I dealt with vertigo for 6 weeks….it was horrible and I was working with my PT using the epily maneuver ……it helped but it didn’t go away…I started doing some extensive research….I’ve always been a huge Edgar Cayce fan…..he recommended water hydration…….within 2 days of drinking at least 72oz of filtered water daily it was gone. I’ve continued to stay hydrated and haven’t had another reoccurrence. For anyone suffering……what do you have to loose…..water is free and it helps to thin the viscosity of the fluid in the canals.
You articulated my post acute vertigo sensations perfectly, i.e., after a vertigo event, medium to fast vertical head motions cause moderate dizziness/nausea. Continued vertical head motions bring back full blown vertigo attacks.
I used to be an Airline Pilot. BPPV struck me one day and my pilots license was revoked. Can't have BPPV as a pilot once diagnosed for life. It's career ending for me. I'm looking to reskill because I'll never be allowed to fly ever again because there is no cure and Epley's don't guarantee prevention. In one morning, my life changed suddenly and forever.
@@anthonyjinks89 So sorry to hear your story … not only for the loss of your career, which is horrible, but also that I know pilots just love to fly - blessings to you in your quest for a new livelihood
It will come back. Be prepared. At the smallest symptoms: STOP DROP AND ROLL. Begin the epley moves at the first signs of vertigo. It only takes a few minutes. It is also good to have your favorite utube video saved so you dont have to go searching for it while the world is spinning. Keep in practice!! Do the moves once a week so you don't forget how to do them. You may go a year or 2 or 3 between vertigo attacks. They can be severe!! Stay in practice. They often flare up at 4 in the morning and you will have no one to help you. In your sleep you flop around and that will start the vicious flare up. I have been dealing with BPPV for about 20 years and this is what I have learned. Be prepared!
Excellent advice! Especially about practicing the maneuvers and having a favorite video saved. I might have to make a video featuring your advice :-) Want me to give you credit in the video if I make it?
I've had two episodes of BPPV, 7 years apart. Came out of nowhere both times. First time had the Epley Maneuver by a PT and it resolved after one visit but it made me so, so sick! Second time (just recently back in May) went to my chiro and he was able to resolve it much more gently and effectively just by maneuvering my head, without all the sitting up, laying back down nonsense that got me sick the first time. The frustrating thing is it came out of nowhere. Now I'm trying to stay hydrated, sleep with my head elevated a bit, and taking a Vitamin D supplement. Praying it stays away! It's awful!
What ever works! One chiro session worked for me... hydrating is good but not relevant, for me at least...am well hydrated and will float away if do more ...these various maneuvers all are great
Yes it is. Mine is triggered by looking down. My daughter can’t drive with her learner permit because it triggers mine bad. I am triggering right now with it.
@@nancymicklatcher117 Don’t forget to take K2 with your D3 - the D3 is important for several things, but one is that it helps your body absorb its calcium - the K2 directs the calcium into your bones instead of your arteries
The half somersault manuever is by far the best thing to try to stop vertigo. I had severe vertigo for over 4 weeks. I tried medications and the epley manuever and nothing worked. I was miserable. I went to work and had to hold on to things when walking because the dizziness was so bad. Then someone told me about the half somersault manuever and it worked! I had to do it several times, but it literally saved me. Give it a shot!
I have had BPPV for years, last time I did the epily maneuver, I thought I was having a stroke, couldn’t lift my head for 4 hrs, with continuous vomiting, so have learnt to live with it now.
I had my first flare two months ago and I called 911 thinking I was going to die. Vomited for hours as well with the room on spin just as long. It’s was so bad that now I have to see a shrink for depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress. I’m praying I catch it faster next time, as I did have signs.
Retired physician here...your videos are excellent and your explanations very clear. I wonder if I could ask your opinion this: a patient has documented right post-canal BPPV,,,positive DH test and responded to Epley. Has had several subsequent episodes of transient vertigo with vertical head movements...DH intermittently positive; Epley repeated only when DH positive. But...now has reproducible vertigo (x15sec) after sleeping for an hour with right ear down WHEN moves head to neutral position (so looking straight up while still supine). Nystagmus appears to be up-beating (though difficult to be sure without the goggles etc). Question: Still posterior canal or now horizontal canal?? Tried the diagnostic test for horizontal BPPV and no vertigo or nystagmus... so, confusing... Appreciate your thoughts!
That sounds very confusing... I haven't seen this type of presentation before. With the head in neutral, I definitely wouldn't expect posterior canal involvement, as both canals are flared out at 45 degrees with the head in neutral (no gravitational effects). So I'm wondering if it's horizontal canal BPPV at this point. Have you tried the Supine Roll Test yet? Let me know how this turns out!
My first episode was just over year ago. Horrible feeling that i obsessed over and fear everyday! I saw neurologist and diagnosed BPPV. He used Eppley maneuver and it did stop the dizzyness. I used maneuver with success. Several months later I had recurrence, went to Dr., labs done. My Vitamin D was Very LOW. I started supplements. I believe my symptoms and recurrence has diminished since taking Vitamin D.
@@donnasherwood283 Yes, I agree - I take all 3 - the K2 I take is the mk7 - I’ve heard that a large percentage of people are Vit D deficient - doctors should always test for that with normal bloodwork

D3 is a pro hormone not a vitamin and it regulates close to 300 biochemical processes. in my youth parents used to force us to drink milk in fairly large quantities . Most i know dropped it from diet as soon as they could for issues of vertigo high doses of D3 + K and magnesium eat up the excess calcium in system. Yes americans are very deficient due to processed foods and being led down a road that dairy is bad for you. ergo need for supplements. I used Metagenics D3 + K a tiny gel easily swallowed at 10K a day but depending on blood serum levels you may not need that dose check it out on next blood draw they formulated at 5L as well.
Thanks for this, my mother experienced another flare-up of this yesterday (was about a year since the first episode - so it was a big shock to see it recur). She responded well to the Epley both times it's happened, and It's always been triggered by her getting out of bed, so I think we're going to focus on keeping her sleeping upright for the foreseeable future. It's amazing (in a sad way) how these tiny crystals shifting out of place can cause such devastating symptoms.
To prevent BPPV recurrence, consider the Epley or Gufoni maneuvers for effective treatment. While daily Brandt-Daroff exercises haven't shown significant benefits, maintaining good vitamin D levels may help. Some studies suggest oral supplementation with vitamin D3 and antioxidants could reduce relapses. Avoid triggering positions and consider vestibular rehabilitation therapy to improve balance and reduce symptoms.
I only have this problem as I'm waking up. Thankfully not very often. But it hit me hard this morning and scared me to death! All I did was start waking up and rolling over. My head was a spinning top and I freaked out screaming. It stopped when I laid on my back for a few seconds. I have a lot of migraines and ear ringing.
No but it hasn't happened since. I think I just woke up too fast and my body took longer to catch up with my brain. Another weird thing that's happened was me realizing when I was half asleep one time I'd left the heater on and running out to turn it off. As I got up to it suddenly I couldn't move and felt frozen when I got to it. Then my heart started pounding and I had to go back to bed or I would have had another episode. This happens Everytime I get up before my body is ready.
@@moonfire41im dealing with this right now. So scary. I got up to use the bathroom, came back to bed and it started. I screamed for my husband to call 911. It literally felt like I was in a washing machine ( even though I've never been in one). Ems called and it just kept happening. Im home now and scared to move my head.
Just had it three days ago, woke up in the morning with dizziness and it’s last about 3 hours, took Dramamine then vomited 20 minutes later for hour, along with high blood pressure I will try drinking more water thx for sharing
I was exercising woke up next day with mild dizziness when I moved. Last Sunday I laid on my right side and had 2 vertigo attacks first one stopped after I got up and second lasted 6 hours with inability to walk and being sick. I ended up at the hospital was given fluids and zofran which helped the sickness and was diagnosed with bvvp. Fast forward this week I went to see my doctor which she said just keep doing the epley exercises and gave me a nasal spray and ear drops as my ear also pops. On Thursday I had a mini vertigo spell while trying to put the ear drops in and got scared I ended up finding a physical therapist. He performed the epley on me and I had vertigo for about a minute each time. He said that isn't common but to just hold the positions a bit longer. After Thursday I'm having extreme anxiety attacks, dizziness, migraine, brain fog and sickness feeling I also go from feeling like I'm tilting backwards to forwards randomly like at the moment feel like I'm tilting forward even laying down. I tried laying on the effected ear and no vertigo just anxiety so I'm not sure what else to do. I'm scared it won't go away and I'm gonna be stuck like this forever and the sickness makes it hard to eat like at all.
I feel for you, just know it will go away. Go see an ENT right away. You don't need to live like this, but know it will come back and just have a plan of action.
Thanks for the tips. I had BPPV 6 months back. My son is a doctor at Mayo Clinic. I was super nervous thinking I have some serious disease with my head spining. He mentioned to me “Mummy don’t worry it’s BPPV- I then looked for the answers myself thanks RUclips and Google. I did Epley and got rid of spinning head. Now I got the recurrence again. Not as pronounced but not good feeling. I am thankful to you for “what not to do” I was thinking that my neck may be the culprit- so rotated my neck. That’s going to stop. I have adjustable bed so will incline tonight. Thank you long haired help sitting somewhere!!
I had my granddaughter help to do the Epley after a few weeks of suffering. We watched RUclips to see how to do it. Yes i threw up on 2 positions but felt slightly better afterwards. It took about another week to recover. My longest bout was 9 weeks. Couldn't drive, couldn't do anything and kept my head in a certain position to be able to function, any other movement had me nauseas. Saw the neuro, ENT, had scans, but it was finally when the ENT said it could be coming from my neck and I saw a chiro who cracked my neck that i recovered. Chiro though, thought that the sudden movement he performed was similar to an Epley. I now have a physio on speed dial when it hits. It's a horrible affliction.
I couldn't recover using epley and found the Foster method on RUclips. The video is 10 years old but so effective. I did it 6 times at first yesterday, then a few more times until bedtime. Felt great at bedtime and good this morning.
Its been 1 year since my 1st vertigo experience..when it hit i thought i was dying..my head spun for 7 days as if someone threw me out of an aeroplane. started suffering from panic attacks for a few months. its now the 3rd time it hits me out of nowhere this time the spinning only lasted 2 days.. been 4 days now and still feel dizy when i move my head around but its getting better. dont have any great advice.. but i have moved from SA to Aus and i feel like im linking all of this to stress and maybe IBS which flared up a year ago as well. Its been the biggest life change to me ever. Didnt think me immigrating stressed me so much until this started happening. Haven't been active with training or stuff to reduce the everyday stress of our lives.. i have chronic neck and shoulder pains from .. i guess underlined stress. IbS and gastritis linked with every occurrence. Dont know if it affects my ears as well or can an inflamed stomach lining cause such bad vertigo?
Wow, that's rough! It sounds like your system is inflamed in general with the gastritis and IBS, and the added stress definitely doesn't help. While you don't likely have BPPV, you can certainly still have vertigo and pain triggered by these stressors. Are you having any luck reducing your pain and stress now? And have you ever considered dietary changes to reduce your inflammation?
Do the Epley moves every day whether or not you have symptoms. This is my best advice after living with it for 20 years. You will be so practiced that will be like checking the mail every day.
@GordonPhysicalTherapy Hi doc.. it's been about a month now.. my balance seems 95% most of the time. I have started excersizing and skateboarding again. Rollerblading too.. trying to force my body to deal with spinning falling and jumping up and down.. if its my ears hopefully the crystals will be forced back into place.. some days i feel normal as can be and other days i feel like im not in my own body as if its in 3rd person view. I eat relatively healthy foods. Dont eat much during the day, normally more at night. My stomach feels good. Stress feels better. I do notice my ears feel stuffed some times. And as if theres cotton in my brain.. slow and stuffed. I saw a doctor 3 weeks ago and he thinks its due to "glue ear" and stress. Had an ear syringe.. and doing blowing excersizes now and again for my ears.. almost like equalizing under water.. dont know if it helps but will see in the future i guess.. just sucks when it happens. It makes you immobile and takes 2 to 3 weeks just for some normality again. Dont think i have ever felt 100 percent again since it happened the 1st time. Maybe im more aware of it or maybe overthinking every symptom i feel. Afraid that the eply maneuver will trugger it again.. lol but i will give it a go every other day. 🙏
My vitamin D levels were below 20 and I was continually having BPPV. The Epley did help and has helped every time. Sometimes I just have to do it three times but the vertigo goes away. I have had problems with this most of my life.
@@RamaLakshmi-d7e It worked for me after three tries and then I had no problems afterwards. The vertigo was gone! I later on after about 6 months had another mild vertigo spell but did the Epley again and it went away and hasn't returned. I think the vertigo came back because I was moving furniture and boxes around and items under my bed and my head was moving in all kinds of directions not normally something I do.
Ok, so this is my 3rd experience apparently having BPPV over a 10 year period, which no one previously could tell me what I had. They just told me to take an antihistimine and deal with it. This time I woke up with my head spinning after turning over in bed.Today my ENT specialist stated what they believe I have is BPPV, which is interesting since I had a battery of tests done 6 months ago because I felt like I was floating all the time--no results came from those tests other than I had extreme nausea. I guess having hot and cold water pumped in your ears will do that. I also have tinnitus and hearing loss (I wear have hearing aids) and some brain fog. To add to that I have a vibrating bed, I do pilates, resistance training, Tai chi and ride my bike almost daily. I've changed my diet over a year ago by eliminated grains, sugar, junk food, and alcohol while adding healthy fruits, vegetables, drinking lots of water, vitamins and supplements to include vitamin D and B complex. This is all so frustrating especially knowing this will probably an ongoing issue for the most part regardless of how healthy I attempt to be. I will say that I appreciate all the advice and comments because knowledge is always a good thing to have. I'd appreciate any additional advice you may have.💙
I had a terrible case of vertigo right after I started bouncing on an exercise rebounder, it was bad for 3 days. Once I started doing the semont plus I started seing improvement
I have BPPV caused by the gentamicin operation in 2000 where double the amount of gentamicin was used but now I have also developed cervicogenic vertigo which requires exercising head movements ….I feel between a rock and a hard place.
@@peaceandlove544 I am delighted to hear it. I was part of the original experimental operation in June 2000 and have had vertigo ever since. I was told by an ENT specialist that this had happened to all who took part but that now the op. is done on the NHS using a fine needle whereas with the operation I had our eardrums were opened, then a sponge soaked in gentamicin was placed again one of the inner ears ‘windows’ then the eardrum sewn back. I had to pay privately to have it done. The good thing is that, I understand it is now done as routine which is excellent news.
It’s good for your bones too - the D helps calcium absorption & the K2 directs calcium to your bones instead of your arteries - don’t want calcified arteries !
Good advice for general health and for some residual symptoms. However, if you have BPPV, you'll still need to treat it with the appropriate repositioning maneuver.
My vertigo started immediately after I sat up from doing “plough pose” or Halasana in my yoga class. I have done the same pose many times before without causing vertigo. Coincidence or the probable cause? Will be scared to do it again now. The Epley manoeuvre stopped it though but not till a week later when I luckily discovered your video. Thankyou so much!
Mine was first diagnosed when I was in my early 30s, about 30 years ago, after I tried to learn jiu jitsu. Turns out doing rolling ukemis is a bad idea when you have BPPV. Heh. After that I have had occasional attacks, most often connected to that rolling over in bed move, but they haven't been particularly common, and I have learned to deal with them. They usually pass by themselves after something like half an hour, if they don't doing those head movements can help. I have probably have had the tendency at least from a fairly young age, I have, for example, never learned how to ride a bike. I have sometimes wondered if falling off a horse head first may have had something to do with the whole thing. I had a helmet, but since the top of my skull was the first part of my anatomy to make first contact with ground, well... the critter made a sudden stop, yanked its head down and bucked a bit, and the saddle slid a bit forward, and I was trying to hang on to the reins but being just barely over 10 years old at that time that just kind of propelled me forward and over the horse's head. I don't remember being all that dizzy at that time, and I climbed back on after a few minutes, but still... 🤔
I’m suffering terribly. I wanted to avoid the Eply maneuver after my primary Dr. performed it once. I am being treated by a chiropractor specializing in Upper Cervical methods. (NUCCA). Have had minimal results. I just saw a vestibular therapist who did the Eply maneuver twice. It brought on such intense and terrifying dizziness. I’m scheduled to go back tomorrow and am absolutely terrified, not knowing how I can possibly get thru it.
After suffering from years I discovered the solution. A Korean research project found that taking vitamin D will prevent it coming back. After taking vitamin D after finding out I had low levels, its worked.
I take d3 regularly except not in the past month. I had an EXTREME episode lasting 2 days of spinning and constant vomiting with each maneuver. I doubt my d levels dropped that quick! 🤔
But D in high doses can harm so be careful. If you don’t have a good diet maybe take a good quality multi vitamin mineral pill suited to your age and sex. This would avoid overdosing.
Thanks for your advice. Is helpful. In the case of using vitamine D, I read that you have to use the combination of vitamine D along with magnesium. Other wise the vitamin D is not affective. What is your opinion about this?? Gr. Edwin-Holland
Greetings, Thank You for all of your info on BPPV, very educational and helpful. I did the Epley maneuver yesterday for the right side and it seemed to help, did the test this morning and no spinning on right side, is it possible to have residual lite dizziness/vertigo, uneasy feeling after the main vertigo has been resolved, I feel much better just a bit light headed. Thanks again.
Glad you're feeling better! Yes, the residual feelings of vertigo/unsteadiness are completely normal. Check out my video on "X1 viewing". It will help!
Usually I recommend sleeping elevated for 2-3 days, and that's enough for most people. However, if you continue to have regular bouts of vertigo after sleeping, you might consider sleeping slightly elevated on a more regular basis.
Hello, While taking face massage, vibrator was used on ear by mistake, after that it was felt that liquid inside ear got disturbed. After taking maneuver done from expert physician, No spinning happen from last 6 months after sleeping on both ears. 1. Should i consider that issue got resolved? 2. Little imbalance what to do for that? 3. Can I again play cricket or football? 4. This was not agewise ear crystals loosening, it was accidental, will it recur?
It sounds like you just need to do some VOR/gaze stabilization exercises to get your inner ear to function at a higher level. After that, you should be good to return to normal activities, Just be on the watch out for the BPPV to recur, and then treat again as needed.
Hi! All this is very helpful. I see some mention of yoga postures and that some folks have had to quit. I've been doing yoga for five decades and don't want to give it up. What postures should I stay away from, or movements? Thank you so much!
You don't necessarily need to avoid any yoga poses, unless they're causing vertigo (such as Down Dog). If you're able to clear your BPPV and head movements no longer cause symptoms, you should be able to make a full return to yoga. And then just watch out for symptoms in the future and re-treat your BPPV as needed (as recurrence rates are somewhat high).
May try vitamin D. I was diagnosed with this a month ago and I get occasional spells. I do lots of bending now that I have a little one. Makes sense why I’m getting dizzier more often now that you say this
Vitamin D might help. You might also need to perform the Epley more often. And do your best to crouch, squat or kneel down when you can instead of bending.
@ I’ll be more deliberate! I am not consistent, but I am a bit more aware of how I get down low bc of a lower back injury. But I’m not consistent when picking up the kiddo. I’ll try D and more Eppley. I’m in WA so D deficiency is common
My bed has a vibration function. I was using this for pain relief from a back injury. Had 2 diagnosis of BPPV in 3-month period after that. Not sure it's related but wondering if anyone else experienced this? Is my bed shaking the rocks lose in my head?
I don’t have the answer to that, but I really think it could contribute to the problem - I had vertigo a while back & my electric toothbrush made me feel a little woozy - just thinking about my bed vibrating kind of gives me anxiety - lol
I believe it may … I have one of those beds and within a year having it (coincidence?) … my first vertigo attack occurred. It was bizarre and scary… I was ill for a week with nausea, spinning, and my gait affected … walking in diagonals since my balance was completely off. It went away somehow and did not reoccur until 11 years later… possibly prompted from excessive hours working at my computer … continuous hours at a time over many nights (volunteer work for the greater good)… plus working long hours during the day and long drives to/from office. Since then, it’s occurs intermittently - thankfully, I learned of the Epley maneuver - and it corrects the condition. Sometimes it requires repeating the exercise for it to work. I wait a day to repeat it if it doesn’t take the first time.
Yes, the vibrating bed could certainly increase your chances of having BPPV. You might consider avoiding it until your vertigo calms down for a prolonged period.
Yes, feelings of general "vertigo" can be caused by those things, but positional vertigo that follows the presentation of BPPV is usually pretty easy to spot. Cervicogenic vertigo is a little harder to diagnose sometimes, as positional changes can mimic BPPV.
Few months ago, positive ageotropic horizontal canal in left ear. Did Gufoni 2x and nystagmus stopped. Since then I test negative during supine and dh, but when laying down flat on left side, body and head, I have slow horizontal nystagmus that lasts less than a minute? How do you know what to do now? No nystagmus on right side.
I don't have a specific recommendation for how much vitamin D to take or how often to take it. It's a fat-soluble vitamin, so some people recommend larger doses (like 20,000 IU) taken less frequently, and some people recommend smaller doses (like 5,000 UI) taken daily.
The epley maneuver cured my vertigo 8 years ago after having it for a year. But ever since I've had tinnitus - is that related? Anything i can do for that?
Tinnitus is not typically related to BPPV. It's more commonly associated with Meniere's Disease. There's some advice online for supplements and herbs for Meniere's, and you can also consult an ENT.
Enjoyed your informative video. I have a couple of questions. Is the 'crystal' a crystal that is part of the ear makeup, or is it a collection of 'debris' that collects together forming the crystal? A good friend of ours got it at about the same time I got it, and we had flown for roughly 4 hours recently before the eipisode. We were home for 2-3 weeks before the vertigo hit. We both did some maneuvers, he did the half somersault and I did the lying on bed with head back etc. We both cleared our problem. Curious if it was the flying and/or a virus we picked up (there were 4 of us traveling together) On another note, I did get a vertigo virus that lasted about 14 hours after going into a portable bathroom trailer that had no a/c or ventilation in the hot summer and it struck me within about 6 hours. I went to an ER the next morning and everything was fine physically with me, and it dissipated later that day. But that virus episode was dizziness in general no matter what I was doing, sitting/lying down. Thank you.
Viruses can definitely cause vertigo. The crystals I refer to are normally occurring in the inner ear, they just don't belong in the canals. One single crystal can theoretically cause BPPV, although it seems more likely that it's a collection of crystals and debris.

@@GordonPhysicalTherapy thank you I have my first appointment January 13, and I’m on the waiting list although I’ve had vertigo most of my life. I’m still going to see an ENT because it seems like a lot of things have changed in the past 30 years.
@fergie250769 I have dealt with vertigo for years, intermittently. After last episode, it came upon me after a bad sinus infection. My vertigo lasted 3 to 4 weeks, off and on. Pt did epley maneuver, then my PCP suggested meclizine, perhaps to clear inflammation in ear canal that might have lingered after sinus infection. It worked! I've been vertigo free since epley, then meclizine !
Hi, Second bout of Vertigo over about a month's time. Both seemed to be triggered by a massage followed by brain fog, and feeling weird- then a yoga pose gives way to the vertigo. Once in down dog, and this last time on my back in happy baby. Epley seems to stop it. But have felt off all month in between events. Am i just not getting the crystals back into place? Why would massage seem to contribute?
I thought I had BPPV. It took 6-8 Eppley Manuevers to allegedly get crystals in place. The manuevers were done over the course of three visits. My neurologist said it should never take that many manuevers to clear crystals and that one visit is usually all you need. Thoughts?
Great question! Once in a while, it can take multiple days and Epley treatments to clear the crystals. And other times, it works right away (like a miracle!). So your experience sounds normal to me.
When I first got vertigo, the initial room spinning only lasted about 20 seconds, but after that, for 4 months, I had this really weird swirling feeling in my head - I went & had brain scans, heart tests, etc & by the time I found a physiotherapist, he said the crystals can get stuck to the ear canal - so maybe that’s what happened with you - on my first appt., it induced the room spinning again, but gradually seeing him, I got better - it was really bad for 4 months, though - the dizzy, swirling feeling combined with killer migraines & really loud tinnitus - there was no position that I could get away from it some days - I really don’t know if I will ever feel completely normal again, but I can live with this - it’s a terrifying feeling, though -
If you have pain in the occular region, back of neck, like a tension headache or migraine but only on one side and your dizzy 24/7, is that vestibular migraine from neck or is that bppv? My doc said the neck vertigo can be treated with shockwave.
@@GordonPhysicalTherapy I'm being treated for SI joint pain with shockwave (pressurewave). Specifically, the issue is dorsal SI ligament and the sciatica notch on my right side. I had a session on my mid back down to my sacral/pelvis area on a Friday. Saturday and Sunday I had stomach pain. I'm almost positive it's a response from the shockwave. With the SI joint pain, it has caused lat pain and tightness on the right, as the lats are a pelvic stabilizer. This could be key information later. I also have a prior neck injury from years ago, c5-c6 bulge and c6-c7 also has a left herination. So on that Saturday, I drank. Wasnt too drunk. Sunday. I still have stomach pain. I was a tad dizzy. Momentarily. Thought it was because of a hangover. Maybe, maybe not. I looked up light cardio to get over hangover faster. I went on the stationary bike after 8 or 9pm. Didnt pedal fast. But I went a while. 60 or 90 minutes. I was feeling good and even dancing and moving my head on the bike. Now heres the kicker. I got off the bike immediately. I read that continuous cardio machine workouts can cause vestibular migraines. Throw in I drank the night before, dealing with shockwave response, probably was dehydrated and even more dehydrated after the bike (I wasnt thirsty for water so I felt like I didnt need it), and I got off immediately. I wonder if I gave myself a concussion from being hungover and getting off the bike immediately. Soon after, I went to lay down I was very dizzy and has virtigo, something I never had before. I had to lie on an incline and couldn't move my neck. I could feel it was on my right side. My right neck. It was very tight, especially around the ocular region. Later when I saw my regular chiro, she noted that my neck was unusually tight, and her opinion was it's neck virtigo. It's been almost 4 days since this started and I've progressed where I can lay down flat and on my left side and the vertigo episodes have minimized. Bending down or turning my head upside down triggers it. My main thing is the dizziness on my right side and I think it's all coming from my neck and traps and I wonder how much of it is related to lats, if I also need to work on the lats. My plan is to see my shockwave doctor for an evaluation and get treated. Get trigger point therapy injections. And go see my MAT/MET specialist who treats vertigo and neurology. I feel like a neurologist is not going to tell me anything new at this point. This feels like a muscular-skeletal issue with a neurological component but it's concerning that this is the first time I've ever had this vertigo and this one sided dizziness. I'm trying to follow the principles ive learned from my si joint treatment which is it's as much a neurological/CNS issue as an injury and I need to destress. But I admit this dizziness and vertigo is concerning and I hope it can subside sooner than later.

Hi. Thanks for ur video. I had horizontal BPPV. Basically it was in left posterior canel and i thought it was in right and did epely manuer for right and it made the spinning worse and threw up 2 times and didn't eat anything for the whole day. After 5 days I went to ENT whlo then reffered to a vertigo center where they put up some VR kind of device and did multiple testss ans finally convoluted its left horizontal canel. They did manuer and it was gone. Noe its been 15 days after the treatment but I still feel dizzy but no spinning. My question is does BPPV occur because of continuous driving? Im still very nervous Bout turning while sleeping and bending forward. Also I suggest ppl to just visit an expert to identify the correct canel and get the manuer done there itself instead of self doing as I m still struggling with dizziness even after 15 days
@@angelajangula47 I get occasional dizziness, I feel good while driving but when I stop driving I get dizziness. Usually it goes off when I go for a long walk and cover my ears. I guess I have vestibular neurites which has triggered BPPV as a secondary symptom. Doctors say it will take months or years to heal
No, BPPV doesn't occur due to continuous or frequent driving. However, if you're still feeling a bit dizzy or unsteady, the driving can make your symptoms worse.
@@GordonPhysicalTherapy Thanks for your reply. Now Im 90% cured with dizziness occuring sometimes. I have vestibular neurites which I got to know 2 months back. Im doing vestibular rehab everyday and its getting better
Is it possible for it to reoccur in a young and healthy person? I had this when I was 25 and cleared after just a few days and there's no reoccurance until now (I'm almost 30) but I'm worried that it might reoccur some time in the future due to its unpredictable nature
I’ve had this for years. It happens several times a day. It’s incredibly frustrating and scary. I’ve fallen. I get nauseous. I walk with a cane because falling sucks.
I recently had a period of vertigo for 2 weeks, the first few days being the worst. The symptoms pointed to BPPV. I’ve seen a physio twice and he did the epley twice. The vertigo has now gone - it was gradually fading over days. However I still have a ‘whooshing’ in my left ear, slight ringing and it does seem a bit muffled. I’ve had this on and off for a few years. Could it be anything else? Also now have a cold including laryngitis so don’t know if that’s related!
If you're having auditory symptoms such as whooshing and ringing, you can have something else like Meniere's Disease. I'd recommend seeing an ENT if it keeps bothering you. Good luck!
I have MS and not allowed to do epley. Will bppv eventually go with proper hydration vitamins rest and watching movements plus meds? I get seizures cant do any epley. Got an inner infection snce a month and was gven wrong antibiotics snce bppv never went but i do sleep upright but still get floating random attacks. I dont thnk its purely bppv.
Often, restrictions aren't prescribed post treatment due to research not showing it significant being helpful. Why do you give restrictions? Just curious.
The vitamin D supplement mentioned here involves a balanced use of vitamin D3, Vitamin K2, and Magnesium. Vitamin D is an excellent calcium transporter, and the crystals are calcium carbonate. Without Magnesium, Vitamin D supplements are ineffective. Check with your doctor or pharmacist to get counsel on the proper balance among the three.
Do you know why some BPPV episodes would clear on their own within a few days? I’ve had episodes on and off since 2014 and a couple of my attacks have disappeared on their own without treatment in 2-3 days
Good question! Two things can happen: sometimes the crystals probably float back to where they belong on their own, and other times it's possible that they dissolve. Those are the theories :-)
Yes, sometime antihistamines are prescribed to help with the symptoms of vertigo, such as nausea and motion sickness. However, they don't actually treat the cause of BPPV (the cause being the otoconia moving in the canals).
My question is.. is there something u can do like weekly or daily to prevent vertigo? Ive had it for 30yrs or more. Just all of a sudden bam yr dizzy as hell & sick for days. Vitamin D & water seems to be what most of the comments are saying. Thank God for the internet & being able to communicate with others for advice. The drs are only in it for the $$. Its shows by theur homes & cars. But the internet drs are giving advice for free. Maybe making $$ from their youtube chl instead of big pharma !
The internet certainly is helpful! And if people make a little money sharing good advice, good for them! Water and Vitamin D are important for prevention, as well as good nutrition and some other B vitamins. If you're having true BPPV, there isn't a lot of long-term prevention. The short-term prevention is to avoid certain positions for 2-3 days, but after that there isn't much to do except know how to treat it quickly if it comes back. I hope that helps!
@@GordonPhysicalTherapy thank u for the reply. I'm just living with it & dealing with it. Thanks for sharing & actually doing the job of a real dr. Helping people get healthy!
Can flying cause vertigo? Never had this before but the other day after a very early flight I came home and napped and woke up to dizziness and this terrible thing ! Dont want this to happen again! 🙏🏻
I'm not a huge fan. I've seen them prescribed to treat BPPV, which doesn't seem to do much. After treating BPPV, I prefer VOR exercises, and other dynamic balance exercises.
I did the Brandt Daroff on the recommendation of my doc, with my first bout of BPPV, twenty years ago. He told me at the time that I will likely need to do them in the future at some point. It worked, and I had no issues until last year. Now I have occasional problems and use them.
@@pamlyon8176 oh that's interesting thank you, do you know which side / canal your crystals are dislodged? I find it so hard to get through the dizziness in any position that sets it off to be honest! So the brandt daroff fills me with dread as it is so time consuming!
@@pamlyon8176 Oh that's interesting to hear it worked for you! How did you manage that level of vertigo so regularly? I think the move is supposed to be done for 30 mins a day (10 mins x3 times a day for 2 weeks?). Which is nightmarish for me haha! Especially if it didn't work. I know it can also be used to desensitise. Did you ever know what side or canal yours was in?
@@cassiafriello5570 The first one was severe on both, i believe brought on by a fall. I did the exercises twice per day, three reps, I think. Took awhile. Don’t know why it took so long to come back. Now it comes and goes on one side or the other. If I sleep on my right side and it happens, I guess that it’s on the right. I can’t say that I keep it under control, except that I’m careful about how I move my head. No extreme tilt, like looking sideways under the bed. Don’t sleep on my right, if it’s there, etc. I am terrible about staying hydrated. I wonder if doing that would help, like someone else said. Good luck to you. It’s a miserable situation.
Ive had BPPV for years. Have frequent attacks - worst thing I’ve ever gone thru. I also have had several concussions - which probably doesn’t help. Had a bad bout last month and here I am again. Groan. I had a slew of PT for concussion/vertigo/speech, etc - and was advised to do the Epley up to 3 times in one setting (it is BRUTAL). I’m pretty much wiped out for 3 hours afterwards. You can continue to do the Epley at night (probably so u can rest) for up to 2 weeks. So I am very confused as to when to stop. One Day? One week? Two?
@@JaceShoemakerGalloway I’m not a doctor, but in my case my doctor suggested I do it until it was gone, and then an additional day or two to make sure it is completely gone for good. He also said to wait about a week and try the other side because sometimes you might have issues in both sides but feel better after doing just one side and think that it’s all over, but because the other side isn’t fully cured the symptoms might linger. It worked for me. But, even if the vertigo is gone, you might still experience mild dizziness for a while. It’s been about 2 months since I completed the maneuvers and I finally started to feel fully recovered about a week ago. It’s different for everyone though. It also depends on what canal the loose crystals are located. I believe there is a specific maneuver for each scenario. Epley is most commonly used, but there are some exceptions.
@@AngelRodriguez-lp6zh Thank you for your help. I appreciate it. Well, I’ve been dealing with this for years. I was hoping to get clarification on how long u can do the maneuver after you feel a bit better? For me - when it is bad - I am completely out of commission for at least 3 hours after doing the maneuver. After one bad episode, my PT gal had to walk me to my car. I was a MESS. I was terrified of driving home (I should NOT have) - and didn’t move my eyes or head and somehow made it home. When I got out of the car - I walked like I was drunk. Weaving all over the place. It was awful - worst episode I had ever experienced. After 3 hours, started to feel better - slowly - but was wobbly for days. Every single time I have an episode - I worry it will be as awful as that one was. With all the advances in technology - I cannot believe they haven’t found something else to help take care of BPPV/vertigo….
The vitamins can help overall, but if you have BPPV, you need to get the crystals (otoconia) out of the canals. Have you worked with someone who treats BPPV yet?
@@GordonPhysicalTherapy I'm finally seeing a physiotherapist & she used the Semont manouvre which helped but the dizziness returned a few days later. She said that I should sleep on my back but I can't as I find it so uncomfortable maybe I'll try sleeping in a chair. Thank you for your reply.
Just to say our UK doctors aren't trained in nutrition. So don't bother to ask them unless you have one who has taken the trouble to study the effect of nutrition on health . Go to a naturopath or buy books or do your research online.
That's an excellent piece of advice! Thank you for sharing!
Ty for sharing
Ty!
You articulated my post acute vertigo sensations perfectly, i.e., after a vertigo event, medium to fast vertical head motions cause moderate dizziness/nausea. Continued vertical head motions bring back full blown vertigo attacks.
Thank you for sharing. I need to start drinking more water. 👍🏻 😊
Thanks for this video. I was diagnosed with BPPV in 1998 and it has recurred at times ever since.
You're welcome!
That's horrible! I had no idea that one episode on BPPV could cost you your license and your career as a pilot...
@@anthonyjinks89 So sorry to hear your story … not only for the loss of your career, which is horrible, but also that I know pilots just love to fly - blessings to you in your quest for a new livelihood

Sir i want to know you told the airlimes yourself ?how did they find it out that you are suffering from bppv?kindly reply

Sounds like you had cervicogenic vertigo, at least that second time around. Glad to hear the chiro treatment worked!
That's horrible!
I believe my symptoms and recurrence has diminished since taking Vitamin D.
nake sure it is enough do not take some massive initial dose and the D has to be with K in formula and taken with magnesium. good luck
@@donnasherwood283 Yes, I agree - I take all 3 - the K2 I take is the mk7 - I’ve heard that a large percentage of people are Vit D deficient - doctors should always test for that with normal bloodwork
@@Melody-285 in the latitudes where sun is potentially quite limited there is no choice.
Thank you for the suggestions on how to mitigate recurrence following an episode. I appreciate it!
My pleasure!
It really is amazing how much trouble the tiny crystals can cause... keeping your mom upright for a few days sound like a smart plan.
Good advice!
Same!! This is terrible
That sounds awful! Have you tried to diagnose it yet with the positional tests?
No but it hasn't happened since. I think I just woke up too fast and my body took longer to catch up with my brain. Another weird thing that's happened was me realizing when I was half asleep one time I'd left the heater on and running out to turn it off. As I got up to it suddenly I couldn't move and felt frozen when I got to it. Then my heart started pounding and I had to go back to bed or I would have had another episode.
If you found a PT who knows how to treat vertigo, I would go back for a follow up and see what they can tell you. It should help!
How are you now bro?

Glad this helped! Good luck in the future!
I'm glad the chiro was able to help you! Thank you for sharing your story!
Have you noticed any overall improvements since supplementing your Vitamin D? Or do you still have low levels?
Aren't you facing the side effects of Epley manuer for few days? Is it working with you instantaneously?
@@RamaLakshmi-d7e It worked for me after three tries and then I had no problems afterwards. The vertigo was gone!

I watched the same video. I went to Walmart and they had K2 + D3 combo vitamin bottle by Spring Valley brand so I bought them.
I would definitely test for BPPV and then continue treating with the Epley or Gufoni until it resolves. Good luck!
Unfortunately. I have heard that one should refrain from all inverted positions if you have vertigo
Thank you for sharing your story!
I'm sorry to hear that! Hang in there... it should get better with the right treatment.
After suffering from years I discovered the solution. A Korean research project found that taking vitamin D will prevent it coming back. After taking vitamin D after finding out I had low levels, its worked.
I drink dmilk every day and I still get it 😭
I take d3 regularly except not in the past month.
Vitamin D can definitely help with vertigo, although it won't fix BPPV.
@@monicafur Can i please ask you, is it milk with d vitamin ?? Thankyou
Thanks for your advice. Is helpful. In the case of using vitamine D, I read that you have to use the combination of vitamine D along with magnesium. Other wise the vitamin D is not affective. What is your opinion about this?? Gr. Edwin-Holland
I have had recurring BPPV since 2021. It’s doing my head in that it keeps ON coming back 😩
Are you successful treating it when it does come back? And any idea why you've had so many episodes?
Greetings, Thank You for all of your info on BPPV, very educational and helpful. I did the Epley maneuver yesterday for the right side and it seemed to help, did the test this morning and no spinning on right side, is it possible to have residual lite dizziness/vertigo, uneasy feeling after the main vertigo has been resolved, I feel much better just a bit light headed. Thanks again.
Glad you're feeling better! Yes, the residual feelings of vertigo/unsteadiness are completely normal. Check out my video on "X1 viewing". It will help!

How do I know which ear is causing the Vertigo?
Hey has your vertigo gone away?
By doing the two positional tests: Dix-Halpike and Supine Roll Test.
Should one continue to sleep elevated from this point on to prevent vertigo from happening again? Thank you.
Usually I recommend sleeping elevated for 2-3 days, and that's enough for most people. However, if you continue to have regular bouts of vertigo after sleeping, you might consider sleeping slightly elevated on a more regular basis.
Hello,
While taking face massage, vibrator was used on ear by mistake, after that it was felt that liquid inside ear got disturbed.
After taking maneuver done from expert physician,
No spinning happen from last 6 months after sleeping on both ears.

Thank you so much for your reply.
You are really great
What about Meniere’s? I’m on diazide , it seems to help. i worry bc my balance is off.
Meniere's and BPPV aren't treated the same way, although it's possible to have both.
Vertigo can be caused by BP, cervical/neck strain, blood pressure, meds, TJM, etc.
Yes, feelings of general "vertigo" can be caused by those things, but positional vertigo that follows the presentation of BPPV is usually pretty easy to spot. Cervicogenic vertigo is a little harder to diagnose sometimes, as positional changes can mimic BPPV.
Thank you for this info!
My pleasure!
Hello , just purchased vitamin d , 20,000 iu on the packet it says take it once every 10 days but for vertigo do you take it once a day please advise
@@GordonPhysicalTherapy Thank you for clearing that up. I am definitely over my vertigo after doing the head back maneuver! Thank you again!

Hi,
Second bout of Vertigo over about a month's time.
Before doing the Epley, did you do the Dix-Halpike test to see which side was involved? If so, what were the results?
Would you suggest someone who’s had bppv not become a scuba diver?
Have had over 20yrs. Really bad been every where no answers
No relief at all?
I thought I had BPPV. It took 6-8 Eppley Manuevers to allegedly get crystals in place. The manuevers were done over the course of three visits. My neurologist said it should never take that many manuevers to clear crystals and that one visit is usually all you need. Thoughts?
Great question! Once in a while, it can take multiple days and Epley treatments to clear the crystals. And other times, it works right away (like a miracle!). So your experience sounds normal to me.
When I first got vertigo, the initial room spinning only lasted about 20 seconds, but after that, for 4 months, I had this really weird swirling feeling in my head - I went & had brain scans, heart tests, etc & by the time I found a physiotherapist, he said the crystals can get stuck to the ear canal - so maybe that’s what happened with you - on my first appt., it induced the room spinning again, but gradually seeing him, I got better - it was really bad for 4 months, though - the dizzy, swirling feeling combined with killer migraines & really loud tinnitus - there was no position that I could get away from it some days - I really don’t know if I will ever feel completely normal again, but I can live with this - it’s a terrifying feeling, though -
you will get relief - I once had it for 6 mos. - before I learned of the Epley maneuver … 🙏🏻🙏🏻 which fixes it.
Does anyone know whether rebounding on mini trampoline can dislodge the crystals in the ear? Thanks.

It's possible, yes.
If you have pain in the occular region, back of neck, like a tension headache or migraine but only on one side and your dizzy 24/7, is that vestibular migraine from neck or is that bppv? My doc said the neck vertigo can be treated with shockwave.
Yes, that certainly could be a vestibular migraine (or "cervicogenic dizziness"). Doesn't sound like BPPV. What's causing your pain and headaches?

How do you know which ear canal is affected? I always sleep on my side
You diagnose the canal and the side with the Dix-Halpike test and the Supine Roll Test.
Is it possible for it to reoccur in a young and healthy person? I had this when I was 25 and cleared after just a few days and there's no reoccurance until now (I'm almost 30) but I'm worried that it might reoccur some time in the future due to its unpredictable nature
I just experienced the exact same. 😞😵💫 it seems every 6-7 years it repeats.
Yes, this happens quite a bit. Once you have BPPV once, it tends to come back later at random times.
Hopefully you either know how to treat it now or have a PT you can get into quickly when it does happen!
I’ve had this for years. It happens several times a day. It’s incredibly frustrating and scary. I’ve fallen. I get nauseous. I walk with a cane because falling sucks.

It's hard to explain in writing, but I detail it out in my video about "how to diagnose horizontal canal bppv". Please check it out!
Good luck!

@@kathleenhowe8134 Yes I am since 2014

No, you don't treat vertigo caused by Meniere's Disease with the Epley Maneuver...
@@GordonPhysicalTherapy thank you. Is there any treatment for that type?
Along with the 10,000 IU of Vit D3 you need K3 and Magnesium for maximum absorption.
Good advice!
What about taking a antihistamine?
Yes, sometime antihistamines are prescribed to help with the symptoms of vertigo, such as nausea and motion sickness. However, they don't actually treat the cause of BPPV (the cause being the otoconia moving in the canals).
Does anyone know why runny nose can trigger it?
Not specifically... do you have a sinus or ear infection?
I work bending up and down all day. What can I do then? I use a wedge pillow is that good
Try to minimize the head movements and squat/crouch whenever you can.
My question is.. is there something u can do like weekly or daily to prevent vertigo? Ive had it for 30yrs or more. Just all of a sudden bam yr dizzy as hell & sick for days.

Can flying cause vertigo? Never had this before but the other day after a very early flight I came home and napped and woke up to dizziness and this terrible thing ! Dont want this to happen again! 🙏🏻
I am wondering the same thing. Mine occurred on a cruise ship after a flight. Flying has really bothered my ears since I had COVID a year ago.
Is there much benefit in brandt daroff exercises? I have read mixed evidence!

@@cassiafriello5570 The first one was severe on both, i believe brought on by a fall. I did the exercises twice per day, three reps, I think. Took awhile. Don’t know why it took so long to come back.

See my other comments... I'm glad it worked in the end!
My doctor suggested I do 3 maneuvers a day for a week until I no longer have symptoms. Are you saying that would be incorrect?
That's good advice as long as you're doing the correct maneuvers. Also, once you clear the symptoms, you should stop and let everything settle.
With all the advances in technology - I cannot believe they haven’t found something else to help take care of BPPV/vertigo….
can you fly in a plane ? I keep thinking what if that happens on a airplane.
Exactly...
Yes, you should be able to. The pressure shouldn't affect the movement of the crystals, if you have BPPV.
HAD IT 9 TIMES A YEAR FOR OVER 49 YEARS, DO I NEED TUBES
Do you know what's causing it?
I have been taking vitamin D & B12 for years & i've had BPPV for seven months so I don't think it helps.

Thank you for watching!

Yes, you should be, just proceed cautiously.
What direction does the nystagmus beat towards?
Haah...I did vertical head movement..that was the culprit..
BPPV → Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
Yes, thank you!
Is medicines worked like vertigo medicines?
Meclizine 25mg is prescribed for Vertigo..... Urgent Care Centers can write a prescription for this if you can't get to your Primary Doctor
Betahistine dihydrochloride definitely works, but it is unavailable in the USA.
So we can avoid epley by being careful and taking meds?
Does it have side effects? Can it be used for ppl like me who cant ttolerate epley@@stazym69
Just to say our UK doctors aren't trained in nutrition. So don't bother to ask them unless you have one who has taken the trouble to study the effect of nutrition on health . Go to a naturopath or buy books or do your research online.
Good advice! It's about the same here in the States.
