Could you do a layout or design video for coffered ceilings? Just wondering how you figure the mathematical formula for dvividing the ceiling space into your tray, to figure out what goes where to snap your lines etc
That’s what I was thinking as well!😀 Just way too much wood being used for a visual effect. I’d be looking at some faux wood product to hang. Saw some on another channel. Light and airy so not too much weight hanging. Get the same look just not sure where he is going with the 2x8’s 🤔 I’ll keep watching and find out. A good reason is right around the corner.
On the coffered ceilings what is the length of your blocking? Neat tip on using a pencil mark. I have learned so much from watching your videos. You are a great teacher! I am sure you are a mentor for future trim carpenters.
I’m a glazier both on the rough end and finish end so I love watching tricks of other trades because I can apply it to what I know or understand what was done before me or what will be done after me great job man. 👍

Because a compressor is much quieter right? No hassle battery-powered nailers are the way to go. Not all make that noise either I have a couple of Ryobi nailers that are quieter and more reliable than my air nailers.
@@-KIMISAFOX Air compressor noise drives me crazy! Dragging hoses around, having them twist up, get caught under ladders, scuff trim on the outside corners... ugh. Not to mention I was up on a walk plank with a 16g hooked to my belt. Someone walks by and gets hooked on the hose. Damn near trips and yanked the gun right off my belt. It fell and broke. Could you imaging if it didn't unhook? It did pull on me but not enough to cause me to lose my balance thank God! Anyways I like you love my Ryobi battery nailers... I have 2 pin nailers, 2 18g, a 16g and a 15g. Love them all!
You every consider building your framework out of plywood? From a cabinet makers perspective seems like it would be more cost effective/ cut down weight/ and still be plenty strong for a decorative element. Obviously would require a little more work ripping up the ply, but I think would be just as effective in the end. Maybe that’s not economical for u, but I would prob go that route. Just a thought. U do good work man!
How do you decide on your proportions when laying this out? Since it’s not symmetric - do you follow any rules of thumb for getting a great appearance.

Is there a ratio to the depth of the coffers to the size of the room, and the hight of the ceiling? I have. 10x12 room with 10 feet ceiling. How deep should the coffers be, about? And how wide/thick should they be? Thinking about the # pattern with no frame. Something modest and simple yet nice. Thanks.
We just put nailer strips around 2x2 and build boxes and nail them to nailers on ceiling, way cheaper, lighter, I'm not really sure why would you need such heavy and strong frame for it

We do similar framing but rip the framing 1 1/2 less than the finish trim boards. Then 45 the corners and everything looks like one piece of wood. Curious to see how you finish it out.

I think he has a high tooth count (Trim) saw blade in the miter saw. Not a ripping blade. Running it all the way through will cause it to overheat and warp which will cause the lifespan to diminish.

Cool project. You’re obviously doing the type of work that God built you to do. When you’re picking out framing lumber try to avoid heartwood. Those are the boards where you can see the center of the tree on the end. I worked on large tracts, condos, and apartments for about 13 years and I found that about 85% of the twisted studs I replaced were heartwood. I didn’t read all the comments so please forgive me if this is old news.
Love the video, the details you provide and the final outcome is excellent. I have a question for you. I'm very interested in putting a coffered ceiling similar to what you've done. However my drywall is installed on resilient channel. I'm assuming you know what that is. so my question is how do I install the coffered ceiling since my drywall is not fastened to the trusses? Do I just crush the drywall between the resilient channel and the Truss? Don't think that's wise. Also what concerns do you have when you're installing on a ceiling where the vapour barrier is being punctured? I am from Canada your drywall and insulation codes may be different.

But for a guy who watches with headphones for audio it's a bitch. However, it only took two cuts to realize you dropped the audio levels whenever you cut! Can u make a video on your modification on the dewalt stand? I’ve seen video for the 2 close to the saw, for the crown molding stop and/or just support. Have made wings in aluminum etc and planning to buy that dewalt stand and put them on. Have the gravity stand now and it’s kind of weak. your solution looks pretty nice and simple, but I am interested in the outer ones, and how sturdy they are. Do the saw mounts snap on to the plastic end on the telescope arm? It looks like the plastic end has the same profile as the aluminum frame on the stand itself. Best regards
He did that late last year (I'm pretty sure). If you go through his library, you'll see him building it out. If you scroll through, you should be able to find it easily enough.

Enjoy your channel, always pick up something useful. Question though - why use 2x instead of 1x to frame the coffer? It's not structural in any sense, and of course your 1x still yields 7-1/4 on the width if that is the dimension without ripping. The 2x weighs just that: 2x the weight of 1x. In fact, would seem that part of the finished coffer would suffice for some of the framing material, whether it's clear pine or poplar (if being painted) or some other species. Must be a reason, curious to know. Thanks.

I just did my ceiling in December and using a thicker wood is way easier to work with than a thinner one...I had to learn the hard way. I'm doing another room and this is exactly how I was planning to start it (Just with 2x10 boards). Can't wait to see the finished product.

I must admit, I didn't really price the 1 x vs. 2 x material and it looks like the price is higher for 1 x ... go figure.... as for being easier to work with 2 x pieces, I am not sure I agree. You can easily screw thru the 1 x in to the 2 x stock. Anyway, it is a good video.
And... having seen Part 2, my mention of weight was to ease the physical lifting of the unit to the ceiling. I am 70 yrs old and not as strong as you young pups.
He put out a video quite a while back where he talked about it. I saw some on a display rack at (I think) Lowes. I took one home with me and now it lives on my tool belt. It's very handy. I took a look, the name on mine is "C H Hanson" and "pencil pull". He ought to put this in his on-line store. (a few minutes later...) I put the name into google and it showed up on the Home Depot web site.

You measure the ceiling first, then you develop whatever layout you want.

when we did this type of ceiling we installed 2x's on ceiling then used 3/4 ply to build the boxes, comes out a little cheaper
I do it similar but with 1xs for the boxes

How do you manage to keep all the openings square? It must be a nightmare if its off slightly especially when trimming it out. Great video....
