The Comics of Garth Ennis

- Ennis followed the same path as other british writers like Alan Moore and Grant Morrison, both in his early work for anthologies like 2000AD, as in eventually jumping the pond to write American comics. He came to prominence with his run on Hellblazer, became Vertigo's best seller with Preacher, earned equal praise for Hitman, and became the definitive writer for Marvel's Punisher. What for many would be a full career merely scratches the surface of Ennis's bibliography. These are the works of one of comics greatest minds.
Top Ten ranks as follows:
10 - Phantom Eagle
9 - Chronicles of Wormwood
8 - War Stories
7 - Hellblazer
6 - Punisher
5 - The Boys
4 - Punisher Max
3 - Hitman
2 - Punisher Born
1 - Preacher

Garth is one of my favorite comic writers. Always thought some of his stand alone stories would make great films. He can sew up a story ending better than many writers. I know his most well known work is his outlandish stuff, for good reason. But when he wants to he can write some of the most human moments I've ever read in comics. All of his war books are great. Hitman will have have a special place for me. How it transitioned from a buddy crazy hit of the month romp, into a deep character study ending in tragedy was incredible. You felt like you lost real friends in that book. And just hands down THE BEST take on Punisher. I'll always stand by the thought of adapting his MAX run into a hard show, it would blow every other version out of the water. And damn, Preacher for me was the book I grew up on. It influenced me at just the right time in my life. And that moment you realize after all the insane violence and storylines that the book is really a love story is just powerful. I think the show may have came out just a few years early. It started ok, but fell apart by the rushed ending. If Amazon has gotten to it a little later, it may have been better. Their handling of The Boys has been incredible. Invincible is looking like it will shape out nicely. I can't wait for the big moments later in the series. Different writer, I know. For another video right? Preacher was one of those books that expanded the idea of what a comic book could be. Some of the most profound stories I've ever experienced from reading or film have been from comics. If you think about it, humans have been telling stories with pictures since we were drawing on cave walls.
I couldn’t agree more. His more violent stories tend to get more attention, but even they have a depth to them that is rarely seen. His Punisher wasn’t just about wanton violence, he went through a lot of work to make him realistic.
@@comicbelief The point of his Punisher is that Frank is no one to idolize. He's insane and has to kill. The man is no hero. That's an awful big point that flies over the heads of too many people. I'm a huge WWII nut, and his war comics could be some amazing movies.
@@blytheguy7510 I’m actually working on some videos by genre… crime, fantasy, sci-fi… Ennis is the undisputed master of war comics… but he’s rarely thought of as such
@@comicbelief and that's a shame. It's definitely his forte.
One thing i like about Garth, he is baisc the outcast, the Guy who did not grow up on superhero comic. He Guy who grow on war comic and so on. Which is not normal comic book writer thing
So?
He is something fresh, not the usual deconstruction or cliche@@aaronjohnson1286
@@aaronjohnson1286 So it gives him a unique perspective on things ? what a worthless reply
@@aaronjohnson1286i don’t know i just like Garth.
@@aaronjohnson1286and also last part, i meant let say american/uk ish comic then say manga or like Franch comic dude.
Oh I've never heard of Wormwood, I should check that out. Preacher is probably a top 10 comic series for me.
His darkness run is one of my favorites! I find most of his stuff highly entertaining tbh.
What he did shadow man? Now i see why the game back in 1999 was so grim, makes sense now i never knew garth had a hand in it till now.
My favourite writer in my favourite Channel! Great work as always 💪🏻 Keep it going!
Very cool. Maybe a George Perez or John Byrne video would be cool in the future.
Yes, it will 🙂
Crossed is WILD
One of my favorite writers of all time. Thanks for this great video and ı wanted to ask if Ennis' Ghost Rider any good ? Been wanting to read that one. Btw congratulations on 1k subscribers hope you'll reach larger audiences.
I like his ghost rider a lot. I don’t think the character has a lot of great stories, so it’s not that hard to stand out from the crowd, which Ennis does very well.
@@comicbelief Will check that out for sure then thanks
@@rolandfrompoland5298 To give you some context, the first version of the Ghost Rider in the 60s was a western hero riding a horse. A few years later he was rebooted as a biker in the present day. One of Ennis’s two stories presents the western Rider as an older version of the current, with similar powers and motivation. It’s very much a Garth Ennis story.
@@comicbelief But Garth Ennis shouldn't have written Get Fury, what happened to him?
The work of Garth is too cynical and depressing for me, but I can see why some fans like his work.
Could you please make a video about the comics drawn by Tim Sale?
Interesting. I’ve never thought of him as cynical. Violent, sure. But the war comics he makes, while not idealistic, I wouldn’t call them bleak.
@@comicbeliefthe boys is the most nihilistic series I've ever read. God the show is such an improvement.
The Hitman is so good
Hitman Omnibus Vol. 1 just came out :)
Garth ennis be is probably my favorite edgelord writer
Will you do a Jonathan Hickman vídeo 😊😊?
I mean to, but it would be a very short one.
@@comicbelief Great BTW Could you do also a jeff lemier and a jason aaron video ?
despite how dark his comics are I really like it because it really shows the reality of how our world actually works
I mean, kind of, but in a way more exaggerated manner.
