8 years... How time flies. I'm glad I can come back to the place where my love for d&d started. It kinda shaped my life in a really radical way, and to think it started with lava bears is hilarious. Technically, lava bears are the cause of my figuring out my gender identity, finding the love of my life, and getting a job writing monster smut. Weird to think about.
This will always be one of my favorite D&D live plays. It probably has more to do with being how I got introduced to LRR as looking back on it I wish the episodes were longer and less chatty lol.
***** Fair feedback! Like I said in the episode, I'm only devoting that much time to the sponsor callout in the first episode. We *will* be reminding you every episode, but briefly. Jer intentionally hand-waved the talking to NPCs in town stuff because this adventure was promised as an "old-school" D&D dungeon crawl, and we wanted to jump right in. For what it's worth, he's very good at that, and I'm sure you'll enjoy his NPC interactions in future sessions. The whole intent of the show is not to simply watch D&D, but to watch *us* play D&D, and part of that is our humour and table-talk. Us joking around and making side comments is going to be part of the entertainment, so that is unlikely to change. All that said, I appreciate the feedback and I think that if you keep watching, you'll enjoy the episodes to come :)
UPDATE on our sponsorship! Wyrmwood Gaming encountered an issue with their retail platform that prevented them from giving free shipping to international orders (which they had always wanted to do), so they've decided to change it from free shipping to 18% off with our code. This means everyone worldwide can take advantage of this deal!
I think this is the first recorded roleplaying game video I've watched where each person's voice is approximately the same volume, people actually explain in detail what they're doing. It really gives the feel that you're sitting at the table with them.
attcking the wind bring up memories of the D&D viseo where the guy casts magic missile at the darkness super funny and cant wait to watch more episodes
Quite a good production. You were great about acknowledging your newness to 5e, but you didn't let confusion impede the game. You maintained a nice flow, without getting rushed. Congrats.
Upon seeing the windy ash vortex lit up in blue by Jervais's fairy fire Adran exclaims, "It's some kind of... ELEMENTAL!" Thok concurs and, upon noticing it's swirling cerulean luminescence, concludes, "Must be ice!"
I love using the southern B.C. (where I grew up) for my D&D games (They all live in the middle of Alberta from lethbridge/calgary). Such a magical majestic place... to people whom never bushwacked in the Provincial Parks for twenty years.
Huge fan of all your videos me and friends watch the big loops of them while we play magic but these might be my absolute favorite videos . I only played D&D once almost 13 years ago and though I love lots of nerdy things, this holds a special place in my heart and it might also be because my friends were never as awesome at improvising funny stuff which is totally why you guys are all great, I am really excited to see continued content in this line with maybe more D&d in addition to all your excellent content :D
Good thing I saw this: I was about 7 minutes in and just about to stop watching. I wouldn't have thought someone who'd put all that crap at the beginning would be smart enough to do something I'd like, but I'm enjoying this show.
Once, I was part of a long running d&d campaign that had a parthian rule. The parthian rule is that upon leaving the game (like to sleep, go to a library, sharpen a knife, take a hike, cook a turkey, etc), you get to add one new rule, condition, or boss. And since that campaign had 45 different people involved at different points, and took over 5 months, it eventually got to the point where the campaign was completed via a (real) rubber chicken, an electricity spell, 13 (Obviously fake) drow livers, and a cup of tea.
The Flaming Bear: Hot cocoa (dark, not sweet) with chilli served in a coconut. Add Amaretto over the back of a spoon so it sits on top and you can light it, stir to extiguish. Presumably coconuts are rare in the northwest so you'd want to reuse them.
Not only watching this series AGAIN, but I also just purchased a dice tray! I will probably get more from Wyrmwood when I have the money! Thanks for the series and the discount! Hope to see some D&D again in the future!!!
This was surprisingly useful in learning some of the new elements of 5th edition! Sometimes seeing it is a lot more straightforward than poring through the books looking for rule changes.
I love this new series! I have never played D&D though I know a couple people who do and this makes me feel like it would be alot of fun to get involved in.
This looks really fun! Never played D&D myself but this has got me interested :) Also the art is really good! Featherweight did an amazing job on this! I was not expecting art of all the characters and monsters :D
After having watched this all when it came out, getting the 5th ed D&D books, and then coming back to watch this in my spare time, I have 1 complaint: They misread the Sorcerer's Tides of Chaos feature. Once it is used up, but before it is regained via long rest, anytime the sorcerer casts a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher, the DM can have them roll on the Wild Magic Surge *table*, skipping the d20 roll! We could have had a lot more crazy random awesomeness!
Ok, I love that you guys did this and obviously did as much work as you good to do it as correctly as you wanted. I loved it, and as a GM, I really love seeing others run and play their games. That said... Can I give a tiny quibble? A minute criticism? I think I would've liked to have seen people interact with the town. Like, instead of Jer telling about the problems, have the PCs run into examples of what's been going on. I suspect this might've been dropped for the sake of speeding stuff up (because getting Players to get to the right place at the right time isn't something you can predict as a GM. Seriously. Like herding cats). That said, Jer has awesome boxed text. Felt like old school dungeon fun to me.
At last! I have been looking forward to this. Paul, I appreciate you roleplaying to Thok's approach to situations, and Thok's love for his "litter" of elves. I would say you should make that a sitcom but isn't that what we're already watching? :-)
8:20 I actually kinda like that you are using a system you aren't completely familiar with, it could give those of us not super familiar with the nitty gritty of D&D a chance to follow along 22:09 I think Ryan the Roman Rogue is pretty rad (okay I know he's not actually Roman I just think his armor looks like roman armor)
WotC is notoriously bad at properly assessing how difficult their monsters are, so you have things like a Harpy with a massive radius charm effect at CR1, or creatures with a save-or-die attack on intelligence at CR2. It does take some smarts as a DM to not cause a catastrophe.
Flaming Bear Recipe: 1 Shot Fireball, 1 Shot Gold Tequila, 1 Shot Hot Damn!, 1 Shot Butterscotch Schnapps. Mix all liquors in a coffee mug, warm to tea temperature, dissolve 1 tsp Caramel in the mixture. Add one shot of cold milk or soy milk. Drink.
I know this is an old video but can anyone tell me if the podcast version still exist. I'd like to listen to this campaign at work but youtube is blocked :(

My initial guess of why the earthquakes were happening and people disappearing was the cloaked people were sacrificing the people and causing the volcano to start to wake.
So, this will be my first time through the vidcast. I first came across this as a podcast on Podcast Addict. If this is you first time, let me just tell you it the story arc is well conceived, the characters are fun and interesting, and the players themselves add a lot to the cast. So, if you are on the fence about if you should continue listening/watching...yes, yes you should. To the players: If you have the adventure in pdf form I would like to get my hands on it for my group, if not, I hope you don't mind if I do a bit of reverse engineering of it.
I listened to the podcast version of this first, and then watched this version (well, about half of it.) The audio mixing, for the record, seems to be vastly superior on the podcast version - there are times where I'm struggling to hear people in the video/RUclips version (particularly Cameron, although I fear that's kind of a regular thing with Cam, as he's soft-spoken). I love the title card and various character images and so on. They're very well-done, but I've been enjoying Featherweight's art for a while now. :D The game itself seems fun, and please continue to include little bits about "in 5th edition, things are THIS way" because I (like possibly others) have not yet played 5th Edition and am not very familiar with all the rules. It's very helpful for me, at the least. I'm excited to see how this game progresses. Now, question - it's clear Jer put a TON of work into this (even writing up boxed text, o mai!) Once the game is finished, will this be available to the public in any way (either for free, donation, or purchase?)
AislinnBMln The audio mix is exactly the same, it may be that phenomenon where watching a video divides your attention somewhat? I don't know. In any case, thanks for the feedback!
loadingreadyrun I had a feeling that might be the case. I think it may be a difference in speakers, actually - I listen to the podcast primarily while I'm driving (and my car has excellent sound), while RUclips videos I watch at home, on my laptop, which those speakers are... not as good. Nor anywhere near as strong.
It is interesting that without quick-cuts you guys are less divinely funny then in your polished progrmas, but are on the same level of humorous as most of my friends in real life. :)
i would love to run this campaign in my group but i would either have to write it all down or i could see if you ever thought of making a temple of the lava bears book and sell it so that people can run it in the campaigns
@LoadingReadyRun Is there any way that I could convince Jeremy to share the details of the campaign so that I can share the wonder of this campaign with my play group? (After the finale of course)
As is traditional when Jer is DMing for these guys and it's being broadcast, I'll be donating $10 to Desert Bus for Hope for each point of acid damage to a maximum of 40 points of acid damage. None yet, but the game is young.
***** Eh, rewrites or no we both know I'm going to donate the full amount regardless of what happens. Since DB8 is about to start I just did that. If it is earned in this series, cool. If not, no worries. I'm sure the future will be full of plenty of acid damage to take care of any current shortages. :P
Is it weird that I find Graham's voice really soothing? His voice is perfect for a radio personality for a classical music station.
Trust me, you are not the only one.
This will always be one of my favorite D&D live plays. It probably has more to do with being how I got introduced to LRR as looking back on it I wish the episodes were longer and less chatty lol.
I listen to this every time I feel down, thanks for always being there guys, love the stories you tell
RUclips recommending this to me for some reason after 6 years? Thanks i guess Ill watch Jer torture his friends again

Gram I have been a fan for about a year now, and I am still amazed by how soothing and luxurious your voice is. XD

Yay! everything looks great!
Those transition/character pics are super cool!
I still come back and watch this every year and the drawings are legendary in my mind. Amazing work!
This was surprisingly useful in learning some of the new elements of 5th edition! Sometimes seeing it is a lot more straightforward than poring through the books looking for rule changes.
YES! I'e been waiting all since that stream when you guys mentioned that you would do a DnD campaign and it' finally here!
I just started playing and I am soooooooooooooooo happy that you guys are playing this game and all of you are soooooooooooooooo awesome!!!!!!!!!!
Jer, you are an awesome story teller and that makes you a great DM.
I almost passed out when i saw the animated opening. Thought it was animated. Still very cool :)
Cyrulean THAT might have killed Featherweight and Jeremy.

The transition pictures are super sweet. Man the memories of campaigns past are flooding in!
I'm loving it guys, can't wait to see what happens next and, if HUSTLE is any sort of indicator, who dies first ^_^
...and you guys play dnd too. Another of my favorite things you got on the goodies list. You guys are like an all I can eat buffet of nerdyness.
56:57 "Temple of the Sand Bears": and when the two meet, then you have glass bears!
After having watched this all when it came out, getting the 5th ed D&D books, and then coming back to watch this in my spare time, I have 1 complaint: They misread the Sorcerer's Tides of Chaos feature. Victoria BC? freaking love you guys!
-from Vancouver BC
Thanks for the inside geographical jokes
Thank you so much! first time watching D'n'D and it looks as fun as it sounds! (Which is very fun)
I've never really gotten into d&d stuff but with this I really want to try and experience it.
Ok, I love that you guys did this and obviously did as much work as you good to do it as correctly as you wanted. I loved it, and as a GM, I really love seeing others run and play their games. That said... Can I give a tiny quibble? A minute criticism?

Josh Pearce That was all, as you said, sped up to get the temple itself going, but no worries. Criticisms welcome!
Hope lusian has a good con save, cause if he gets sick he will be an ILLUSION hahahahah
This is great. Going to definitely check out Wyrmwood.
I don't play D&D so I didn't really understand a lot, but this was really fun to watch and makes me interested in 5th Edition. Thanks ya'll.
D&D 5E: "Look, we've had a lot of beer, and we just don't care"
So great! I'll be looking forward to new episodes!
Loved it! Looking forward to the next episode.
Flaming Bear Drink = Pot of Coffee + Rum + Chilly
This is awesome! I'm playing in a 5e campaign right now too! However, I'm a little sad that Cam won't always be there...
This is fantastic! I can't wait for more.
An Elk-Elf reminded me of Lorwyn elves. They seem like a nice Lawful Evil race.
At last! I have been looking forward to this. Paul, I appreciate you roleplaying to Thok's approach to situations, and Thok's love for his "litter" of elves. I would say you should make that a sitcom but isn't that what we're already watching? :-)

Yay! Worth the wait!
Flaming bear recipe: eccence of bear 1cup
Whiskey 1cup
Vodka 1cup
Beer 1cup
Saki 23 cups
There is a full gregorian day's worth of Lava Bears, Jesus. XD
Long have I waited for this. Let the slaughter of PCs commence!
8:20 I actually kinda like that you are using a system you aren't completely familiar with, it could give those of us not super familiar with the nitty gritty of D&D a chance to follow along
22:09 I think Ryan the Roman Rogue is pretty rad (okay I know he's not actually Roman I just think his armor looks like roman armor)
The Romanish style was a choice on my end. Just seemed to fit with the specs Cameron gave me.
So excited to watch this.
Greeeen Flaaame! Oh wait.
Name is okay, but I love me some D&D, can't wait for more
featherweight you're a CHAMP!
As always thanks for the content!
Looks like Im late to the party. but you got a like and sub. needed something to listen to whilst i farm mats on an MMO.
OK, I know the audience for it was small, but I for one appreciated the Tsawwassen asides. =)
Stephen Gray Yessssss
Cameron really needs to do voice acting. That voice is so silky.
When Paul was describing Thok, I assumed that his axe is called Wisdom
I sure hope Jer is a good DM, because he's going to need to be an absolute genius to make sense out of 5e's encounter design paradigms.
David B How do you mean?
(also, he is, so we're fine)
WotC is notoriously bad at properly assessing how difficult their monsters are, so you have things like a Harpy with a massive radius charm effect at CR1, or creatures with a save-or-die attack on intelligence at CR2. It does take some smarts as a DM to not cause a catastrophe.

loadingreadyrun , there you are. =D
There's a Warrior trainer in AdventureQuest Worlds named Thok.
I'm still surprised by the fact that Cam didn't play a wizard.
Please do lots more of this stuff.

ryan isn't a thief, he's more of an explorer... of other peoples belongings. :P

Where did this elves are short thing come from? Elves in most dnd settings have the same height range as humans and are on average slightly taller

Good start, guys. I love listening to tabletop game sessions like this. Hope to see more soon. How often do you plan to post these?
I love how Kathleens shadow in the group image looks like batman ~~
Interesting idea I like
Finally got around to follow this series. :)
That was fun.
I need to find a D&D group.
Very curious about this, have never seen D&D being played, believe it or not
It is interesting that without quick-cuts you guys are less divinely funny then in your polished progrmas, but are on the same level of humorous as most of my friends in real life. :)
ReformedDruids Thanks?
Yeah
It is like seeing you guys without your makeup, in your normality. Not a bad thing, just more real, less like gods.
Its been 3 years and theres the dmsguild and drivethrurpg. Is there any chance of getting the module for temple of the lava bears?
oh my god this exists bless you
i would love to run this campaign in my group but i would either have to write it all down or i could see if you ever thought of making a temple of the lava bears book and sell it so that people can run it in the campaigns

I COUNTER THAT SPELL!
Well I'm glad Tsawwassen's D&D doppelganger is under terrible peril and disaster.
(Edit: I'm from Ladner xD)
I love how Adran’s silhouette in the thumbnail kinda resembles Batman. XD
My take on the flaming bear: one shot Jägermeister, two shots hot Damn in a tall glass of coke.
