In 1953 I was 15 and saw Piper in the film with Tony Curtis and fell in love with her right away. I was so jealous of Tony Curtis. My sister was into films in those days and Piper Laurie sent me a signed photo of herself which I still cherish. Even at 88 she is still a real beauty. I hope she'll be coming to the UK this year so I can get to meet her. XXX
I'd only seen her in Carrie but I have seen her on TV in recent years. It's great to see her career goes back farther than Carrie. She's just beautiful in these pics. Great Job!
I've read in reference sources that Ms. Laurie, who wanted serious dramatic roles, became dissatisfied and frustrated with the cheesecake parts that Hollywood kept insisting that she play, and therefore she moved to New York and had success on the Broadway stage which made her much happier. Ultimately she was able to get the sort of movie roles which she wanted and which proved to be her splendid forte beginning with "The Hustler" in 1961. Of course she was also terrific as Margaret White in "Carrie" and as Marlee Maitlin's concerned and uncertain mother in "Children of a Lesser God".
Awesome beauty and a talented lady. Conrad Janis is the director/Star opposite her in the movie Bad Blood the Hunger which opens on Oct. 26 through Nov.1 throughout the country from Regal Theaters. She plays the role of Millie and she and Conrad make a chilling duo.
Her grace of movement coupled to her incredible beauty in the "Mississippi Gambler" with Tyrone Power, was Oscar worthy. It was better than Vivian Leigh's performance in "Gone With the Wind" in my honest opinion. Of course, the sheer length of filming "Gone With the Wind" must have been difficult to stay in character through the entire movie, placing a distinct disadvantage for Vivian. I thought Piper showed her emotions better, and her grace of movement has no peers in my opinion, and her timing was impeccable.. Her athleticism must be substantial (perhaps she was somewhat a Tom-boy growing up?) for her confidant handling of the horses, as well as the jump to the ship in the final scene. That jump was 6 feet or more, and she in a full length Antebellum gown. She must have had a very good director, allowing her talent to show through in its completeness while sharing the lead with Tyrone. Bravo to you Piper. Your later work in more standard fare such as "Carrie", and "Twin Peaks" shows your depth, and precise acting ability. Another favorite of mine was "the Purple Mask" with Tony Curtis. I thought your work Tony stands out for a variety of reasons. It shows your depth from drama through comedy. You are an incredible talent. I bid you bravo madam.
