Great work Euge and a really nice comparison. Like yourself I've got a Marshall JCM800 2203 and it sounds amazing. I put different guitars and pedals in from to get a different sound. The MXR GT-OD is really one of the ones I like. It's matched so well along with a vintage Marshall Governor pedal, bliss.

I watched all your jvm videos and friday I finally got my 410h. I'm getting some killer tones out of it with emgs. It feels like having all the marshalls in one and more. I get it's not the same as an 800 or a jtm but for someone who doesn't wanna have a marshall for each type of sound tjis one does them all! Sparkling cleans, nice breakups, crunchy crunches, compressed crunches, normal overdrives, insane overdrives, dark sounds, bright sounds...not to mention the footswitch...full tone contril6and flexibility but sacrificing very little (imo)

I love the 800. It's great. I currently have an AFD100 that I want to sell, so right now I'm thinking of getting a JVM. The reason for that is that I play different styles and with the JVM I can get a Plexi style tone, an 800-ish tone, a Jubilee-ish tone as well as heavier thrashier tones as well. Since I'm not a professional touring-musician, I prefer to have something that is versatile at this stage..
My favorite amp is just a Superlead Plexi through Greenback speakers, the 2203/2204 circuit coming in at 2nd place.
    Thanks for making these videos!

The 410h has same curcuits as the plexi/800/900/2000 on different channels + a new true clean (green clean channel has no real dist). The only difference is they added a proper Pre Amp Volume control so you can actually pump the MV tube and keep pre amp volume at around 1 for playing at home.
The whole reason they made it was to replicate all the previous big models into one therefor the circuit board is same + proper pre amp volume. (check manual for it)
It's amazing when you know how to tune it in!

  • @tabodee

The JVM can’t quite capture the authentic, aggressive 800 vibe... but then again let’s see the 800 try to come close the JVM’s clean channel. I think you said it best the 800 is a very good one trick pony. The JVM is very good at versatility. Both sound incredible. Whichever is the right tool for you! Thanks for the video-nicely done!

speaking of cab recomendations for the jvm lol....i had a mode four cab that i played mine thru. (jvm410h) it did not have the original speakers though. ...the mode four cab was basically an oversized cab. like the mesa recto oversized. same thing. i had 2 vintage 30 speakers (out of a 1960 vintage) and 2 weber legacy speakers in my cab that i ordered from weber myself. 16 ohm 65 watt 55hz cones 50oz magnets. large H dustcaps. greenback type speakers but i ordered specs to fill out the low end. the fuckin thing was NICE! sounding! its a random suggestion but i've played guitar for decades and having sold that amp a month ago and decided i must have another lol....that set up was just about the best i've ever heard. if you want to shave off a bit of the midrange growl -- maybe substitute g12t75's in place of my vintage 30's. but personally i grew to love the insane raunchiness of rock and roll lol

How was the resonance set on the JVM?
Your 2203 is a beast. One of the best I’ve ever heard. My guess is that most of the magic is happening in the poweramp. You mentioned in another video that the plate voltage is unusually high, which should affect the preamp section as well. Otherwise the 2203 is stock? The amount of gain is unreal. Almost as if the cathode on V2a is bypassed.
Circuit wise, JVM Crunch Orange is looks to be the closest to the 2203 although the schematic isn’t easy to follow. However it is still not the same.

JVM can do everything you want, from pop to country to the darkest and heaviest metal. If you want it to sound more agressive and "in your face" just dial the presence, treble and mid, put away a bit of bass and its a killer machine. Also throw in an EQ and it blows minds. I have one 410, sure the 800 is pure love but for me as a Marshall super fan, the 410h does everything, you just have to dial it a bit and maybe like in the 800 add some pedal, but not many.

Some old 800s have switches in the back for different voltages right? I almost bought an 800 a few years ago from a European country (I’m from US) and they didn’t know if it could work for my outlets right away for me or if I had to take it to a tech .
I’m thinking if it has the switches for different European and US power
Than it can do both by simply moving the switch?

I have never seen one with such switches but a simple voltage transformer will work. I have a few US voltage amps (5150, ADA MP1) and have those transformers (from 230 to 110) and they work great. You just plug the amp’s power cord to the device and the device to the wall.

As an user of both, I would compare the two with jvm's presence and resonance turned off to zero. With these 2 engaged, as the amp designer suggested, the amp is meant to sound very different than the old ones. They are basically 2 extra EQs that exaggerate your tone to sound modern scooped aross all channels, so with them on you cant really get a classic marshall tone even for clean and od no matter how hard you try.

The JVM may have more gain on tap, four channels and every feature under the sun and the moon but your demo makes it quite clear - the JCM 800 is still the king. It is possible that it's tubes too, but if you're using a JJ in the preamp in the JCM 800, I couldn't imagine what could be in the JVM that could make it much squishier so I highly doubt it. Is your JCM800 running 6L6s or 6550s? Cause that would do it...

With 43 years old, i'm was, obviously, influenced by the jcm 800 around the decades and achieve one of them was my first goal . This is the holy graal of metal marshalls BUT, in the end of the day, since i listened the jvm410h i was stucked by his versatility and match with my rock music. After listen thousands of videos, what i ansewerd to my questions was: jcm 800 is more matchbale with music not to much complex in terms of speed, counterpoint and low range than jcm. The clear sound of jvm is more fitness to those qualityes i think.
What i can say is: if ones want heavy sounds, with dark and massive low frequencies, play music like doom metal or death metal without compromisse with very intelegible melodic and harmonic lines, go to jcm 800, but, if your music needs face of polifonic or poliritms with much clarity, goes to jvm.
I don't have the truth, just the one who maches with my musical thoughts...

Of course, it depends on the musical genre you want to get: for a trash / metal you have to use the effect upstream of the preamp on the JCM, on the JVM you use the loop with the effects or just input jack and it can already be enough, then it is true that the majority of musicians generally use pedals or a multi-effect, here nothing is as before and the amplifier becomes no longer basic, but this is another matter, which is obvious from this demonstration.

Is this really fair your comparaison.you have 6550 tubes in the 2203.Come on brother.6550 vs EL34..Put 6550 in the JVM you gonna see the big monster like your 800.I love JVM.A few less of clarity.800 are more treble.
