    What's the best modern Marshall?

      The whole studio line and the 1987x stand out for me, never been a fan of the JVM 410.. too many switches and channels for me personally. But when it comes to versatility, I think it is one of the best amps out there.

      Totally agree with you. I owned one for many years and absolutely loved it.
      But to offer a slightly alternate outcome, I bought a Fractal Axe FX III back in 2019. I was convinced I’d never sell the JVM but after I was able to dial in those same sounds I was loving with the physical amp, I ended up letting it go.

    • @frankwren8215
      @frankwren8215 Год назад +1

      I personally never found the fractal able to get the same warmer tones quite right and even the kemper struggles when trying to emulate the response the JVM has (very organic). Perhaps due to doing different styles; I play a lot of older stuff. I understand the Axe FX is great for really heavy modern stuff (and so is the kemper).

    My JVM410H provides all the Marshall tones I want.
    If it sounds compressed, it just means you don't have enough MV. To get this amp sounding its' best, you need to open up the MV, and dial in the resonance and presence. I run it full stack with 2 Marshall 4x12 cabs.
    It's gonna sound great, but it's gonna be loud.
    My other fav amp is my Engl E651 Artist Edition 100 half stack with 2 Engl 2x12 cabs.

      Something I definitely cannot do at home. So I mostly play clean tones on the amp. And just like you said, drive the MV and the amp comes more alive. I even tried out a Boutique amp that sold for €2k and I was immediately disappointed in the Boutique amp. The JVM is more aimed at the Classic rock/metal market, but still eliminated a single channel boutique amp at what it was made for. IMO it’s just the best amp ever for me.

    Great video and amazing amp. The relay switching for all those circuits is done so well and you really do get a library of Marshall tones in one with all the bells and whistles. I do think it has a slightly tight and compressed character throughout which sounds more modern, vs the DSL which is looser and more raw.
    I personally prefer the rawness of the DSL between the 2. but the JVM has MANY more useful sounds and features and is a more cleverly designed amp. Keen to hear the Satriani one!

    I have had one of these for 9 years, it covers everything from AC/DC to Metallica for me, with easy switching with the 6-button footswitch, its the best amp i have used. the separate controls for each channel eas a big part of why i wanted this, i had been using a DSL40C which frustrated me with its shared eq and to me badly laid out channel switching.

    I had one for 12 years, had some mods too like the Choke and selectable Neg. Feedback. I loved it in every way but I do not gig anymore and have an Axe Fx so it was just gathering dust at home. The MIDI programming is sick, you go from Clean to Lead with almost no delay, tones are great but you do have to spend time with it because you may get similar things with Crunch and OD for example but the details make the difference. Thanks for the review 😊

    Oh and to answer the end of the video... I like the JVM on OD1 red for medium gain Heavy Rock (Gain on 10'oclock) and OD2 for saturated high gain (gain just under 2'oclock) and use a Boss Sd1 with volume at noon, drive off, tone noon. I use a Marshall 1960BX with Greenback G12M's. KILLER! I like the other channel modes for lower gain stuff but I mostly play anything from Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Kiss sorta stuff up to Pantera, Metallica, Sepultura, MegaDeth, Testament stuff. Good video! thanks!

    • @peterharvin2775
      @peterharvin2775 Год назад

      @@LeonTodd 50 watt 2 channel only. Clean/Crunch is shared and only one OD which is the same as OD1 on the 410. You get Crunch when you change to orange or red on the first channel. I kinda like the simplicity to be honest.
      I've read conflicting reports on tone quality on the 205 vs the 410, but I'm completely satisfied. I think best when using humbuckers (that Greco sounded superb). Either amp is a gain monster if you want it. I agree with your comments on OD1 vs OD2, but then I'm biased.

      @@GabeHelma Mike Soldano's last great project was the Hot Rod 25! I have no need for a 50 watt Hot Rod+ or a 100 watt + or an SLO! The Hot Rod 25 easily duplicates the SLO at much lower volumes, and in my home studio it is perfect! The Marshall JVM HJS is the absolute best Marshall amp in my opinion. I have had all the old Super Lead and Plexi amps, but they all require an attenuator to use them in a sane methodology to get that amazing sound! The HJS can produce all of my favorite Marshall sounds in one head! It has taken me 40+ years of playing and experimenting will all brands of guitars and amps to finally understand how to get the sound that my ears and soul wanted, but seemed to never really happen. Now I only play Ibanez hollow body/semi hollow body guitars, and ESP, Charvel, and Jackson solid body guitars with a Floyd Rose tremolo. I use a Boss RV-500, a Boss SD-1, an old Ibanez Tube Screamer, and a Keeley Compressor Plus. How amazingly simple to finally hear the sound that blows my mind and nurtures my soul in ways I have always dreamed of! Also, playing around with the presence and resonance can change the way the amp feels. A little trivia… James Marshall named his amps using the initials of his children. And in this case JVM stands for James, Victoria, Marshall. This is the only amp with his daughter’s initial. JTM stands for James, Terry, Marshall. (His son.) Terry decided to leave the company a while back and that his when his daughter, Victoria, took over.

    The JVM is a solid amp. It gets a bad wrap a bit because it is not a traditional Marshall like a plexi or 800 or even DSL. And it definitely isn't, coming from someone who builds plexi and tweed clones. But, it is a pretty well thought out circuit. There's a few good mods for it even supported by Santiall (the actual designer of the amp on the old JVM forums) that really pushed it over the top. I have one such JVM since like '07 when they mispelled "output" on the back lol. One of the OG's. And then I modded to be less gainy/more vintage feeling. It does a thing no other amp I've ever played can do. I can share these mods if y'all like.

    I used to love my JVM. You really need a decent gate like the ISP decimator in the loop to tame the red channel at high gain. It was actually your vids and channel that convinced me to go digital which I don't regret . I really don't miss lugging around my head and cabinet :-)

    Nice amp. I bought one when they first came out. All the bells and whistles. There were a couple of sounds I really liked but most were unusable to me so I got a Vintage Modern which had also just come out and it's been my go-to. The JVM is a cool amp and especially for those heavy sounds. Great demo as usual.

First in the js you have 4 quality studio gates instead of reverb.. It has a chocke, smoother distortion no hiss.. And the crunch channel is Jcm800 2203.. Also the pedalboard is a great improvement.

    I’ve owned a bunch of Marshall’s over the years.....including DSLs, JCM 900, YJM, Vintage/Modern, JMD:1, and the JVM. I love them all for different reasons, but the Vintage/Modern and JVM are the only 2 I will not part with. The VM has the classic plexi vibe in spades and the JVM is the Swiss Army knife of killer tones that make it the ultimate gigging amp. I pair my 410h with 1960A cab with Vintage 30s and Greenbacks in an ‘X’ pattern and I smile every time I plug into it. It’s perfect. 🤘🤘

    I love my jvm410h and like you mentionned, I prefer the gain level of od1 and od2 lower (around 9pm in my case) and I get quite enough overdrive to keep that lovin’ « chirping » attack. I’ll try swapping some preamp tubes to lower the gain of these and try to get more range. Od1 vs od2 differ to me in the same way as on the EVH 5150 iii between the blue and red…. In both cases I prefer the openess and sponginess of the od1/blue where the od2/red are a little too compressed and tight to mytaste but hey, that’s all preferences right ;). Great vid, thanks for the review!

    Funny this pops up, I'm picking up a Voodoo modded JVM 410H today, that I'm ending up through trades. I don't use the Marshall 9200 power amp much these days that I'm trading, so worth it. I used the 205C for a while, which wasn't a bad amp, just was missing some of the full 410H flavor, as I guess the gain channel was only OD2, so it was very modern. The most interesting features about the stock JVMs though, is they don't have a choke in the circuit, giving them quite a different, and unique feel.

    • @Supergrunged
      @Supergrunged Год назад

      @@LeonTodd some quick research shows that the Joe Satriani model JVM does, in fact, have a choke. So the amp overall may feel a tad different. The original design of the JVM didn't have one, as the designer felt it impacted the feel of the amp. What makes it so much easier to play, and fluid, compared to other Marshalls, where they may feel a bit stiffer, or harder to play, because of the choke.
