Your video is the most professional, articulate and easy to understand vertigo treatment video that I have found on RUclips, I looked at several others before I tried yours, and I am thoroughly impressed! Again, thank you! I am 62 years old I have suffered with vertigo since I was 19 years old, never as strong as the first time, and over the years have noticed certain things bring it on, although at a mild level, recently, I had an extremely violent attack of vertigo, in the weeks proceeding, I had Covid with mild symptoms yet mostly sinus, followed by extreme allergies, followed by a slight left ear infection, I’m sure all of these contributed to the severity of the vertigo, although, at the point, I was feeling quite healthy and recovered. The vertigo hit on relentlessly!! Your exercises have improved it within 48 hours, and it is very important in your video, mentioning the vertigo hangover, even though the symptoms are not severe anymore, I do feel the blah, very well, and thoroughly explained!

    I’ve had vertigo for almost ten years. Ill feel it all day everyday during the winter, and summer it can but me down for a week and then it’s ‘“manageable.” I’ve spent my life savings visiting every doctor imaginable tell me “there’s nothing wrong with me” and have been to the emergency room probably 100 plus times in which all they do is give me klonopin and a vallium prescription to make me go away cause they don’t care which… yes… gets rid of it but knocks me out the rest of the day. Basically if it’s not the bppv type, then they have no idea how to fix it. I’ve felt everything to being broke from doctors visits, to anxious to suicidal. In fact there was one point it was so bad I was taking Valiums to keep myself asleep and sleeping for weeks at a time. It’s the most awful debilitating illness. I’m only 32 years old but don’t know how much longer I can endure it.

    BPPV can also be a symptom of another condition when there has been NO fall o injury explaining the acute vertigo. See a specialist if the vertigo doesn't go away after a few days, 2 to 3.
    Viral infections, common cold, can also be the culprit. When the virus moves to a part of the vestibular organs (hearing system). Labyrinthitis or Vestibular Neuritis. It has to be diagnosed properly by either an Ear, Nose Throat ENT specialist or a neurologist. Don't go to the emergency room /hospital. They don't have the time/resources for this kind of ailment. Go to the specialist instead, they can do a proper differential diagnosis.

    Great talk on BPPV, most informative I’ve watched. No other video described the possibility for it being bilateral. My symptoms just started last week and I’m on day seven now. I see an ENT doctor in a few days and I have a referral from my primary physician for vestibular PT. Not sure if what I have is related to otoliths or inflammation. If it is from the crystals, would it occur nonstop for seven days? By nonstop I mean when I am ever in motion or moving my head. If I am completely still & focused I have no symptoms. Thanks!

    My Vestibular Audiologist gave me the Dix Hallpike test, when she turned my head to the right it spun round like a top. It was pretty scary. She want's to do the Epley Maneuver on me and I am wondering if there is any medication you can take beforehand that might make things a little more comfortable. I sleep on my left hand side to avoid the vertigo but even lying down in bed makes my head feel unsteady. When I get up in the morning things are still a bit shaky until I start moving around. Do you think this is also a mild form of the vertigo or something else? Any help you can offer would be gratefully appreciated.

    • @MovementFunction
      @MovementFunction  3 года назад

      Joe, the feeling you have in your head getting up in the morning is very common with vertigo and will improve after you do the Epley maneuver (and the vertigo resolves). Try sleeping on a slight incline, about 20 degrees, by raising the head of your bed and/or supporting yourself on pillows. That can ease the unsteadiness at night and the shakiness in the morning. As for medication, unfortunately any medication you take that suppresses the response also suppresses the recovery, but breathing exercises before, during and after the Epley maneuver can be helpful for relaxing your body and helping you tolerate it better. Try the breathing exercise video I have posted on my channel and you can find a lot of diaphragmatic breathing resources with a quick google search. Fortunately, most people need only a few sessions of the Epley maneuver (some only need 1-2!), so the discomfort is short-lived. Good luck!

The dizziness in the morning is also worse if I didn't sleep well the night before. I am a naturally nervous person, but I know I have to go through with it and I will certainly try the breathing exercise video you mentioned.

    But recounting the following experience may come in useful:
    I had several serious vertigo "attacks" which required medical intervention.
    I now have chronic tinnitus.
    I believe the one has to do with the other. This may be true in some, but not all cases, but very probable in my case
    *Look after your ears*.
    No headphones, loud noises, no earbuds to remove ear wax.
    I believe the vertigo I experienced prior to my my tinnitus condition was a warning of the tinnitus to come.

    • @MovementFunction
      @MovementFunction  3 года назад +2

      @ Three Feet - There really isn't a point in trying the Epley maneuver when the vertigo is known to be caused by acute vestibular neuritis and is settling on its own. In many cases, vestibular function returns to normal after the acute phase passes. If, after a couple weeks, you feel unsteady or have other lingering symptoms, then you might consider trying my vestibular rehab video series or talk to your doctor about a referral to a physical therapist in your area. Good luck and healing to you!

    This video is so very helpful, thank you. I seem to get vertigo at night while asleep (I wake up feeling the spinning). My husband helps me do the Epley, I stay upright for 48 hours (sleeping atop pillows at an incline), and then I usually feel better for a few days... but then the vertigo comes back a few days later in my sleep. Any tips? Should I be doing the Epley in the evening, even when I feel fine again, or only when I have vertigo symptoms? Should I try sleeping on an incline all the time (how much? Fully upright?). I've had vertigo (sometimes severe, sometimes mild) four times I'm two weeks and I'm starting to fear that I'll never get better! 😭. One last question, should I start your beginner vestibular rehab exercises when I am feeling better and not having symptomatic vertigo?
    Thank you so very much, your videos are so helpful and your kindness in responding to comments is amazing!!!

    • @MovementFunction
      @MovementFunction  2 года назад +6

      Jessica, you're very welcome and I'm glad this video has been helpful for you. These are excellent questions. In your situation, I recommend doing the Epley every night for at least one week after you stop having vertigo. Also, try sleeping on an incline about 20 degrees every night. Sleeping on pillows works but sometimes becomes uncomfortable on the neck and back. Another option is to raise the entire head of the bed (mattress or frame depending on your bed) using wood blocks/beams as necessary. Also be aware of any movements during the day that might be contributing to the return of symptoms, such as bending your head up or down to reach into a high closet/low cabinets/under the bed, etc., or doing exercises such as yoga that involve a lot of head movement or rapid/jarring head movement (like running). At the same time, try not to become rigid in your head/neck movement as this will only give you a neck ache... Keep your head movement natural in an upright position. Finally, yes, I suggest starting the beginner vestibular rehab exercises when you're feeling better and are free of symptoms for at least two weeks. All the best!

    I’ve had dizziness off and on for a few years- a sense of not being stable- needing a cart in a store, etc . Have been to my dr, an ENT, had tests and blood work and all is well. Diagnosis from family care dr was menopause and anxiety; ENT Dr ruled out anything major (suggestions drink more water, Exercise more etc to combat anxiety and menopause transition symptoms); however, a few nights ago, I sat up in bed to roll over to the left and the entire room started violently spinning. I had to grab onto my pillow for stability. It was terrifying!! Needless to say today I did the test to see which side, tried it on my right and I was ok, did the test on the left and cried out loud, panicked, and hung onto the bed for dear life. The spinning was absolutely awful. I’ve done two Epley maneuvers for the left side. I’m also taking over the counter Meclezine. Could the off balance and dizziness I’ve experienced the past two years be vertigo and the crystals? Is there anyway to make this go away. It’s awfully debilitating feeling “off”. It comes and goes, so I never know when it will strike. Typically I don’t do the Epley. Do you recommend I start doing the test and then Epley for normal off feeling days?

      Jennifer, yes I recommend doing the test and then doing Epley on the side that is indicated by the test. Since the Epley maneuver moves the crystals back to where they belong, doing the maneuver resolves the issue for some people and they experience long lasting relief. For others, vertigo continues on/off due to crystals moving, multiple canal involvement or other vestibular diagnoses. I suggest looking for a vestibular specialist for further evaluation. VeDA (Vestibular Disorders Association) has a great directory on their website: vestibular.org/healthcare-directory/. Also, I worked with one person who had excellent results after going to the Newport-Mesa Audiology Balance and Ear Institute in California: www.dizziland.com/. All the best to you!

    Beth Wagner makes outstanding and very helpful videos. I am grateful because it has helped me. That being said, I would like to clear up a minor error in this video: the word proxysmal is incorrect and and does not mean that vertigo comes and goes although that is true. The correct word in BPPV is paroxysmal which means a sudden and dramatic attack.

    • @MovementFunction
      @MovementFunction  2 года назад

      Randall, I'm glad my videos have been helpful for you. Thank you for pointing out my misspelling. I am not able to correct it in the video, but I added a link to helpful information about BPPV from Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA) and the Mayo Clinic. 'Paroxysmal' has several definitions. VeDA defines paroxysmal as 'sudden, brief spells', which is more descriptive than what I said for sure. While BPPV may feel like a 'dramatic attack' in severe cases, not everyone experiences it that way. In fact, more people describe Meniere's disease as a 'dramatic attack' than BPPV. Including that description in this video would possibly lead to greater confusion instead of greater understanding of BPPV.

    • @MovementFunction
      @MovementFunction  3 года назад

      Nazli, besides the ears, these symptoms can come from sinuses, the brain, blood vessels, nerves, even dysfunction in the muscles and joints of cervical spine. And sometimes it is not clear what the cause is as imaging and testing can't detect all possible causes. I suggest seeing other doctors, including finding a physiotherapist in your area for an evaluation to determine the cause of your symptoms and to start a treatment plan specific for you.

      @@LastTrump7 Doing the Epley maneuver when the vertigo is caused by Meniere's typically doesn't help much but also won't make it any worse. Physicians use several different tests to differentiate between BPPV and Meniere's disease. It's also possible to have both at the same time. Meniere's treatment is about management to minimize the severity and frequency of vertigo, such as reducing salt intake. Vestibular Rehab has been shown to be helpful for some people overall (but not during an acute episode of vertigo).

    I was wondering if you had any thoughts on covid and BPPV? I initially was diagnosed with BPPV almost a year ago, since then I have seen a vestibular PT, had an MRI, seen a neurologist, etc. I recently had about a four month duration with no symptoms, I was back to exercises without limitations and feeling like I've perhaps seen the last of BPPV for at least a few years, as I understand there's reoccurrence.
    Two weeks ago I hopped on my first flight to see my family and simultaneously got covid. And now, the most mild symptoms have returned. They are specific to when I'm inverted laying on my back, so if my head is off the side of the bed, or if I do exercises that require me to arc backwards, head down gradient. Do you think this is because I flew? Or because I got covid? I can sleep normally, function pretty normally but my eyes do twitch during the epley (almost barely visible to my husband, but he notes he does see it happening). I know it's vertigo, but it feels less severe. I still want to treat it properly and I hope to get over this so it's not always on my mind. That feeling of falling after months of having no issues is heartbreaking.
    Anyway, thank you for your thoughts.

    • @MovementFunction
      @MovementFunction  Год назад +2

      It could be because of the flight or the covid infection and likely because of the combination - a perfect storm. Any illness that causes sinus congestion and inflammation can trigger a recurrence of BPPV. Add congestion to the pressure changes in flight and it's more difficult to equalize the ears, which could also contribute to crystals coming loose. I'm glad the symptoms are more mild than the initial occurrence, although I know any recurrence is discouraging. Hang in there. I suggest continuing to do the Epley to fully resolve the vertigo. If possible, I suggest delaying your flight home until you are fully recovered from covid and vertigo is gone. Consider taking decongestants before the flight as a preventative measure.

    • @MovementFunction
      @MovementFunction  Год назад

      I recommend following your physio's advice because they performed an individualized evaluation and they are giving you specific advice for your condition. If they are treating you in the clinic, they will give you the best treatment and advice for you when you return to see them. Many physios do not prescribe doing the Epley at home because the treatment they provide in the clinic is adequate to resolve the condition. I advise avoiding rapid, repetitive head movements. In my practice I've found that advising someone 'not to move their head' leads to excessive stress and strain on the neck. But in severe or recurrent cases, there might be a need to restrict head movements to a greater degree. Again, I suggest following the instructions from your physio.
