    Add Full color graphics to 3D Printed parts!
    In this week’s project, we’re hydro dipping 3d printed parts.
    Works on moving parts!
    Images can actually wrap around 180° - so you can get some nice details on the sides and edges of your parts. We can even apply graphics to mechanical moving parts like this print in place, no bearing fidget spinner!
    Hydro dipping also know as Water Drape Film, Water Transfer or Inkjet Water Slide Decal Transfer, is a post-processing technique that allows you to wrap graphics around objects. So with this method, you can add some pretty cool textures and full color graphics to your projects.
    Hydro dipping is commonly used on machined and injection molded parts, but we found it also works great on 3d printed parts. So you’re able to add high quality textures and graphics without lots of post processing. It even works with visible layer lines that you get with 3d printed parts.

    There's a paper called Computational Hydrographic Printing, that describes a method to apply perfect textures of 3D models to their 3D printed counter parts using hydro dipping. The algorithm basically unwraps the texture intelligently for printing in a way that when the object is dipped precisely by a mechanical arm, everything aligns well.
    Just thought someone here might like to know that

      That would be amazing for someone with either a very large hobby budget, or a company to use in manufacturing. We'll have to do it manually, however. And you can do it accurately, to a point I would think.

    The part with the majora mask and the ink running, i think that looks really nice, almost like a hand drawn waterpicture

    I am happy to see that people are being told what hydro dipping actually is. There are so many videos of people actually swirl painting their fidget spinners but they say it's hydro dipping. Also,(i might be wrong) i am pretty sure that the activator is made for the film that you buy premade. I have hydro dipped a few nerf blasters using hydrographic film that i got online and it worked well with the activator, and it wouldn't work without the activator

    I had no idea you could do hydro dipping at home! Oh man, I need to reconsider some 3d printing projects I had shelved for aesthetic reasons.

    I have no idea if this works on my intended project for 2 reasons. 212degF is way too hot to touch (for my purposes.....gluing a handle to my work piece is both impossible and not a good idea), and secondarily, you need to continue submerging to get full adhesion so the water presses the ink against the work piece thru a combination of pressure due to head and hydraulic pressure from buoyancy. So I need both a tank that's about 1-2 feet deep, wide enough for 2 hands and a sports ball, and not too hot too touch. Ideas? I'm thinking less heat and a catalyst spray.

    Error? You show getting water from the tap that should be 100c (212f). That's boiling hot! perhaps you meant 100f (~38c)? Ive been trying this at home and my tap water seems to hot causing the ink to dissipate quickly.

    • @cristholveck5318
      @cristholveck5318 6 лет назад

      I tried it at 100 F, then 150 F, then 200 F......nada. not hot enough to melt the plastic.

    • @paragraphics
      @paragraphics 5 лет назад

      Nick is exactly right! 100c is way too hot... It's only necessary for 38c water if you are in a high yield production environment that requires speedy dissolution of the PVA film. Otherwise, room temperature water is just fine. PVA = Poly Vinyl Alcohol Also the main ingredient in Elmer's white glue.

      Well, if that's what you ordered you bought the wrong material. Pva Film is what after market window tints are done with along with vehicle wraps etc. You need Water Transfer Film. Maybe you do need to learn how to Google - and Ebay!

      I put "PVA FILM PAPER" into ebay and the first link I got was to this: goo.gl/EQ3ZqD
      Which is the correct thing, so he is correct. Now you have the link.

      I only find paper that you must use sprays and lay direct on the object…

    • @monkeyjuju7441
      @monkeyjuju7441 7 лет назад

      OmegaCO you can buy it on pedal parts plus, or at a lot of hobby shops as this stuff is used to apply water transfer decals to model cars and stuff. This isn't the same as real hydro dipping film, which does indeed require the activator to work properly. otherwise your part won't push through the graphic.

    • @chrisscott3349
      @chrisscott3349 7 лет назад

      Yes. His process is incomplete and misleading. Since he uses no paint on the part and no activator on the ink, the only thing holding the image on the part is the water soluable PVA residue. Sweat from your hands will hydrate this in a few minutes. The original poster knows this and removes any negative comments about his bogus process. Watch some other videos on the hydrographics industry and see for yourself.

    Wait, "hot" water, or "boiling" water? You say "hot," but then show a caption that says 212F/100C, which is the boiling point. The video shows someone getting hot water from the tap, which would be 140F at most. Clarify?

    Does this work with laser printing, or would the PVA melt to the fuser rollers?

    • @gbegerow
      @gbegerow 7 лет назад

      I did not test it but PVA ususaly has a pretty low melting temperature. Making it temperature resistent would also prevent it from dissolving in water. So unless you have a spare printer...
