One major issue i have on Windows is that the sidebar is to sensitive. It's to easy to accidentally remove a folder or copy or move one to another. On osx this is slightly delayed. I work dual monitor with a Wacom and it's much smoother and nicer on osx. Also, since using windows 11, since February using a Wacom is complete wrecked. Evey click seems to act as a double click. I can't scroll normally, i can't seem to right click normally and get that damn white circle. Eveything related to that is off :(
@@RomboutVersluijs Every system has its issues, that's for sure. OS X's modern Finder gets on my nerves with how the green zoom button behaves. I like the old behavior of Finder windows fitting the content when I click it, but now I have to hold option to get that, and I can't find a setting to toggle it.
@@ericwood3709 resize once manually to full monitor size, next time you double click the area next to the stoplight buttons, it should resize to that full area. That also works on windows, yet windows has better window management
Great stuff Paul, love to see it! Please consider more tips and tricks for macOS, stuff with automator / shortcuts - you can automate like renaming batch files, and or even converting, resizing, stuff I as a photographer would use that lee from F-stoppers should know about heh. Preview is insanely powerful for managing PDFs, or exporting, coverting, resizing. Maybe even a video dedicated to mission control, how macOS allows you unique wallpaper for each individual desktop, something neither 10 nor 11 can do. He was complaining about how he couldn't see the previews of all the apps open with three fingers up, there's also a three fingers down that only shows you multiple windows within that app that people often gloss over.
Preview is remarkable! Not just for resizing and exporting in different formats like heic, but I love the image correction tools, mark-up, deep etch etc. If only Apple would take it a few steps more it would replace Photoshop for basic tasks.
Guy is a life saver...I just Switched from using Windows for 40 years. To a Mac Mini 4 weeks ago....As All my clients are switching.... Only issue I have is copy paste function. As Ctrl C Ctrl V seems to not work. When inside a online game.
Great video. I hope Lee will watch this. I posted a comment about this in his video but there is a terminal command that can only keep open items in his dock. Some people are scared to death of the terminal but if you know the right commands or at least get them from a reputable source, then there is nothing you cannot do or undo with your Mac. And, it is as simple as copy and paste!
Biggest hurdle for me has been compatibility of programs I am using (or their rewrite sucks) and sandboxed apps kill my workflow. Sadly I still find their tendency to hide the nuts and bolts infuriating, not everyone has their workflow limited to checking e-mails and adobe suite
One of the best thing's I've done was to add Home folder and remove every single app from the dock. Now my dock only shows the apps that are open and works as a little file explorer to quickly access files from everywhere. Now it's always uncluttered and I can see which apps are open at quick glance. Much better than the little dots all around the dock which I now have disabled altogether. I have also arranged Launchpad so the apps I used to keep in my dock are on the first page and rest of the apps I rarely use are on rest of the pages. It's even faster to just pinch the trackpad and open your app than finding it from the cluster of small dock icons.
@@CallMeChato Absolutely! One of my favourite bands, have seen them live multiple times. Perks of living in Finland :) Shame that their bassist left the band though, but in two days he'll be singing in Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) concert I'm going to, so at least he hasn't quit music altogether.
@@CallMeChato Just watched ur video about Nightwish. Brilliant video! If you're more into Nordic symphonic metal, Sonata Arctica is a great Finnish power metal band. The singer Kakko is great friends with Holopainen. They even have a habit of going hiking together Here's a good symphonic song for December :) You can hear Kakko's Queen influence on vocals. From pompous, almost "santa-like" vocals to very high belting etc. He's considered one of the best and most versatile metal vocalists in Finland: m.ruclips.net/video/NDT9jRhCTMA/видео.html More generally, this is probably my most favourite song from them. It's about lightkeeper who goes out on new years eve, meets a woman, gets beaten up by her ex. He falls unconscisous and won't be at the lighthouse, which causes a ship to wreck and everyone on it dies. He realized that the girl was on that ship and he decides to jump from the lighthouse. Awesome, I will check it out. Sorry about pronouncing Tarja's name wrong. As long as Sonata doesn't have the grunting male vocals I will probably like it. A lot of Finnish songs about lighthouses. Love Nightwish.
BTW…you can speed up those Finder moves of a folder/file/app to the toolbar, using drag and drop or to remove the object, by simply holding down the command key, then you don't need to go into the Customize dialog. I don't know if that still holds true for any Mac OS beyond Mojave but it's been available in the Finder for many years. I use it to put temporary work files occasionally. I use the sidebar for folders and the dock for apps. The Mac is wonderful in that you can place all sorts of things on all three panels.
I can’t believe I didn’t know some of these tips. I’ve been using macOS for 14 years, as a student, a software developer, and an interface designer. Thanks!
Great stuff. Didn't know a lot of it... For the multiple screens, if you don't happen to have a touchpad, you can just use Ctrl and the Cursor keys to left and right to switch to them...
Hey Paul this was super useful - I'm getting an Apple computer after 36 years in the MS Wintel world and can't wait for my MacBook Pro. MS has made Windows 11 so picky about installation, it won't install on ANY of our 5 PCs. Time to move. Added to that Apple's RISC chip development timeline is overtaking the CISC chips in performance, while only frugally sipping at the battery - so I want some of that. The hardware quality of Apple stuff is super good, and I'm stoked to soon have such a designer object on my desk to use in clamshell mode with my 4k 43-inch monitor. All the best, Rob in Switzerland. PS. If you're 80, I'm 79.
Thanks for some really useful tips 👍 That’s the great/frustrating thing with these powerful OS’s - there are always more hidden ways to do cool stuff. Never stop learning...
I stumbled across your channel for the TV exec 'takes,' but this Apple stuff is somewhat interesting too. One of the big reasons I stick with windows is that my user level (and of course troubleshooting level) is so much lower on mac, so this helps. Also coincidently, I've been toying with old monochrome Mac Plus lately, and it's a little weird how much of the overall look and navigation caries over. Not as true with the windows of the era.
CMD+J on desktop, max grid spacing, label position right, show item info very easy way to see how much space is free on internal and external drives :)
You can click and hold mouse button on an app icon and get a list of all open windows. The active window has a check. When you click on "Show all Windows" it shows like mission control all windows as thumbnail just for this app. It shows also which window is on which monitor.
I always use Command+tab and then drag files directly to the program symbol. Then it opens that file. Very handy. Just like dragging it to the symbol in the dock but usually bigger
I use an app called spectacle which allows you to simply use CMD + OPTION and the arrow keys to quickly move or expand windows. It’s even more efficient then Windows. Also you don’t just need the trackpad to move between desktop spaces. Simply use CTRL + Left or Right arrow keys and you will move it around. For me ironically I find macOS easier to manage windows. As an example il throw Spotify or Vscode into its own dedicated space. So when I Alt + Tab to that app I know it’s there ready for me and it’s already taking up the full screen, and then with apps like Chrome il have on the “main” desktop and use spectacle to throw the window sizes around to suit my needs.
I'm always astonished how many new and long term users think the standard menus in Finder DON'T mean what they say, like "View". Glad to see you use the Toolbar for Folders. I add frequent Apps that relate to common file work eg the iWork apps, Text and Renamer so I can quickly drag files onto them. I add templates and nested folders for sorting work. I also have certain Windows set to Icon view with a background image that divides the window into areas for off the cuff sorting of media files which are set to large preview so I can clearly see what I am dealing with. The astonishing array of possibilities in Finder especially with previewing, tagging, labelling and dragging and dropping files is what makes it so far superior and powerful than Windows or Linux, but few seem to have explored them or even know them.
The first thing I do when configuring a new Mac is change the minimize animation from genie to scale effect, it's much faster. I believe the magnification option for the dock is no longer activated by default but that's something to get rid of too. I agree with everything else you said. The only main problem I have with macOS today is when I want to connect my Android phone to my Mac. I previously used Android File Transfer or SmartSwitch but Big Sur won't let these run anymore, thanks Apple, and no I won't buy an iPhone. I tried a few utility apps but eventually gave up. Nowadays I use my PC instead, I plug my phone and it just shows as a separate directory in Windows from which I drag and drop files, it's that easy. Or I use SmartSwitch to back up specific files (contacts and al) if needed.
Thanks for your tips. The one thing that drives me crazy on macOS is when I'm deep into a folder, it can't open a new tab or a new window in the Finder of the same location I'm currently in with Cmd+N. Instead, it opens a new window of Desktop, or any folder you set-up but not the current one you're in. I know you can right click + open in a new window in the breadcrumb but it slows me down a lot and seems counter intuitive.
@@CallMeChato Hey ! Thanks for your reply ❤ Indeed I can but since the folders I dive in are different each time depending on the project I'm working on, it unfortunately won't do the trick. Wish they add a "Current one" or "Same location" option in the list. Cheers !
Chato, what happened with your "Balance" Lifestyle? Was a short break. :-) But to add something I miss on the folder side of MacOS is a feature Windows got.Folder would be great, if it there would be possibility to show as "select" and "sort" criteria for files the type "Duration". So you could manage video or sound files in folder without to import them into MacOS App's Music or TV.
It took me a while to work this out, but if you're annoyed by the menu bar disappearing on your other screen when you make RUclips full screen (firefox does this, not sure about other browsers), you can click the green button to make the window full screen first, then make the video full screen and your menu bar won't disappear on the other screen. I just press cmd-shift-f then f to make the video full screen, so it's really only one extra key combo.
I like how the whole window snapping thing was just glossed over and I have not once in my time trying to search how to do this natively has anyone mentioned that holding cmd over the "maximize" button would give me the option to do it. And this has been my biggest pet peeves with MacOS. It should be the default way and it should allow you to drag a window to the side of the screen to do it, but at least it is there.
Sorry if I went too fast. If you hover just over the green button you'll get the option to tile it in a new window. If you hold down Option you'll get the option to tile it on existing screen.
ive switched to macOS last year because my company decides to use mac as its work computer due to the iMac getting very damn cheap and all of the apps we use are available on the m1. Funny thing is , all the workers including me never actually use a Mac before. We are all scratching our head going trhrough tutorials. after 2 weeks, we all love the macOS. majority of us bought the mba m1 including myself. I even bought iPad and iPhone 12 just to get into the Apple ecosystem tight nit integeration between devices and I LOVE every moment of it!. One thing I hate out of all the Apple stuff is the magic mouse. It just doesnt work for me and i change to trackpad instead.
Well, I don't plan on switching completely to Mac OS a 100%, but I'm planning to have one to take notes for school or small work such as writting essays or research. Maybe also for personnal uses as well. I never used a macbook before and I always wanted to have one for myself and to try one. I'll still use Windows for other stuff like drawing or other heavier things that the macbook can't handle.
Show Windows and Linux Users how to use unfolding folders, spring loaded folders and how drag and drop works just about everywhere. I feel crippled on Windows without these.
@@rockjano Having to copy and paste files in Windows, from individual folders, one set at a time, opening & closing folders, is so clumsy. Like most things in Windows I guess. Default Folder, which I insist on installing on all my Macs, builds on the Mac method.
What's also handy when your in an app and have multiple Windows open. Ctrl + arrow doen. It will show all windows. Ctrl +arrow up will show all windows and all apps including finder
Thanks for the tips. I just bought my first apple computer 4 days ago. Being a long time windows and Linux user, I have found macOS lacking. I thought anything done on Linux would have to be available in the almighty apple eco system. This video helps.
Switching from windows to mac using cmd+tab, cmd+` and cmd+up is confusing for changing active window. Especially when minimzing windows by "yellow dot". Maybe some video explaining it?
I used Macs only for 29 years and loved OS X. I've been on Windows since 10 and I'm actually surprised at how MEH I am about OS X now. I'm not saying it sucks. Just, yeah, I suppose, and a little bit of MEH.
I use windows for work and macOS at home. Here's a list of things about windows that completely frustrates me: 1. Why is the windows explorer search function so hopeless? The macOS finder search has a better feature set, and unlike Windows, macOS will generally find the file you are looking for. 2. Why can't I tag files in Windows? Well, you can for some file types, but not others. In macOS, you can tag any file which makes file management much simpler. 3. Why does speech to text and text-to-speech work differently for every different application in Windows? In macOS, things are much more consistent. 4. Why can't I make and take phone calls from my phone on Windows. Well, I can, but again, the implementation on Windows is patchy and inconsistent. 5. Why is the default photo editor in windows so hopeless? Photos on macOS allows me to do basic editing, cataloguing etc. And again, integration with the iPhone / iPad is much better. I could go on...
alfred with custom workflows and spectactle app for window managment is mandatory for Mac productivity, btw im a software developer, macOS changed my life
One thing it hate in the side bar in Windows, is that you can very easy drag a folder over another and it starts copying or you delete it by accident. I use a Wacom with dual monitor and on windows it's way to sensitive, on osx there is a small delay
Very cool - thanks for sharing. Any tips for getting a maximized application to take up all of the window space without hiding the menubar and/or doc (like windows maximize)?
@@CallMeChato Thanks much! Found out a couple of things since I posted that might be useful for people to know: 1) You can keep the menubar visible in "zoom" mode via Dock Preferences 2) There's a great free window manager that called Rectangle lets you use windows style shortcuts to manipulate the window position. (I'm not shilling for them, but hope it's ok to mention the app name). Those two issues were big on my complaint list, but largely solved now. Thanks again for posting the video, and for getting back :)
You added a folder to the Finder top bar, but did you know that you can also drop application icons into the Finder top bar? That creates a quick way to "Open with" any file in a non-default application. Great for anyone who wants to open certain types of files with something like Preview or TextEdit or a Hex editor while letting the same filetype open in a different standard default application when double-clicking. This is similar to dragging a file to an app icon on the Dock, but often quicker and easier because the app icon is right there with your files in the Finder window.
You can make the dock appear on each screen even if it's not hidden. Just move the pointer to the bottom and it'll appear on that screen instead. It feels better when it's hidden though yeah
- tab, and - tilde make "clutter" a far lesser concern, IMO. Backup and Restore, esp. as regards new hardware are one of Windows biggest bugaboos... I've just resorted to cloning the hard-drive with *Macrium* . Have I missed something? Does Windows *actually* have nothing to say in this important regard? For messy desktops, I like to create a folder "old messy desktop" , select all the icons, deselect the drives, and "old messy desktop", and drag everything in... you didn't say "insanely great"... does that result in YT Jail?
I learned "windows" on X11R3 on AIX. One thing I find on Windows that I can't on OSX is "FocusFollowsPointer" and "Autoraise". I am told that these are antithetical to the operation of OSX.
Peter if you are casting around for a new set of podcasts may I suggest you do an Introduction and progressive in-depth exploration of macOS and the Apple Eco-System. You do it with such style and good humour, and I think too many Mac users and non-Mac users think that there is nothing else under the simple UI. My unsubtle advice to ALL users is "Read the @#$%ing Menus!" They mean what they say and Apple has always sensibly laid them out so that they progressively work from the broad to the specific left to right. Even experienced users will get ideas from how others use macOS. There were a couple of tips in this podcast that were new to me.
Thanks. I would love to. It would be interesting to actually go through the documentation and explore together. There is a lot there. When I stop my real job. Appreciate the kind words.
Its all nice and good but I don’t understand when you copy files from another directory to another then you must wait to all files to be copied before you cann open or do some things on copied files in finder. It should be multitasking but instead it is single task. Why?
Great content. I’m still not able to figure out to maximize any application window to full screen with the dock and top finder bar displayed. You showed how to maximize and set at left and right of the monitor. And also showed to make it full screen. In Windows you can make it full screen also maximize to the full screen without hiding the taskbar (one click not by dragging mouse). So is there a way in MacOS?
If you create a new virtual desktop both the menu bar and dock are hidden. You can get the menu bar by moving the mouse to the top and holding. Not so the dock.
Hi there :) your videos are great. i saw that you spoke about Time machine backup? can you do a video how to use Time machine backup with a Hackintosh?
It works just like a Mac. Attach a blank external drive and the OS will immediately ask you if you want to make it a time machine drive. And you're done. Simple.
@@MisterHighRisk Ah I see what you mean. If you mean recover files or apps then you just launch time machine from the desktop. If you blow up your boot drive you must have your efi on the efi partition of a usb stick. Boot from efi on usb and then the time machine drive. You’ll have to erase the boot drive. Then restore.
Wonderful video. Thanks! I have been trying to find how to change something (I am on 12.2.1), but I can't find how to do it. The default photo icon thumbnail size for Finder is tiny. I think it is 64 x 64 pixels. So, in the Finder I went to View | Show View Options and made it larger and made it the default. When using Finder directly all is good, but then when I am here on the forum, on Facebook, creating an email, etc. when I want to add a photo to a post a Finder window pops up with the original tiny thumbnails. How can I make this pop up Finder show the default thumbnail size that I set? I add photos probably 10-20 times a day and the tiny thumbnails in the upload window that are smaller than the default size in the regular Finder are a big annoyance. I bet you know how to adjust them. Thanks!
I notice the applications that you have open have black dots under their doc icons, (looking at the open apps on my mac I don’t see black dots) how do I turn this feature on?

I’ve been using Mac for years and yet I learned a lot here. Especially that I should option click on everything just to see what it does.
Have a look at any Linux or FreeBSD guide that covers it. It works exactly the same in MacOS.
@@peterbreis5407 Yeah, i think photos app is a pretty good photo editor and comes free with the os. i miss aperture. rip.

Wonderful stuff Chato. I learned a lot from your previous video too!
Awesome, thank you! Appreciate the kind words.
Super cool. Are you also part of the Nightwish Army? :-)
@@CallMeChato Absolutely! One of my favourite bands, have seen them live multiple times. Perks of living in Finland :)
Shame that their bassist left the band though, but in two days he'll be singing in Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) concert I'm going to, so at least he hasn't quit music altogether.
@@CallMeChato Just watched ur video about Nightwish. Brilliant video!
If you're more into Nordic symphonic metal, Sonata Arctica is a great Finnish power metal band. The singer Kakko is great friends with Holopainen. They even have a habit of going hiking together
Here's a good symphonic song for December :) You can hear Kakko's Queen influence on vocals. From pompous, almost "santa-like" vocals to very high belting etc. He's considered one of the best and most versatile metal vocalists in Finland: m.ruclips.net/video/NDT9jRhCTMA/видео.html
More generally, this is probably my most favourite song from them. It's super interesting song with layers of meanings and the more you read into it, the more interesting it becomes. There's also a great live performance on youtube

The Mac is wonderful in that you can place all sorts of things on all three panels.
ive watched i dont know how many mac os tips videos, and ive literally never seen anyone mention the "use iphone" options before. Thats amazing
I learned new stuff today, and I’m a longtime Mac/Windows user….Thnx!
Great to hear!
I would consider myself an intermediate to experienced Mac users and even I learned a few things from this video. Thanks for sharing!
You're so darned welcome. Happy to help.
Been using macOS for 20 years, and I still learned a couple of things!
Good stuff. I switched to MacOS from a lifetime on Windows. No going back.
I can’t believe I didn’t know some of these tips. I’ve been using macOS for 14 years, as a student, a software developer, and an interface designer. Thanks!
You're very welcome.
Thanks Rob. There will be a learning curve but I love my MacBook Pro. I have been to Lucerne and Pilatus.
@@CallMeChato My wife is from Lucerne - we're there every few weeks. A lovely town. With the lake and the mountain, what more could you want?!

That’s the great/frustrating thing with these powerful OS’s - there are always more hidden ways to do cool stuff.
Never stop learning...
Holy Moly! I know about 2% of what Mac OS can do, now I'm up to 3%! Woot! Had no idea about the scan from phone. Thanks!!!
Yeah, I used that all the time and put it into Evernote.
I wish MacOS had decent window snapping, so you didn't need the Magnet app. It's built into Windows and particularly Windows 11.
It’s fun dabbling.
CMD+J on desktop, max grid spacing, label position right, show item info
very easy way to see how much space is free on internal and external drives :)
Thanks for sharing! I've never used this on the desktop. Cool, man.
very useful tips. Some I never knew about. Thanks 😃

You can click and hold mouse button on an app icon and get a list of all open windows. The active window has a check. When you click on "Show all Windows" it shows like mission control all windows as thumbnail just for this app. It shows also which window is on which monitor.
What I use: Finder tags for files and Quicklook (space bar). And intelligent folders in the side bar.
I've been a Mac user for years, and I learned some new stuff here. Thanks!
Thanks, got a couple new tricks!!
Like the plugging your computer in part?
That file renaming tip is awesome! I was thinking about downloading a third-party app for that, but not anymore. Thanks! 😎👍
What?!? I didn't know you could do that!!!
-Me, a Mac user for the past 16 years
Great tips. I recently dipped my toes in MAC OS and IOS. I have been on android since my first day in IT
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the comment. Agreed. It's sort of like setting up templates in InDesign first. It's tedious but brings huge benefits later.
I am also in the process of moving from Windows to a MAC - Thank You - very useful !
Thank you the video. Didn't know about pairing the Mac desktop with iPhone to scan docs
Well, you can, sorta. In Finder preferences you can select in New Finder Windows Show and select Other and the folder you want to open. It's ugly.

I use Ubar for my Dock replacement. Much more functionality for me. Not because I like Windows Task bar, but loved having a panel in Linux Desktop.
I fully converted to MacOS in 2005 and I learned some things today. Thanks!

I have no idea what you're talking about. :-)

Great tips, if only I knew what the Option key was.

I use windows for work and macOS at home. Here's a list of things about windows that completely frustrates me:

Yes, double click the drag window bar at top or hover over the green light and press the option key and you'll see a zoom option.
@@CallMeChato Thanks much! Found out a couple of things since I posted that might be useful for people to know:
1) You can keep the menubar visible in "zoom" mode via Dock Preferences
2) There's a great free window manager that called Rectangle lets you use windows style shortcuts to manipulate the window position.
Oh yeah I know that. Just zooming about. Thanks for the tip.
You can make the dock appear on each screen even if it's not hidden. Just move the pointer to the bottom and it'll appear on that screen instead. It feels better when it's hidden though yeah
It can take a few clicks and holding the mouse there a few times sometimes for it to show up. But yeah.
I'm sorry I didn't say insanely great. Will correct next time.

Logitech G413 Carbon. Yes, it's clicky without that high pitched click.
I learned "windows" on X11R3 on AIX. One thing I find on Windows that I can't on OSX is "FocusFollowsPointer" and "Autoraise". I am told that these are antithetical to the operation of OSX.
Hey, just try to rotate annotation shapes in Preview without a Magic Trackpad, only with your Mouse and have fun! :-D

From what I have seen of Win 11 I will be a Mac (hackintosh) use in the near future. Been trying to get use to Linux but it just doesn't do it for me.
My Dad is 70 and he enjoys the simplicity of Mac OS more than windows.
Great video.
And Fstopper video is just too cringed to watch.
Excellent video! I learned something and i've been a Mac user for years! Thanks!
Oh, there's always something. Thanks.
@@CallMeChato so is there no way to maximize then?

Hi there :) your videos are great. i saw that you spoke about Time machine backup? can you do a video how to use Time machine backup with a Hackintosh?
It works just like a Mac. Attach a blank external drive and the OS will immediately ask you if you want to make it a time machine drive. And you're done. Simple.
@@CallMeChato and how about the EFI folder you have to put it after the backup? And how do you restore it?
@@MisterHighRisk Ah I see what you mean. If you mean recover files or apps then you just launch time machine from the desktop. If you blow up your boot drive you must have your efi on the efi partition of a usb stick. Boot from efi on usb and then the time machine drive. You’ll have to erase the boot drive. Then restore.
@@CallMeChato thanks I see 😀
So you can also update the backup files without to do a whole backup again?
Thanks!
