This is the best rendition of this song that I've ever heard. It's absolutely beautiful. Justin's voice is incredible even years later. I'm 70 and remember this song when they first came out with it.
A lot of members of Generation Z are going to discover the song. They are going to wonder how most of the music today is unlike the music of their parents and grandparents. The music of the Moody Blues is eternal long after most of today's bands are forgotten.
The lead singer, Justin Hayward, wrote this when he was only 19. He is now 76 and still touring! I was blessed to have seen him live in 2022. That man can still sing! ❤❤
this is the closing track from the moody blues concept album Days of Future Passed which about a day in one man's life the lyrics for the song was inspired by Justin Hayward the singer receiving a set of white satin bed sheets from a girlfriend. the song closes with a spoken poem. Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bed sitter people look back and lament Another days useless energy spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colors from our sight Red is gray and yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion
I thought it was spoken by Graham Edge but I have been told it was Mike Pinder who spoke this poem. Nonetheless this is an amazing classic song I believe it will go down in history as one of the best rock songs ever written
The Lead Singer Justin Hayward wrote Nights In White Satin when he was 19 years old. This man is a musical genius and wrote most of the Moody Blues classical hits.
Incredible to think this song is now 56 years old! Wonder how much of the current crap will be around that long? Actually you don't have to wonder because it's blindingly obvious that the answer is none.
Young lady I think you were smiling the entire song. I grew up with groups like this..... My generation had the best vehicles AN/D the best music!!!!! I am SO happy you enjoyed it. Take care...........
This was first done 57 years ago, maybe your grandparents listen to it . some versions have a poem inserted in the performance that is read by the keyboardist, the drummer wrote the poem Late Lament Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room. Bedsitter people look back and lament, Another day's useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one. Lonely man cries for love and has none. New mother picks up and suckles her son. Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight. Red is grey and yellow white, But we decide which is right And which is an illusion. Graeme Edge The Moody Blues
I'm so sorry for those gen z that cannot find this band to tell you frankly boys and girls the Moody blues are my parents favorite song I forged in 80.s and 90s Gen.z: can we know how you get immortality in your age of 35 ? Me: I'm might afraid it not gonna be happened to you all Gen: z it's very unfair to us me: im sorry children
I was a little worried when I saw you were doing a live version probably done 40 years after original, but that was really pretty damn good. The recorded version is just as beautiful.
Yeah, it's never the ideal way to introduce someone to a new song. Usually, live versions lack the intricate arrangements and balanced mix of the studio versions. Add to that, most vocalists singing power diminishes as they age. So, definitely not the best version. But, as aged live sets go, this wasn't bad.
The song is absolutely beautiful, but it is way more meaningful with the poem at the end. Such a treat when a radio station would play the whole track.
@@DrewHomeworld The poem at the end was recorded separately. It is called Late Lament and was written by their drummer, Graeme Edge. The poem was read by keyboard player Mike Pinder. I once lay in bed thinking of new verses to that poem but never wrote them down 😅
The lead singer wrote this song at 19. Just after his girlfriend broke up with him. As a parting gift she gave him a set of white satin sheets. His voice was great then. But by the time of this live concert His voice has become even richer.
In Seattle, Washington, Eagles Auditorium 1967 or 68. Their first album was mind-blowing. We cheered and screamed our approval. Singer told us no one had ever cheered or wanted more from them before. So he said they would do the show over. Because they had no other music.
This was one of their biggest songs here in the states. I think Justin wrote this in his late teens (19), It is a beautiful and heart felt love song! Yes my dear it is pretty!!!!!! Prepare yourself for the ending! With the full orchestra it is spectacular!!!! This music can make you cry!!! Did you love it????? A masterpiece from a Rock & Roll of Fame group. Take care!!!!
The Moody Blues music blends hand in glove with orchestra arrangements. Young lady I have been listening to this band longer than you have lived. This my dear this is the Moody Blues. An U.K. band formed in 1964. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. My favorite album was/is Seventh Sojourn. All good songs and a few great ones on this album/CD. Just wait until the final section it will melt your heart & brain!! From the sparkle in your eyes and the smile on your face I think you loved it!!!!................ Bye to you pretty lady.......................
Important to understand that the orchestral component was not a modern-day addition to this classic song; the Moody Blues incorporated full orchestras in their original works, quite revolutionary in the ‘60’s and early ‘70’s, including this song, where the orchestra added depth, tone, and impact to their music and also helped connect one song to the next in their albums…
Indeed, I would posit they were the first rock group to fully incorporate orchestra music into their sound. I have always said that rock and orchestra, chorale as well, are genres of music that are a match made in heaven. Two great examples: 2006 Danish orchestra and choir backing up Whiter Shade of Pale and Heart's tribute to Led Zepp with full orchestra and choir. OF another world. Rock and symphonic music forever❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Now listen to Jeff Wayne's "Forever Autumn" with the same singer (Justin Hayward) and Richard Burton narrating. taken from the album "The War Of The Worlds"
The studio version completes with a beautiful poem; worth your time Inna. I have seen the Moody Blues in concert 3 or 4 times over the years, and they always have a local orchestra accompany them in song. They are a deep rabbit hole with many great songs!
I'd go a step further... The studio version , with Justin Hayward's voice at full range and power and the haunting poem at the end... Well you have to listen to that.
❤ Glad you have discovered these guys. This song came out in 1967-68. At that time, popular music was limited to under 2 min 30 sec on AM radio. If it was longer than that it was edited to fit the airtime. FM radio was a new medium. FM stations in an attempt to get listeners would play the album cuts with the intro and post song attachments. Bands loved that people wanted to hear these album tracks in their entirety. would cover the entire length.
Oops, I got excited and hit send, sorry. People started doing the FM thing. Bands and fans got more of what they wanted. Album sales went up, and all the people who make money got a bigger piece of the pie. The Moody Blues were just one of the new more chilled mellow sounding rock bands out there. But everyone got into the longer length songs and even AM radio started playing longer cuts. Okay, maybe now I'm done.
I don't know that I can add anything meaningful to this conversation, but I just had to chime in to say that this has been one of my absolute favorite songs since the day it came out. Also, I have a bit of a musical background, so I appreciate the talent and concentration necessary to recreate a studio masterpiece in a live performance -- especially so many years later, when age can take a toll on one's voice. In listening to this, I couldn't help but relive the emotions I felt when hearing this song so many years ago. What a great performance!
I've been to 100 concerts. I've never heard a band that sounds more like their album, live, than these guys. The lighters were out the entire concert early 70's in Atlanta. People were absolutely blown away!
I've been in love with this band since the very early 70's while in the ARMY. I've seen them 4 times with 2 of them with the full Orchestra. I to have seen nearly a 100 concerts also but consider the Moody Blues concert in 2001 with just the band at a small venue winery in Los Gatos Ca. to be my favorite of them all. Maybe 2000 people singing every word to every song. An 80 year old man to my left and the young teenager on my wife's right. We ALL sang ! Their music crosses generations. Even the Ushers were dancing in the isles. Pure Magic that night. I still have the jersey (not a tee shirt) from that night. Of course it doesn't fit any more. It must have shrunk in the wash............yah right !
Hi there Inna. You should expect great, well crafted, and thoughtful music!!!! The Moody Blues music goes perfect with a full orchestra. Back in the day, it was usually up to Mike Pinder and his Melltron to produce many of these sounds. BUT with an orchestra the musical spectrum is covered...... Jason wrote this beautiful LOVE song in his late teens (19). Can you imagine????? Inna I saw this band back in the 1980's, it was like listening to a studio recording... It was perfect!!!! These men still have it!! Honey they have been around over one/half of a century!!! Please explore their catalog more!!!! Thanks.....
Your reaction was spot on! I was sooo touched by this sing growing up. It still brings tears to my eyes and these shivers thru my body. Im so happy you enjoyed it
In 1965 The Moody Blues were one of the favourite bands of The Beatles and they used to hang out in London (at The Scotch of St James club). When Paul McCartney was putting Wings together after The Beatles split up, he asked Denny Laine (who passed recently) who had been in The Moodies originally to help him get his new band going. They went on to write several songs together... Love your wonderful reactions Inna!
I remember my dad.. usually too busy and working to even have time for me most days.. he knew I loved music and took me to see them live with the full orchestra.. early to mid 90s. Since then I have toured as a musician playing in front of thousands.. and that might still be my favorite concert memory.
Thank you for pausing before you spoke and not talking over the song, that is so rare. It would be a crime to do that to this song. I wish all reactors would follow suit. It's been a pleasure.
One of the all time classics and one that will never get old or boring. I have it on my list to suggest to you for a reaction (or did I suggest it already?). My father bought the vinyl version way back and we played it until it was worn down. I would love to sing this at karaoke night.
"So dreamy" ? It's one of the sadest most gut wrenching songs ever written, damn it all to hell. Every time I hear it I cry and think where is she what is she doing. Listen to the lyrics. "Nights in White Satin never reaching the end" reference to the sheets she bought him as a gift just before she dumped him. "Letters I have written never meaning to send " With 20 versions in the trash he never mails the letter to try and win her back. Why? "Just what the truth is I can't say anymore" "Gazing at others some hand in hand" Seeing others in love just brings back the pain. "Just what I'm going through you can't understand ".
Inna, I have something for you to ponder. Justin, the man singing wrote this when he was 19 years old. It is such a heart-felt song! When I saw them in concert there was no orchestra. But it was one of the best shows I ever went to. The Moody Blues are a band that began in 1964 in Birmingham, England.
Moody's - Progressive Rock before there was Progressive Rock. So many great albums, each one being an experience. They've earned a permanent browser tab with a discography of their songs.
In 1967 I took my first big date to see The Moody Blues at The Fillmore East, Greenwich Village, Manhattan, NYC. Just the five guys in the band and their revolutionary Mellotron keyboard which used audio tape for every keystroke emulating an orchestra. It was a beautiful night. I was 16, she was 17 and walking across Saint Marks Place, the scene was electric. The journey on the B line subway back to Brooklyn was dreamlike, and wonderful.
The Moody Blues, are such a great talent. I say this every day, that every vinyl collector should have a copy of each of their albums. I have them all. I’m so glad vinyl has made a comeback.
Thank you Inna for sharing your beautiful reaction with us. Please consider "FOREVER AUTUMN" featuring Justin Hayward (guitarist & lead vocals) of the Moody Blues. The songwriter for "FOREVER AUTUMN" chose Justin Hayward because he wanted that voice from NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN.
In 1977 composer and music producer Jeff Wayne used Forever Autumn as one of the songs in his musical adaptation of H.G. Wells 'War of the Worlds'. I had this musical as a child on a 33 vinyl (great music by the way if you look it up) years later in in the mid 2000's I had the absolute pleasure to see this childhood memory brought to life with none other than Justin singing that very same song. A memory I will never forget.
@@AndrewinAus- I still have the "War Of The Worlds" LP. Very cool that you saw him sing it live. Gary Barlow of Take That and The X Factor, did a rendition of Forever Autumn that is decent, but nowhere close to Justin Hayward.
Knights in White Satin, one of my favourite songs from my youth, thank you for not pausing it every 10 seconds. While listening to your reaction with my eyes closed, I was transported back almost 60 years, 👍😊🤗 live long and prosper from 🪃🦘🐨🇦🇺
you've just taken a time machine and travelled to a time when the music was all about raw, pure talent!!! You had to BRING IT to every show or you didn't make it!!! enjoy the journey darlin, so much more awaits you on your musical awakening 🙂
Thank you for choosing this. My favourite song from my all-time favourite band. Although I prefer the original album version with the beautiful Late Lament finale, I think Justin puts more emotion into the song here. Your gorgeous ear-to-ear smile as you appreciated this beautiful song was a joy to behold. He wrote this when he was just 19, and was 65 when this was concert was recorded.
A few Moody Blues songs to check out are, "Tuesday Afternoon", "Your Wildest Dreams", "Question", "The Voice", "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" and my favorite, "The Story In Your Eyes".
I played back your opening remarks a few times and I'm hearing you say the word Satan not Satin as in satin sheets. The song is entitled Nights in White Satin.
I have this concert on DVD. I think they were playing in Colorado. This album, Days of Future Past was artwork. Justin wrote this song when he was 22 I think I heard.
One of the great songs in recent musical history. You should listen to more of them. Also, react to Home Free doing "When a man loves a woman", Dimash's "Stranger" and two of the guys from Home Free doing "Two country singers try to sing opera".
That was one of our slow dance when I was young and I must say, this is the first time that I prefer the version of 50 years later than the one of 70' maybe because ther is no more that psychedelic side of the group 😊
Cant even tell you how many times ive seen the moody blues in concert, and got autographs backstage. I used to play their music everyday day from about the age of 15 to 42
Graduated High School in '67. After my time in the service, I started college. I used to listen to this while having Pizza and Beer, with my best friend in the early '70s
I fell in love with this song In Australia when I first heard it while I was in primary school. So many years ago, and I still love this song!! Absolutely beautiful!
O.K. Inna, First things first, I am new to your channel. I have enjoyed this Hall of Fame band as long as you have been alive. Since the 1970's!!!!! They write very powerful and thoughtful music. Justin the man singing wrote this when he was 18 years old. Can you imagine coming up with this is a teenage? I have seen them in concert. GREAT!!!!! Play those air-drums lady...!!!!! Get yourself ready lady, this ending will knock your socks off!!!!! I am SO happy that you liked it. I'll be back!!!! All Moody Blues music is good to great. ALL OF IT.................. Lastly Happy New Year!!!!!!!
Welcome to the world of The Moody Blues. Justin Hayward wrote this song [at the age of 19, on a 12 string guitar], for his then girlfriend, who had bought him a set of white satin sheets. He married her in 1970 and they are still together. The song was released in 1968, as a single from the album "Days Of Future Passed." It was called "The Night" on the album and finished with "Late Lament," prose read by Mike Pinder, the Keyboardist and Melotron operator. Written by Graeme Edge, drummer of the band. I consider the song to be among the best ever written I first heard the Moodies in 1968. I was blown away, as I was by the group Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears. The orchestral sound, the horns. WOW! I did a hitch in the USMC, and had myself together in 1974, upon my discharge. Saw the Moodies first in 1974. Saw them again in 1977 and 1980. All the concerts were, as you noticed, heralded by the audience being silent as they performed. It was magical. Still is. Music such as they made will never grow tired or get old. Neither will it ever be composed to their level again. I am so pleased to have grown in an era which had such marvelous musicians. Thank you for your review.
Same you were not alive back in the late 60's and 70's when music was music. Moody have many songs like this. Tuesday Afternoon. Melancholy Man. Just a man in a rock & roll band.
Thank you so much for being here guys, see you soon on Twitch
One of my favorite 60s bands
I like how you appear to be genuinely excited when you hear good groups (This song, The Righteous Brothers, etc) Keep it up.
Inna, good Lord you make the color green sing!! You look amazing, as always!
want to be a citizen of the USA?
This song was released in 1967 I was 4 years old at that time, 😁 it's a wonderful very romantic song.😉
This is the best rendition of this song that I've ever heard. It's absolutely beautiful. Justin's voice is incredible even years later. I'm 70 and remember this song when they first came out with it.

he's awesome & was good to look at too !

this is the closing track from the moody blues concept album Days of Future Passed which about a day in one man's life the lyrics for the song was inspired by Justin Hayward the singer receiving a set of white satin bed sheets from a girlfriend. the song closes with a spoken poem.
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed sitter people look back and lament
Another days useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is gray and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion
That’s beautiful

She’s been married to him for 54 years so it’s not that sad.
he had just broken up he said when he wrote it & started new relationship , so he did get the better one . he married the year we married !
@@Jeffcatbuckeyethat is not true he never married her.
Its a song about nights of passion under satin sheets, clearly this woman left an impression.
Inna,
I have something for you to ponder.
Thank you for your reaction to this amazing song. The Moodies are the masters of melody and have produced many spectacular albums.
The journey on the B line subway back to Brooklyn was dreamlike, and wonderful.
life in the late 60's was dreamlike...compared with the nightmare of today's world...where's the LOVE?
I have seen them twice in concert from 1968 and 1990. I have all there albums.
The Moody Blues, are such a great talent. I say this every day, that every vinyl collector should have a copy of each of their albums. I have them all. I’m so glad vinyl has made a comeback.
Your face says it all in my top 5 of the greatest ever records made,a true masterpiece.
@@AndrewinAusI am also an Amanda am so very jealous!!
My favorite Love Song of all time from one of my favorite bands of all time.
It was used in the movie Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp.
Great pick Inna. My favorite Moody Blues song.
Oh Inna, you have discovered one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I hope someone sings it to you one day. 😊
I was lucky to have been around when these groups came out in the 60s and 70s. Magic times !
Seen them at Red Rocks numerous times. The second time with orchestra. Beautiful clear night. Lots of acid and a great trip. Wow! Those were the days!
When I was in high school this was our anthem. We were, and some us still are, the Knights, class of 77!
I saw them at The University of Illinois in Champaign, IL in March 1972 with some buddies and the concert changed our lives.
You are exquisite, dear Bisscute. 🫶😘🙏🌹⚡️🇦🇺❤️ This old Aussie bloke just loves watching and listening to your reactions. Cheers 😘🫶💐🤠🌺😝
Grew up with their music and many other great bands. 👍🏼 Thanks for all the memories .
Fell in love with my wife in 1971. We listened to this over and over.
This is so sweet!
Great song for over half a century.
Tuesday Afternoon is another of my fave Moody Blues masterpieces - awesome!
Great reaction to a timeless classic!
Thank you!
I used to play their music everyday day from about the age of 15 to 42
definitely felt the movie vibe, especially at the end. Awesome song. I've loved it for many decades now, man I"m old lol
These Blokes are better with age,.This is an amazing performance. Its always been a favourite of mine.
Graduated High School in '67. After my time in the service, I started college. I used to listen to this while having Pizza and Beer, with my best friend in the early '70s
Saw them live ... it was amazing, I'll never forget the experience.
So lucky!
SUCH a beautiful reaction. Thank you SO much for sharing. This band opened my eyes to SO many vital aspects.
I saw these guys live in 68 and 72
Saw them in late 60's with the Houston Orchestra in Music Hall, small venue. Best concert I have seen...
A true classic, covered in Italian "Ho difeso il mio amore" by the band Nomadi.
Your sincere delight at this incredible song made it even more special.
It was also used in the movie "Casino" from 1995 with Robert de Niro (Blockbuster) and other movies and series.
16 studio albums, hits in the 60's, 70's ad 80's. the Mighty Moody Blues, every song is a musical journey
Brava Inna, come sempre! Vedo che migliora anche il dito😂😂
I fell in love with this song In Australia when I first heard it while I was in primary school. So many years ago, and I still love this song!! Absolutely beautiful!
THIS IS 1 OF the most haunting soul torching beutiful songs ever made ❤❤❤
O.K. Inna,
First things first, I am new to your channel.
I consider the song to be among the best ever written
I first heard the Moodies in 1968.
The lead singers name is Justin Hayward.
If you like this kind of music I would recommend "forever Autumn" it's another romantic song.
All the Moody Blues albums flow together. Rest in Peace Ray Thomas. Play with the Angles now.
