is from, the baseball!! Fucking work of art this film is!
"Hugh did this" cause he asked the help to call him Hugh...freaking brilliant 😂 there's not a single detail they throw in that doesn't have significance somewhere
It has some of the best special features I've seen from a studio release in quite some time. Most special features these days are fluff EPK stuff, outside of Criterion. Knives Out special features have got some meat on them.
If you can find them, you should definitely watch the deleted scenes. There's a really good plot that was cut having to do with Walt and his wife and why they were do desperate to get their hands on the inheritance. It includes a good scene with Walt's wife, Donna, and Daniel Craig. Unfortunately, once it was cut, her character got completely sidelined.
A similar thing to the "Hugh did this" "You did this" twist happens in the movie The 10th Kingdom. A character called Wolf is accused of killing a shepherd girl because they heard her yelling "Wolf, Wolf!" when she was actually yelling "Wilf, Wilf!" about her true killer, the town leader Wilford aka Wilf. Its an even better twist there because Wolf looses control and blacks out that night and wakes up surrounded by dead chickens he doesn't remember killing, so not even he knows if he's guilty!
I love how this movie mocks both the super right and super left at the same time with the different family members butting heads with each other. But as soon as all of the inheritance is taken away from them they all put aside there differences to fight it back together in anyway they could.
The thing I love about this movie the most is you are shown everything, all the clues are there from the beginning, but he creates this narrative slight of hand that convinces you to completely ignore them. BRILLIANT 👏 👏 👏
39:26 love that analogy. Me and my cousins would use sticks to play lightsabers or swords all the time, and yea, you been doing that for a while, using ur imagination, you can definitely tell which stick is gonna break or not and how strong or weak it is
I love how Chris Evans portrayed the bad guy in this film. Really goes to show that he can play any character. He's not just Captain America. Brilliant!
When Harlan was talking about Ransom to Marta he told her that a time comes when you don't even know the difference between a prop knife and a real knife. And in the last scene it actually connects when he couldn't tell the difference. He was completely blinded.
1:53 i didn’t even realise this! just one example of how each of the characters remembers the evening differently. one of them remembers ransom affectionately patting his great grandma before leaving, someone else emitted that from memory. they all warp it slightly based on their personalities.
Did anyone else realized that Harlan said to Marta, “Ransom can’t tell the difference between a real knife and a stage prop” in the beginning foreshadows the ending?
great reaction, just wanted to point out that the reason Martha could tell which bottle contained which medicine isn't because of a sixth sense, but because she could tell by the weight/amount of liquid in the bottle. Since she was giving him 100mg of medicine there would be less liquid in that bottle, in comparison to the morphine bottle that she would draw 3mg of occasionally.
I had an idea of what happened as soon as Marta said that she kept her medical supplies at the house, because the thing she was looking for was not there and the guy was not showing the symptoms she described. I just did not know who did it, until a little later. I knew something was wrong, and Marta was innocent, when they never brought back up the dogs barking, and then they did.
We may have a new master of the mystery genre. I know he reveals the "murder" early on, but Columbo did that every week. And every episode was still engrossing.
God guys this movie is so good, even people in the comments can't sing it's praises enough. You guys should watch videos like Screen junkies take on the movie, or every Easter egg in Knives Out. One video I highly suggest, is Just Write's video on knives out.
The best part is how the director makes you think for the entire movie that this renown detective is so stupid and in the end he had the information (blood in the shoe) for all the time but needed a story to understand what really hapenned and played dumb for it.
If you think about it, Marta used the same wordplay Fran gave her to avenge her. She confused Fran's "You/Hugh did this." When she was talking to the doctor on the phone, she said "Doctor, this is great/grave news." which changes the implication of what happened to Fran.
One thing I just noticed is that Harlan said “twenty minutes later I’m seen walking downstairs”. But she saw Harlan kill himself. So it must’ve been at least 10 minutes past the mark of death
LOL I love Rick's little character arc in this vid. Throughout it he gets proven wrong immediately after predicting something until the last second when he yells "PROP KNIFE!"

Yes, minus maybe Meg and Nana.
They are all assholes
I think Meg at least showed some sympathy for Marta. She scolded the police officer when he asked if Marta was with the "help", and she nudged Walter to offer Marta assistance (before they knew the content of the will). Granted she betrayed her by revealing the undocumented status of Marta's mom, but that was under pressure.

Marta: "That's great news, thank you we'll be there soon"

One huge hint I missed until my second viewing was that Ransom has a stack of New Yorkers on his coffee table, which shows us that he has read the article on Benoit and is a big hint that he’s the one who hired him. I love how every twist in this movie is perfectly set up earlier.

Almost nothing is wasted, each callback is a delight, and crucially it all wraps up neatly.

9:06 the most important line of the movie and I completely glossed over it when I first saw it.
She said “you’re back again already?” He was back AGAIN. He had been there earlier.
also he actually said in cafe that he KNOWS that Harlan didnt commit suicide. because he did it.
The only reason why Harlan killed himself was due to the confusion brought on by Ransom switching the labels and stealing the antidote
I don't think that there are any specific decisions that Marta made that a prosecutor can argue was "unreasonable/irresponsible" under the circumstances.
Irregardless isn’t a word.

I know breaking bad has action but that isn’t the purpose of the plot of that series it’s intrigue which Johnson does well.

The “Making of” documentary for this movie is great
It has some of the best special features I've seen from a studio release in quite some time.
I just wanna know how traumatised the doctor is gonna be when he tells a person the patient dies but she says "that's good news" lol
But as soon as all of the inheritance is taken away from them they all put aside there differences to fight it back together in anyway they could.

great reaction, just wanted to point out that the reason Martha could tell which bottle contained which medicine isn't because of a sixth sense, but because she could tell by the weight/amount of liquid in the bottle. Since she was giving him 100mg of medicine there would be less liquid in that bottle, in comparison to the morphine bottle that she would draw 3mg of occasionally.

Parasite beat it, not Jojo. Knives Out was up for Original Screenplay opposite Parasite. Jojo won Adapted Screenplay; it's based on a book.
I knew the line "until you cant tell the difference between a stage prop and a knife" stuck out, and I'm so glad they brought it back at the end
Chris Evans as a villain is so good y'all. 😁
Finally watched it yesterday...
I can always appreciate a film that twists through many turns...
And that Ms. De Armas...😍
“Heat! Like National Treasure!” was such a niche reference and I loved it so much.
When I first heard Daniel Craig's accent I was totally blown out of my mind....he just nailed it!!!!!
She confused Fran's "You/Hugh did this."
When she was talking to the doctor on the phone, she said "Doctor, this is great/grave news." which changes the implication of what happened to Fran.
One thing I just noticed is that Harlan said “twenty minutes later I’m seen walking downstairs”. But she saw Harlan kill himself. So it must’ve been at least 10 minutes past the mark of death
There's honestly nothing better then a bunch of friends just watching a movie and genuinely enjoying
God, this movie is so well written and acted.
I don’t just re-watch movies any more I watch the reactions it’s THE best rewatch ever
This is literally my new favorite movie. I just freaking loved it
LOL I love Rick's little character arc in this vid. Throughout it he gets proven wrong immediately after predicting something until the last second when he yells "PROP KNIFE!"
It is by far the most successful investigative film in a very long time !!! greaty actors and Daniel Craig is fabulous !!!
Something I really liked about this movie was that it was paying homage to a lot of mystery shows or films from the old days. I feel that more movies like this should be popping up on cinema. Thanks for the experience.
