Trying out the Toshiba Canvio Advance 2TB Drive

- I needed a backup drive for my Macbook Pro, but didn't feel the need to grab an SSD as they are still a bit pricey. I found this drive for just $58 on Amazon and bought it.
While still limited as far as speed, this drive was perfect for backing up my entire laptop, which it did in about 30 minutes. So about 800GB of data, so I am pretty happy with this purchase.
This drive comes in 4 different colors as well as 1TB, 2TB & 4TB storage sizes.

#Toshiba #CanvioAdvance #ExternalHDD
I just purchased this product. Data storage drives are popular as files are getting bigger and bigger.
Does it automatically back up the data without connecting the cable?
Didn't know if I should buy it but your video helped me decide. Thanks a lot
Just picked up two of these 2TB Canvio drives for $59.99cad or @$47.00usd which is a great deal !
From which website ?

I have this one for a Mac, how do you re format it 😅 that’s the answer I was searching for and you only talked about it for a few seconds
did you ever get the answer?
nvm i got it lol
@@javar_inqI literally never got it can you show me if you know how to format it
@@ImaniDarian ofc,
Step 1: so basically you plug in you hard drive to the Mac
Step 2: you click the magnifying glass (or click the “command” and “space bar” at the same time) at the top right of your screen and a search bar should pop up
Step 3: You type in “Disk Utility”
Step 4: a display should come up and on the left handed side you it’s a drop that say “External” that should have the name of your hard drive
Step5: you click it and at the top right of the pop up tab you should see “erase” and click it
Step 6: another pop up should come up that lets you change the name and format
(By the way if you have any files in there currently this will erase them and everything off your hard drive)
Step 7: click the format option go to “ExFAT” which allows you to add folders and stuff on both Mac and windows and add to it and all that which is ofc what you want then you click it and click erase
Step 8: it should have had a loading bar on it and afterwards try creating a new folder to see if it work and you should be done
@@ImaniDarian idk if my other messages sent lol but hit command space on your laptop type in “disk utility” your should see your hard drive there click it and at the top right you should see erase then you have to click that and format it to ExFAT so you can use it like a regular storage space on both mac and windows after it loads you should be good Ms Ma’am lol
what is diffirent between tooshiba advance and ready??
I needed to here more about installing and setting up.
My mother has a Toshiba hard drive similar to this, if not this exactly, and it is white.
Nice video ! 👍
BTW do you know what is the difference between the advance version and the basic version ?
I believe read and write speeds are slower on the basic construction of the hard drive is lower plus you don’t get auto updates and password protection on the basic
Hello, could you help me to know what is the difference between the version of the HDD canvio advance vs. canvio slim? Please help me, I'm about to make a decision. Greetings from Peru.
😃👍
Thanks for the review. It helped much
What about reading and writing speed?
Can you format it for Mac right out of the box? Like if I connect it to my MacBook can I format it without issue? Thanks!
Hi, did you explain on another video by any chance how to activate the password protection?
Great video man! Can we use this for storing Normal data like movies and stuff??
Oh yeah you can use it for anything!
@@IansTech what about for gaming?
@@ahmedbilal5554 have a gaming version buy that
Mines wont show up on finder nor on disk utility. Mind you both my nacbook air and hard drive are new
I would like to know what is the difference between the HDD canvio Basic version vs. HDD canvio Ready please. ?
So it appears the exterior is different and the included software for backing up.. but both offer the same storage options and speeds. So unless you really need that software - basic model is fine.
Thank you so much!!!
I bought it but am not familiar with that connector. Can you please show how you connected it to your device? I have nothing matching those fittings.
You need a Micro USB-B cable, it should also come with a short cable.
it's compatible in windows 11 OS?
Could it work on xbox series s to store next-gen games?
Hi, thank you for your good video, I want to buy a hard drive to store all my data for a long time! Between a few models I don't know which to buy like: this model or model ready(for anti shock!) Or ADATA (680or 700. 720) or anti-impact or shock proof! Is this model anti-shock? Doesn't it break quickly (say they'll break down after 1 or 2 years)? Or buy shock-proof models? I'm afraid to choose the wrong model and all my information is lost, toshiba models here are all Made in China, is it the same model or are they fake? I hope I've made my point.
Not sure if it is shock proof but I can attest to the longevity of these as I have a Toshiba hard drive from 2009 that still works well.
I as well have a Toshiba drive pulled from an old laptop i used heavily for years from 2009 and it literally still works.
this gave me a read headache i can’t understand anything and before i could do it on my computer he was 5 steps ahead help
how about the durability ? any one has bad experience with this type ? wanna buy one soon p
It’s been durable for me. Works great still.
Hi do you know what’s the difference between the Toshiba basic vs gaming
Worth to buy ? In Lithuania i see for ~ 64 euros
Not a bad deal, I would keep an eye out - prices for drives fluctuate a lot and you might find a good deal on another brand just as reliable.
So, they don't produce them in Japan, do they
Can I use this for android box nvidia shield?
hey greatly explained, Can u please tell me if will it be compatible with Windows 11?
Yes it's compatible with Windows 11
OK, so I wanna use it on my MAC, I guess I got it right that it's possible but has to be formated in a specific way?
Will I be able to move/save/copy files that are larger than 4gb?
Thanks
Needs to be formatted to exFAT if you want to write to it from a MAC. You can use the built in Disk Utility in the MAC OS to format it to exFAT or any third party partition software like AOMEI Partition Assistant etc...
Does it work on ps5
With Samsung smart tv ? Please
I have the same canvio advance hdd 1TB version , I just want to remove the password from the HDD but there is no such option , do you know any way ? Please let me know. I have also formatted the HDD but it doesn't work.
It looks like you need a program to do that. I found this online maybe it can help: toshiba.semicon-storage.com/content/dam/toshiba-ss-v2/master/en/storage/support/security-advisories/english_users_manual_1.40.pdf
Is the backup a necessity for video editors? Or it isn't that important?
I’d say it’s good to back up in case you revisit something a few months down the road and still need the footage. But it really is up to you and your work flow.
Hi Ian, does this work on a Chromebook?
How good is this hard drive I want to buy it? Functionality? Does the h
HD get hot or..?
It has built in sleep mode after 10 minutes of in activity. No way to disable it if you want it spinning all the time.
Does it automatically back up the data without connecting the cable.
You would need to connect the cable for it to back up, its not wirelessly connected
Was planning to buy this but never used a Toshiba before. Is there a difference between the Basic Vs Advance?
Looks like the only real difference is the Advance includes password software to keep data protected and it includes backup software. Aside from that a different design and color choices on the advance. Everything Else is similar.
Do you recommend this HD by Toshiba over Seagate?
It seems pretty good, can’t speak to seagate. But this one comes with backup software and has good reviews. It’s worked well so far for me.
Both are good, just get whatever is cheapest you can find. I have both Seagate and Toshiba 2.5" external HDD and both perform well and have lasted more than a decade and still running strong.
Will this work to download all my pictures from my pc & wondering if I can download my pic from the cloud into a drive like this ? Or do I need a SSD ?
Thanks in advance
Yeah this will work for this for sure, not as fast as an SSD though.
Good video 😅😅😅d
This disk can't put into a PC?
If it were removed from the enclosure - yes
Actually you can't the drive on these are soldered to the controller card unlike older longer models where the drive is plugged into the controller card. The plus side about this is that the enclosure is an inch shorter.
Can you run a game off this drive?
Yes but the load times might increase
It work whit an xbox one?
As long as it’s formatted for it it should work
It does not work with Windows 11
Works perfectly with Windows 11 Pro 22H2, 23H2 !
Can you transfer files from your phone to this as well including videos and pictures without the need of a computer
I have the same questions!
Can you use this in ps5?
Yes for sure. Just needs to be formatted for the file format for PlayStation
@@IansTech thank you so much for your response
