This is the radio edit, the full version has a big orchestra ending, with a reading of Late Lament, a poem written by the drummer, Graeme Edge, who sadly died very recently. You should check out Question next.

I agree I saw them in concert about 10 years ago it was Graeme Edge's 69th birthday and I was probably the only 20 year old. My dad played them forever and I grew to love them. Their sound is so unique and truly beyond their time. Lyrics are so poetic and cerebral. If that makes sense. ❤️

The lead singer wrote this when he was 19 years old. That was a full orchestra you were hearing. Even if you don't do a YT reaction, you should listen to the album version or a live performance, because you didn't hear the orchestra outro. Also, in the album version there's a spoken word poem called "Late Lament" recited during the outro.

    • @kivimik

The sound you are referring to in the chours, is a mellotron. Its what gives the moodies their haunting and mystical quality! In a way, it was an analog version of a synthesizer. It used tape reels of recorded instruments.

That 'violin' is actually a mellotron, a keyboard that can mimic an orchestra. Those were the days. Beautiful song, great band. "Story In Your Eyes" is another great song by them.

The Moody Blues are my all-time favourite band. The 'orchestra' sound on this version is in fact the work of Moodies keyboard player Mike Pinder. He is using (and is the master of) an instrument called the Mellotron which was the analogue forerunner of modern synths.

      Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed sitter people look back and lament
      Another days useless energy spent
      Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is gray and yellow white
But we decide which is right
      And which is an illusion

    • @IllumeEltanin
      @IllumeEltanin 2 года назад +1

@@mikemaricle9941, remember, the album then loops around with the reverse gong and Morning Glory to open:
Cold-hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colors from our sight,
Red is gray and yellow white,
But we decide which is right,
      And which is an illusion.
Pinprick holes in a colorless sky,
Let insipid figures of light pass by,
The mighty light of ten thousand suns,
Challenges infinity and is soon gone.
Nighttime, to some a brief interlude,
To others the fear of solitude.
Brave Helios, wake up your steeds,
Bring the warmth the countryside needs.

You owe it to yourself to listen/react to the entire album, called Days of Future Past, that this song is part of. It's really meant to be heard as part of that concept album. Also, yes, you heard violins, because the Moody Blues recorded the song and that entire album with the London Symphony Orchestra. Seriously. Check out the album in its entirety.

Not the LSO, but a group of session musicians brought in. For the album only, they were called the London Festival Orchestra--not really an existing orchestra.

  • @lostinalostworld2290

The hauntingly beautiful orchestral backing sound you are hearing is actually Mike Pinder's Mellotron along with backing vocal harmonies from the group. Justin Hayward is the songwriter, guitarist and lead singer. Also John Lodge on bass, Ray Thomas on flute (RIP 2018) and Graeme Edge on drums (RIP 2021). This song was part of their1967 concept album "Days of Future Passed" which portrayed the various parts of a day. including "Dawn is a Feeling", "Tuesday Afternoon", "Evening Time To Get Away", etc. The band played their original songs and the London Festival Orchestra played the interludes between the songs. Pretty groundbreaking record, especially for that era. The Moody Blues were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Well deserved and long overdue. Cheers to you both.

This song is from the album Days of Future Passed. Days of Future Passed is the second album and first concept album by English prog rock band The Moody Blues, released in November 1967 by Deram Records. With its fusion of orchestral and rock elements, it has been cited as one of the first examples of progressive rock. The band worked with record producer Tony Clarke, engineer Derek Varnals, and conductor Peter Knight. The group recorded and mixed their sessions first, then passed the finished tapes over to Knight for arranging and recording the orchestral interludes. I feel that Peter Knight made a huge contribution to the sound and success of the album. He became famous for his rich lush orchestration for The Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed, most widely known through the single Nights in White Satin.

I grew up listening to this group & they are one of my favorites from the 60's-80's. They have had so many hit songs. Love their mix of rock with classical music. They have a sound like no other band. The Moody Blues' most successful singles include "Go Now", "Nights in White Satin", "Tuesday Afternoon", "Question", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" & "Your Wildest Dreams". But all of their music is great.

The ending part of the album “Days of Future Passed" is stunning and brilliant. From a poem Late Lament:
    Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room.
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
    Another day's useless energy spent.
    Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.

The extraordinary vulnerability of Justin Hayward's vocal on this cannot be repeated, even by him, because the moment is gone. But a teenager in love may totally believe the world is ending somewhat if they can't figure out their emotions. That, I would say, is the legacy of this song.

Justin Hayward wrote this song in high school for a girl he was in love with but too shy to tell. The Moody Blues recorded it as the last part of the classic ‘Days Of Future Passed’ album in 1967, and it became an international hit. A mutual friend told the girl, Ann Marie Guirron, that it had been written about her, she asked Justin if it was true, and he confirmed it. They have been married since 1970.

The boys look a little 'dorky' in their suits with ruffles but after all it is 1967 and they had just put together a concept album, 'Days of Future Passed', with full orchestra and in Stereo! It is often cited as the start of 'Progressive Rock' and Justin Hayward, although young at the time, is in a fine melancholic voice underpinned by Mike Pinder's Mellotron, Ray Davies' Flute, Graham Edge's percussion and John Lodge's bass. A classic song that never grows old.

I have loved this song for ever. Another dramatic song that I like is "Vienna" by Ultravox.

Love the haunting melody of this song. His voice almost goes into a yodel like Delores Rearden...classic

Can't help feeling you would both have a more immersive and immediate experience with headphones... some bands bring so much to the table you need headphones to get it all. As also with Supertramp.

When this was released, there was no such thing as videos, these were promotional trailers for a particular song, sometimes at the pictures (cinema).
You are right Chod, the music spoke for itself,we didn’t need images to distract from the music.
Man,I thank God I was a teen in the 60’s,young man in the 70’s.
    The concerts and parties !!
We were never at home, there was ALWAYS something going on involving music.

Chod, if you haven’t yet, listen to “I’m just a singer in a rock n roll band” (Moody Blues). Make sure to listen to the studio release version - it is EXCELLENT. Great work you’re doing, btw.

Thx! Love the Moody blues! Today’s music has a lot of bells & whistles so to speak. Yesterday’s music had decorations!

Sorry guys, but you stopped it before the ending. The ending starts with, Breath deep the gathering gloom. Watch lights fade from every room. There’s more than these two sentences so please listen to it again all the way through. Enjoy your channel a lot!

If my musical memory serves me correctly (and that is not a sure thing anymore), that is the performance from the final mix for the album, the master tape or a direct copy and they were lip syncing it for the video. Not a bad thing since they were the actual performers in the studio along with a full symphonic orchestra performing the charts. The conductor did a great job keeping things together, sort of a concerto grosso with a prog rock band for the soloists. That was pretty much a new thing when this album was made.
