    This channel is going to blow up man! Super informative videos with great comedy and tasteful filming. Please document the whole process. I'm thinking of doing the same thing once I finish schooling and would love to have these videos as a reference when I have to fix that house.

    I used one of these toilets in 1996 in Shikoku when some friends and I were abducted. Fortunately we escaped. I had such a strong feeling that there were bodies in the cess pit that was overwhelming. I told my friends we had to leave immediately.

      Sounds like a crazy story! All I could imagine was a child falling into the pit... scary stuff.

    Love the creativity you put into what could have been an otherwise mediocre DIY video. I have the same style house in Shiga-ken that I’ve been slowly remodeling over the years. Just started on the pit toilet yesterday and replacing with a low flush toilet cause out here in the countryside we don’t have sewer. I’ll keep an eye out for Hanako san. 😜 Looking forward to seeing your other videos.

      Thanks for the positive feedback! Yeah, sometimes DIY stuff can be mediocre at best lol I don't envy you with the bathroom :( But definitely watch out for Hanako lol Curious to know how it goes once finished! Will it be stay a pit of converted to a septic system? Are you doing all the work yourself? I originally was going to do septic but it was a no brainer with a sewage connection at my doorstep.

    I would have hidden some coins in the area under the floor, for future owners to find.

      That's an interesting idea! We all think we will never meet our demise and others will take over our houses but that really is the reality. I'll take your idea and do it somewhere else in the house! Maybe with a letter saying ''enjoy the house'' lol

  • @johnrf554

    Nice work. Thanks for the video. Just curious why you didn't use any insulation beneath the subfloor. Is the winter cold? My biggest concern buying one of these old houses is the cold and ensuring everything is insulated.

    • @DIYJapan
      @DIYJapan  2 года назад

      It's a good question. I felt that the toilet room was far enough away from the actual heated areas of the house for it to not make much of a difference. It's a lot of work to insulate the floor in such a tight space and around all the pipes. The water pipes are insulated though. This room would be hard to heat unless I installed a small electric heating unit inside the toilet room independently. Al the houses I have been in Japan are either too cold or super hot and never have climate control. But I hear ya, I would love for it to be at least heated in the winter... when I do the bathroom renovation, I have considered many options to heat it in winter which might be shared with the toilet room. Let's see! Otherwise, only one floor downstairs will be insulated which is the living room.
